Great Blue Heron Nature Reserve in Chilliwack
Description
Privilege
Wonderful park that is well kept and easy to push a stroller around. The trails wrap around various ponds and rivers so you can take a closer look at the critters swimming about. They even have hunter blinds located throughout the park so you can watch the wildlife without startling them. My favourite spot in particular is the little tower that you can climb, it has a gorgeous view!
MoreInteresting to visit. Situated in a really quaint town which is worth a visit in its self.
MoreA jewel in Chilliwack! Every season a surprise. Despite its popularity, it never seems crowded when we go
MoreThere werent many herons in the park (mostly ducks). The paths were easy to follow and well maintained. The tower... really doesnt give you a view of anything. Walking along the river we saw a few herons and walking back we went by many horse farms. Had fun, it was a nice outing.
Morea beautiful place to go for a walk with a loved one.
Since I was a child the Great Blue Heron reserve has been a beautiful area to explore, but the passionate staff and cool exhibits in the interpretive center are really what takes the cake.
MoreBeautiful calm environment. Lots of birds and small wildlife if youre quiet and observant. Trails/paths are well maintained and easy to navigate on foot or bike.
MoreAn awesome place to go for the afternoon or morning when the birds are there. Springtime seems to be the best, as well as mid June and July when you can see all the herons up in the tree.
MoreNote - park is open until dusk. Hours listed are for the interpretive centre.
Very nice and easy walk. Lots to see!
Should have better signage for which trails are open. Other than that It is a beautiful place to visit.
MoreFantastic area for nature walks and seeing all sorts of fauna and flora that you dont get a chance to see much in the city. As the name suggests, herons are abundant as well as many types of ducks, geese and waterfowl, many songbirds, eagles, osprey and other raptors, cormorants, ravens and kingfishers. There are beavers routinely seen at dawn and dusk and sporadically throughout the day. There are occasionally otters as well. Too much to list. Great place for the family and a decent spot to start a bike ride or jog from as the reserve connects directly to the Rotary Trail along the Vedder.
MoreVery nice, casual trails for walking. Especially if you want to give your legs a slight break from all the mountain trails! I just wish I could have been here during the seasons for Salmon or the Herons.
MoreVery biodiverse but lots of bugs and mosquitos.
I love this park although the bugs and mosquitoes are heavy
Lovely nature reserve, nice to see how it is being restored after the flood. Great place for the family. I enjoyed taking pictures of native wildlife and plants. The nature shop/museum has a great variety of local art and nature toys & tee shirts.
MoreA great place for bird watching and going for hikes
Tons of birds to look at ducks etc. Observation towers they can go up in and tons of trails all around a huge pond.
MoreLovely and peaceful. The gift shop has some amazing treasures!
This is a lovely place to come for a walk, jog, or bike ride. I haven’t been inside the facility, but the trail along the Vedder River is beautiful.
MoreWhat a perfect day at the Blue Heron Reserve today. Blue Herons were plentiful. Trails are in great condition.
MoreThis is an awesome place for a nice walk, its stroller friendly, toddler friendly and always nice too see the wild life that is around!
MoreBeautifully maintained park for a naturally occurring wetland. The work that has been done to remediate this park after the 2021 floods is truly impressive. The caretakers of the park are friendly and knowledgable. Many activities and classes are hosted here. Artisanal art and wares are available for purchase and are generally made by local artists.
MoreIts our family tradition to come here. Great leisure walk, many educational opportunities for children, beautiful scenery and tons of birds to watch. Sad they are still close due to construction to repair damage from the recent flood.
MoreWe didnt see the heron. Lots of birds and people fishing 🎣 😁
My family and I visited a park on a rainy day. We had a beautiful walk (despite the rainand we saw the salmon spawning. The salmons were actually jumping out of the water, it was spectacular!
MoreA lovely little walk, great nature reserve.
Amazing!! Loved this little afternoon adventure. Great for a hot day where you want to splash in the river and also walk around in the shade trees, I presume itd also be pretty in not so sunny weather as youre mostly covered anyway. So much wildlife - truly awesome.
MoreA great place for walking and viewing wildlife.
Beautiful easy walk with very few people around so it makes you feel alone in the woods.
MoreGreat packed trail for biking. However it is shared with vehicles which at times can be dusty.
MoreGreat easy walk. Lots of signs pointing out points of interest. Well maintained. Suitable for families and strollers. A few picnic tables.
MoreBeautiful, tranquil place for bird watching or nature walk. So many little paths to enjoy all year round. Theres a bird feeding area with hummingbirds, juncos, chickadees, woodpeckers and more! In December I saw lots and lots of jumping salmon! It was really amazing to see.
MoreGreat place for an easy stroll. Winter so not much wildlife. We will go back..
We always love walking the loop although not very far. Very pretty. Its a good place to pick up the Vedder Trail though. You can definitely do longer routes this way.
MoreThe place is great for long or small hikes. Ample parking space. Great place for dogs walk; biking 🚴♀️ or/and horse riding. The trails are well marked. One could also do fly fishing.
MoreAn idea place for bird watching, hiking and biking. Very quiet and scenic trails.
MoreWas a really nice little walk we went in today. Wish I coulda seen some otters like advertised. Haha. Maybe next time Im in the area and come by, well get to see some.
MoreThis is my favorite spot for walking all year round. At the right time you can catch the Heron and local variety of birds raising their chicks a real treat to see. They have picnic areas and a variety of trails. There are restrooms throughout the park and all of them are very clean. There is also a little shop area that you can pick up souvenirs and chat with the friendly staff. If you have children this is a great place for them to learn a few things and develop an appreciation for wildlife. If there is a draw back its the parking area is not very large.
MoreMy peaceful happy place. Well kept trails, an abundance of wildlife and enough space to enjoy some solitude.
MoreA nature reserve with easy hiking trails, great views, ample bird life and the best is the Blue Herons nesting in the reserve. The information center is welcoming with staff that are always helpful. At the main building they have tables and bird feeders where you can sit and relax and watch the birds feed. All around the river you find benches, and there is also a lookout tower.
MoreGreat Blue Heron Nature ReserveFriendly knowledge volunteer staff. I was told we may not see any Blue Herons because of the time of the year. He was correct. He also explained there has been a reduction of nests over the past year. The shop has several stuffed bird displays to look at along with items for sale. The cost of entry is your donation to the reserve.Nice trails with benches along the way. You can sit and enjoy the surroundings.
MoreWhat a beautiful place to visit. So many trails to walk, bike, alone or with family and friends. Variety of ducks, birds and of course the heron. Perfect time of year to view these amazing birds nesting in the trees. Highly recommend a cisit here. I will bbe back to walk a different trail.
MoreIt used to be a nice place to observe birds, but in the last 3 years I saw less and less.
MoreI didnt see any heron td but Im sure they will be amazing around here when the season is right. Awesome trails and setting, hope to return in the future.
MoreThis place is amazing. Absolutely beautiful. Lots of animals to look at and wonderful Trails everywhere
MoreGreat place to walk around. Very calm and relaxing location. Kids will love the tower.
MoreGreat place to be! There are sorry many birds and other animals to see! And the staff is verry kind!
MoreLove this place! Very well maintained and we see new trails and improvements every year. The trails are well kept, flat and easy to walk for all ages. The educational programs are fantastic and this is a great place to spot and learn about local nature (especially the birds and frogs which are easy to find and fun for kids to spot!)
MoreThis is a lovely historic stop on our 12km circuit along the Chilliwack River. While we walk in November 2016, a nothingness season according to the tourism world, we really appreciate the centre giving us some perspective on the area! This is our first trip to Canada. The official tourist season finished in October, and the ski season starts on 24th November, 4 days before we left the country. Though nothing to the tourists trade, we had a ball of a time watching the wild salmons swimming upstream to spawn and die! What a sight during this time!! Canada is well endowed with wild salmons by the abundance!
