Grand Coulee Dam - Dam in Cloverleaf, United States
The dam was humbling. The LA Presa Mexican Restaurant was magnificent, the food was exceptional and the service was phenomenal.
Wow! Impressive, take the tour, watch the light show!
I came here as a child to watch the colored lights projected on the water flowing from the Dam at night. In 1960 it was a spectacular show. Coming back was bittersweet. It is smaller than I remembered. We appreciated the Visitor Center and the staff was well educated on the history of the Dam. Fun for kids and educational. We missed the new light laser shows but I hear they are very cool. Worth the visit.
One of the biggest public works projects in the history of human kind. Come for the tour and learn about the history.
Beautiful, peaceful and great place for a picnic. The history is amazing! My childrens grandfather is one of many people who worked on the construction of this dam.
The tour is very good with history and inside tour. First, go through a metal detector after 9-11 more security was enforced. Then everyone got inside a van. The host took us through town talking about historical buildings and other history of the town. Once on the Dam, the host told us about how many water Devers pipes went to 690,000 acres went to towns and farms. We went through a gate and walked inside. I think we went to the 9th floor where the turbines were. I took a photo of the green turbines. (Two not in useSoon we got back in the van and drove across the top of the Dam. Half way back across the Dam we stopped and got out. I took photos on each side and a video on top of the Dam. Afterwards, we drove back to the pick up spot. The whole trip was a hour.
It was cool to see such an important piece of history but it was about as exciting as youd expect from a dam I suppose.
Its amazing the think humans built this thing, its huge and impressive. At the same time its a mass of concrete. If youre in the area, take a look. Cant drive across it.
Had a good time on the tour. Will be returning next year for the third power plant tour opens up.
It was a great experience to see the power behind water, The laser light show was awesome, it was so amusing how they put some of the story into action.
Beautiful desert oasis. The town around this dam is beautiful. Trees line the main street through town and everyone keeps their homes and landscaping in tip top shape. The people were friendly and welcoming and the dam is an impressive display of engineering. There are tours and and a nice visitor center. Highly recommend this venture off the beaten path.
Take a tour. Its knowledgeable.
Must see if you’re in the area. This is the largest power station in the USA
Took the tour, very interesting. Its hard to describe how massive this thing is. I cant imagine how difficult it must have been to construct, especially back in the 40s.
They have a tour every hour. Its free
This is the largest hydroelectric powerplant in the US. The scale is awe inspiring. This is a must visit spot.
Excellent visit at the Grand Coulee Dam! Wonderful tour of the Dam! Glad we drove the extra 30 minutes to see the dam.
Took the free tour of the inside of the facility and to the top of the dam. The tour guide, she was friendly, very knowledgeable and funny! Ask for directions at their visitors center (there are no restrooms during the hour long tour; tip: stop and use the ones here). Since this is now a restricted area, leave your pocket knife, guns, food and bags/bagpacks/big purses in your car. No animals/pets allowed. Similar to the security screening at the airport. However, they did allow bottled water.
The Visitors Center is great, but don’t expect much from the dam tour. We spent more time in the pre-tour screening, watching an inaudible video, and in the vans to get to it than we did inside the dam itself. The two tour guides were inexperienced and one seemed bored. About 24 of us loaded into the vans and drove to the dam, packed into one elevator (masks were not enforced anywhere on the tourand saw the pump room. Back into the elevator, and out! They drove us to the top of the dam where we got out and took pictures before they drove us back to our cars. The Visitors Center, meanwhile, was wonderful. Tons of information, friendly and knowledgeable staff, a huge theater with great films about the dam, and lots of interactive displays and photos. I’m glad we took the tour because it’s a piece of history, but do spend lots of time at the Visitors Center.
Amazing!Worth the drive.Visitor center has as much as you want to know, probably more. Views are great, interactive displays are designed for all ages. Definitely make sure to make sometime to be here. Remember to look up times of dam tours ( we missed one, and there was quite a wait until the nextand when the lazer shows are running. Lots to do. Amazing facts about the history of the dam and surrounding areas.
An interesting place with historical importance. We went to the visitors center and viewed the displays and learned a lot about the dam and how it was built.
Great experience! The visitors center was wonderful and my middle school aged kids also enjoyed it and learned something. I highly recommend the geocaching activity. It takes about 30-45 minutes and requires you to drive around town a little, but it is fun and you get a cool medallion when you finish. If you want to go on the guided tour, get there about 30 minutes early.
This is a very nice visitor center. The employees are friendly, there is a 45 minute video that is a must see! Interactive exhibits are throughout the center. Picnic area and a trail are also on-site. The views of the Dam are incredible.
It is totally awesome seeing the size of this dam. It is really hard to comprehend because of its size. The visitor center was very informative an we learned a lot. We went to the light show that they show on the dam and it was really neat. We were in the upper parking lot near the speakers but down below would have been a good option if you bring along a radio to listen to the audio.
I never cease to experience awe when visiting Grand Coulee Dam. The monumental engineering work spanned decades in its broader scope. In the 1930s the main dam was constructed by Kaiser with exacting standards. By the early 40s the first powerhouses were on line. By the 50s a vast irrigation system began supplying water to the parched Columbia Basin thanks to this dam. In the 70s they added the enormous third powerhouse complex. And work always continues to keep it efficient. It, itself, remains a popular tourist attraction. Lake Roosevelt behind it offers untold recreational opportunities. The visitor center houses excellent history on the dam.
First class visitors center and tour. All free of charge. The waterfalls are especially beautiful due to snow melt and rainfall this year.
Huge dam. The water was overflowing the spillover when we visited. The laser show at the night is pretty cool. Lots of picnic tables around the dam.
Magnificent… it’s a very beautiful place.
This engineering feast shows the immense creativity of the human race. Instead of wars we should use our intellect to better everyone welfare in the world. This dam was build even with a great deal of controversy where the local natives lost their tradicional way of fishing salmon and therefore lively good.
Unfortunately, we were detouring from our trip between Chelan and Osoyoos (yes, quite a detour but well worth it!so didn’t have a chance to see the night display on the dam. However, travelling via Mansfield over the high plains was tremendous and seeing the Dam itself from the overlook viewpoint was fantastic. I have, of course, got to mention Lonnie Donegan for introducing me to The Grand Coulee Dam in his UK version of the Woody Guthrie song years ago!
Very interactive educational experience that the whole family will enjoy. Not only do you learn about the dam itself but you learn about Coulee City as well. I stopped at a few different locations in the city and was welcomed with a smile by friendly locals who helped me learn about their extraordinary city! Cant wait to go back again!
Beautiful part of Washington this area definitely has my heart & eastern washington is my birthplace. I love visiting eastern Washington it always has me feeling nostalgic.
Scenically beautiful. Magical and retrospective memories of the layers of ideas transitioning into the tangible. Quaint, quiet and comfortable. Definitely a moringa cup of cafe environment.
Ok experience. Great place to walk about. 5 stars for restrooms. Laser light show more educational than entertaining. It would be great if the show mixed in some patriotic or fun popular music. I would have loved to see the falls lighted up before and after the show when the water gates were opened. Not crowded.
Such a cool place. Not much to do around here but relax and a couple hikes. A few restaurants and a couple bars. Safeway is just up the road. The light show is every night and is a definite must see.
Its a beautiful place whether that be summer, winter, spring or fall. I highly recommend coming here when its Independence Day! They put on quite the show! Officers are all around for protection. And they have like a little fair where you can walk up to stands where people sell gifts, food and drinks. Its a peaceful town and even more peaceful scenery. Check out the pictures!
Grand Coulee is an amazing project and learning about it was delightful. I hope they will reopen the powerhouse tour - would have been even better. Some employees knew a lot about the project and were informative. Others not so much. The laser show at night was the highlight of the visit.
One of the largest Dam in the US. Very peaceful and nice picnic area.
It’s amazing that a small city has the largest hydropower producer in the United States. It would be nice if they would let people go on the bridge! It’s very beautiful though.
Ive been wanting to come here since I read about it in Boys in the Boat. No tours or light show due to Covid but impressive just the same
Must visit place in Coulee City. This dam is the largest power generating plant in the United States. Though when we visited only 2 of the 3 were operational. Also we couldn’t get to see the laser show because we went during COVID. The visitor center too was closed. But still it’s a beautiful drive that shouldn’t be missed.
Beautiful place surrounded by rugged hills. Set in the middle of Lake Roosevelt National Recreation area - the Grand Coulee dam is a sight to behold. The salmon ladders on the side allow for the salmon to swim upstream when it is time for them to spawn.COVID update: the visitor center and all public restrooms are closed in the property. The short drive to the vista point is worth every minute. The pictures here are views from the Steamboat Rock State Park Crown Point.
One of the largest hydroelectric dams in the world. Beautiful scenery, around this quiet little town, well worth visiting. We were lucky enough to be there while water was flowing over the spillway in the daytime.
While somewhat remote, this location is among the most beautiful places in the State of Washington. The mighty Columbia River Gorge is the natural source of amazing rock formations surrounding this massive, monumental power-plant. Incredibly large public works overshadow a quaint mid-century town, beautifully manicured. Enjoy expansive vistas all around the dam and a historical tour guided by the visitor center.
Amazing sight to see! A long dive for most but worth seeing! Make sure to bring your cameras and fishing pole!
Ive visited other dams before, but never anything on this scale. And prior to our visit, I had no idea that this dam held back a lake with over 150 miles of shoreline. The biggest piece of confusion for me was coming to the realization that, at the dam, the Columbia River is flowing northward, which it apparently does in a few places as part of its journey mainly south and west. We didnt take the tour, but the visitors center, the laser show, and multiple viewpoints to take in the dam led to a nice appreciation of how many early 20th century resources went into building this.
Must take the Dam tour. Our guide Ralph was knowledgeable & humourous. Without him we wouldnt have known about the look out area to view the dam. Fantastic view! The visitor centre is interesting as is the laser light show but do miss the show they had 8 yrs ago.
Awesome tour ! Ralph , the tour guide kept us entertained with his funny one liners. Really enjoyed his company and the facts shared about the dam.
Amazing engineering feat from over 100 years ago. Tour guide Josh was fantastic. Worth visiting this marvel of construction!
Had a great dam tour. But it would have been nice to go in one of the powerhouses, the tour only takes you in the pump house on the south side, and on top above the spillway.
