Gori Castle გორის ციხე - Historical place in Tskhinvali, Georgia
Nice view from up the fortress after a small, simple hike. There is not much left to from the fortress. Its basically just a big grass pitch and some walls. Still enjoyed going tho.
Castle ruins with a nice view
Nice spot for photos🇬🇪🇨🇵
Free, path is well maintained, not to difficult to climb. View at the top is very nice. Windy, very windy. Nobody there on a weekday. A good diversion after museum visit. Certainly not worth it by itself.Note dogs everywhere. Well behave but they will follow you, sit with you. Cute if you like dogs, not so fun if you dont.
Steep ascend has been worth it! Lovely view up high in the sky amidst the history
Very antique fortress in Gori, Georgia 🇬🇪
Ok ok place, nice ambiance
Its renewed up until the entrance. Inside the wall is only grass and a dog:I was excpecting some info screens and so on. It has so much potential to develop turisticaly.
A very old fortress and after you climb a lot of stairs you get a panoramic view of the town. Other than that there is nothing to see in the fort.Entrance is free with security guards around
Easy to miss but striking in itss message
Gori Fortress you can’t really miss it as the location is in the center of town on top of a hill. After stopping for a quick bite, we were off to find the entrance. Walking around the bottom of the hill we finally found a pathway that looked like it would take us to the entrance. There is no entrance fee to visit Gori Fortress. You walk up a staircase that leads you up to the gate where you enter. I’ll be honest there is not that much to see. The only visible signs of the fort are the walls, which are impressive. No buildings are within the walls of the Fortress, making it difficult to imagine what it may have looked like in its glory. The views from atop of the hill are truly incredible. You can see out over the city and far into the surrounding countryside.3btraveler
Must visit place if you come on Gori tour. I prefer it even to Stalin house museum. Places like this have interesting energy. Stay hydrated bois
Spectacular from below yet besides the very bored security guards there is nothing to see when on top (well there are view to admire)...
Nice view of city and the plain. But under construction and not developed at all (no lights, no paths and no explanations)
You can see whole town from up there .. the views are incredible, and taking pictures there will be one of a kind!!!
The fortress is nothing special but you can get nice view of the city from there
This fortress is definitely the best place to spend some time in Gori
Really nice view. Not much of the fortress to see. It’s just a short walk up, worth it, if you’re in the area
Nice place to stop by. I hadn’t the chance to hike as it was a quick visit.
A nice viewThe fortress is a walking distance from the Stalin museum, but the hike up there is not an easy one, and the fortress is mostly in ruins, it offers a nice view of Gori from above though, so it is worth the hike.Gori is a lovely city so don’t miss the chance to stroll around.
Poorly managed though perfect historical monument
Only Compound walk of the castle remains for the tourists. Reconstruction work has Started and will be ready within a couple of years.
The citadel was very destroyed, but its lovely to see and has great views to the city.
As Castles go this one looks much better from a distance, up close its in pretty bad shape. But the entrance is free at the moment and the views are great from the top ; of the city and the Caucasus.
Great view! They are currently renovating the place so it was not possible to access every part of the castle. Nonetheless we had a great view up there.
After Tbilisi this place doesnt look like something really special. But its the only one place in Gori city where you can take a nice walk. The entrance is free, but place is under reconstruction, so maybe in future it will change. Anyways, visit this place if you still have some time after Stalin museum, before dinner in Sport Cafe.
Nice but not very special. Hope it will be after the renovation!
Not bad but not worth the travel to it to see it from Tbilisi
The view is nice from here to the city, but the castle itself is Under renovation right now (2019)..
Extensive walls and beautiful views. Nice to walk up around with the wild flowers in summer and for the sunset over the town. However, upon teaching the castle, we were disappointed to find no internal structures and no information or signage. The path up to the castle is unmarked. The 8 mutilated warriors say at the bottom of the castle are a very evocative memorial for the 2008 war.
Gori Fortress is a medieval citadel in Georgia, standing above the city of Gori on a rocky hill. The fortress first appears in the 13th century records but archaeological evidence shows that the area had already been fortified in the last centuries BC. The fortress controlled major strategic and economic routes and accommodated a large garrison. In the 16th century the Ottomans captured it to overawe Tbilisi. In 1598 the Georgians besieged it to no avail; in 1599 they feigned a relaxation of the siege for Lent before launching a surprise attack at night to regain the citadel. The fortress continued to change hands between the Georgians and the Persians in the 17th century. The citadel acquired the present-day form under the Georgian kings Rostom of Kartli in the 1630s and Erekle II in 1774. After the Russian annexation of Georgia in 1801, the fortress was garrisoned by a Russian grenadier battalion, but its importance gradually declined and the fortifications went defunct. The British Encyclopædia Metropolitana reported in 1845:At the foot of a chain of low sandstone hills stands the Town and Fortress of Gori, (perhaps the Gursenna of Strabo, the next place in magnitude and importance to Tiflis. The Castle, an oblong, 200 paces in length, placed sixteen fathoms above the level of the Liakhvi, running at the foot of the hill on which it stands, is now abandoned, a Chapel in its South-Eastern angle being the only part in use.Gori Fortress was significantly damaged by the earthquake in 1920. The best preserved structure is Tskhra-kara ("the Nine-gated"), which looks to the west, and is adjoined by the supplementary walls on the south and east.
Although it looks quite nice from afar, the fortress was left abandoned and its in ruins at the moment. There is a very nice view of the city, though. This makes it worth the short hike up. Too bad that it is left in this state...
One wall around the former castle, under reconstruction. View is fine
Gori Castle is a must see sight of Gori. Sunset here is absolutely incredible!!!
Basic ancient castle. Poorly maintained. Nice views of the city. But nothing special really. Is just a small trek from the city centre.
Nothing much, just remaining walls, but it is under renovation. The landscape is breathtaking!
Although very beautiful from the outside this fortress is in the middle of construction and there isnt much to see at the top, again very windy but the views are pretty good! The best part was the statues at the bottom. Again not much to see at the top!
I love this place
Of course its just the ruins, and they are refurbishing some of it, so theres no access to some parts.Butnthe view from up there is great, specially at sunset. The walls from outside, also stand still, and look great. Its nice quite tour, and its free.
I love this place, right in the centre of the city but even though it is pretty high, if you are driving through the town you could easily miss it. Anyway when you do see it you can follow the path to the top and have some amazing views of the town and surrounding areas. Well worth a visit!!
It is always a mind blowing experience to visit a Castle and realise that a few years ago, people lived, laughed, slept and fought wars we you are standing. Great view of Gori
Wonderful place to visit historic points and enjoy the view.
Gori Fortress are ruines of the fortress, there is nothing special to see except the view over the city.
Great castle and viewpoint, but nothing really interesting
Very few people here. There are not that many spots in Gori so if you come here. Just come to see it.
Had my supper up here on a calm spring evening. Great views to to the area. Also great swimming in the river.
It was good to visit and a good place to look around the view of Gori.
This Historical casttle in the centre of Gori. Beautiful views around the city of Gori.. There are many charmed tourists here.
Excellent walls and view from the top. Well worth the walk up there and there is no entry fee. There were two security guards sitting snugly in a humpy on top but we saw nobody else. Must have been an important job!Whatever you do dont make the mistake we did and think you can walk down through the ruins on the NW end and get out the end, even though there is a well beaten track. Bad move - we had to clamber all the way back up to the top after reaching an impenetrable wall at the bottom!! Grr. Nice walls and views all the same.
Beautiful view from the top of the hill. The castle itself is just the wall and rests of the towers, no buildings. But view is worth climbing!!!
