Gombu Rock in Ilam

Named after Gombu Sherpa, who was the first to climb Mount Everest along with Tenzing Norgay, this place is named after him as a tributary. Here HMI arranged training campaign. This is a famous tourist spot where people visit at a regular basis.

Part of the famous duo of Tenzing and Gombu Rocks, this rock is the shorter of the two and is named after Gombu, nephew of Tenzing and also the first man to conquer Everest twice. Situated on the Lebang Cart Road, this rock is fairly visible from the road itself, and is regularly used by HMI students for rock climbing trainings. Relatively easier to climb when compared to the much taller and much more difficult and steep Tenzing Rock, aspiring climbers and tourists can climb by paying a minimal fee. For the less adventurous, there are road side stalls selling a multitude of Darjeeling delicacies which they can enjoy while admiring the rock!

It is situated on Lebong Cart Road and opposite of Tenzing Rock. Great place.

You will have the experience to climb mountain.. But if its raining you will be disappointed..

A total waste of time. Its just a rock nothing beautiful. Surrounding is very dirty. If you are from south india you will find it a waste as there are many such rocks everywhere.Calling it a tourist spot is waste

Mount Gombu best for climbing

When I was in class five I heard about Gombu Rock has got its name after Nawang Gombu. He was Tenzings nephew and he had climbed the Everest twice and became the first person to do so. He climbed Everest first in the year 1963 and then in the year 1965. So i decided to go once feeling the experience.... Hmmm

Gombu Rock is the opposite of the famous Tenzing Rock..there is a small temple opposite of Gombu Rock. its Only used for rock climbing ..good place to visit and Great for non professional climbers..

Sheer steep cliff. Trainers are there with harness & ropes but dont know how would normal tourists climb it. Its for professional climbers.

Good rocking experience..specially for kids

Gombu Rock is opposite the more famous Tenzing Rock unlike which this place is much clearer and less stinker. There also a small temple next to it. Tenzing and Gombu Rock are situated on Lebong Cart Road Darjeeling.

Opposite to this is the Gombu Rock named after Nawang Gombu, nephew of Tenzing who was the first person to climb the Everest twice, once in 1963 and then in 65. He took over as the Director of Field Training at Himalayan Mountaineering Institute after Tenzing retired in 1976. Both these rocks are used for rock climbing training by HMI.

Both these rocks are used for rock climbing training by HMI.Gombu rock is mainly used for training females..It is also quite steep and rises above from the road level. However it does not look that menacing as the Tenzing rock.

Its opposite to the famous Tenzing Rock. It looked a bit steeper and challenging. Was a bit disappointed that there was no activity on this one. Wouldve loved to climb it.

A less popular climbing rock, but, definitely more challenging than Tenzing. It is just opposite to Tenzing Rock on Lebong Cart Road.

Gombu Rock which is opposite to Tenzing Rock is another huge rock having a steep elevation and is used by HMI for advance mountain climbing training. A small temple is built beside it.

This Gombu Rock is another rock used for training by HMI. It is used for advanced training than Tenzing rock which is situated about 100 meters from here.
