Gogol' in Saint Petersburg

Great place with very tasty food for a foreigner. They use that Gogol style from the 19th century that even a menu is written kinda in an old Russian. Delicious food with great service. Can’t wait to get back there!

Very good food in a beautifull ambiance

Gogol is one of my family’s favourite restaurants. In the 2 years we have lived here we have not found more gourmet Russian food. They have the BEST beef stroganoff and a wide variety of Russian dishes, this is a must go for tourists who want to experience authentic Russian food. I recommend Kvass to drink (which is less alcoholic than beer).

Can I give this restaurant a 6 out of 5?The food tastes amazing - special highlights for the beef stroganoff (I want to have it again!!!), the duck breast (very tender, crispy on the outside, and flavorful with a fruity sauce), the Saint Petersburg ice cream assortment and the chocolate sponge cake with raspberry sorbet.If I had to choose one I would definitely recommend the beef stroganoff with no hesitation :))!!!The waitress was so friendly and energetic and speaks fluent English. On a side note, I was impressed on how she memorized all the menu we ordered and even who ordered what - without even a note!Love the ambiance of the place as well, with a decor (including a bell for when you want to order smthand background music that makes you feel like youre in the 19th century.I want to visit here again :)

Bit of old style home restaurant with small piano in the right side dinning area, if you dont like music still you have another areas for the dinning. Very traditional Russian meals and freshly cooked. Excellent soups and nice starters. As usual Russian special level is very low. Price for Europeans isnt not expensive but really worth it.Service guys are very friendly people. Very rare for english menu card in st.petersburg but here you have . Special chicken dish and fish dish . You must try ....

Somebody described this place as a hidden gem, and I agree. It’s a wonderful old-timey restaurant with a distinct pre-revolution era atmosphere. The waiters wear costumes and are extremely nice and welcoming. The food is fantastic, with a good selection of both Russian and European dishes. In the evening you can hear live piano renditions of rock ballads and other songs. Honestly, it’s the best Saint Petersburg restaurant I’ve visited so far. Shootout to the amazing hostess that was beyond nice!

This place was a hidden gem! We found it by accident walking on the street and decided to try it. It was a great surprise. The place is very cozy and the ambiance is too. The food was excellent and very authentic high quality rusian cuisine. The presentation of everything was amazing. And all of the great service and high quality food at a reasonable price. I highly recommend this place

Simply 10/10 for food and atmosphere

Food was delicious as I cant deny that but the service was poor. I did want to try this restaurant for long time and I found that I need to wait for a soup longer time 😅. Generally the place is good if they work on their timing skills.

Fantastic place to eat and the design is absolutely gorgeous. I recommend everybody to come and visit this amazing and beautiful place and enjoy it with a nice dinner and a glass of red wine.

Dumplings were great and food was probably best we had over the weekend.Would say Frozen Lard 3 ways was low point but I intentionally ordered the craziest thing on menu fair enough

If you want to get great experience... you really should visit this restaurant. Amazing atmosphere, great music (if you come in the evening you get a chance to listen to a piano player), waiters and waitresses are very proper, food is incredible. You will feel yourself in the 19th centure. And thats exactly what you need while you are in Saint P.

Overrated restaurant. The food is quite good here, it’s too expensive for the small dishes we got but at least the quality was good. They never asked to what degree we want our steak to be cooked. Our waitress was nice and the staff spoke English well. Service is not INCLUDED in the price for some reason.

Lovely little historical restaurant. The traditional cousin is beautifully accompanied by the historically dressed staff. To order you ring a golden bell. Classical music plays quietly in the background. An absolute gem.

Lovely Russian food and an overall great evening. The waiter was so friendly, really took time to explain the menu and spoke great English. I would definitely recommend the chicken kiev - its the best Ive had.

Its a must! A certain stop for me on all my travels to st Petersburg. Amazing ambiance with the decor and classical music, adorable staff and great menu. Id recommend it to anyone visiting this gorgeous city. I had lunch there twice this week and the staff is always great but Lisa was the best! She provided me with tips on what to try this time, history of the place and the food, lovely smiles, all to make a complete and very memorable experience :)

Great restaurant! Classic style (there is a belt at the tablebut affordable and not stuffy! The staff is very friendly and speak very good english! The food is all superb! Highlights are: chicken Kiev, beef stroganoff and pelvini (dumplings). Also, kid friendly!

We came go Gogol as a second choice but were not the least bit disappointed. The decor is classy, relaxing, with classical music playing in the background. The service was excellent and the food great. I had a delicious borsch soup and a strawberry soup with rasp sorbet for dessert. Everyone loved their food. We had a very good bordeaux wine. And a Beluga vodka to finish off. Warmly recommended.

Honestly, I was afraid this place would end up being a tourist trap because its next to Nevsky. But my American friends and I were blown away! The best Russian cuisine they tried (the best I tried is my Gmas 😀😀The atmosphere is very authentic. The service is great! English-speaking staff 👌P.s. loved ringing the bell to place the order.

Great russian cuisine, the fancy way: great service, price is higher than average but worthy of the quality and flavors. Average bill for two, with salad, appetizer, entree, beer, mors, desert and tea service was 3.700 RUB (58 USD). You would pay the same amount in Bogota Colombia for an equivalent experience!!

Unique atmosphere in a 18th/19th century style restaurant - it really feels like you could be eating alongside Pushkin, Dostoyevsky or Gogol himself.The food was very good. Main courses were excellent though perhaps a touch small. The desserts were good but not quite to the high standard of the mains.It is a bit more expensive than similar restaurants in SPB, but I think it is worth it for the highly memorable experience.

Got in and never made it past the reception. Even though I could see free tables through the windows, the staff just said they would be at capacity for the whole night (until 11PM - I arrived at 6PM).I was touristy-looking, jeans, backpack, but thats it. Didnt even wear snickers. Hated it and, the experience might be wonderfull, but I will strongly discourage anyone from ever setting foot in this place.

This was a great experience in all aspects. The service was impeccable and the food was delicious and really diverse. The atmosphere adds to the experience, with live piano music. Highly recommend it for a nice dinner in central Sankt Petersburg. Make sure however to book in advance!

Dont have a single negative thing to say about this place. The menu is extensive, from starters to desserts, very hard to decide what dish to order as everything sounds so wonderful. The dishes we did try (cabbage salad, borscht, pelmeni, ice cream and creme brulee for dessertdid not disappoint. Big portions, delicious food, as someone has said before, its like your russian grandma was cooking.Extremely great service.Highly recommend visiting this restaurant!

Top destination, warmly reccommedable. Old style russian restaurant, old style flair and atmosphere subtly rounded by piano player with wide repertoire. Situated in historic Malaya Morskaya street where Tchaikovsky, Pushkin and the likes lived and frequented local taverns, restaurant successfully recreates the atmosphere of pre-soviet times when such places were like big appartments, with different tables, sofas, family photos and small oil-painted portraits, pianino in the corner, consisting of several rooms of various sizes, even one small compartment, séparé, in which you have your own privacy. Food is subtly prepared, menu relatively small but exquisite. The only place where I dared to order votka (I am not a drinker of strong alcoholic beverages), and it was excellent, would like to have more but decided better not. Choosed wild mushroom soup and fish dumplings, similar to vareniki made of fish. My companions choosed steaks, various noodles, raspberries sorbet for dessert, everything was flawless. Excellent service, too.

We had a lovely dinner at Gogol. Perfect for a bigger group of friends to get the experience of a proper Russian meal. Whilst sipping vodka and eating pickles between the courses, which was very tasty and affordable, we got to enjoy some live piano music. The best dinner of our trip.

Excellent place for a dinner, with great ambience, decore and service. The decore is very old fashioned and as someone else commented grandmas house. We really liked the salads. Price is above average for local food, but cheap compared to rest of Europe. Book in advance to avoid dissapointment as the venue is smallish.

Location - greatInterior - very cosy, very warm and welcoming.Food - having eaten in other places in St. Pete, this is average, nothing special.Service - terrible!!!! The waitress was friendly and we should have known from that, too friendly is too good to be true. They have a long list of wines, we wanted something dry to go with the chicken and fish we were ordering. The waitress recommended a Gewurztraminer, one of my friends noted that its actually sweet and it wouldnt go with the dishes but she insisted its dry and it will go well with chicken and fish. so we went ahead and ordered a Gewurztraminer and guess what, of course its sweet. Even on the bottle it said semi sweet!! We told the waitress we wanted to change to dry wine, she hesitantly wanted to say no but when we insisted, she went ahead and came back with her manager, who insisted the same thing...."there is nothing wrong with the wine, its dry"!!. I guess they cant read..... or they need to invest money in hiring a sommelier. Anyway, we ordered another Sauv. Blanc bottle and took the Gewurztraminer bottle home.Moral of the story ....dont trust a waitress, no matter how friendly and smiley she is. Or even better, trust your own gut, if you know the wine is sweet, stick to that, dont trust a waitress who pretends to know about wine but knows nothing of that sort 🤔🤣😐

Were fortunate enough to get a table without reservation. Designed in the style of old, Russian living rooms, you can order excellent Russian food. Very friendly and English-speaking stuff. Not suitable if you are looking for some cheap restaurant.

Fabulous food - very well presented. My only complaint is that the portions could be just that bit bigger. But the food is excellent. Also I have tasted the best vodka drink ever here (and I have tasted so many in be past with Russians and Ukrainians)

We wanted to come here to have our anniversary dinner... Hotel staff said that it wasnt a good restaurant and diverted us to the other "classic russian" restaurant in town (Severianin). Well... We came here for lunch and found that this is a much better place and actually it was really really good, starting from the interiors, to the service and the food. A bit pricey, but surely a great place to be.

An absolutely wonderful atmosphere and setting. The menu design is fantastic, it appears as an old book. The food is delicious although holding to true French style, the portion size is slightly lacking. A great place if youre looking for a pleasant sit-down experience
