Glenveagh Castle - Castle in Omagh, United Kingdom
If youre in the neighbourhood, I can recommend visiting this one. It has beautiful surroundings, a really pretty garden, and theres ample opportunities for a great walk about. Its a bit out of the way but very worth it.
This was an amazing place to visit! It had so many trails to explore. We did get to tour the castle & it was very nice! Loved it
Very atmospheric park. Beautiful views, especially when its foggy. An electric bus runs from the beginning of the park to the castle
Lovely walking and well maintained gardens. Great views along the Lough.
I recommend the bus, as it is a fair distance from the visitor centre. Gardens are beautiful. A nice wee cafe with good food.
Beautiful walk to the castle from the visitor centre, 3km but worth it if you can walk. Castle was closed but gardens open and they are pretty. Nice cafe too.
Castle was closed but worth visiting for gardens alone. Short hike up to the viewpoint which completes loop of the area.Shuttle bus only €3 return and operates better than Swiss trains, otherwise free except for guided tours.
Such a charming place! We love coming here for a walk and cuppa. ☕👫
A lovely location. Great cafe. Interesting gardens and history. Personally, the castle didnt do it for me, too Disney. It is what it is, a gentlemans residence with crenulated excretions.Go for the location. If you want to walk from the entrance to the house, it is very pleasant. Sadly, we didnt have time to explore more, and walking in motorcycling clothes is a sweaty sort of a thing.
This castle is not open in the inside to public since Covid. When is open which they told me probably it will be October 2022 it will cost 7€ the entrance. The bus to get there is 2€ per person and is a 4km ride. They run all the time & is a one way road so it can be scary to run in it since in the curves they don’t see each other. It happened to us & the drivers stopped just on time but we were all scared for one second. You can also go walking in a 4km trail where you can take bicycles & park them at the castle (outside near the cafeteria)The gardens & the lake are amazingly beautiful & well worth the drive & visit. The parking to the castle is free & there is a lot of parking and people flowing in & out so even if it says the parking is full Is not really full.In the cafeteria they sell food & snacks. There is a gift shop as well.We drove 5h round trip to get here & stop at a gas station to get food
Our tour stopped here. This was a very nice stop. The castle is both accessible as the contents have to be inventoried and accommodation made for visitors. However there is a nice restaurant and gift shop, some gorgeous gardens and lots of pretty sites and walking trails. I particularly enjoyed the strenuous walk up the steep hill to the beautiful viewing point.
Lovely place. Says 4km from carpark more like 6km. There is a bus that takes you there and back, but if you have a bog enjoy the walk because they wont let them on the bus.
Loved our visit here , beautiful gardens lot of different walks and cafe also well worth a visit
Great and cheap place to visit in the middle of the National Park. Great visit above the castle (accessible via a short but steep footpath). Visitor center could use some refurbishment, but Ill take that over having to pay 20€.
Beautiful 😍 Unfortunately was not able to visit the inside of the castle. But still worth it.
We really enjoyed the lake walk trail to access the castle. The castle is currently closed for tours but we could easily spend a whole day walking around the gardens.
Glenveagh castle is nestled in the national park, it is surrounded by the most amazing landscape of mountains and loughs. The castle and the grounds are superb. We spent two days walking and exploring the castle and gardens and could easily spend longer there.Wed certainly go back again.
Enjoyed visit with extended family members, walking along Lakeside to Castle gardens and grounds in glorious sunshine - the Castle is closed to visitors except having a reception hall open in which to soak up some of its atmosphere; we had lunch after seeing the extensive tropical plants in the conservatory and walled vegetable gardens - lovely clean + bright converted outhouses in which to eat a selection of displayed foods, all served up by v.friendly and helpful staff. Worth visiting when events organised by Castle + gardens staff. Enjoyed by All! Transport available regularly to,+ from visitors car park to Castle.
You’ll need the entire day to visit this place. You can rent bikes, walk or take a bus. Keep in mind it’s a 4 km walk from the visitor center to see an actual castle, beautiful walk mind you… or you can take a bus. Highly recommend!
One of the most amazing places in Ireland nevermind Donegal. Absolutely breath taking views
This is such a beautiful experience, the views are amazing. Staff are so friendly
Unfortunately the internal was closed when visiting June22Had a great walk around the wonderful gardens regardless and even braved the steady and steep climb up to the lookout hill behind.Would of walked or cycled in from carpark but the convenient bus that comes every 15min or so was easier with kids.Would love to come back and look around inside or day.
Absolutely perfect nation park. Great for walking or using bust to get to Castle. Lots of nature and walking trail... really recommend for everyone. Bikes hire available as well for reasonable price. Very very good
Before you go - check out if the castle is open... It is open limited time a year.
What an amazing place to hike, cycle and enjoy the sun. There are various trails of different distances and you can alternatively take a shuttle bus to move between spots. It costs only 3€ per person. The national park is huge and has some spectacular views.
Fabulous Castle and grounds, gardens. Lots to photograph. Hills can present a problem for disabled persons friendly staff and facilities.
Spectacular, absolutely beautiful highly recommend this park to everybody.
Fantastic spot, for scenic walks & cycle with the kids. Beautiful gardens & tour of the castle. Definitely a must visit 👍
Even though the castle was closed when we visited, we still had a wonderful time walking to the castle along the lough, and strolling through the gardens and visiting the tearooms for a pot of tea. Great baked goods available too
If you have enough time to go hiking the full trail, about 3 hours, its amazing. 🌍Special note for the coffee bar restaurant where the food is very good, not expensive at all, and they also have oat and almond milks for the Latte ! 💪Many thanks for that ! 🙏🙌
Absolutely loved it here... my husband and I went to Letterkenny for the weekend and went out to explore the surrounding areas. Lovely walk to the castle and back... the views were nothing but outstanding... definitely worked up a thirst for some alcoholic beverages that evening... a must see if in the area.
Amazing place to visit. Fabulous walks around the grounds and in the walled gardens. Bus service too and from the castle. Fabulous cafe in the castle. Very friendly staff. Arrive early because you will need a few hours to see the entire place. Castle tour is a must.
Wonderful walk to the castle, beautiful garden around it and a great view on the lake
Great place for a sunday walk. Views from the carpark walk up to the castle are lovely. Gorgeous gardens and little coffee shop for a cup of tea. We took the bus back to the carpark and the driver Patrick shared some wonderful history of the national park and Castle.
Beautiful castle in the most amazing setting! Fantastic facilities from rental bikes to bus shuttles, really wonderful place!
Excellent castle, located at Glenveagh National park, you need to walk /cycling/take a bus to see the castle,no car allowed. lovely walk around it.Castle was closed during covid, but worth a trip.Bus service run every 30 minutes. If you get tired after the walk to the castle you can just get a bus back only 1.50 euro one way.
Id been to Glenveagh 30yrs ago and always wanted to go back. Its a great place for a walk and the castle at the end of the lake is fabulous. If you dont want to do the 2km walk theres a bus from carpark to castle and return is €3. Castle isnt open right now for covid, but its still a must see if in Donegal. My phone went dead 😢 so these are all the pics I have to share. But theres mountains, lakes, gardens, and a beautiful castle. 🥰
Oh! A beautiful place with beautiful gardens and lots of places to walk around. Inside there is a small dining area where you can have food. You can walk, cycle or take the bus to the castle. Bus costs 1.50 each way.
Small but nice castle, which you have to reach by 4km distance with an amazing views. 3 ways to do that - walk, bus or bikes (bikes needs to be pre-booked online or by phone). The only bad thing is - thousands of small flies, that bites you on every step, so make sure you have a spray on smth with you.
Lovely place to visit, great gardens, castle etc. The perfect place to bring your family and family doggy to the parks....However.... They allow dogs in the park but unfortunately they do not allow dogs on the transport bus that you need to take to get to the castle and gardens (you cant take your own car in). Very disappointing and short sighted of them not to allow family dogs to come on the bus when its the only way to get there without walking many miles there and back.Come on Glenveagh castle management, catch up with the times and what your customers want. For most families, their dogs are an integral and important member of the family, they are not all working farm dogs anymore.
Lovely 4 kms walk or bus ride to the castle and you can walk as far as your body will take you after that. A few short walks through beautiful gardens and a cafe/ tea rooms with facilities after.
Its a 4 kilometres walk to castle from car park or 10 euro for bus for 2 adults and 2 kids ,due to covid Castle was closed so you could only view from outside , we got coffee and a sandwich but had to stand outside to eat it , whilst at the same time been eaten alive ourselves by millions of midgets 🪰, it was raining to which didnt help , probably best to go on a sunny day 😀, its a beautiful place all the same.
Beautiful gardens at the castle after a 4 km walk or you can take bicycle or bus for small fee.
Ive been visiting glenveagh since I was a child (Im now 47). LOVE everything about it, so will always visit when in Donegal. I never tire of the natural beauty and the history of the place and castle.
Magical place located in the middle of Glenveagh National Park. Café on the site will make sure youll recharge your batteries for further journeys into the Park. Castle itself is stunning and its surrounded by magnificent gardens. If youre in this part of Ireland include it in your plans. And if youre just looking for a great place to visit - put it on top of your bucket list - you wont regret that!
Fantastic views and scenery from the castle and within the castle grounds. Inside the castle was not open due to Covid-19, which was disappointing. Perhaps some more infographics on the site, explaining the history of the castle etc would be useful and beneficial. There is a small cafe on the castle grounds as well which is really handy, serving a range of foods, including coffee and ice cream etc. All in all a great experience for families, couples and groups of friends etc.
A Fabulous place to visit. A gentle 45 minutes walk parallel to the water takes you from the car park to the castle and its gardens. Castle was closed when we visited due to covid but the grounds were open. The tea shop has great food so eat there rather than bring your own
Beautiful scenery, but be prepared to walk good distances. We walked 9.5 miles there and back to the waterfall. Lovely gardens, coffee shop, toilets at the Castle. A great hike and I would do it again
We were greeted by many friendly staff members in the visitor centre and the castle itself. We thought the tour was a little short but interesting nonetheless! Unfortunately we arrived at the beginning of a storm so due to snow and rain we couldn’t explore the gardens and surrounding woodlands to the degree we wanted. We saw pictures though and it must be a great place in good weather! The café had a good selection of cakes and buns and allowed us to shelter from the worst rain.
Wonderful place to spend the day just to laze around or go for a walk or you can even hire bikes. The walled garden is so beautiful with a courtyard restaurant. You can have a guided tour around the castle. The views are breathtaking. The car park and the grounds are free. There is a bus that can take you up to the castle for a small fee.
