Glacier Lagoon in Hofn

One of a kind. Gives you the Arctic vibes. Huge pieces of iceberg floating on a stream and flowing into the sea. The diamond beach on the other side of the road is the follow through of this place and surely is a place to behold. The place was way too crowded.

Must visit!!! Breathtaking and once in a lifetime kind of place. I just wanted to get a tent and live here.There is plenty of parking available right next to the lagoon and there are toilets too. I recommend to take a stroll at the parking level area and then you can walk down to get more close up pictures. Then make sure to walk up the little hill next to the parking lot and from there you can get a good view of the entire lagoon from various sides.I see lot of travellers with DSLR but I took pictures from my mobile phone camera and they came out equally stunning. Take your time to explore the scenery, its so calming to see the little icebergs floating in the lagoon.

DO NOT MISS THIS SPOT. So stunning - we came upon it quite by accident, but it ended up being one of our favourite memories from our trip. Absolutely breathtaking.

An amazing natural wonder that I’ve never seen anywhere else. It’s humbling to watch a glacier melt away before your very eyes. This glacier lagoon is well worth the visit because it will be an opportunity to see a glacier that our grandchildren may never be able to see.

During the peak timing, car park is full even though plenty of lots and many had to park at another parking lots across the road. The view is pretty stunning and incredible. Floating iceberg so close to the shore and so many of them displayed color of blue. Quite an unforgettable scenery

10/10 for their zodiac boat tour! book your tickets in advance or you’ll be begging the ticket desk for a slot. Guide is equally knowledgeable and fun!

absolutely stunning! words cant describe how beautiful these glaciers are. sadly theyre melting away really fast. We took the Icelagoon boat ride with 6 other tourists. Tour was amazing as we got to see the glaciers very close. parking can be tough to find during peak afternoon hours. The diamond beach is not far away. Theres also Fjallsarlon glacier about half a mile down this lagoon which is just as beautiful. mesmerized by the size of these glaciers.

Jökulsárlón is one of Icelands natural gems, and weve even started calling the nearby black beach Diamond Beach, as the chunks of ice that lie on it resemble diamonds sparkling in the sun.Thousands of people are drawn to Jökulsárlón throughout the year to watch the free-flowing icebergs, explore the lagoon on boat trips, and even frequently photograph one of the seals that inhabit its waters.An incredible amount of photography captures the stunning beauty of the lagoon, and it has even become one of the most popular filming locations in Iceland.

Just when we didnt think it could get any better, southeast Iceland delivers Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon.The icebergs in Jökulsárlón are composed of ice that is over 1,000 years old and first started forming in 1934, when Breiðamerkurjökull glacier started retreating, leaving the lagoon in its path. The lagoon has increased fourfold in size since the early 1970s. The lagoon flows through a short waterway into the Atlantic Ocean, leaving chunks of ice on a black sand beach. While we witnessed four seals bobbing in the water from a distance, the fish-filled lagoon hosts hundreds of them in winter. Heavenly. 💙

Absolutely do not miss this spot! It was without a doubt my favorite experience in Iceland. We visited around midnight in early July, and it was completely empty. We witnessed the most beautiful sunset during our visit. Unless you’re looking to do a boat tour, I’d highly suggest coming to visit after all the crowds have left (or before they’ve arrived).

What a beautiful place. A true must-see when visiting Iceland. We also had the luck to see a few seals. It can get very busy so it´s best to go very early (or very late, we´ve heard). They organize boat tours but we had the feeling this is not really worth it, the view is as amazing from the side and you can walk all the way around, there are even a few car stops on the side if you don´t have time to walk all the way around. Kayaking did look cool to us, since you can get reallt close to the icebergs. It´s easy to combine with diamond beach as well. Loved it!

Gorgeous must see place! Parking lot is big but can fill up fast during peak times. Entrance is free and a nice place to walk around and view the glaciers. Very surreal. I did excursions like the zodiac boat and kayaking but if I were not doing the excursions, I wouldve spent 2 hours here.

Should really dock it one star on account of the hordes of people that are inevitably there but they are there for good reason: it is stunningly beautiful. It also requires no effort to see it so the buses and selfie-hunters descend. Ponder why it exists...right: climate change. Sobering as well as a visual marvel. See it whilst you can.

Breathtaking place to visit once in a lifetime. The Glacier itself will be melted away in a few decades maybe quicker. The Lagoon is wonderful no matter how weather is and one may witness a true wonder of nature.

Beautiful lake - can see many great icebergs and we even spotted over 10 harbor seals!

This was for me personally the best experience so far. Yes, the waterfalls are amazing as well, but this was better :). On one wide we have the lake with huge floating ice bergs and on other side the Diamond black sand beach with smaller pieces. Both sides are must to visit! Enjoy it at least as I did.

I mean, how can you go wrong with these little icebergs and the glacier! It was so neat to see them up close, but the best part was all of the seals! There must have been at least 50 of them swimming and fishing around the icebergs. Also, theres a webcam at the bridge, so my mom in Canada was able to get a video of us, which I thought was pretty cool!

Lot of seals and peaceful place, just go away from bus and people.We have been there hours to see seals, icebergs and the glacier behind.

Really beautiful and worth stopping; you have 2 alternative stops before bridge (off you go from west sidewhich has less people and you can see seals 🦭 if you lucky:)

Fantastic place, so beautiful ice formations with various colours. Highly recommend to visit. Nice coffe bar close for a relaxing coffe. Take a wind protection jacket, ice wind is blowing strong.

Spectacular place to go if you visit in June when the glaciers have just started to melt. During other summer months its still impressive, but not as populated with icebergs

If you go to Iceland this place is a must. The light reflecting off the glaciers is breathtaking. Pictures do not do it justice.

Wow! A must see while in Iceland. Short hike from the parking lot. Not too crowded. Options to walk down and take pictures close up; of course, don’t get in the water.

Glacier Lagoon is a magnificent site - glacial lake with captive icebergs. Truly a sight to behold. You can hike all around the lagoon and get some awesome views of the nearby glacier as well as the icebergs. Bonus - sea lions, ducks, ...

Jokulsarlon I found is an amazing place to spot wild seal, eider ducks, and some beautiful ice structures floating amongst the lagoon. I brought a 400mm lens and was able to capture some awesome images!

A highlight of Iceland. The seals swimming around the icebergs, the chunks of Icebergs breaking off and heading to the ocean— make sure you walk under the bridge to the beach on the other side of the highway to see diamond beach!! This place is amazing!!

A huge lagoon and glacier with giant floating icebergs that were gorgeous to look at. An easy stop directly on the ring road :)

Our favorite thing in Iceland I have to say.The water is turquoise, you see the icebergs floating there and slowly moving eveng clashing. On top of that, you have the seals just peacefully diving and swimming between the ice mountains... astonishing. Pictures cannot describe it.The boat tours were closed as we were there at the beginning of April. Apparently they only work during summertime. Bucket list for next time!

I’ve never seen a glacier lagoon before so I thought it was awesome. Took a boat tour too which was pretty cool.

One of the best spots for photos. Free parking, sparkling views, and cold weather. Bundle up and take tons of pictures!

Compared to 6 years ago there was much less floating ice. All seemed to have been packed in far distance due to strong wind lately. Also the walk was much more restricted. Still one of the must see stops on the road. There ice cave trips and food trucks by the parking stop. Its better to reserve the ice cave trip a few weeks ahead because it gets full. The souvenir shop is little but sells postcards, icelandic clothes and the ordinary stuff.

This place is SO beautiful! A beautiful contrast to all the green and brown you see in lots of the other parts of the country (at least in the summer). We parked in the lot next to some food vendors and just walked around the lagoon a little bit then drove across the road to Diamond Beach. Its a little farther from Reykjavik than some of the other popular destinations but so worth it! Theres a hotel nearby or you could make your way to Vik to stay for the night like we did.

I wish I could give more stars here as it’s one of the most stunning places I have ever visited. It was worth the drive, took about 5 hours from Reykjavík and we stayed over in Vik on the way. Breathtaking looking at seals on the icebergs and walking along the beach with washed up icebergs. Never experienced anything like it and loved it!

The largest glacier of Iceland which is now unfortunately melting due to the climate change. The glacier has formed a big lake which is 70-300 meters deep which flows into the smallest river of Iceland (nearly 400 metersand into the North Atlantic Ocean. A mesmerising place where u see a view of Glacier - Lake - River and ocean at all one place. And the fresh ice shines like blue diamonds here when sunlight falls on them. Truely a once in a lifetime kind of experience.It’s cold and windy there so be prepared with some warm clothes.

Visited 2 times, always breathtaking!I recommend to book in advance a tour with a Zodiac (funny, fast and get very close to the glacier wall, which is around 8km far from the departure). In 15-20 min you are close to glacier passing by beautiful icebergs. In total you stay in the lagoon around 60min, enough to enjoy it. If you are lucky you can see the iceber cracking in the lagoon. There is also the opportunity to go on an amphibious, less expensive but slower and with more people: in any case book in advance.They provide you with special outfits to not suffer the wind or the cold.It’s a must-have experience, the glacier is retreating and one day, sadly, the lagoon won’t be anymore full of icebergs.After the lagoon, don’t forget to visit the dimonds beach just after the bridge were the icebergs melt on a black sand never end beach!If you want to see more picture or ask me questions don’t hesitate to contact me on Instagram: @francesco_bonamassa

Really fall in love with this place!Very beautiful!Our way to here is breathtaking!It was foggy and looked like a fairy land :)I was here in summer and had to wear wind jacket and daunenjacke or winter jacket is enough.It was cold in summer. The water is super cold.It must visit place if you are in iceland.

Small ice blue icebergs and sight of seals, in the middle of the summer.How cool is that ?Its a cool (literallywalk around the Jökulsárlón where one can take beautiful pictures of the nearby ice blocs.However be careful the water is really cold.

One of the beautiful galcier lagoons in Iceland. The duckboat tour was good. Its a bit far from the capital of Reykjavik therefore its recommended to stay near to the lagoon for a night and visit it in the morning.There is also a cafe to enjoy some hot drinks after seeing the glaciers
