Old-world hotel restaurant with classy crystal chandeliers, plus cocktails in the library lounge.
The best fish and chips Ive ever had in my life, cooked to perfection. Excellent cup of coffee after. Staff nice and not overbearing. Great view of the river and London Eye from our table
Where to begin with my experience at Gillrays?!We arrived 15 minutes late, however the lovely lady at the front of house was very accommodating and took us to a table over looking the river, which had a nice view.We were a party of 4 and out for a birthday dinner and theatre trip for my mum. 3 of us were quite dressed up, however the fourth member was down for a visit for the week so only had limited clothes, and as this was a last minute booking, was dressed down compared to the rest of us.When we sat down, I immediately felt as though we were being judged by the staff due to the way we spoke, and the way we looked. The first waiter came over and gave us our menus and placed water on the table, with hardly any communication at all. He then returned to the ordering station, where other waiters gathered and all seemed to be looking in our direction and making comments. When we were ready to order, the same waiter kept on making comments regarding the way we wanted our steak and kept on trying to, what seemed like educate us, on the fact the steak is old aged and therefore comes out more cooked then normal steak. My mum was still adamant she would like her sirloin well done with no blood, and he kept repeating that it is old aged and doesnt need to be so cooked. Again, she insisted on having it well done and he made a sarcastic remark about it taking 35 minutes minimum to get it well done. We were all happy to wait. The 3 of us all then ordered steak, 2 rare and 1 medium. I asked for the creamy spinach as a side, but was told by the waiter that it wasnt very nice and he recommends I have the salad. Being a slightly bigger boy, I wasnt sure whether this was a genuine recommendation, or an insult, however ordered the salad. We also ordered a house red, chips, and some bread for starters. Our waiter then brought us our knives to choose from. The lady in the pink jumper on our table picked the pink knife, and again a sarcastic comment was made regarding it matching her jumper. It was as if the waiter was trying to be facetious but had no reason to be. We all then had our steaks brought over to the table, which were ok, however my medium steak, and the rare steak, were cooked exactly the same. Considering it took 35 minutes to come out, you would expect the steak would be cooked to perfection?Next came the bill! This is where I would URGE YOU to be vigilant and check every item on your bill. If I am honest, I rarely check a bill, ESPECIALLY at a restaurant like Gillrays, as I expect everything to be perfect from start to finish considering the look of the place, the prices and the 5* service they seem to pride themselves on! The bill came to £380. The waiter took the card, tapped it on the terminal, took the receipt, and walked off. We thought nothing of it and left as we had a theatre reservation.Fast forward to the next day and I could not help but think something was off about the bill so called up to ask for a receipt to be emailed to me for expense purposes. What comes next is very odd! The front of house lady explains she will speak to my waiter and will obtain the receipt and email it to me. Instead I receive a call back about 2 minutes later from the same lady, explaining that there is an overcharge on my bill (even though I never called up with this as an issueand that she will need to speak to her manager on Monday in order to get them to send me the bill and fix any issue on the bill!As it stands, I am still waiting for a manager to call me back. I can understand a £10/£20 over charge, but according to my calculation we were overcharged by about £130/£140 and have still not had any call back. I would think this would be a top priority for the manager to call me back, however as it is not I have no choice but to leave this review, and will be writing to Marriot hotels to explain what has happened
Food was excellent, well cooked and well presented, though the chilli squid mayo was super salty.Would happily return.
Gillray steak houseLocated at the heart of Westminster. With views from London eye, thames - that has the Uber boat etc. The steak house is located Inside of london Marriott county house. With this restaurant, reservations is the only way to get in. I’ll try not to talk about the architecture because words don’t describe itThe food was fantastic, I had the pork ribs and salt and vinegar chips . Very filling but hey it had to because it didn’t come cheap. The waiters were polite and helpful and the food didn’t take a lot of time. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any “hold belle” bread. For those who don’t know- “hold belle” meal is that bread they serve before your order arrives.I really wanted to have desserts but was very underwhelmed by the options available. I really think the desert could be betterOverall it’s 7/10. Very bougie . A nice cozy environment for a date, proposal, any thing that doesn’t involve kids running around or crying.Love it and would love to revisit ( when I have extra pounds to spend - which I doubt would happen anytime soon)
Fab deal 2 steak meals and glass prosecco before lockdown. Want to visit again though as fantastic location. Bar amazing 😍
Gillray is inside the Marriott County Hall Hotel. Gillray has a lovely ambience. The servers are friendly and warm. The food presentation is minimalistic and the flavours are full. Highly recommended after a walk at the Big Ben.
Had an excellent breakfast this morning.Cant beat looking over London as the city begins to wake up. I ordered scrambled egg and smoked salmon bagle. Perfectly cooked, good quality eggs. Was served by a lovely lady called Vyan who was bubbly and friendly, really made my morning emails and breakfast enjoyable.
It was just ok. For the price of the food does NOT equate to a great value OR FLAVOR. Fraction of the price would have been correct.
Wonderful lunch at a lovely place! Ordered Burgers w Bacon Jam & Sticky Toffee Pudding- all delicious! Staff friendly and helpful👍
Great Food and Great Service. So why not 5 Stars?...The Atmosphere: Tired looking restaurant.Solution: Re-upholster the horrible Grey Vinyl chairs with Dark brown leather vinyl and redo the terrible scuffed wooden floors. The Bar at Entrance has new carpet and newer chairs etc and looks modern- the restaurant frankly needs renovation.
We were very hungry after hours of walking around London and completing the London Eye trip. This was the first restaurant we came across so decided to try it out.The place looks classy with great views of River Thames and Westminster.I tried their rib eye steak while my wife ordered the trout.Prices are on the higher side. We paid around £160 for 3 persons but the quality of food is top notch.A lunch to remember.
Rubbish, service slow, bars staff take extremely long time to make a gin and tonic. All bottles at the top of the bar are covered in dust. And for the experience, expensive.
I had a wonderful meal with a view of the river. The waiter, called Micheal was so professional, friendly and impeccable good mannered. I will come back again very soon.
Food was absolutely brilliant would definitely recommend to family and friends
We loved the service and the atmosphere. We were very well treated by Karla she was very friendly and professional , she knew how to guide us through the menu and the wine list. We had an amazing time and for sure we will be coming back for more in our next holiday.
Gillrays is a fabulous Steak House in the most gorgeous setting. The food and wine was divine... The fillet Steak was meaty and perfect just with salt... But the Veal and Chapel Down sauce was a wonderful addition. Finally a huge thanks to the staff who gave the most perfect warm and friendly service Ive had in years!!
restaurante was almost empty and they told us waiting time 20 to 25 minutes. why ? even if the about 80% empty tables would be reserved why 20min waiting time. keep your steaks.... we went to angus steak house and had a great steak. thanks for that. was properly even better than yours.
Had a great lunch pre our London Eye experience ... from start to finish service was good but our server Vyann was excellent; knowledgeable about the food and the history of this iconic eatery, delivered with a warm smile.
The services was lovely. Although I didnt order a full meal I was delighted with what I ordered. The chill fried squid was delicious, fresh and perfectly prepared. I would go back for this dish alone. My sticky toffee pudding was not overly sweet. I would have preferred to pour my own sauce. However, because it wasnt swimming in sauce I was able to take what I wanted and leave the rest. My friend ordered the chcolate chop brownie. If you ave a rich dark chocolate palette you will love it! I would suggest eating it with two other people. The staff was very friendly and adequately attentive. I will certainly come back for the full dinner service and possibly afternoon tea.
Good steak and excellent view
Food was amazingly good. Atmosphere was excellent. We ordered a cocktail and a burger which my daughter and I split. Alia said the burger was the best she had in her life......Aaaaaa top 5 yes. It was Dam good. The reason i am giving 4 stars is the hostese was abit too much. We ended uo eating at the bar....for someone SOOOOO busy she talked too much and took too long to put us on the waiting list...keot discouraging us by telling us that they were busy and too many people waiting.......we sat at the bar....irdered a drink and decided to order a burger and split it....and irder more food when we go inside. BURGER was very good.....but anither waitress came by and said....oh so you dont want the table now huh.....so we were like....okay......
We were looking forward to a wonderful steak dinner but unfortunately were very disappointed. The service was poor. We waited an hour and a half for our food with no attention in the meantime. No offer of water, drinks or bread to the table. Furthermore they made no attempt to rectify the situation until we asked. Would not recommend this place for a pleasant experience.
I was in this restaurant in june 26, I ordered 2 beers two burgers and 2 sets or halloum stick and whole set was 120-130€. Beer was good , so was sticks as over prized they were, but burgers where so horribly dry and little bit burnt. I did not recomded this place to anyone since there are lot of more restaurants in that area with lower prices. This is my opinion. Ps toilets were awesome reminds me roman spa resort.
Tired hotel restaurant with zero atmosphere charging steakhouse prices for fairly average food. Decent views through dirty windows. Does not measure up to the standard of London steakhouses in this price range by any measure!Food: 2.5Drink: 4Atmosphere: 0Service: 2Price/value: 210.5/25 or 2.1/57:30pm on a Saturday night. Nice first impression on arriving through the first door into a well stocked and impressive bar room with its own small bar style dining tables.Dining room attached which is where the effect dies. Tired room full of mainly hotel guests. Looking at the website and photos we thought this to be a classic steakhouse night and dressed for the occasion. No real point as the room was filled with very casual diners and fair few kids drawing, playing, and doing what kids do. Table was a little sticky, windows onto very nice views were filthy and obviously hadn’t been cleaned in a long while.Overall set the atmosphere comparable to TGI Fridays. Fine if you know what you’re in for!Ordered fried squid and asparagus to start, and a tomahawk steak done medium for 2 to share. A few sides which had been waiting under a hot lamp for some time judging by the state of them.I’ve been to many a London steakhouse and I have to say it’s the first time I’ve ever had to cut my own sharing steak for 2. Very awkward on a large table where we also had our own plates. Bizarre.Steak quality was so/so. Decent char but under seasoned and watery - perhaps not properly defrosted before cooking. Sauces were congealed by the time they reached us.Overall it was intensely disappointing. For the price you have literally dozens of better options in the locale. If you’re staying at the hotel and want a quick and easy meal then probably does the job!Suggest a refurb or turning it into a cool hotel sports bar that also happens to have steak. Wouldn’t be far off and could be a lot of fun!
Nice view if you have the right seat. The staff was very polite. In our party of 5, we all got different cuts of meat and it was all tough. The wine was not great and the red cabbage that came with my meal was switched out for finely chopped mixed vegetables which would have been nice if I wasnt allergic to one of vegetables in the mix.
We typically love Marriott- we are Titanium members with huge brand loyalty. But this meal was probably the worst meal we have had in a long long time. We waited over an hour just to receive our appetizer (soup); my husband and son ordered medium rare steaks that came out with not a hint of pink; it would be well done in most places but seemed especially egregious in a steakhouse; they offered to redo one steak but that also came out overdone (so we just sucked it up and ate it). My fish was overdone as well- which is even sadder in England. Two hours later we had a bill for $200 and ended up walking to McDonalds to feed our kids.
Service was really good. Food was very mediocre for a restraunt having an amazing spot by the eye. Triple cooked chips tasted like they had been re-warmed a few times. Fish and peas were really nice, batter was ok! Dont be fooled by the £15 steak and chips add because I couldnt find it on the menu. Disappointed.
Very disappointing experience. Theatre menu was booked for 5.45pm, however food was so slow to come out, we had to rush our main course and hurry out, without getting a dessert. The main took nearly an hour to come out. They then charged us as if we did have 3 courses, even after trying to explain we didnt have time for the dessert. Eventually, they took the extras off the bill. Furthermore, the steak was very average and they forgot to bring out the sauce.
I chose this brilliant restaurant for the proposal day to my girlfriend on Valentines Day. Everything was amazing. Lovely and friendly staff. They were very supportive, and they did help me make a wonderful night for my lovely fiance and me. We will surely go there again for having another joyful night with their tasty foods and great stakes. 100% recommended.
Ate here for a week. Steaks and Ribs are great. Breakfast is decent.
Amazing space for a relaxed drink in the bar which specialises in gin. Access from the South Bank or through the County Hall Marriott Hotel which is equally as impressive. Views across the river. Staff could act slightly more enthusiastic but understandable given the current challenges with the hospitality industry.
Beautiful fillet steak, triple cooked chips and side shrimp pasta dish. Dessert called marathon was tasteless and my friend ordered the rhubarb tart which hardly had any custard and was served cold, would be better warm.Bar area when you walk in is really nice but the restaurant table set up was very plain. Would be better set up with table cloths for a more luxurious experience. Hardly any staff so had to wait a long time between courses and to ask to top up our water. Staff unfortunately not very attentive and seemed rushed/stressed. Tried many times to gain eye contact with waitor/waitress and it felt like they were purposley ignoring us. Overall would think twice about going back especially due to lack of service and the the money we paid.
Went in for a posh tea and bottomless gin. The restaurant was lovely and relaxing. The sarnies and scones were lovely, not so much the cakes. They were soggy and didnt please the palate. The gin was so watered down, it didnt taste anything like gin....more of tonic water. A bit disappointed although service was excellent.
Great restaurant, the room is stunning with tall ceilings and plenty of woodwork amd great views of the Thames embankment. The staff are very attentive and are always checking on you so no need to flag someone down. The steak was Grade-A and cooked to medium rare perfection.
Great staff, very welcoming. The food choices was amazing. We ate there 2 days in a row. The quality of food was out if this world. I have attached my favourite dish. Ten out of ten.
Had an amazing celebratory meal. Food was delicious, wine perfect and service was good. Only downside was plates were being cleared from our table whilst one of us were still eating.
Gillrays could be considered very expensive (especially the drinks, £12-£60+ for a whisky), but the food is first class. This isnt just a normal restaurant 5 star rating, this is the real thing. The £49 T-bone steak was to die for, simple amazing (complements to whoever was the cheff on 29th Feb 2020). The chips (both the Truffle Chips £7 and the Sweet Potato Fries £5were by far the best Ive tasted, anywhere. All the staff a very professional and sincere. The place was spotless and had some nice views of the river. If you can save up just to even try this restaurant once, do it, you will not be disappointed.
Omg omg omg. Best steak ever. It was a corporate dinner and the selection for meals from starters to dessert were beyond anything I have had. Great service and delicious meals and dessert. Highly recommend the restaurant.
3.5 / 5: It’s a decent option if you don’t feel like wandering out of the hotel. Price: expensive / a la carte / small portions. Steaks; my rib eye was done perfectly to medium rare, however the other two steaks were not cooked to order (rare- came out medium which is baffling. Complimentary house gin as a digestif was a nice touch. Service: ok. Presentation: good as well as the atmosphere/environment.
Great wedding anniversary spent in this restaurant. We had a set menu and it was well worth it! Polite staff and tasty food and complimentary drinks and dessert for our Anniversary. Lovely.
Really lovely experience overall, classy place, nice view over the river and the north bank. Service was ok but they took a bit too much time before coming to our table to bring menus/take the order/check on us, etc. I had actually already eaten half of my meal and had to actually call them and remind them to bring the drink I ordered. The rib eye was absolutely fantastic, absolutely recommended with red wine sauce and mushrooms or broccoli. They brought us a complimentary aperitif before a complimentary sponge cake dessert because of our birthday, which was very lovely. Then, the panna cotta was absolutely divine.Wonderful experience, as I would expect for the prices there. Would no doubt come again.
Arriving at the Gilrays Steakhouse & Bar had a lovely feel to it, as we walked over the Westminster Bridge, which you can imagine is busy at the best of times, due to location. Once arriving at the courtyard, welcomed by a Mini Ben Clock Tower which is pretty cool!We made a slight mistake by going to the wrong restaurant within the building but taken to the correct part of the restaurant, which was helpful.Excellent table, with a view out onto the Thames and we, went for the Sunday roast option as it was a birthday treat. We were spoiled on the day, as we tested two very higher end location restaurants, which we dont necessarily do often. One of the two downfalls we had was the air con was right in front of us, which it became quite cold and the second was the burnt Yorkshire pudding, as we all know gravy in the york is a crucial element to a roast! :)The staff were friendly, helpful and quick. It was a quiet time in the restaurant, but it could have just been the time we arrived. It has A little bit for everyone, but we did notice the prices are quite pricy away from what we had, but that is quite standard in London for these places. Worth trying to see what offers are going too!We give it A****LDT x
I don’t usually eat steak out as I just don’t find places in London that do a great steak but I came across Gillrays and visited with a friend to catch up and we have promised to keep going back. The steak was the best steak I have had anywhere in London. They are definitely specialists. The presentation of the food was lovely. The cocktails very nice. They offered us a table with a view of the river and it was stunning to sit by the window and watch the river and the city lights. It’s a lovely romantic spot. Staff were very friendly and polite as we didn’t realise we had to book but we were treated very well throughout our stay there. Definitely recommend for anyone who lives a good steak. And if you are vegan, you can still enjoy a lovely drink at the bar. Location is perfect as it’s a few mins walk from Westminster station and opposite the St Thomas hospital at the Marriott hotel. You cannot miss it.
One of the best steakhouses in London with definitely the best views in London. The prime rib with bone is the best! Service is good, price point reasonable for this kind of experience. If you are at the south bank and fancy a steak, go to gillrays.
Been here two times, both times the food and the service here did not disappoint. Had the regular menu(rib eyefor the first time, and 3-course set menu(rumpfor the second time. Steak were both cooked to ordered and succulent. Most of the starters were mediocre(poached pear, mixed vegetable soup, and fried mackerel), except for the duck liver pate which looks very normal but was surprisingly delicious and flavorful. Deserts were good overall, but if you want something refreshing don’t pick the chocolate tart, but choose the lemon posset. It’s got a really nice and well-decorated bar. Where you can enjoy both the view of House of Parliament through windows and your drink at the same time. Really nice restaurant with great ambiance and spacious between tables. Definitely will recommend this place to my friends.PS. The staff training definitely needs some improvements. Our waitress did not know their kitchen served soup and had to ask others for information. Sometimes they even forgot our requests.
Lovely cocktail bar and restaurant as part of the Marriott hotel. Unfortunately I was only there for a short time for a meeting and went to the bar.The restaurant looks very welcoming and food of a high quality. If staying at the Marriott the breakfast and dining is located here too.
Went for our anniversary and the service started ok. Then somewhere between appetizers and main course our waitress went missing and a new waiter started serving us. Weird. Then she came back, offered us a box of knives to choose from, nothing else was said and then POOF she was gone again. The wait for our food went from slow to slowest ever in the world of steakhouses. The new waiter was apologetic but the manager and hostess on duty refused to speak to us after we complained to our waiter about service. Oh! The steaks were ok.....the only decent thing we had were the.....bone marrow that accompanied the steak. Thats it. It was a disappointment for us because we read great reviews on this restaurant. Im adding pictures because it looks good but thats it.
This restaurant certainly serves excellent food with a view. Let me get my only gripe out of the way first. The menu on their website linked here on maps seems to be outdated. The prices on dishes has gone up, around £10 for what I ordered. Also be aware you may not get a view of Parliament, or even the Thames if you get placed in the back of the room. It seems the wait staff try to fill up the window seats first, however. One final clarification on something I was unsure of, yes, this is the restaurant in the Mariott and it is on ground level, not at the top floor or anything. The staff here are very friendly, the kind to pull your chair out for you. The food was excellent. I ordered the chicken. The meat was perfectly cooked and tender and just perfectly seasoned. The others in my party ordered sirloin steaks medium rare. I did not try the steak, but they claimed it was one of the best steaks they have ever had. We also ordered deserts. I had the ice cream. With that you can choose up to 3 different flavors. The salted caramel was delicious. I would recommend coming here around sunset so you can see the lights come on lining the Thames.
Gillrays was brilliant. The location of the restaurant is in the old County Hall full of elegant decor and steeped in history. The staff were very attentive and we were not rushed at all. From every table you have a view of the Thames, Big Ben and other iconic sites along the Thames. The ambience was fantastic, you are not crowded in. It was my daughters 18th and the staff made a lovely fuss of her making sure she was the guest of honour. The food was stunning and beautifully presented. The value was excellent with a set menu plus cocktail for £30.We will definitely be back and would fully recommend it,
Came here for breakfast. We were met with attentive service and a very pretty and welcoming ambience. With such an entrance we had high hopes. We ordered the eggs Benedict and the continental breakfast. The continental breakfast was ok. The muffins were bland and the fruit wasnt plump and delicious. It felt cheap. They used store bought jelly albeit a large collection some of which I had never seen. So we ended up getting some fruit and quark with some bread and eggs. Then bread was very disappointing. My eggs Benedict was also below my expectation. After my first attempt was not cooked correctly the second attempt was completely overcooked. I didnt tell the manager as I didnt want to insult or frustrate him.So I ate it anyway and ended putting my eggs Benedict on bread from the continental breakfast since the bread that came with it was gross.Through all of this the service stayed positive and didnt pressure me one or the other. The check was also wrong when they delivered it. Once we brought it to their attention they fixed it.So sadly we will not be coming back for a while to see if maybe they improve.
