Genesis in San Juan

You would think having your business in the heart of san juan your food should be cooked with love. The fish was frozen, salty, full of raw onions all on top of it and over cooked. I had no salad and dry plantan..will not go back here..

Food was so good and service was amazing, such lovely employees!

Food and customer service was excellent. My wife had a chicken dish. The chicken was ver moist. The desserts were also excellent.We were walking by this restaurant and local said th "food is very this my go to spot" boy was right.I also recommend this placeIf I could give this place 6 stars I wouldThanks for great food and excellent customer service.

Was planning to go to the place down the street but the wait was too long. Ended up here. The server/host was overwhelmed because the place was very busy. We waited a bit but the food was amazing! Garlic shrimp appetizer was delicious! Mofongo with chicken was on point! My husband and son liked their food too. Once the place calmed down the staff seemed more attentive. They were pleasant overall. Afterwards I heard from others who went to the other place and didnt have good things to say so Im glad we ended up finding this place. Id definitely go back.

Great food and service. The piña colada was one of the best I ever had. The ham croquettes were delicious as well the steak mofongo. Delicious.

The kids enjoyed their steak, the Alfredo was just “ok”. The seafood Paella was sub-par, had a strong smell and a lot of pin bones. Service was fair. Prices were a little high for food and atmosphere. All in all, I’ve had better experiences.

This is a very nice and cozy restaurant. Our server was nice and very prompt to help us with anything we needed during our visit. Highly recommend this place and the steak mofongo which was delicious .

My wife and I loved this place the food was delicious and our server was great.

Took forever just to get our drinks. My wife ordered the empanada and got something totally different from what she ordered. Otherwise the food was good, not the best.

The service was terrible. They had us waiting over an hour for food and when asked for an update the waiter would rudely dismiss us and walk away. When the food came it was disgusting. we ordered churrasco and the meat that we got was a completely different flavor and texture. We could not even finish one bite.

Bad experience, the service was really bad. It took really long for us to get our food, over 1 hr and when we said to the waiter the food took long, he said "well the next table waited longer 1hr and a half. Rude reply. The food was not good at all, never ever going to this place again. Not recommended if you are visiting. Take your business to a more decent place. We were there for 3 hrs when we couldve be touring San Juan instead of waiting for a long time.

I only put one star because I am unable to select Zero. Customer service is slow. Very slow. Over 1 hours wait time after they took our order, maybe they need more servers. When we asked about our food they waiter justified himself as "you waited one hour but the next table waited longer" , what type of response is that. Never coming back again.

Food is really good! My waiter Jose was really nice (4/22). First time I had good empanadas 😋

Food is quite good here, mojito 👌 very tasty. We were going to go to a different restaurant but they were booked. Continued to walk and guy standing outside handed us a menu. He was very nice, we ate outside, service was prompt. Highly recommend.

The food is excellent. We had the garlic shrimp as appetizer & mofungo. Uri was awsome but he had a lot of tables to service. i give 4 stars because the sevice was slow.

This was the worst customer service I have ever received from a restaurant period. Visitors beware. Do yourself a favor and never dine here. The Genesis in Viejo San Juan, PR has an older gentlemen, possibly the owner, who has terrible manners and should not be representing this business. Firstly, this server pressured us into purchasing Pina colada when I requested a simple local beer. To support the business, I bought two for me and my wife. Secondly, the waiter got our order of empanadillas con camarones incorrect. Thats okay, but when my wife tried to pronounce the dish to order it, he was very disrespectful, making fun of our difficulty in doing so. And he still got the order wrong. Attempting to be lighthearted we continued ordering our food. We order mofongo, and when I asked for the menu, he said that I shouldnt order anymore. He then surprised us with a bill that has 25 percent gratuity with absolutely no clear indication of such. This is not a business you should spend your money with. Buyer beware.

We went here because we were too hungry to wait for a highly sought out restaurant. They need to improve their customer service. Mojito was watered down and I sent it back but still got charged. I ordered fish and rice & beans. Fish tasted like chicken. They served white rice & refried beans as their “rice & beans”. I was disappointed they didn’t try to make it right especially after spending over $100 at their establishment. They’re a really nice family but need to improve customer service.

The food here was AWESOME!!! Steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned so well. Shrimp w/garlic sauce very tasty.

Summary: Really Enjoyed the Food and Service here and would highly recommend for authentic cuisine. The interior could use some asthetic upgrades but the food and people are key in my mind. For appetizer I had a cheese empanadillo...very light not greasy and full of flavor. For libation I had a passion fruit mojito...the mojito was probably hands down the best one I have had and I have been to little Cuba in Florida. Finally for the main dish I had the Steak Mofungo Relleno with mixed plantains (savory and slightly sweet). This dish was amazing very savory with a definite unamami bomb of flavor! I finished my entire plate and the portion size was very generous! Our server had an amazing attitude...made some great recommendations and the food was delivered in a high quality timely manner. I would def go again and recommend to anyone visiting nearby!

Such a great place to have food. I am a very fussy person when it comes to food. The server, Anniel was so nice... way above and beyond his capabilities and made the most delicious food I ever had. I loved everything about this place. Reccomended.

The line at the highly-rated restaurant down the street was hours long, so I popped in here for a quick, early dinner based on the high ratings. A big family had just left and I think there was one other table occupied. Its very simple inside, no tablecloths as depicted, hollow and loud. The waitress first seated me below a blaring television so I was reseated, but there was a gentleman who walked around and randomly sat down, staring at his phone which was playing loud (?music (maybeon his speaker, too. Owner? Relative? It was strange.I dont eat meat so settled on the shrimp with garlic sauce. Very tasty but the shrimp were rubbery. The rice and beans were excellent. Service was fast and polite, but atmosphere zero.

Super slow service. Empanadas had tiny pre-frozen shrimp. Been here 1 hour and still waiting on my steak dinner. Skip this place.

If you can skip this place go ahead and do that. Went here and the food was decent, but the service was so terrible Ill never go again.The waiter didnt even entertain asking management to slipt the checks even though we had the only party in the restaurant. Then the toad looking waiter (yes the waiter resembled a toadargued with me about the tip after I told him it was included already. I literally showed him he included itat 18%. As I reviewed the rest of the check he hovered over us waiting for us to pay. Then after we paid he again hovered over us pushing us out the door.Again food was decent but service made this expirence terrible.

My burger was dry and not seasoned. My cousin wasnt impressed with her shrimp. The fried snapper looked good and another customer said it was good.

Today I went again to this restaurant. Food delicious as always. Service is very good.

We enjoyed the sightseeing in Old San Juan Puerto Rico and we needed a place to sit and have lunch .I personally like places that are simple and they show history ( amazing happy hour btw .We ordered breaded steak and chicken steak as well, service was impecable and food was so fresh and delicious.We recommend this place !!

Churrasco steak with white rice and beans was good. Also the arroz mamposteado was to die for lol... My wife enjoyed it as well. Great service as well. Would definitely go back.

Pure hole in the wall goodness, loved this little Puerto Rican gem! Happy hour is amazing... beers 2 for $5, margaritas/sangria/piña coladas 2 for $10. Had the Trifongo with Churrasco which was delicious! The staff is on the relaxing island vibe. They were very friendly and attentive.

Warm, friendly, and unpretentious. I have to say, I was a little skeptical, but I was one over by the home style cooked meal, and the great attentive service from the wait staff.Their drink specials were a great start. Their Margaritas were perfect for the warm humid night. They also serve, cold beers, wine, and soft drinks.I had the Mafongo with garlic chicken over a basic salad, with a side of sriracha sauce for an extra kicked up heat. Just the way I like it. My friend had the fried pork chops, cooked, and seasoned perfectly with fresh plantains. He said it was very good, even though he couldnt finish it. I think the wait staff was a little disappointed with how much food he had left.Again, I would strongly recomend Genesis for a family style quality restaurant, without the glitzy, gimmicky pretentuousness. Simple down home Puerto Rican cooking, and hospitality.

A lot of the restaurants were super crowded on this strip and had a long wait time so we walked into this place for drinks which turned into dinner and dessert! Food was delicious, the service was great and prices were reasonable!

La comida era espectacular, en sabor y en precentacion. Los meseros eran bien amables. The food was amazing, from the flavor to the presentation. The waiters were courteous and attentive. I recommend this restaurant with no doubt.

The menu has all different styles of food, but they are a jack of all trades master of none. To start the side salad is just shredded lettuce with a slice of tomato, the dressing choices are french or oil and vinegar only. Before the food comes out you are brought 3 plastic containers of chili sauce, tomato and either a spicy mayo or some weird version of thousand Island indicating the food is all flavor regardless of what you order. There were 5 people in our group who all ordered different things and the best description from a single person when asked how is your food was was fine. The other four of us wouldnt even say ours was fine. Half of the meals were way over salted and the rest were food adjacent. The service also matched the food, service adjacent. You are better of eating anywhere else in San Juan than here.

Great food, a/c, and pina coladas!We had the shrimp mufungo and the fried pork. Both were amazing! The service was friendly, the atmosphere was simple but not too loud. I’d definitely recommend this spot for a great meal when you’re in San Juan!

The service, food, and drinks were good! This is a small restaurant in Old San Juan. Prices were reasonable and portion size is excellent.

If the service was a little faster I would have given them 5 stars. Food was great, our server was very nice!

Service is fine. Drinks were good. The food, however was like dried cardboard! And my empanada was just a thin piece of fried chicken. We asked our cab driver to take us to a place with good Puerto Rican food, but he totally missed the mark. Maybe his wife works there. Save your self and eat elsewhere. And to top it all off, our bill was outrageous for the cardboard food. Wouldnt have minded the price if the food was actually good.

Nice food but extremely bad service. I was urged to pay the bill before I am finished. After paying the bill andspending 10 minuntes finishing my meal, I found it was raining outside, so I asked if I could stay longer cause someone will pick me up in 20 minutes. But ! I was refused. The restaurant was totally empty!! And a group of pepole has been lingering there since I came. Very bad impression. Why did I have to pay the check before I am done？ Why couldnt I stay where I was for another 20 minutes waiting for my driver? Why could others linger at your restaurant without interruption？ If I had foreseen what happened, I would not have given you one cent!

Stopped in while our cruise was in San Juan PR. This was a nice place to retreat from the cruise terminal. Just two blocks away. Food was great Latin cuisine. Get 2 Magna premium lagers for $5. Friendly staff!!

Outstanding Mofongo. Decent prices and the beers are cold! Easy walk from the Sheraton and cruise port.

The reviews are kind of all over the board, but I had a great experience here. I ordered the tortilla española, and it arrived with ham, which I was not expecting. I am a vegetarian and explained to the waitress that I couldnt eat it. Without hesitation, she said she could remake it without the ham. Within a few minutes I had another version, meat free. The waitress was very friendly, and the food was really good. In fact, it was better than any I have had in España. And the prices? $8 for breakfast seems very reasonable to a girl from Chicago.

Stopped in here for lunch while in old San Juan. Our waitress was rude. When we sat down, she brought over menus, and took our drink order, then left us for about 10 minutes. When she came back, I asked if she had any specials as we noticed that all the other patrons were getting lunch special menus. She then handed us lunch menus and asked if we were ready to order within 5 seconds of handing the menus to us. When we were about to start giving the order she walked away and left us again for another 5 minutes. She returned and we placed our order. as we were waiting, we noticed about 4 other tables that had come in and ordered after us start getting their food. Weve now been waiting 30 minutes for 3 lunch specials. Not once does she come back and check on us during the meal nor can she be bothered to bring us our check. It was like she couldnt be bothered to serve us or be even remotely decent to us at all. One of the other waiters was kind enough to check on us and get us our check towards the end of the meal and he was working his butt off with other tables. If we would have had him as our server I highly doubt I would have had this awful experience at this restaurant.
