Cauberg 4, 6301 BT Valkenburg, Netherlands, Maastricht
Roman-built marl quarry with walking & tram tours through its art-filled underground passages.
The bus tour is very charming. It felt very interesting to see the details of people thought from the past, and to see how they collected pieces of history and art. The only moment I wish to have a dedicated English-speaking tour, because using headphones is not very convenient.
Nice place and when you know the history of that place it adds value to it
great tour either walking or by train through 70km of tunnels
Nice tourguide, bit boring really but thats subjective
Fantastic tour, fantastic tour guide, definitely recommend.
This was a very cool experience!!! Our guide „Ivo“ did an amazing job explaining everything and including our kids between 6 and 8. They received flashlights and were allowed to lead the way which kept them busy and engaged the whole 60 minute tour! Definitely worth it and we recommend it to anyone visiting Valkenburg.
Worth a visit, it is fascinating how everything is kept and preserved throughout the years. Cannot wait to go and see what the Christmas markets look like in December
Fascinating and informative walking tour provided by our guide Harry!
Commentary was only in Dutch. App link for location gave very limited information. Very cold inside so need a jumper or light coat.
They give you a sheet written English when you pay at the entrance which explains what you will see .
The woman at the ticket booth is so rude. Respect, at least the people who cant speak your language.
Great experience for a good price. The guide really nice!!
Very nice Christmas market with lot of decorations and shops inside. Also you get to meet Santa !!The cost of the things sold inside were very reasonable. This place is a nice weekend getaway if you are living in Netherlands.
Unfortunately its closed due to Hard Lockdown. Normally ticket charge €7.50.Municipal cave Valkenburg, a wonder of man and nature. Let your guide lead you in our most beautiful quarry. A journey to the center of our earth to discover geological treasures…
Went to the 2021 Kerst Markt! Very creative!
Went there for the famous Christmas market this year (2021and it definitely gives you a real Christmas feeling. The atmosphere was great but then again, what do you expect of a Christmas market in a cave, quite an experience right? The only thing they can do better is to get market stalls that sell stuff that are related to Christmas.
Its nice if you like a cave filled with tourist trap junk during Christmas time. Would definitely not recommend the 8,50 euro they charge to go inside and see stuff made in China.
Cave is very interesting, but there was to much stuff that had nothing to do with Christmas. Very poor choice of food at the Markt.
Nice Christmas market but lack of food
This is a fun Christmas market to do one time just to check out the caves and Christmas decorations. The Christmas lights are pretty and it’s a unique atmosphere. The market itself is disappointing. We didn’t really see anything unique or handmade besides 2 stalls. A lot of things seem like wholesale goods you can get on Amazon. We went on a Thursday morning and it was not crowded at all. There is a soup stand that sells really good hot soups. Not much good food other than that. You’ll exit the same way you came in, just a different split. All the routes will dead end so you can’t get lost. The address to get to the cave is 6301 BT and it’ll lead you right to the entrance.
A large Christmas market inside the caves. The experience of walking through the Christmassy decorated cave and enjoying a wide variety of stalls is unique in itself. This market is open from 13 Nov to 30 Dec (in 2021and is part of the larger Valkenburg festivities. Definitely worth a visit
An interesting man made cave which is definitely worth visiting. 70km of man made tunnels that go up to 15m underground is definitely impressive. Tours are an hour which gives a very good view of how it is living underground. The reason behind the 2 stars is the slight disappointment of no English tours available. Neither an English audio tour, nor an English guided tour. Considering the amount of international tourists, would have been quite nice to have it. The English "information sheet" which they gave us also at the till included quite an amount of spelling mistakes and direct Dutch translations that made no sense. If the guides were "friendly" as well they would try to add-in the highlights in English, but they do not seem open to this at all.
Great tour in a large historic cave
Took the "train" ride through the mergelgrot. Fun experience, and it takes a good set of driving skills of the "train" driver. Fascinating to see the nuclear shelter.
Visited in December 2 years back. Very unique and beautiful Christmas market with lots of cute stalls. Unforgettable experience of Xmas in a cave!
Took more than 2 hours to get there, but it was nice, you should take the train tour instead walkingBeside it was a nice town to spend your weekend. The only difficult thing to me was no English, the tour guide spoke Dutch. But I understand, literally there were no foreign tourist, I was the only one. I think because its far from center, I loved it, no crowded people trying to take pictures etc. And The Netherlands is not just Amsterdam
#history #tourist #highlight We should always teach our kids about the world history. Walking under the ground, even underneath a graveyard, and hearing stories about the people who had to hide in complete dark during the second world war was impressive for all of us. The kids keep talking about how dark it was when the guide turned off the light for a few seconds. @yourdigitalsteps.com
Very nice experience. Guide had great sense of humor and enthusiasm which made the tour alot of fun
Its interesting history also the art work in the tunnel. Unfortunately theres no translation for English speakers, also if you do the train trip, theres no stop for fotos at all. If I do it again in future Ill definitely get the walking trip. Grab a jacket its could down there.
Beautiful Christmas market inside the caves. But like me, some may feel a bit claustrophobic after some time, like after an hour or so. But then I am not much of a shopping person. So if you are, you will enjoy the place and the atmosphere.
We drove 2,5 hours to see the Christmas market, it was such a disappointment, in addition to 7,5 euros entrance fee per person, thru charge 8 euros flat fee for parking, we spent 1 hour in the queue because we bought online tickets, people with no tickets for in within 15 minutes, very badly organized, the market is small, selling same things like in any other Dutch market, they say its stroller accessible, but it was very hard to walk around with a baby stroller with all the people moving in all directions. Definitely a rip off and much better to drive a bit further to see markets in Germany.
We been here during Christmas market, best decision ever. I only say that because prior to this visit, we been in Valkenburg and delayed visiting cave visit until Christmas time.15 Nov - 29 December, entry fee for adults 7.50EYou will be provided with a map of the cave, people with disability can get around easily, cafes and places to eat insideVery good organisation, helpful and nice staff, beautiful decoration, many Christmas 🌲 where you can hang your wishes, beautiful lightsThe stands contain a wide range of products, most of the them being really cheap. Not an usual ripoff Christmas market with expensive stuff. We found cremes, home made stuffs, little local gifts, all at decent price and high quality.
Amazing time during Advent. Wonderful Christmas market.
Whenever you visit the province of Limburg a visit to one of the caves is a must dos. The Gemeentegrot is a nice cave which you can visit either by train or by foot. The train ride is approximately 30 minutes and gives a nice overview of the highlights.
Wow! What can you say about these caves to do them justice?Completely mind blowing place, our tour guide ferry (sorry if thats spelt wrong ferrywas super friendly and charming. He gave us a seamless bi-lingual Dutch-English tour of a truly mesmerising piece of history. We live in Nottingham UK, which is famed for its own cave network but this is in another league.I wont give away the details but this is highly recommended.
It was ok, it didnt feel like a Christmas market, didnt like the fact that you have to pay to enter each of the caves. Can turn out to be an expensive day if youve travelled in from other areas by train.
Another fantastic cave in which you get lost if you go without a guide or step a bit too far in the dark. A labyrinth of mining tunnels filled with drawings made of charcoal. You are kindly asked to not touch them. Also some fantastic statues can be found there. This cave is accessible by feet or a little train on wheels. Worth a visit!
Really cool cave and sculptures. The Christmas miniatures were delightful but were mostly American.
A must visit with the Christmas markets! Special atmosphere and unique location. Too bad for the ticket to be paid, but its understandable, and inside there are actually some good deals!
The caves were beautiful and lived up to the hype. If you are going for the Christmas markets, get there before 10:00 AM. Our wait in line was less than 5 minutes, but at noon, the line was much longer. I imagine the wait would have been at least 20 minutes. Even so it would be worth it. A very unique experience.
Lovely christmas market in december. Very festive wondering around around the cave covered in fairy lights and christmas music. Very busy on weekends with a long wait.
Great tram tour filled with history and art! If youre into urban ruins, WW2, the atomic age, fallout shelters, urban art, catacombs...this is the tour for you. And the art installation, the "Cave Experience" at the end is the bomb, and you can stay for as long or as little as you like, just in case you are rushed for time. Be warned, its cold inside...AND even though they have a card machine, they only take cash, so make sure youre flush with Euros before you arrive.
Choose the walking tour over the train and enjoy the light and music show at the end.
We had hoped the sand sculptures would still be on . Dispite that we had a wonderful afternoon Service at the cafe was good .
The gemeente grot or in English the community cave is one of Valkenburgs many caves. During Christmas this cave turns into a beautiful Christmas market with lots of great market stands and decorations. When youre thirsty you can even go for a drink inside the cave. Its a unique experience
Pretty nice during the Christmas market. Lots of random stuff. But sadly a very boring and long line to get in. Could be improved by adding waiting music, drinks & pre-booking entering time slots
Very cool place. A must visit if you are into Christmas Markets!
Visited the Christmas Market in the Gemeentegrot this weekend. An amazing place for a market! There is a large number of market stalls, selling anything from Christmas decorations and handbags to homemade mustard and dutch cheese. All corridors are beautifully decorated with real Christmas trees and Christmas scenes, and as the caves provide shelter from the inclement Dutch weather this is an ideal place for a stroll through the market stalls and a pit stop for a drink in the cave cafe.
Nice building but theres close too early when I came. Maybe next time I can enter it
Nice to take a tour and see the art and stuff
