Armenia, Sevan
This scenic, medieval monastery in a canyon is partially carved out of the mountainside.
Lovely place, authentic, so much history
The upper room in this monastery is one of my favorite places in all of Armenia - you can feel the prayers of many years and the echos in the room, make it a beautiful place for worship and prayer and the reading of the Bible! We did not take a tour, but the tours were very cool and worthwhile. The views were beautiful and we saw some sheep being herded on the way out!
Must visit. Its different than traditional churches. Its carvedout from rocky mountain. Its someting similar to Buddhist Caves.
Wow! Just wow. It kind of feels like Indians Jones, when you enter the monastery. You really can feel the history of this place. But that being said it is very well preserved and looked after.Be sure to take your time while there as it is full of hidden spots and lookouts.
Nice to see the Monastery and learn about history of the monks.
The most outstanding church in Armenia we have visited out of many.Must see :)
Beautiful monastery, really spiritual place. Seems to be mostly original. The people are welcoming and I was lucky enough to be there during a service. Highly recommended!
Geghard Monastery, Kotayk, Armenia; partially carved out of the mountain, was founded in the 4th Century CE.
A must see on the same day of your Garni Temple trip. The monastery has areas which are carved out of the adjacent mountain. The complex was founded in the 4th century at the site of a spring inside a cave which is considered sacred. The spring exists inside of the monastery till this day. The monastery is surrounded by spectacular cliffs .
great..it digger inside the mountain and its taken 300 years to finish
The monastery is located in the mountains, not far from Garni and the Stone Symphony. A very ancient monastery, some of the temples are completely hollowed out inside the rocks. Other church are complex structures, consisting of both walled chambers and chambers carved deep into the cliff.
This old monastery carved from the rocks is full of history and is nestled in an untouched valley with a lot of nature around. The place is tranquil outside but dies get busy. Mornings are better for a visit as it tends to get busier later and hotter as well.
I came to the church (not insidebut to the garden or whatever you call it with my small dog. They didn’t let me stay there 😂 Armenia is so old fashioned. Get over with this hate towards animals. And you say you love Jesus… Jesus loved animals.
I decided to join the tour going in Grghard Monastery because in photos it was so beautiful. However, you can only get nice shots when you are using drone. I came here on July and it was too crowded because of tourists. I guess this place is nicer during the off season where tpurists are few and you get the time to take photos without photobombers.
Beautiful medieval monastery complex, partially carved out in the mountain rocks. Located in the stunning gorge of the Azat river. It is a must see place in Armenia.
Simply wow ! Amazed by this place. Vibe is magical. You can feel 1000 years of prayers.
Great UNESCO site not far from Yerevan. I was here in winter with Yerani Travel, and our guide just show us how wonderful acoustic is inside the cave. Very powerful place in the mountain, you can buy a candle in the small shop on the territory of the monastery and then put it in the monastery to comemmorate your family members. Its holy place after all.
Beautiful monastery at a very nice location. The road towards the monastery is a bit bumpy, but worth the trouble. The monastery was under construction when I went, but it was still very scenic. At the parking lot you have to pay 200AMD and you can buy some souvenirs (+ walnut bread - everyone sells this here).Go early if you want to avoid crowds and souvenir shops!
Incredible monasteries carved out of straight granite. Do come on the hot day, inside is always very cool
Went here on a day tour with Hyur Service and was happy I did so. Beautiful surroundings and gorgeous interior carvings in the church. VERY crowded but we went on a Saturday after all and it was a national holiday.
While you are visiting this monastery you can find the importance of lighting and usage of light as an unavoidable part of sending a visual message
Monastery carved into the mountain, not far from the temple of Garni (either a short taxi ride or a nice walk along the road if youre feeling brave and its not too hot outside). There wasnt much tourists when I visited (July 2019making it a peaceful escape from all the hustle and bustle back in Garni and Yerevan
Amazing temple at the end of a valley, old and with a sacred energy .. worth visiting if you are near
A medieval monastery and listed as one of UNESCO world heritage site. A very interesting historical place- founded by St. Gregory the Illuminator, then later on, plundered by the Arabs (920sand Mongols. Also destroyed ny earthquakes in 1127, 1679 and 1840 but rebuilt in the succeeding centuries.
It is good enogu to visit a day. It could be cold during a winter especially the monuments are located in the cave.
Visit this place!Even in december it is wonderful. Expect to pay some few hundred Drams for parking. Some of the caves were closed, but the main church is accessible, as is the yard.Driving there can be intense, because of misty weather.
Must visit place, we really loved it, while our visiting we saw one wedding also, don’t skip this place for your Armenia trip
The atmosphere of Geghard Monastery is simply overwhelming; the service, going on during my visit, in one of the churches, as well as the concert in another hall did just add to that experience - highly recommended.
Beautiful historical temple. It is like time travel, gives of an atmosphere that you havent experienced before. Even if you have an other religion or are an atheist it is a great place to visit.
This ancient monastery is very beautiful and well maintained, the interior gives us a nostalgic feeling, there is a small spring of water flowing from inside the monastery belived to be having curing capabilities and the scenic beauty in and around the monastery are a must see
While the main chapel was built in 1215, the monastery complex was founded in the 4th century by Gregory the Illuminator at the site of a sacred spring inside a cave. The monastery had thus been originally named Ayrivank, meaning "the Monastery of the Cave". The name commonly used for the monastery today, Geghard, or more fully Geghardavank, meaning "the Monastery of the Spear", originates from the spear which had wounded Jesus at the Crucifixion, allegedly brought to Armenia by Apostle Jude, called here Thaddeus, and stored amongst many other relics. Now it is displayed in the Echmiadzin treasury.
The best day exploring ever, missioned there after taking two marchutkas and a taxi for final stretch from Yerevan. We happened to witness some majestic singing by an all female choir in the rock chamber, acoustics were heavenly, truly remarkable
This excursion is usually combined with the Garni Temple. The church is unbelievable and the views are amazing. The church is tucked on a mountain. There are a few stalls around to buy fruit paste and gata.
Fantastic monastery built inside the solid rock. Unbelievable atmosphere, unique panoramic views
Beautiful location and buildings. Information available in different languages. Can get a little crowded.
Geghard Monastery is one of my favorite places in Armenia. The Location of the Monastery is very beautiful and magical between the green mountains and river.I recommend this place to everyone who wants to visit Armenia although Its not far from the city center. No entrance fees at all. But you can buy candles to light inside..
Geghard Monastery is easily one of the best gems of Armenia. We’ve been here three times in three different seasons and it just charms us each time. If you’re coming to Armenia, drop by. It’s just a little over an hour from Yerevan. Oh, and don’t forget to buy gata- it’s a delicious coffee cake that’s a specialty in this area.
Every time i take my tourists to Geghard monastery they feel blessed and peaceful ! This is definitely so impressive and everyones loves that. Not everywhere you can see a monastery carved inside a huge rock. Thats for what Geghard is famous for. And the surrounding nature is simply breathtaking.
Armenia is full of history .... it’s a paradise for the people like me, who love historical & cultural places ... ..This is A 12th Century Monastery Geghard ..... being partially carved out of the adjacent mountain & surrounded by cliffs. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site with enhanced protection status. A must to visit site. Thanks to our tour guide @gor_hoveyan for showing us this beautiful place. .
UNESCO world heritage site. Yet another beautifully nestled monastary in the Azat River gorge and an active church. It was such a sight to see this monastary appear out of no where while driving through the mountains and be transformed into middle ages sighting the challenge of little natural lights entering the chamber through many orifices. One look at this to understand how beautiful this monastary is, and Armenia is full of these monasteries.
Its a must visit site in Armenia. Its not very far from Yerevan. The Geghard monastery is a world heritage site and especially during the winter time it looks like a fairy styled architecture. One should visit this place for a sure.
Together with the Garni Temple, the Geghard Monastery forms one of the three UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Armenia 🇦🇲. Its a big complex of consisting of a monastery and a couple of churches. The beauty of the surroundings and the aura of this holy monastery are sure to make you fall for this place.
One of the major touris spots in Armenia. A big religious complex carved inside the mountain. Quite impressive and well preserved. Listed as UNESCO Heritage site. A must see for sure :)
The main road is blocked now due to the recent rock slide, but there is a small 4x4 accessible road (very adventurous and steep!through little villages that will take you to the monastery. The locals charge you AMD 10000 to show you the way (we bargained for AMD 8000, but it’s still way too much, try AMD 5000, should work). As a result there is pretty much no one in the monastery and it’s great as you can experience this amazing ancient spiritual place by yourself.
Breathtaking monastery surrounded by a beautiful view, you truly will enjoy your time there, there a historical facts about the place and so if your a tourist I recommend you bring a guide with you so you can learn as much possible historic facts about the place look at the photos below to understand the place truly, I really recommend you visiting there, an experience you will never forget.
Not too far from Yerevan. But theres no public transportation here. People come in tour groups. Or hired a taxi from Yerevan, like us. Wecombined the trip with Garni visit. The cave-like church is so extraordinary. We bought some nut-fruit snacks from the vendor outside the monastery complex and it was so yummy.
Geghard Monastery is very nice place, great views around, great acoustic inside, mountains… tourists of coursebut u have to visit it if u are in Armenia
This is a monastery almost carved out the side of the mountain.I got here by taxi along with Garnish temple and another monastery for 25000 total. By bus you go to garnish temple and either hitch or get a taxi. Its not too big so you can see everything in 30-45 minutes. Its pretty dark on inside so best views from outside.
A very pretty monastery. One of the intresting parts is just how old it is. It is a unique thought that many of the monks lived in caves surrounding the monastery.
One of the most powerful monasteries in Armenia. Must-see place in Armenia. It is always open so you can enjoy the place
