Off Watamu Road, Gede, Gede Watamu Rd, Kenya, Kilifi
Archaeological site featuring a walled city with mosques, a palace & several houses.
Nice place. There are guides from the local community available at the entrance.
The place is so nice but we as Drivers we are so Disappointed that we are not allowed to walk with our visitors/guest to the museum they are saying we need to pay and if this issues will not be resolved we will have to take our guest to other places not Gedi Ruins
It was a good experience, the tour guide Harry was just so friendly and knew his task well . The entire walk took 45minutes . Gedi ruins is a pre historic site with lots to learn from .
This is a very awesome place to visit for travellers with an interest of visiting attraction sites. It is with so much fun to learn the history behind its existence and also how things were conducted during that time when it was functional. The stories are very captivating. The service deliverers are very professional in delivering their services to their clients as they ensure customer satisfaction. It was with so much fun spending time in this historical site and also a very good place to learn about the past.
Amazing experience. We had a guide who was very knowledgeable and fun. Gede ruins is well managed and clean. The kipepeo project was a great addition. You can buy honey at kes 500 to support the local community. They have a bee keeping project that you can also learn about. Will definitely visit again
One the best sites that I visited in coastal line of Kenya
The history of the early Arab dominants of malindi is brought to life by the archaeological excavations done here. The guides are knowledgeable and experienced. I would suggest one to plan ahead and give this area enough time approximately 3 hours to enjoy what Gedi ruins has to offer.
Was an amazing visit to the ruins and museum. There are guides from the local community available at the entrance. Our guide Badi was very knowledgeable and entertaining. The history according to the locals was well explained, the architecture and how Africans lived and had before influences from other parts of the world. Some food for thought. The charge for locals is 100ksh and 50ksh for the kids. The charges for the local guides are specified but from past reviews seems the going rate is 1000ksh.Badi also arranged for a brief monkey show which was a fun experience. The monkeys sat on our shoulders and head as we fed them peanuts and took pictures . They were friendly (and heavymonkeys π. They have a butterfly and snake park also
The local guides who take you around give the Gede Ruins tour a personal touch and the well behaved monkeys who welcome you to the site make this a unique experience and the Giriama dancers are awesome.
Great histrionic place. I recommend to visit and be amazed by the civilization of Kenya. Also it is such a green space to enjoy nature.
The place is abandoned, but its spirit and resilience is still there...its walls talk not but do shout and echo its rich history...the crumbling ruins tell a story of a centralized, culturally rich and thriving civilisation that existed for years on end and the sad story behind its collapse...its a mirror image of what was to be, but never was, what was to become, but never came...the ruins are a prophesy of our fate if we lose the center and things fall apart.Such a great place to learn, reflect and experience first hand as mother nature reclaims what was once hers...Such a great place to visit... highly recommend π
Great experience! Loved the tour guide Tobias who led us through the history of the Ruins! It was an enlightening experienceπ
There are different places to see within the facility - the ruins, the snake park and the butterfly museum. You pay 100/- at the gate to access each, so for all, thats 300/-. They are shady with the details at the gate. They will give you a guide without information only to find that there is a 500/- hidden guide fee. Ask before you accept the guide. Most places are labelled so one is not necessary. We got one who was really offensive with his comments. But, other than the guide, the place is worth seeing. I would have given it 5-stars otherwise.
We were given the history of the place by a community guide Bokomo. Its great to see the ruins a 1000 year old still standing with the great homes of the time.
Such rich history and culture, apparently the 900 year old ruins used better technology in building compared to the buildings there constructed in the year 2000 .... I had to mention that.... it stood out.A guide is provided.... made it more enjoyable, but they require a separate tip, like two hundred bob.Tickets are 100 for the separate places, thats the kipepeo, ruins and snake park, then with the 200 bob tip damage is 500...Also come with bananas to feed the cute monkeys there....
Simply breathtaking for history lovers, the site leaves you with many questions of what could have happened to the inhabitants of the old city to desert such a great city that must have taken them years on top of years to build.
It was a fun day to experience all the history about Arabs, Portuguese, oromia, Chinese trade in the ancient years. All the history we learnt been seen in real life its something unique. We had the best tour guide who explained so well about the old city.
Only 30% of the escavation was done here by good old british archeologists. The reservation of nature is epic to maintain the home to the beautiful monkeys who would quicky jump to your shoulder especially if you have some bananas which are sold at 10 KES by locals outside the gate. The place encompasses three sites, the museum, ruins and a snake park costing 100 KES each for citizens. Rich history around the area and lessons about poisonous snakes around, leave your reptilia phobia at home.
Great place to learn about the history of swahili civilization! Please find sometime to catch up with the past.
We had a very good guide...though we didnt have much time to spend we enjoyed the history. From the ruins, snake Park and the butterfly House. It also perfect for pictures.
Beautiful place and a fascinating archeological site
A wonderful place to visit in watamu, the guides are very knowledge. You should check out the butterflies too.
Awesome archeological site in Watamu. The guides give you all the history of the ancient civilization. The ambiance is unmatched, the wildlife is vibrant and the air is so fresh.
Take a guide! They are really good and for 1000 you get an inspired person who tells you the history. Cute monkeys is a bonus.
Rich History of The Early Gede Town People.
Great historic site where sultan settled.
You have the 3 options to choose from. The ruins, snake park and butterfly Park. It takes about an hour. Guides are very informative and entertaining, especially with the trained monkeys.
Its a really interesting place, and quite haunting when you listen to the story of the ruins. A photo session at the entrance was quite interesting and awesome experience. There are different walks you can do in the ruins, We spent about 3hr or so here and walked around with one of the guides. This place is worth a visit rates are 500 KES entrance fee per person.
WAY AWESOME THAN I EXPECTED!So much history, amazing architecture, and oooh the monkeys are the friendliest ever!If you go, insist on a guide by the name HUDSON MKOKA!!! The best Ive ever met anywhere. He makes it seem like a casual conversation between friends on an adventure. Allows you to pause and marvel, enthusiastically answers any questions.I fear snakes but his guidemanship motivated me into the snake section. He made it a wholesome experience!
π Good location to explore. You can easily reach via TukTuk.You can take a tour with a local expert - just arrive and the rest will be managed directly on-site.Make sure to spend some time with the monkeys π at the entrance. Carry some shillings to buy peanuts π₯ to feed them.
You get to learn soo many interesting things about the people that used to live in the area!Would 100% recommend visiting this placeTheres also a butterfly project section where you get to see and learn about soo many different species of butterflies β€οΈβ€οΈπ¦π¦And a snake section, where there are soo many different types of snakes and you could actually hold them if you wanted! Not me though ππ cause reptiles freak me out!!!πππYou get soo much just from visiting one place
Go for the ruins and stay for the flora, fauna and scenery. Beautiful place and shame theres not more visitors to the centre. While there, if you dont mind, take along one of the tour guides and support the locals while at it
The whole site is incredible. We didnβt take a guide but we still liked to hike on our own around the place between the different archaeological sites. We also went to the snake museum which is at the same place. It isnβt really worth it except if you like to see snakes in very small and dark cages. There is also the nice butterfly museum where you can walk around the butterflies and try to recognize all the species.
Its definitely one of the most beautiful places Ive been,, i read much about it in history and gladly i got a chance to visit the place,, i loved it, its super amazing, you absolutely wanna go there, see the natural beauty of a place considered as ruinsπ―π―π―
The place has very interesting history. They have well updated historians who guided us through the city...... Will sure visit back since they were doing more excursion...... I wanna see what they have for us.
Most visit destination, use the local guids and spend something enjoying and learning about the history of old days rish and poor people. Lots of business deals have happened in the old days. The snak farm is must go, butterfly place is mainly business advertisement, wasnt worth it.
Gede ruins is historic. I would recommend you get a guide at the entrance who will walk you through the ruins. As you enter you will be greeted by very friendly monkeys. A good photo opportunity with them!As you tour the ruins, you will pass by the different houses and get to know why they were named so. You will get an appreciation of the work that archeologists can really achieve if they have resources. The process of unearthing the ruins takes time since it requires the use of a brush!A must visit if you happen to tour Malindi and its environs.
Established in the 12th century, the place is rich in history of the coast and Eastern Africa and its interaction with the outside world. There are various ruins such as a palace and a mosque with various artefacts. It also shows how stratified society was even back then. With people of various classes living in different walled sections.
Awesome awesome awesome. Was lucky to find Mr Kazungu, at the snake park, who is A very Educative guide , so knowledgeable and so hospitable in equal measures. Now, there are three parks, Hedi ruins, the snake park and the butterfly park. Rates are Ksh100/-(Children 50/-per person for Kenyans, Ksh 200/- (Children 100/-)For residents and Ksh 500/- for Mon Residents.
Had a great time. Learnt a lot about the place and history i didnt know about. Barnabas at the Snake museum was very informed and informative about his snake project.
I loved the whole experience, from playing with monkeys, to seeing the ruins and learning the history. The gallery is beautifully arranged with artifacts from the ruins. I also enjoyed the butterfly sanctuary, the beautiful plants complement the busy butterflies.
We had a great guide. Awesome history. The government can do more to maintain the museum and for the locals.
The Gede ruin site is a fantastic site for a quick afternoon trip solo or with your family. A great way to learn more about Swahili culture and to understand just how long this part of the world has been in touch with the world at large. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and answered any questions that we asked with ease. The site itself is very green with huge baobab and fig trees everywhere some of which are taking over the ruins themselves. Beautiful but it can be quite hot!
A quite interesting and historical place to visit. The guides are informative. However, the secret stars are the monkeys who are not shy and accompany you through the ruins.
Because Kenya is not only wildlife. Very interesting great tour by Rosy but does not get enough attention from the tourists. A must go.
Great place to connect with centuries of coastal history. The guides are generally good, apparently part of a community conservation group. official museum staff lethargic as expected. Great knowledge shared at the snake park and the Gedi ruins. Less to learn for adults at the butterfly place. They also sell pure honey at a very affordable price of 500/- per jar.
A must go place for history lovers and anthropologists. Located in Gede Town, easily accessible using public or private transport.
A very interesting historical site, I really enjoyed my time here. The guide was great and knew a lot, and it was amazing to walk through the remains of this old city. There are many monkeys around, if you have a banana you can feed them or even make them climb on your shoulder (they dont have claws). Many of the guides here speak Italian
Loved it. Took a boda from watamu (150 shillingsand hired the recommended guide. Hudson, my guide, was friendly and knowledgeable and was even game for taking a few pictures of me throughout the site. With 12kms excavated there was plenty to see and you get some sense of what the city was like. The deep wells, house with bathtub and palace courts were a real treat. The natural beauty of the site is also a pleasure with giant baobob among others found within the grounds. Hudson had recommended bringing along bananas to feed a monkeys which I had declined however even without bananas the monkeys were very friendly and one (Philipoeven sat on my shoulder, an unexpected highlight.I also did the snake park as it seems like a common attraction in the area. The enclosures are very bare bones and I would say the tortoise enclosure is generally inadequate considering the number of animals. So if you are are very sensitive to these things, it is a real borderline situation at best. The variety of snakes themselves was more than I expected with adders, vipers and cobras among the group. You can also handle a (non venomoussnake if you desire. There was a also a butterfly garden exhibit that is a further attraction (and another separate ticketwithin the site.If you have a less than perfect weather beach day (or even if you dont), the Gede site attractions are a great choice.
Very rich in Swahili history. The ruins have been pretty well maintained for the centuries its been there. Our guide Veronica was very well informed and friendly, the monkeys too were pretty cool too. Oh! and I held a python at the snake park ππ
