Spalenvorstadt, 4056 Basel, Switzerland, Mulhouse
This regal, 15th-century gateway is one of 3 remaining from the city's ancient walls.
Nothing happening Sunday
Construction was finished in 1400s, but the outer wall attached to it was destroyed in late 1800s. So the upper floors of the gate are no longer accessible. But once a year, on open gate day (first Saturday after summer holidaysyou can climb the wooden staircase to the upper floors.Very conveniently located bus and tram stop.
This gate house is neat to see; free.
The Spalentor is a former city gate of the city of Basel and corresponds to the former Spalenschwibbogen on the inner Basel city wall . It is one of the three city gates that still exist today and is a listed building . The Spalentor was Basels most elaborate city gate and is considered one of the most beautiful in Switzerland. The Spalentor consists of the 40.3 m high gate tower with a square floor plan and is flanked by two round towers which protrude into the moat. These are 28.15 m high, octagonal at the top and topped with battlements; the flat tent roofs that once supported it were destroyed in a storm in 1842.
I was very impressed by the Spalentor.

Very nice monument and then old streets around !
Of the three entrance gates of the Middle Ages that have survived to this day, I liked Spalentor the most. It is no coincidence that this gate is recognized as the most beautiful in Switzerland and a national monument. For many years, Basel lived under their protection. The history of the gate began with a large earthquake in 1356, when old Basel turned into a pile of ruins. After that, construction of new houses on the banks of the Rhine began. They were surrounded by a high wall and a moat. The protective walls were reinforced by 40 towers, six of which were gates, including Spalentor. By the end of the 19th century, they began to interfere with the rapidly growing city and ceased to perform their function. They were recognized as obsolete and demolished, leaving the three most beautiful towers. The walls of the tower are 2 meters thick, two lowered gratings are visible in the aisle. The height of the side round towers is 28 meters, and the central tower with a pyramidal roof is 40 meters. Right above the gate is the carved coat of arms of Basel, made of sandstone and surrounded by two lions. An old mailbox of 1844 has been preserved on the inside of the structure. It is still used for its intended purpose. On the inside of the gate does not look as spectacular as on the outside, there is a tram track next to them.
Looks good. A lot of wind on both sides, because the doors cannot be closed.
A piece of history of Basel .
Very well-preserved city gate from the 15th century. It looks very beautiful at both morning and night. The street close to it is nice too. It’s a must see if you are visiting Basel.

Not so interesting but worth to visit
Wow. Ancient gate !!
One of the 3 remaining city gates from 15th century. This one is still well preserved with beautiful roofing. Its another historical landmark that you should not miss.
The building itself is very cute but the square always has alot of traffic and the light signals are kinda slow
Love Basel 😍😍😍
Very interesting place
I like the castle in Spalentor. You can walk through, but not go on it.The tram and bus stop is nearby. With a tram 3 few stop to France.Near the Kannenfeldpark, what you should check it out if you have kids or just want to relax.

Amazing historical building richest testimony to a lot of the the mediaeval history on the city. Beautiful historical and expressive arty details all around.

Its perfect to watch it from the tram. But if you enjoy long walks in an medieval city you should include it to your walk.
BEAUTIFUL original city gates. Wonderful little shopping area. Especially the tiny post office general everything shop. The elderly couple are WONDERFUL. You must stop there.
Ancient city gate from 12. century with many details in very good condition.
Awesomely made and preserved. There are three such gates in Basel. These gates were supposed to be the entrance for the old city.

1.11.2018: beautiful historical scenes and i was lucky to join the festival street fair nearby the tower :)
Absolutely, the most beautiful part of Basel! Full of visible historical landmarks and quirky shops (like Johann Wanner Christmas shop), cafes and restaurants. Picture perfect!!
The spalentor is a citygate tower. It used to be part of a wall surrounding basel. You get a sense of awe when passing through. The streets leading to it are full with libraries and restaurants. Plenty of historical churches and squares nearby.
Supposed to be a three star Hotel, but seemed more like a 4 star. Could only imagine how nice a 5 star hotel in Basel is. Beautiful hotel and close to historical district. Amazing staff. Would recommend to anyone visiting Basel, Switzerland.
Just a monumental remanence of the medieval times, the building is walkable and restored as well as the clock. One can see it completely as fast as you can walk around it and thats it, there is no inside or anything else.
Very well preserved gate near the university. Easy to reach via line 3. This area is quaint and has a few small shops. Not touristy.
Its a pretty gate but still just a gate
A big historic city gate in Basel. Worth to see
For me the most impressive Portal in Basel.
A big gate, that is very old and historic. Lovely piece of architecture.
One of the surviving old gates to the city with its towers and an historic district (the Spalenvorstadtbehind it. Probably one of the most important architectural landmarks of Basel.
Nice tower within a lovely housing area and next to the botanical garden. During Xmas season all streets are beautifully decorated. Worth a stroll
Its a nice building from the outside and it attests great building skill. I would have loved to see the inside and climb it. Its a nice walk to the place, but if you cant go up, I think its not a must do in the city.
Albeit this is at the edge of the old town definitely worth the walk/tram ride here.
