Japanese garden on Jackson Park's Wooded Island featuring a waterfall & foot bridges.
Nice cultural park in the city.
It was pretty! Welcome lady was very nice too and forced us to receive an oral history of the park, but it was worth it. Very quaint.
Beautiful Japanese Garden in Jackson Park
Put on your favorite walking shoes and enjoy a nice and peaceful walk in the middle of city throughout the year. Also a great place to take beautiful pictures for your special occasion 📸
Beautiful place! ❤
Yeah it’s cool. I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here. The park just south of it seems sketchy however. I wouldn’t walk here at dark.
This is a great place for yoga, or to find a nice tree facing the beautiful lake to lean against as you enjoy a good book. If your a fan of fishing pack a lawn chair and bring your fishing gear and head towards the bridge. Or perhaps have a nice picnic under the pavilion. Or a inexpensive date for two, simple and cheap it can be a great way to try to get to know someone. From the breath taking scenery, to the beautiful walk down the path through nature. This place will remind you all over again why nature can be so relaxing!! The perfect place thats not easily spotted, and for that I love it!
So beautiful. There was even a greeter, who gave us food for the koi fish. Definitely a must visit when near MSI.
Nice and clean garden to relax and enjoy the view
So calm, peaceful and serene. Definitely for families and couples.
Noise level was too loud to be a true Japanese Garden but it was very beautiful to look at
Very peaceful, nice place to walk around with family or with ur life partner. If u are into nature well this is the best place to enjoy it. Opens at sunrise and closes at sunset
Nice place to take a break from the busy city. They dont have much seating in the park but there is plenty of walking space. The water feature here is neat as well.
Nice little Chicago gem. Peaceful and quiet in the middle of all the hustle and bustle. A little difficult to find- park at MSI or on S Cornell Dr. If we ever visit Chicago again, well come back.
I would have loved to see the park. It looks nice in the pics and the recent reviews are positive however the mapping service takes you to what looks like abandoned park/parking lot with grass a foot high, random men sitting in cars by themselves, trash everywhere. Got out an walked around a little but didnt feel safe. At one point found a bridge that you could look across the to the park, it looked nice, found another bridge that was fenced off and way over grown. We gave up after that. There must be another entrance/parking area that locals know about. Asked another woman and her child in the parking lot and they were as confused as us looking for the park. Maybe will try again next time in Chicago.
A quiet place to admire nature and the very well-groomed Japanese garden. Very serene, would definitely recommend as a place to wind down after a long visit to the Science and Industry museum.
Beautiful and serene getaway on an island in the middle of Jackson Park Lagoon. It’s an easy walk over from the MSI and kid-friendly. A bit on the smaller end as Japanese gardens go, but you can squeeze in some good photo-ops here. On the day I went, there were a couple taking wedding photos on the bridge.Parking seems convenient. Public transit serving the area has become a bit unreliable since COVID - I spent 30 minutes waiting for the 6 bus and it never came!
Lovely spot tucked away behind the Museum of Science and Industry. Lots of parking nearby. Highly recommended during the end of April/Beginning of May for cherry blossom season.
It’s a nice little escape and everything. Very beautiful and whatnot. But it loses a star because my dog isn’t allowed to walk through. He’s my family, come on! How do you think that makes him feel?
This garden has also been referred to as the Garden of the Phoenix or the Osaka Garden. This garden symbolizes the mutual respect and friendship that Japan and the United States initiated more than 120 years ago. In 1893, on Jackson Parks Wooded Island, the Japanese Government built the Ho-o-den [Phoenix Temple] as its pavilion for the Worlds Columbian Exposition.
I have been to this place many years ago. It doesnt get old going back. Very peaceful.I like how the bridge looks in pictures but not so much walking off of it. 😂 So be very careful when you get on the bridge and especially when walking off that cute little bridge.I like the sound of the water. I saw lots of fishies in the water. Too bad its a little murky. Before coming to this place, there was a bridge on the other side of that park but it was not open. I thought we could walk to this place from the park but it seemed like it had been closed for a while. Oh well. I just drove around to the other side and parked on a side street then walked to what used to be called Osaka Garden. The name "Garden of the Phoenix" just doesnt sit right with me. 🤔 I guess its one of those things that just sticks with you like how I still call the Sears Tower, the "Sears Tower"! 😂🤣 Ill always call this place, Osaka Garden. 😁😊
This place is so beautiful in the spring but very crowded too
This is a little quaint area perfect for relaxation and sneaking up on birds as they perch. There are usually at least one or two other people around here though they are reasonably quiet. This is a convenient location from the science museum and is very easy to approach.
Beautiful small Japanese garden on the Wooded Island in the lake in Jackson Park. Uncrowded, in part because it is a long walk from any of the parking lots. The docent at the entrance was very helpful and informative.
Great hidden respite. Go early when there arent lots of small children around. The resident adolescent egret was sweet to watch.
A peaceful respite from the bustling urban life. This well kept garden sits in the middle of an island near the MSI. Catch a glimpse of wildlife on your stroll.
The best entrance is from the 63rd Street east parking lot nearest to Cornell intersection. Otherwise, there is a long trail from the parking lot on Science (off LSDwhich takes you through the butterfly and flower conservatory. Its a beautiful trail. The garden is beautifully manicured and clean.
Hidden gem! Beautiful spot.If you bike , make sure to bring your lock. No bikes allowed in the garden.
A beautiful, peaceful and serene way to spend an hour or a day. The heron makes a wonderful and exciting addition to the scores of pads in the Lily pond. Watch your step on the very steeply arched bridge. Enjoy the tranquility of the waterfall and relax under the meditation-like structure that allows you a shaded reprieve on a very sunny day. The brushed steel structure, "SkyLanding, by Yoko Ono, greets you on the path into the garden. This is a hidden gem on the citys South side that doesnt get enough attention in my opinion. A great find for nature lovers and novices to visit over and over again.
Hidden gem located on the south side off of 63rd/Hayes. Garden of the Phoenix is in the park, its charming. We saw an owl in the trees and a crane in the pond!
This place is really beautiful and as soon as you step in, your soul will be filled with positive energy. I do not know to express myself... You just have to go and try it yourself and I can assure you that you will not regret it.Also, if you are lucky, you will also be able to see a few Herons eating fish!Well, what are you waiting for? Go before the Summer ends!
It was amazing just as I remembered from childhood I swore to myself for years that they tore it down but shes still here and beautiful as I remember from my younger youth! Will be back soon!
A pleasant relaxing environment to enjoy while checking out the flowers , birds and trees.
Easter Sunday was very busy at the Garden of the Phoenix. There were over 600 visitors to the site. It was a warm, sunny day and attracted many families. The cherry trees are not yet in bloom, but if this warm weather continues, we should be treated to a beautiful scene soon. However, the Garden of the Phoenix is beautiful all year, and there is always something different to see.
This is one of my favorite parks in Chicago. It’s a peaceful place to find a bit of quiet time in nature. It’s easy to find but pretty out of the way. Jackson Park is a fun historic site and Garden of the Phoenix is the best part.
Sooo lovely. Perfect spot as usual. The trees are a bit bare, but the traditional structure is still there during our winter months. This is the entrance to a lovely little garden that we enjoy very often.
Such a peaceful and calming experience ❤ Definitely worth visiting
This is a small Japanese-inspired garden within Jackson Park that is peaceful and tranquil. It has a pond with fishes and ducks, small waterfall, a foot bridge, shaded area and pebbled pathways. The area is clean, well-kept and ideal for meditation, picnic or simply chilling or walking. It is good for photography backdrop as Ive seen couples or families having their pictures taken here. A hidden gem south of downtown Chicago.
Secluded space surrounded literally by nature (its a little island! Some people have fished there, lots of easy space to have a pocket just for you or with a small group of friends/your lover. Even the ducks are chill, lol.
Adorable location for a picnic! Garden is well-tended to, very minimal trash (which is great). Most people appeared to approach the park very respectfully. Definitely a lot of people having their photos taken, out on walks, or with groups - very full of life.
Its a very beautiful park. Peaceful, calm, the area has a gentle atmosphere. Friendly ducks are also part of the experience.
This is park has seemingly been closed for years and years. Despite living in Chicago for 6 years, I hadn’t visited this park until recently. I believe the water levels are high and are probably wreaking havoc on the grounds. If you’re ever on the south side, this is a must visit.
Small hidden garden outside the Museum of Science and Industry. Great place for photos or a nice walk around the lagoon. Lovely little waterfall inside the garden.
Took a while to find. Followed Googles walking directions from Promontory Point. Unfortunately one point of the route was closed so had to find a detour around the museum. The route to the garden itself, according to Google, required walking on water abilities but we found a bridge that took us over the water to the garden. The garden itself is beautiful and we passed very few people inside. It is south of downtown Chicago and off the beaten trqck but worth a quick visit if you have time.
Amazing little spot tucked away in Jackson Park. A complete gym for the Chicago Park District. Amazing little waterfall, great places to sit and relax, and a lovely little play area just outside. Absolutely love this place!
Very serene traditional Japanese garden. Easy to explore in 20 min and quiet and beautiful to stay longer.
Garden of the Phoenix is a small Japanese garden established for the 1893(!Colombian Exposition held in Chicago. This park epitomizes all that is Japanese: Small yet ornate, isolated and serene. The garden resides on an island which is accessible with two bridges, one on the north and one on the south. No pets allowed, so leave Fido at home. If you want to enjoy this gem, parking is available south of the island off of E. Hayes Dr. (cost is about $2 per hour). Also, it is about a 15 minute walk from this garden to the Museum of Science and Industry. My wife and I was travelling from Milwaukee to Indianapolis. We made a special trip to find this garden. This is not going to be an attraction to a lot of people. This garden is much like a Bonsai tree: small but incredibility beautiful. If you appreciate a Bonsai, you will love this park.
A hidden gem located in Jackson park Behind the Museum of Science and Industry. A small Japanese Garden thats really beautiful and really well-kept.Its really peaceful and normally not crowded. Bring a picnic lunch and be sure to clean up after yourselves.Parking used to be free, but now you have to pay so be prepared.#CitiExperts @Localguides
This is THE BEST location in Chicago for all nature lovers. This park is a bit far from downtown (around 13kmbut is very well worth it.I was biking through lakeview trail with a Divvy bike and passed by this park. Only inconvenience is that you cannot take the bike in the park and there are no Divvy stations outside of it. However, there is a bike station for normal bikes to park but you need to have a lock. The location is very calm and relaxing. The park’s blend with the lake is superb. It’s design is far better than all parks in Chicago. It is a Japanese park. Once you step in all your worries are gone. I highly recommend this park. However one note: there are no sitting areas which makes it a bit annoying.
Super cool feeling when youre surrounded by the city and then BAM! Youre in the middle of a zen garden surrounded by water, sculptures, gardens and trees. This is one of these must stop locations to relax and catch your breath if the city takes a bit too much out of you for a day. Just walking silently and watching the Coy feed near the running waterfall was enough for me to breath a bit lighter upon the exit. Go, enjoy, its free and relaxing (Punny)
