Gammelstad Church Town - Tourist attraction in Lulea, Sweden
Beautiful place. Really worth to visit .
Beautiful place full of history and traditions. I was so happy to get there and get to know a little bit more about the Swedish culture.I was on a Saturday and there was a 2nd hand market. If you dont have a Swedish bank account you will have to pay in kash. There are no many good places to have lunch (just fast food a bit expensivebut we had a coffe and a delicios peace of cake in the old village, leaving the big church behind you. I recomend to get there.
Beautiful old church and lovely little town, a peaceful and contemplative experience
This was an amazing experience! My mom my sister and I came all of the way from Denver, CO and it was so profound how deep of a connection I felt to my Swedish roots while I was here.
Great place to visit especially the Church and outside centre. Enjoy the walk everywhere
If you are living around, worth to visit once.
Interesting! Attended an performance on the most beautiful organ in Gammelstad Church!
Very pretty and peaceful. Visited in winter so lots of snow making it very pretty. Would like to visit in summer when cafe, shop etc are open.
Town where the church is located is unique, has red cottages with white door and window.
Enjoyed walking the town.
Best weather, lots of fresh snow and a friendly person in the museum.
Very cute little houses
Been here both in summer and winterIt’s a beautiful place but I think it is more picturesque in the winter with the snow on the ground
One of the must visit places in Luleå. Though its located in northern luleå it is well connected by local transport.
Cute and silent place
Beautiful place with short daylight hours the suns position in the sky makes for brilliant photo opportunitiesNice to see so many families having warm drinks in the park and folk playing ice hockey in their back yard, tremendous attitude to nature and the outdoors
Very interesting hoistoric town. So much to see. Very helpful visitor centre
Calm, historical, rare church town !
Nice architecture and peaceful place.
Gammelstad Kyrkstad is a journey through time. The famers from long ago saved themselves time for their way to church by building houses around the church to stay the night there before making their way back to the farms.Beautiful world heritage and the biggest Kyrkstad in Sweden
Nice little down to visit. It has its unique vibe because of its quiet and has similar houses everywhere which is quite cool. Main church itself looks nice and has a really cool viking era roof on it which impressed me a lot.If you are nearby, then definitely go and visit this place. You can park your car or caravan easily just outside of the center area along side graveyard and take a short walk from there to see the houses and church.
Beautiful place with small houses for the people who used to go to church there
Nice place for day out.Sunny day will help.If possible go on Tuesday they have old way of baking bread.
very cosy old city, nice to see
beautiful quiet village in winter season with amazing views
Very much beaitiful church from 15th century. Photos are not allowed inside but still people were taking it inside. A good place to visit if you like visiting historical places.
Beautiful church surrounded by a charming village.
Definitely take a trip to gammelstad! The story behind it is fascinating and is told with love and enthusiasm by the locals. In winter it is quiet there and you can really enjoy the weather and the peace. Will definitely come again in the summer and look at the contrast between the seasons there!
Beautiful very old church in an interesting small village. The volunteer was happy to give us a short tour/info about the church. The wood carved alter is amazing.
Piece of Norwegian history, still used though not quite as originally intended. Went as part of a large tourist group which would spoil it for most other visitors, I would imagine. Avoid when cruise ships are in! Fascinating and well worth making the effort to get there. Local flea market happened to be on too. Not put on for the tourists but better than the average UK boot fair!
What a great historical place, classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site situated in Gammelstaden near the city of Luleå, SwedenThis was a traditional way of building a town around a church, Gammelstad Church Town s the best preserved example of such a type of town. People still live today in these buildings, when you walk around respect their privacy and make sure to go to the visitor centre to pickup a guide to what you can see.
Old church city. Cosy place and a very nice church. Great place to visit both in simmer and in vinter.
Really nice place with a lot of historical buildings and nice genuine swedish Cafes. Worth a detour. I myself went by bicycle from Luleå. Go by the river and you have a really butyful day.
If you were around and did not came here then you wasted your time and petrol to come to Sweden
Worth a visit, too bad most things are closed in January. Very friendly and helpful staff in the 2 shops that were open. Excellent starting point for a walk in the nearby forest (be sure to bring foot warmers and your warmest coat).
Definitely do if you have a few days in Luleà and are a history fan. The " open air museum" is a scattering of 40+ well preserved timber and stone buildings. Wed have liked to do the 40 Sek self guided walking tour, but everything in town is closed on Fridays, alas all of the buildings have delightful descriptions in English and Swedish so we didnt feel as though we missed out. The Church and Bell tower are stunning and streets kind of earily beautiful when empty.A taxi from Lulea C is approx 350SEK - 2 hour walk back into town is also beautiful once you hit the water.
Hammelstadt is really a beautiful village with a lot of interesting old buildings. I liked the church the most, was actually not open but they were cleaning and the back door was open. The priest allowed us in. Wandering between the old houses was really nice, some of them are still occupied.
The Open House is a must see. Friendly folks there show and explain the inside of that house. Be sure to visit Gammelstad360.se for more information and impressive interactive 360-views of Gammelstad and its buildings.
To be honest, I initially didn’t expect too much. If you take a walk through the town it’s nice but that’s about it (mostly felt like a village with a more than average concentration of red houses). But the guided tour made it an amazing experience. The concept of an only temporary inhabited church town with all it’s implications on the local society make this place absolute unique. It’s totally justified that this place became a world heritage site.
So peaceful and beautiful area.
Have been here a few times both at summer and winter, beautiful place on both seasons but quite deserted during winter. There are some shops in a few of the small houses but generally they are private and not open for visit. Lots of free parking available. There Is also little museum giving more information about this Unesco world heritage site.
Beautiful and so nice place
Visited in February with lots of snow everywhere; it really is picture perfect and very pretty. My only criticism is that the church wasnt open to have a look around. Never the less I would still recommend a visit to the village - Id love to come back and see it in late spring/summer.
Worth a visit. Possible to see everything only in a few hours time.
This place is not advertised enough but it is on the UNESCO world heritage list so it is not just my tires that thinks it is well worth a visit
Check open hours on weekends and holidays before showing up
This is a very interesting place to visit.
Great place to visit on your trip to Luleå. Interesting area with historical wooden houses, an astonishing church and some nice cafes and restaurants. There was even a huge open second hand sale event (loppisclose to the church.
Fantastic church town, as a world heritage site it is a place you must visit when visiting Luleå.
One of the few remaining church towns in Sweden. Take the recommended walk through the town for an informative signposted guide.
