Spanish Parade, Galway, H91 CX5P, Ireland, Ros Comain
Small displays of documents, photographs, memorabilia and medieval artefacts chronicling urban life.
Weve learned so many things about Irish culture and their links with the sea from the médiéval age until nowadays.
We went in to shelter from a sharp shower but stayed ages! It was really interesting!
Wonderful museum. Now I more fully understand "the troubles" and the brave Irish people wanting to be self governed, not occupied as they are now.
it needs more historical item but the museum is organised and clearly.
Many interesting historical and cultural exhibits in very well cared for and clean little museum. Entrance cost is free. If you enjoy history, this is certainly worth a visit.
Very modern and informative about Galway and Irish history. Fascinating displays.
Cool museum, very informative. There are some archaeological artifacts on the ground floor, and then a pretty detailed overview of Gaelic culture and the history of Irish independence on the first floor. Its also free, they just ask for a €5 donation if you can afford it.
Extremely interesting worth at least 2 to 3 hour stay, Galway from stone age to 20th century. Excellent.
Well maintained.. those who are interested to learn irish history, its a good place.
Nice museum in old town Galway. And the price is right (free). Learned a lot about Irish history - great presentation of material.
Moving. A deep and engaging journey through the history and culture of the people in Ireland. I highly recommend the visit to know better Galway and the Aran islands.
Learn the details of Irish historical moments, ancient customs, and tools used. Free of cost and takes about 30 to 45 minutes to walk through. Experience includes videos of rare footage, and up close views of displays.
Great artifacts on display ranging from early BC era to 20th century Irish historical events. Took less than 45 mins to cover all.
Nice museum with some interesting pieces. The only thing missing is directional arrows to tell you where to go next. Free is good
Very nice building, well organized. Contains a very small archeological section, geographical information, ocean information and a rich section about the 1916 rising
I didnt know much about Ireland or Galway at first but coming here was great for learning about the history/culture of the place.
Really nice submarine exhibition that my 3yr old loved. Aran Isles exhibition inspired us to get a boat over to explore.
I am mostly rating the last room about the sea fauna and the part about the Gaelic history. I must say I didnt spend much time in the other rooms as I already did plenty lf museum on the other subjects showed there.I really liked the 2 rooms Ive been to. Especially the one the sea fauna. Learned a lot about jellyfish and about sea exploration in Ireland.
It was a very nice experience . We have a little boy diagnosed with autism and it was was so good to find a little sensory room inside the museum. He was a bit unsettled and the sensory room helped a lot.
Wonderful museum that really connects you to the history of Galway and Ireland. A mix of historical artifacts and crafts a well as traditional art. The layout and displays are varied and creative, and there are videos, 3D maps, and an underwater submarine area that children and adults will find delightful. The delivery of information has purpose and imagination, and it makes learning about history absolutely fascinating.
Visited Galway City Museum on a sunny Wednesday afternoon with my son. We really enjoyed ourselves 🙂
A very nice smallish museum that is located in the heart of the city. A good way to spend a hour or more learning about the local history and while it is free they do ask for a 5 euro donation which in my opinion a fair value.
This is such a great and well put-together museum. I learned so much about the local history here. My favorite exhibit was the Irish War of Independence and Irish Civil War exhibit.
Great museum with interesting themes of the irish history! Its free so definitely worth a look!
I visited the museum this morning with my daughter. We spent approximately 2 hours there. It is a fairly small museum but there is plenty to see. I particularly enjoyed the exhibition on the Gaels and the Monument exhibition and the artworks. The museum is free to enter but they recommend a donation of €5. I would recommend a visit here to anyone visiting Galway.
This wonderful museum in the heart of Galway city near The Spannish arch is a must see.Only a voluntary donation will show you loads of artifacts and abundance of historic interests.Experience being in the debt of the ocean in a replica submarine along with videos of historic moments in time. This museum deserves its *****
A great place, really liked the museum. It is more of a history museum of Galway and has a lot on info about the past of Galway. My most favorite part is the the photo at the first floor which is a splitting image of the real world since 1500 and you can see the same view from there.
Easy to find, just in the heart of Galway city centre. Free entry, of course you can donate some money if you are willing to. They recommend to do 5 euros , which probably is a bit too expensive for the expositions there. Nothing much to see, took us around 20 mins to see everything. 3 floors , everything displayed very well. If you want to know something more about Galway and the Aran Islands, this place is a must. Recommended.
Nearby is a monument which claims that Columbus was in Galway in 1477, the evidence for that is inconclusive but Mediteranean ships (as he sailed ontraded with Ireland and passed by on route to Norway etc. To think that Columbus met people in Galway, who had sailed from the Americas is far-fetched in the very extreme!! Blarney as the Irish would say. But its a good yarn to suck in gullible American tourists!!
A really lovely museum - its small, but that doesnt detract from it at all. Theres a lot of thought put into the displays and it gives both a good overview broad Irish/atlantic history and more specifically local history. Kudos to the curators for a fantastic experience.
Very awesome City Museum in an exquisite playce directly next to the Spanish Arch with a wonderful view on the harbour bay. There is no entry fee which is very uncommen for me as a german. But of course you can donate as much as you want. I had a great experience walking throught the three stories and learnes a lot about Galway, galic and irish history. From the beginnings B.C. throught the middle ages to WW1 and the irish independence. Some exhibits to touch, some stations to watch and listen, in a very pleasant atmosphere and a good taste of presentation. Of course there was a lot to read if you had the endurance.Marius, Munic, Germany
Free. A bit more reading on the walls than artifacts, but they have great displays of the boats and clothing worn around here. I liked the area playing traditional aran music.
Bernice(sorry if I got the name wrong!was friendly and helpful with directing a poor lost soul in Galway. After arriving and trying to find our Airbnb, she directed us and provided us with wifi and a bathroom. To top it off, she even called our Host for us to communicate with them. Thank you for the help!
This was a super interesting and diverse museum. It covers the history of the region (including the islands), Irish independence and there is also an expo on the sea. I spent at least an hour and a half here, the information displayed is so rich and detailed. There is a small viewing deck on the last floor which is wonderful. I learned a lot and would recommend it to everyone that visits Galway.
Great informative museum - loads of information about Galway city, the Aran islands, and Irish history in general. Jam packed of detailed descriptions and all at no charge. Felt guilty for not leaving a donation but I only had 20 quid on me.
Galway City is lovely to visit. Full of interesting bars restaurant and coffee shops. As it is a university city it has a young population making the centre area and the latin quarter very lively and exciting. There are lovely shops to buy or browse also buskers singing and playing instruments adding to the atmosphere.
Ireland is full of museums and others may be bigger or flashier but the Galway City Museum is a great one.We spent a really informative morning - I particularly liked the presentations on the boat construction and on the saving of the Gael. Just the right amount to absorb in a single visit.
A perfect sized museum - spend an hour and learn about the Irish people. The photographs bring the past to light. Kudos to the curators who put together a story with just the right amount of objects and images.
Met there with staff of the museum and had a wonderful time discussing everything that was happening coming up. Good job well done to the staff of Galway City Museum.
Its ok for a free museum. More of an atlantic/history museum. We went through it quickly but the view from the museum on a gorgeous day is beautiful.
Visited last week as a tourist. Great place to learn about Irish history.Make sure to reserve ahead of time.
Lovely little museum right beside the harbour and next to Spanish Arch. Lots to see and interesting for all ages.
A museum that’s modern, informative and celebrates the culture and history of Galway and the rest of Ireland. It’s free to enter and is a good place to see. There’s quite a lot on display here ranging from samples dating from Ireland’s ancient past to materials dating to the last century. Absolutely brilliant!
Great museum! Very informative and modern. One can learn a lot about Galway there. Follows all the government guidelines against Covid.
Beautiful, interesting museum. Only the ground floor was open when we visited during the pandemic. But is was a great way to spend an hour and learn about the Aran Islands and snippets of Galways history. Lovely interior design.
Very interesting museum to look at Irish history and well worth a visit if you are in Galway. Entry is completely free.
I really enjoyed my visit to the museum. For such a small city this museum had plenty of interest. Loads to keep the kids entertained with interactive media etc. Good section on the Easter Rising for local history
Such an amazing informative museum, lovely friendly staff at the reception desk , great viewing platform , they will also store jackets suitcases or big bags for free at help desk , well worth a visit takes about 20mins to get around the museum but can take longer if you stop and read all details about the artifacts and artwork , very child friendly is well as children can interact with and play with parts of the exhibitions
The staff here were wonderful, really nice and helpful. The museum was great, everything was clean and displayed very well. It is also very child orientated, with lost of interactive things for them to play with including a playstation, iPad and other touch screens around the museum.
A wonderful little museum with a fantastic restaurant in it.Walking around the museum gives a little taste of so much of the region. From the Galway Hooker boat that is inside, to Iron Age tools and arrowheads, to even older items this museum has a fantastic dose of history. Then upstairs there is moving exhibits, as well as collections of art, and poster and movie paraphernalia from times past.Cap it all off with a lovely view of the Quay from the corner window, and you have yourself a lovely little day at the museum!
