This educational center allows visitors to tour a WWII submarine & a WWII destroyer.
I cannot recommend this highly enough! A well maintained museum of two important vessels in our history. A submarine and a warship.Very respectful visitors, thoughtfully walking through.Informational signs help me understand what the parts of the vessels were. It helped me understand a bit of what our sailors went through, defending the United States of America during war times. The artifacts were well presented, and well lit. We were able to walk through the entire sub, which involved going through little oval doors. The ship had a lot of stairs and I imagined our sailors literally running up and down them during their days. The technology was explained thoroughly. Wow, what advances have been made since then!Thank you to ALL the volunteers who selflessly work on these vessels, you are preserving history.
The museum is a self tour walk-through for $9/person. It was very informative, and we even had a docent that awaited our arrival to speak more about the ships. He even walked us through the entire submarine telling us about the details we were interested in. VERY informative! If youre having problems with knees or weight though, you may want to reconsider this tour. I have both to be honest. The ladders were extremely steep and narrow. I navigated alright still, but I took my time. My utmost of gratitude for all those who have served in the armed forces... Thank you!
If youre a WWll buff youll love this, if not youll still think its pretty cool.Great visit to see the submarine USS Cavalla and the destroyer USS Stewart and learn about their role in WWll.Lovely morning spent exploring them. We stayed about 90 minutes but its self guided so take as long as you like. It was $13pp and $6 to park which was more than reasonable. If youre in the area make sure to stop by.
Awesome place to explore. We did not get to explore inside the ship due to electrical issues but was still allowed to go on it. Access is also allowed inside the submarine which was awesome.
This was a great opportunity to experience history and to walk around inside the USS Cavalla Submarine & the USS Stewart Destroyer Escort.
Awesome to tour the submarine and ship. It was not crowded when we went and was able to really take our time in the self guided tour. We will gladly purchase tickets to visit every time we go to Galveston to ensure this exhibit stays for many more generations to experience. The lady selling tickets was absolutely pleasant also. All the visitors were nice. Just a great place to visit
This was a very enjoyable self guided tour, with lots to take in and read. All the proceeds go to the upkeep of the park. They keep it very clean, well maintained and everyone is nice. You see lots of fishing out on the park. We will return
As an inpatient hospital Nurse for 16 years, it was a bummer to not be considered a “first responder” for the entrance discount. $13 entrance fee is reasonable though. Both the naval ship and submarine are amazing and have soooo much history. I just hope they can soon get their well deserved restoration and some basic maintenance since they are breaking down quite a bit. So much history and I hope to come back to see them again ! Come with sun block, you can have your picnic here and do some fishing. It is a beautiful park
Amazing experience, we got to learn a lot about history. Its worth checking it out. We got to see a submarine for from inside. There are many artifacts from the war. My daughter got to learn a lot. It was fascinate to learn that the ship was built in 7 days. There are more facts that you will get to learn.Make sure to check the weather before going to the museum because if its lightning they will shut down due to safety reasons so make sure its not going to thunder or lightning. The park is also good make sure to carry your food because you will find nothing there is no food. The place is very serene and you will enjoy the wind. If you are a fishing enthusiast then you will enjoy the pier.
It was literally a historic day. Not only was Naval Museum great but being able to witness history seeing the Battleship Texas come in for drydock and the repairs was an amazing day. The park is family friendly and a wonderful place to visit. Has 🚻 that are clean and accessable. Thank You for serving the community. We will definitely be back.
Self guided. Just the sub and the escort ship. Would not recommend the sub carrying a toddler. Tight quarters, obviously since there is a submarine.
The Naval Museum was a great experience. We got to enjoy some of of countries history. The tight spaces our navy had to endure was in real we couldn’t believe how they could have moved around is such tight spaces
It was cool to see an old naval submarine. Its a self-guided tour inside the submarine and destroyer. Some areas of the destroyer were closed off due to construction but overall it was a nice tour.
It was a cool experience overall seeing and getting to go more places than I would have expected normally
My family (husband, four grandchildren, and myselfloved the Galveston Naval Museum. We visited on a scorching hot day, so we were a bit uncomfortable. However, it was worth the sweaty clothes! The museum offers an amazing window into our naval history. The submarine and warship are interesting! Veterans pay $7 for admission. The parking lot is clean, and the grounds are beautifully maintained. Recommended!
Went for a family weekend getaway. Loved learning historical facts and seeing a part of naval history.
The submarine and destroyer are both super cool to walk through and all the employees are very nice with lots of extra info about the park and vessels.Awesome half day trip with my kids!
Active military is free. Parking is $6. Not suitable for wheelchair or people with limited mobility. My respect to those serving or sacrificed their lives for our freedom!
Take a self guided tour through the ship and submarine. Submarine has some tight spots for a big person. Tour the whole submarine. Torpedo rooms, engine room, barracks and everything else.
Very cool! You get to go in the sub and the battleship. Extremely cool for me because my grandfather actually had Thanksgiving dinner on tgive me dinner on this exact same kind of subs back in the 50s as a guest as he was a Navy Dr and if had not retired was going to be made a 2 star Admiral. Getting to go inside this submarine he told me about it several occasions was very special.
My boyfriend and I went on memorial day when entry was free from like 9am - 11am. It was such a cool thing to explore the navy ships all levels. Beware theres no A/C in the navy ships only a few fans that blow here and there so you will be sweating a lot. Plus they are cramped quarters with steep steps so if you wont do well with small tight spaces I wouldnt recommend it. It was an amazing experienced and so glad we went.
This was a great place for the family. We are not a museum family when we travel but this was an exception and we will definitely go again. We really got the feel for a submarine life and ship life. The only down side is that the door walk ways are not meant for overweight people it was a tight squeeze. Bring water because not all parts of the ships have AC.it’s also not handicap accessible due to all the stairs. The stairs are very steep as well. Other than that it was a great experience.
A must see when in Galveston! We attended the Memorial Day services here while in town on vacation. The 2 vessels are a great experience. Finally was able to tour a real WWII Era submarine. The staff is great and this museum is avery important part of preserving history and honoring veterans that both survived and were KIA or MIA.
Really nice, fun, and simple historical/educational activity for all ages. Went on Memorial Day and they had free admission and a special presentation.
Great way to explore a naval ship and submarine. Steps on both are fairly steep. It made our young children nervous to go up and down them.
So awesome will definitely do this again. Worth using Groupon for admission.
If you love history, or just love a good museum, this place has you covered. I mean the submarine was the one that sank the carrier that attacked Pearl Harbor. Be sure to note that the submarine is tight. And you have to go through some tight spaces.
Absolutely awesome place to visit! I loved touring the submarine and the destroyer escort!
My husband is a Navy man & he really enjoyed this museum. Lots of memories for him & lots of interesting stories for me. Definitely my only time in a submarine. Tight quarters for sure.
Awesome place, my kids really enjoyed exploring the sun and ship and they do a great job keeping them maintained. Self tours, so you can spend as much or as little time marveling at the amazing equipment.
Very neat museum to visit. Lots of history to see. Staff was very friendly. Not overcrowded but plenty of people there. You take your own self guided tour. This is a must stop if you are in the area. Not super expensive to get in either which is nice.
Real eye opener to see how they lived on the destroyer. Great that they are able to keep this part of history. Excellent staff and location for watching modern shipping.
Very clean, well posted information. We always enjoy visiting naval and boat museums and this is definitely a good one to add to your list of museums to see. Staff were very helpful and friendly.
We enjoyed it very much. Enjoyable for the whole family. Nice area theres a park. Cost for parking. I think it was $6.
Its a fun place to go with kids. Away from the rest of Galveston on Pelican Island near Texas A&M campus. Pack a lunch. You can watch the ferries go by, fishing, and enjoy your day. It is $6 to park, but worth it to me because the area is clean. If you go into the naval museum where the submarines are its fun too. My son is 15 and we always enjoy ourselves walking around the submaries. Kids under 10 will get a kick out of it. Bathrooms are clean too. Vets are $7 with i.d, active military free with i.d, kids 0-5 are free, kids 5-11 $8, seniors 65+ $10, and adults are $13. People are around if you want to ask questions. Be careful lots of stooping thru doorways and walking up and down stairs too. But its enjoyable day.
Extremely unique pieces of history on site! Nearly everything inside and out were accessible and it was all free roam. Visitors were allowed to climb onto the exhibits, enter through countless doors, take photographs, and view at their own pace. I would definitely recommend making the trip to this museum for new experiences!
It was nice Museum to visit! Beside learning & explore about the ships. The view is pretty good! That time we visit is windy but it was perfect for us to experience the beauty of this place. Dont forget to check this place when you visit Galveston.
Unforgettable and emotional experience. Highly recommend it! Its vital we all realize the sacrifices made by countless brave soldiers and their families, so we can sleep peacefully in our warm safe homes. Dont ever take that for granted or scorn at the hefty price paid. And dont dare turn away from helping them. And saluting and thanking them for their service. Would you not thank the fire fighter that rescued you from a burning building if you had the chance? Its not one person, its an Army of them, so be thankful for the blessings to continue receiving them.Sorry. I get bent out of shape when it comes to the Military and our brave soldiers. Enough!
Wonderful experience. A little pricey but very interesting, especially if you have family visiting who may have served in the military. Youre free to explore both WWII era ships. Catching a tour with a docent is a great idea as well.
Highly recommend. Friendly staff and We had a great time wandering around and enjoyed learning the history about everything there and being able to go at our own pace.
We were able to walk through a Destroyer Escort and Submarine. Both were well documented. It is a bit out of the way but worth it. Plus the park around it was a nice place to watch ships and birds. Fishing is also an option.
Really cool submarine and one of a kind destroyer here. Worth the visit, bring extra cash to pay for parking.
Lovely museum. A must go. Only one ship and a submarine but worth the visit with a rich history and view to share.
Love visiting the destroyer (DE-238and submarine (SSK-244built for WWII. The submarine was basically the iPhone of its era: minimalistic on the outside, complicated in the inside, fully functional as intended, and good at what it does. The mechanical designs should remind people how far our technology has progressed in the past century. Its easier to appreciate what is new when we can see and touch what was old (but nonetheless brilliant).
If you have an afternoon and you want to explore US naval history from WWII, I highly recommend taking a look at these museum ships! The sub is in excellent restored condition, with the destroyer under restoration currently. Both are relatively easy to walk through during your self guided tour, and both offer a ton of information on the signs located around the ships.
My family enjoyed this place. It was very interesting. Just an FYI it does involve lots of steep stairs and narrow pathways. A person who had mobility problems would find this very difficult to go through. I also wish there were more signs in the sub explaining what different things were used for. There are some, just not enough I guess. Other than that it was definitely worth the entrance fee.
This was a great stop on our trip to Galveston. So much history. The submarine was also great, much bigger than others Ive been in. Self guided tour was nice, staff was very nice, and helpful, also free entry for military, and a Groupon made it very affordable for my family of 8.
This is one of the best world war two submarine memorials in the country. Make sure to visit the submarine memorial plaza. Many of the photos are of the submarine memorial plaza at Seawolf park. Even though there is a museum ship and submarines here it is not about these ships, it is about the fifty two world war two submarine crews that are still on patrol.
Not much to do besides walking the boardwalk. People fishing and there is a small playground on the other end of the park. All my kiddos appreciated this visit. Its self guided. They also have a submarine that you can walk through. I didnt go in but everyone said it was nice and cool in there and that its a tight squeeze.
My grand nephew and I came over from Louisiana to hangout and explore a bit. Its a ship and not really built for those of us with mobility problems but kept up as good as I could then just set him loose on upper decks. Think he enjoyed both the sub and destroyer. He just couldnt get over the sleep quarters especially over the torpedoes in sub.
