St. Margarets House Settlement, 21 Old Ford Road, London E2 9PL, Subaykhān
Bustling charity-driven vegetarian and vegan spot hosting art exhibitions and events.
Great little vegetarian/vegan café that we discovered on our last day in london. Friendly (and hardworking!staff, good coffee and great vegan sausage sandwiches .. get there early if you want the vegan full english breakfast though!
Ive been here twice. Once was great. Once awful and thats stuck with me hence the two stars. I went with two non vegans to try and show them you can have a great vegan breki and that plan flopped. The woman on the till told us shed only had 1hr sleep and made the most disgusting undrinkable chai late which I had to take back, and I never do that! She said oh this keeps happening 🤦♀️. Also the tempeh sausages were absolutely disgusting. I felt like I was a vegan from the 90s forcing myself to eat horrible food because theres no other option. Also the pastry tasted stale. And all that for 15 quid. Put me off going here again which is a shame because I really loved it the first time.
Tasty food, all vegan, fair portions. It was raining so the outside sitting area was not available, and it was quite stuffy inside. Not wheelchair accessible as there are some stairs at the entrance. The food is tastier than it looks.
One of my favourite cafes in London. Unpretentious and always delicious food and nice staff.
It was a real treat to find this vegan cafe on my journey. Delicious pancakes, friendly and kind staff and a nice chilled Vibe. They have a great selection of cakes, sandwiches and pastries too. Would recommend a visit.
I dont get the deal with the full English breakfast. Ive had it twice and found it bland. The coffee and cake is great.
This is such a great vegan spot, perfect for a brunch with outdoor and indoor seating, prices are reasonable and the service is fast! I cant wait to go back and have the pancakes
Reliable place for vegan coffee and lunch - its been here for years and continues to be welcoming and delicious. It has a community feel and is very embedded in the local landscape, linked to St Margarets house which is worth researching if you live nearby. The garden out back is lovely if its warm enough to sit outside. You can help yourself to tap water from the little faucet by the bar. Most recently (Sep 2022I had Mac and cheese with focaccia garlic bread and a little salad - really great value at about £7.50.
Good vegan food here. The pancakes are really really good at this location. Also they make a really awesome Americano. Dont forget to pick up a chocolate chip cookie to go. Very quiet peaceful location.
Amazing! Friendly staff, REALLY good black coffee, delicious sausage focaccia and a fair price. The place has superb vibes.
second time at this place, amazing brunch! highlights were the crispy potatoes & tempeh in the english breakfast. i’d love to know how they do it! nice garden and reasonably priced
Unfortunately I wouldnt recommend this place. Waited over an hour for food after waiting in a queue for about 20 mins to even order. Its all a bit too disorganised. In addition its pretty much just catering for the gentrifiers of Bethnal Green. The food when we finally got to eat it was okay.
Lovely place with a nice big garden.Dont know if its always like that, but should have more than one person at the counter—I feel for the barista who was on during my visit. A single person taking orders and making them one by one forms a long queue in a short time, and its awkward holding up the line just by getting your drinks.
Gallery Cafe is a splendid place! Good food and great coffee! I love how many different pastries they have! I dread speaking with the people in the front as they appear to lack customer service skills.Pictured below: vegan chocolate croissant and Americano!
Enjoyed perfectly good Avocado Focaccia Im very pleasant surroundings. Ample inside and outside but very disappointed the vegan full English breakfast pictured on website was not available
Not the best espresso coffee if you are a real coffee lover, slightly pricey for the quality, overall nice place with big garden and very welcoming. Will go again however would love staff to learn making a proper short espresso!
I used to love coming for brunch before the pandemic, and hadnt been back to eat since. Its such a great place to spend time on a sunny morning, the back garden is gorgeous and the coffee very nice. Just a heads up that the online menu is apparently not up to date (theyre not doing pancakes anymore it seemsand a few things were not available. Overall, the food offer was less exciting than it used to be, but it makes sense that things change! Would still recommend for a drink and a piece of cake.
Don’t get into London as a couple often, so we always research for the best vegan food before committing to travel and eat. Several websites had this café as ‘number 2’ on their list of best places for a vegan breakfast. It had mixed reviews and there’s always idiots who post, so thought we’d give it a chance, so here goes ….‘Full English Breakfast’ - It looked good! The mushroom, tomato and toast were nice. I can accept a shop bought processed sausage as they’re really difficult to make, but a Linda McCartney sausage??? They’re so bready, dry and dated you’d think the big GC would upgrade, especially when it costs a tenner? The beans were pretty bland, the potatoes also bland and the kale was mushy. What really disappointed us was the scrambled tofu - it was tasteless and the carrot didn’t add (could have been blanched as far as we could tell as it provide zero flavour). I finished it, so it wasn’t a disaster, but very ‘bland’ overall.‘????’ - It looked good too - bags of colour but completely unbalanced. The toasted ciabatta was nice as was the cucumber ‘dip’ in the middle. The beetroot hummus was delicious as was the roasted veg and jackfruit in the middle, but the rest was odd. She loves anything pickled but the red cabbage was even too much for her. The falafel cakes were hard and having being warmed up, they were dry and pretty unpalatable to both of us. If you didn’t know better, you’d have believed they’d thrown whatever they had left onto a plate to fill it. Overall, there were some delights in this rather eclectic plate of food but it was confusing, lost and went unfinished.‘Dirty Chai’ - Wowwee. What a difference a shot of espresso makes. Even if you don’t like coffee, try it - it just adds a twist. We’ll done you - my new fave treat.‘Juices’ - Amazing. The green one with apple, spinach, ginger, lemon and cucumber was uplifting. The pineapple orange and carrot a great breakfast drink.Sitting in the back garden on a sunny Sunday morning gave the place a relaxed, sedate, get away from it all feel, but neither this, the amazing dirty chai or wonderful juices could make up for the mediocre (at bestbreakfasts.Sadly, with so much choice, we’ll not be back and won’t recommend.Sorry 😞
Absolutely lovely! Amazing ambience, warm food, friendly staff and good prices. The full English breakfast is very very good here.
Nice place, very friendly and competent service. You can sit in the garden and enjoy your vegan food there. To be recommended is the granola, fresh fruits, cereals, delicious.
Best Chai Latte i have had maybe forever. Sausage roll was exquisit. Im far from being vegan and I had another 2 because they are just so yum. Service wasn’t the greatest but good enough. And the atmosphere inside and outside was lovely!
Place smelt nice and looked clean to eat, however staff were rude, stood at the counter for a min whilst they gossiped with someone they knew. Didn’t even look up to acknowledge me. So I left. Shame that all these vegan places seem to employ the same types.
Delicious Vegan food. Weve been coming here for 20 years!
Had a full English breakfast and a coffee. It was so tasty and balanced , a great start of a relaxing Sunday 🌞 💫💕
Great spot for vegan lunch, I had the club sandwich and it was super yummy .I liked the conservatory seating area as it very bright. Will be back for more and can certainly recommend it.
Absolutely wonderful coffee, even though rather pricey I can disregard that because the taste is pretty good. I have been going to this cafe for a while now and I cant help but notice the staff and rather unfriendly. With quite a sweet interior I wouldnt mind sitting in sometimes but with their sour attitude Id rather not. No smiles, no hello, just an overall quite unwelcoming attitude. On two occasions now, staff have got my order wrong (which is ok everybody makes mistakesbut rather than an apology and a smile it seemed like I was inconveniencing them and it was my fault that they misheard! Wont be returning anytime soon!
Let me just say that today visit and quick fix food turned out to be quite epic for 2 reasons.1. SIMONE SIMONE SIMONEEEEE!!! pr. SIMONAE Italian male name for The Gallery Manager who exponentially really really cheered me up. His energy alone is food for the Soul. I was feeling blu today so for the next point, lets just say Sunshine on a Plate!2. COCONUT GREEN BEANS COCONUT WAS JUSY DELICIOUS and Perfectly balanced in taste texture, savoury and sweet and with the right amount of Heat chilly good
Nice stuff and a well range of choices, and all vegan! I had a turmeric latte which was very nice. As being in a old house and a gallery the bar looks unfurnished and cold, but during the summer you have a fantastic view of the garden and you can eat/drink in the garden as well. Ill try the breakfast for sure one day!
The special day was delicious, the cakes I would never guess were vegan. The food service was a bit slow but worth the wait. The back garden is beautiful.
Really welcoming fully vegan cafe and warm place with good vegan selection, teas, coffee and alcohol. Good little back garden for when the weather is right. The food is really tasty, presented well and comes fairly quick! Would like a slightly bigger portion but other wise delicious.
Found this GREAT cafe just by luck really, I needed somewhere that was both vegan and gluten free, really liked the atmosphere of the place, friendly staff, decent prices and sounds like they do a range of different wellbeing classes as part of the organisation including acupuncture. I had GF pancakes with mixed fruit compot snd coconut yogurt, soo nice!!
Ambiance is ok. Service speed was ok but not friendly enough. No one asked how the food was or if we needed anything else. Food looks lovely presented as you can see in the photo. It’s delish. Menu is limited option for brunch. Overall, good value for money.
Great breakfast, although be prepared for a small menu (3-4 items). The garden in the back is the perfect place to enjoy your meal on a nice day. Their pancakes are amazing!
Pretty good breakfast burrito. The fluffy pancakes were very good. Nice coffee and outdoor seating area at the back. Worth a visit on a nice day.
Last time I had the english breakfast, which was very nice - more importantly I was stunned by the pastries - all vegan! All amazing... I gained so much weight because of this place - but I will forgive you :this time I wanted to get some pastries but I ordered seitan and chips, amazing taste! Amazing flavor, and the mayo was also perfect. Stuff was nice, place looks cute and relaxing. Will come again!
a lovely vegan cafe just around the corner from bethnal green station and the childhood museum. i had the burger and my god it was good. service was also very very quick and staff welcoming. i’ll definitely be returning soon as the prices are also reasonable
It’s a nice place to have a tea or coffee. They normally have a tasteful music going on on the background. Their breakfast selection it’s not great, and sometimes the kitchen staff overcook the ingredients. There are normally lots of fellas working behind the screen of their laptops in this café, very hipster lifestyle.
This wonderful place was just around the corner of our Airbnb and we are so glad we found it! It was a perfect, sunny Saturday to sit in the charming garden and enjoy genuinely good vegan food!
Very good breakfasts. My none vegan wife was also very impressed. Tasty and good value too. Lovely little place, will definitely be back.
100% plant based café, with lovely service, and delicious food and drinks. Their selection is what vegans dream of. Food changes according to the best available ingredients at any given time.
This is my favourite breakfast place if Im in London. During the summer you can find a perfect spot in front of the cafe or in the backyard. The most important 5-star motivation is the food. The food (veganis awesome. Also my not vegetarian-friend was impressed and satisfied. Also as the most importent start of the day is coffee. The coffee is perfect and there are also vegan cappuccinos and flat white coffees for the special coffee lovers. The staff is also very helpful and friendly and love and you can find some (localart at this cafe. Just an awesome place I hope to visit soon again. Cheers
Super little vegan cafe. The falafel wrap was served hot and had plenty of filing. The foccaccia sandwich with avocado and olives was sizeable and good value for around £4. The cafe also offers a number of cakes - the walnut and banana one was particularly good.Great for a sunny day as there is plenty of outdoor seating at the front and back of the cafe.If you want to come for brunch, make sure to come early and definitely well before 12. Note the cafe only accepts cards.
Amazing vegan food. Just come and try for yourself, you wont regret it! Ideal for a great brunch with friends. Try the vegan English breakfast if you get a chance, make sure not to come too late as its so popular that it might be sold out shortly before brunch hours end...
The Gallery Cafe is one of those rare oases in the city. Its garden is quite large with a nice lawn and beautiful trees. The food served is delicious. Some of my friends didnt like the sausages in the full English breakfast because they were too close to those minced meat sausages they didnt like when they still ate meat. I devoured them :-)
Great vegan full (and fillingEnglish with homemade beans, herby sausages, good bread and tasty scrambled tofu! Only downsides: did have to wait around 40 mins for it to come (nursing nice coffees so all good), tofu was a bit cold (rest was piping), sausages tiny bit too charred, didnt really get the plain and lightly cooked potatoes - surely could improve that component, and only got one leaf of the (nicely dressedspinach. But still 5* for me as hard to come by such a comprehensive and generously portioned vegan breakfast, and appreciate challenges of keeping consistency with all those elements and an extremely busy Sunday!
Came here for a birthday treat. Im veggie, but trying to be more vegan and was really very impressed by the full English breakfast. As we were here at the weekend the garden was open and was a great place to sit and eat. Great food, staff could be friendlier, but still 5*.
Came here for breakfast on a weekday. It was fairly quiet and no waiting for a table required.Staff all friendly to locals but felt quiet cold to people they didnt recognise. Plenty of seating inside and outside.Went for the full breakfast which consisted of tasty sausages, sourdough toast, homemade style baked beans, mushrooms, scrambled tofu and sauteed spinach with a few roasted potatoes. Only thing missing was vegan butter to spread on the toast.I can say atleast that Ive been there, done that and got the t-shirt...but would I go back? Probably not.
Ive been meaning to try the Gallery Cafe for some time now so once I finally got a spare moment to grab some brunch with friends I was over the moon! I absolutely loved the food and coffee. Every element of my full English breakfast was tasty, especially the potatoes - amazingly crispy ! (Can I have the recipe please?!). I would have liked some dairy free butter to be offered for the toast as once it arrived it was a bit hard and coldish, but other than that everything was great. I also tried one of their doughnuts and that didnt fail to please either. Apart from that, the interior is super cosy and cute and I love that theres a lot of seating outside, I will deffo be coming back in the summer time. Recommended !
I swing by Gallery Cafe anytime I am in the area. The food is fantastic and the atmosphere even better. On a nice day you have the option of out from, inside and the large garden out back. There are always tons of gluten-free option for food and the coffee is on point. In Bethnal Green this is my go to cafe.
Our third time here for breakfast, its becoming a tradition during trips to London because its just so great. The tofu scrambles are the best weve had, the juices are incredible and fresh. Lovely service and a great crowd. Really nice to sit in the garden with reasonably priced lovely food and enjoy it all.
