Didnt t expect I would spend there more than 3 hours! It was incredibly educating and touching. Ive visited Solovetsky Islands 3 years back but havent t learned as much as this time. Great exposition. Definitely worth of having a Guide or at least audioguide. Staff was very friendly and assisted me when I needed. Most of displays had info in Russian and English. Many thanks!

A modern and sobering museum documenting the horrors of the Soviet gulag system. Captions and audio displays available in English which was very useful. It’s quite cool in the exhibition so wearing a jumper or jacket advisable.

One of the best museums Ive seen in my life. From its innovative first room to its emotionally charged last, this is an incredible experience. Packed with info, the museum allows you to choose your own level of immersion. Its neither too short, nor too long.In addition, almost all the information is available in English, including wonderful audio recordings from the memoirs of gulag survivors.Although I wouldnt recommend this museum for children, due to the grim nature of the subject matter, I would recommend this museum for everybody else!

This is genuinely the best museum I have been to so far. It has a modern interior and a very comprehensive presentation. It made me feel more emotions than any other museum. Every Russian text has English on the back of the plate and every audio is available in both English and Russian. If you are going to only one museum in Moscow, this should be it. Well done to the organisers!

Wow!!! This is such a moving and individual piece of history yet at the same time on a scale that is almost incomprehensible - this museum has hit exactly the right level of personal yet horrifyingly massive - sombre and thought provoking!! Very atmospheric design! Loved it!

One of the best museums in all of Moscow. Tells a true history of what happened during Stalin’s rule and highlights the impacts of the gulag system on the minds and lives of Soviets. Really important place to visit in Moscow!

Visited the museum during my last trip to Moscow (January 2020and it was hands down THE best museum Ive ever been to. If youre planning on visiting, make sure that youre giving yourself enough time for the trip because we spent a few hours there and ultimately had to leave before seeing everything since the museum was closing. An absolute must if youre visiting Moscow!

Absolutely brilliant and modern museum. The entourage really touches you and its very well equipped. The atmosphere absorbs you completely.Loved it!

The food here was amazing! Everyone seems very happy.If youre ever hungry and need a quick pick-me-up, just head to the GULAG.They got some amazing bread.Lots and lots of good borscht!They need to add a happy meal to be honest, dont know why Stalin didnt add one...

Unique and one of the best museums in Russia! Absolutely must visit in Moscow. You can spend a lot of time here if u r interested in Soviet history, so many stories and artifacts to explore. Curators work is outstanding

Gulags are a sad reminder of the communism that has held Russia hostage for decades. Anyone interested in the modern history of Russia and the Soviet Union should make an effort to visit the Gulag history museum.The museum provides a detailed account of the Gulag system in the Soviet Union, from the start all the way to the demise of it. The museum consists of many useful graphics about gulags interlaced with personal accounts of people held in these camps. The museum is somewhat small but well laid out and provides an excellent account of everything related to the gulags.Entrance fee is only about 400 rubles and well worth it. Theres also a good cafe in the museum serving coffee and pastries.

It is a sad part of the history, but in this museum it is presented brilliantly. Probably one of the best museums I have ever visited. Very interesting exhibition and the entrance fee is so cheap.

One of the best museums we have ever visited! Great multi-media showcases. It was super interesting and 3 hours were not enough to see everything, we would have loved to stay even longer.

Very well done and surpringly thoughtfully translated to ensure greater reach and exposure to an important part of history. This is off the beaten path for a tourist, but not to be missed if you are interested in this country.

Best Museum i have visited so far. It May Help a Bit If you have Red the Archipel gulag before or after visiting.The audio Guide ist Like an audio Book with good Readers and Background noices.You can spend about 4 hours if you like

Probably the best museum I visited in Russia. The exhibition were interesting and intriguing, and the recordings were genuinely touching. Most of the information was translated to English (a great improvement in comparison to other museums I visited), and the interactive part was showing well the progress during the years. I was missing a bit more information about the people operating the system.

Must see this exquisite and incredibly well thought out museum and memory to the atrocities of the Gulags and forced labour camps. There is an English translation on everything, even the audio stations. If youre visiting for more than a few hours, make sure this makes your list.The dark and windowless theme throughout perfectly compliments. This is something which everyone from every country should experience and learn from.There are pictures here that will haunt you and while there is nothing garish or directly confronting, the words and sheer senseless loss of life is overpowering beyond measure. Throughout there are images of seemingly benign and picturesque landscapes which withhold the dark horrors conducted and buried there.

Excellent museum. Well curated and interesting for all ages. Plenty to think about and good for Russian and English speakers alike. Found it easily enough by following the map on the museum website. I went with my 14 year old son who seemed to get something out of what could have been a very difficult historical subject. His reward was a bottle of Sprite in the cafe downstairs, which like the rest of the museum was well appointed and pleasantly not too busy.

A really amazing place! You can spend 5 hours here reading through everything. I like how they are honest about history and they do not seem to hide facts that you may not find in other places. I also really like the personal stories, theyre very well explained and it makes you feel history even more. It is more than worth it and its not expensive either

Reserve a day for this because after it youll want some time to breathe. Its an interactive museum for a personal experience, so one feels that they are right there with the victims. Its haunting. Do not miss this.

This museum is very well thought. I liked how a gloomy respectful mood is set in the rooms. Not only it has data about these dark times but also many stories from the people who lived it. After being here its impossible to see Russia the same way. Incredible display. It offers information in English, all of the displayed signs are flip cards that have both languages.

Really well designed museum. Signs can be flipped over for English or Russian text and good use of multimedia like video and sound. A sad and interesting history made available for people. Definitely worth a visit when in Moscow

Educational and enlightening. The Director and staff have done an amazing job. I would recommend to anyone curious of this part of Russian history. Most parts had the option for information in English too

Reel eye opener, if you only have a limited time this is a must do. If you really want to understand another culture here you see the truth stripped back and bear and although it may not be for everyone it tells a story of communism. Very powerful well layedout modern museum utilizing the latest technolohgy and original artifacts to tell of historical events that the modern western world has only glimpsed from the outside world while most Russians today have no knowledge of the Gulag.

Great little museum, I loved the little stories it had from victims that you could listen to in English and Russian.Though, much like an actual Gulag, this place was a bit tricky to navigate and hard to find the exit to 🤣

Great museum, rich in history and has English translation for everything (unlike many other museums in Russia). Really interactive, interesting and worth visiting for everyone who is interested in the history of Gulag. Inexpensive as well, we enjoyed much more than the State Hostorical Museum in the Red Square.

It was good, seemed more like an art exhibition than a museum in some places. I would have liked to see more artifacts but what was presented was done so very well. I would recommend!

State of art considering art and atmosphere. Never though that museum circumstances can make such an impact and not exactly of drama and horror. Nothing like this actually - just bold facts, how things were. Another point is that mere existence of such a great museum about such a dark side of Soviet history makes me proud of Russia and people living in.

Completed my stay in Moscow as the turning point of my travel through Russia, especially the handcrafted pieces and manuscripts that were the only thing rescued from the camps captured not only my mind but also my heart... 💔 sad but important piece of russian history, thanks for creating this important piece of time & history

The gulag museum is a must if you come to visit Moscow: it is really well made. Dont visit it without the audio guide that if I dont remember wrong there is English, Russian, Spanish and French (not Italian). It may take you 1 and half hour to visit all and its impossible to get bored or not get involved in the Russian history.

The Museum is relatively small but well documented on the Gulag issue. The path through the coercion techniques is clear. Footages and figures explain the actual events and the perception of the people, largely influenced by propaganda. The extension of the museum is quite limited, and there is a lack of explanations in English, that would probably better inform the audience.

One of the most informative, appealing, well thought museums I’ve ever seen. Not so emotional but argumentative, interesting, educational. I’d definitely recommend it if you are interested in understanding history. Equally user friendly for Russian and English speakers.

Very well designed exhibition, it makes you think about something we know very little about. This museum is quite far from metro lines, but it is definitely worth the trip!

The subject is definitely debatable, but the museum shows a very one sided perspective. In a few occasions, the information presented in the museum is plain wrong, and this reduces its credibility. Take the data presented here with a grain of salt. The execution falls a bit on the theatrical side (i.e. compared to the Washington Holocaust Memorial Museum). If you dont care about the academic veracity of the data presented here, and have a thing for theatrics, this is the place to go. If you would like to get unbiased information about the ГУЛАГ system, look elsewhere.

I was amazed by how well theyve reconstructed the museum. Now its one of the must-see places of Moscow. You definitely should go there, the history of Stalins repressions must be known all around the world. The hardest part for me was the room with the book in it and each page is one repressed person and the book tells you their story. Makes quite an impression.

Outstanding museum! Very easy to find on the outside if using Google Maps and easy to get to by bus. It looks small from the outside but there are a lot of things to see inside. You can view all the info in English on the big touch screens inside, you cant miss them. Bring your student ID and admission is free!
