GJ's Grill - Filipino restaurant in Melbourne, Australia
This place got good customer service…but… their food is not. Their tapa was horrible taste but the pork grill was admirable.
This was my first time trying Filipino food and I’ve been missing out! Everything was amazing. Their menu has about 10 items on it.The lechon was extremely crispy and super fatty, just the way I like it. The garlic rice that you can get on the side compliments the pork so well. The lechon sisig was perfectly balanced and tasted phenomenal. The sinigang salmon belly reminded me of canh chua. It was sweet and sour - perfectly balanced!! The salmon belly was cooked to perfection and they were really generous with it.I can’t wait to go back. I wanted to try their skewers but they sold out by the time we got there. Highly recommend trying this place out if you haven’t. It’s a bit tricky to find - you’ll need to find an alleyway along Frankliin St and/or ABeckett St.
Took quite a while to locate the shop. Its inside a building, through a lane. Ordered take away their star -Lechon with garlic rice and sisig. Then the surprise. They accept ONLY CASH. Have to go round the corner to atm cash. Hope the food don’t disappoint.
Went here during a trip to Melb and left very satisfied. The lechon was juicy and tender on the inside and on the outside the skin was so crispy and airy like chicharon. It came with their homemade lechon sauce which paired well with the meat. We also had the bbq chicken which was cooked perfectly and had great flavour. Already planning to come back whenever Im in Melb again!
Easily the best pork sisig, and lechon Ive ever had in my life... Just visiting Melbourne this is a meal that Ill never forget, and will make sure to come by as often as I can.
Absolutely delicious food! Its a tiny little place in a lane with not much seating. Friendly staff who told us about each dish before we ordered. Will be back.
Asked if the taste and smell of the pork is normal like the one they served me, it tasted sour and smelled weird, told me that I’m the only one who complained after all the people they have served and they are confident that nothing is wrong with it, but refused to smell or taste the pork they served me. Even my friends tried the pork and they said something was wrong with it. I was looking around and even the other table didn’t finish the food. Couldn’t handle a complaint
One of the best crispy pork i’ve had. Crispy skin, moist on the inside, fatty, sinful but satisfying. The gravy it came with balanced the flavours of the pork. And to top it all, fast and friendly service from the ladies who served me today.
the last time we tried to eat there, I was with my cousins who were visiting from Sydney, the old lady with short white hair terrorised us. she was so rude to us, she raised her voice and looked at us glaringly. Unbelievable experience, never going back there again. Anyone reading this I suggest just go to Cebu Charcoal Belly in Sunshine “sobrang babait nila dun” 100% ang customer service!!!
Tasty sisig. Gave me a taste of home. Lechon kawali is crunchy.
Update the website as it states that it is open on the 13th of June, my wife and I made the trip from Shepparton to try the food!.
Lechon crispy pork with garlic rice and pork skewers with garlic rice. Both were delicious, especially the lechon which has the perfect crisp. Definitely worth coming back to
We wanted to like this place. We really did. There were so many great recommendations. We came here with such high expectations. However, left not too satisfied.Ill preface by saying this resto is cash only, so make sure you withdraw before you arrive. Now, the sinigang was really good. Really reminds me of a Vietnamese soup canh chua. The salmon was a bit too fatty for our liking, but otherwise was the best dish we ordered. The lechon we had, had a very porky taste/smell when we ate it. So it wasnt very enjoyable. In addition to that, the coconut oil that was used to cook it was overpowering. We could not get pass this smell and taste. The lechon also wasnt as crispy as everyone has made it out to be. Im not sure whether we came on a day bad day or not.Overall, what you see in the pictures came to a whopping $59.50. Were usually okay with prices, but the quality on that day could not justify the price.Im not sure whether well come back here again.
Nice tucked in spot. Not a huge menu but everything they have is worth it. The lechon and gravy is outstanding

Very friendly staff and one of the best tasting lechon I’ve ever had!
Fxck! This chicken was freaking good! 200 g of chicken thigh and 230 g of rice. Just hit the macros! Business would see more customers if they incorporated chicken breast or sort of “make your own Philippines 🇵🇭 dish”
the location was hard to find but it brings you back to the taste that would bring you back in manila. sisisg, bbq and chicken bbq and lechon kawali
I am from Goldcoast and I must say, this is the best Filipino food I have ever had in Australia ☺️✨👍 Thank you!
Unfortunately they ran out of crispy pork. | Staff knew my friend was trying Filipino for the first time, they gave extra sides with the skewers. | Im picky with Sisig and I really liked this one, topped with plenty of chicaron
GJ’s Grill served delicious hawker-style Filipino meals. We tried their lechon and it was amazingly delicious! Crispy skinned, tender fatty pork coupled with sour Dole pineapple juice to balance all those savoury flavours. Perfect for quick lunches.
The bbq chicken and pork are ok. But dont order the Belly (Salmonsoup, since the price is not justified because its more of Salmon carcass/scraps that are being used and hardly any belly at all.
Worth finding this place.Short walk into the arcade off Franklin St.Friendly service.Clean.Food was good.Best Crispy Pork in Melbourne! It really was crispy!Milk fish & chicken were nice.Sliced pork was bit dry.Home made papaya relish was good.Glad we found this little gem.
Good food that tastes of home, very friendly staff. Its a tiny place and menu selection is limited, but always a great choice if youre looking for a feeling of "home-cooked" Filipino food in the city.
Store was mostly clean, slightly disorganised with the surfaces a little oily but that can be normal in most pinoy shops even in the phillipines. There was only a limited amount of food selections available but they do them good enough.. keep up the good work
It’s was beautiful! The place goes unnoticed because it is small but you get a big surprise with the food. It reminded me of home food! Im not from the Philippines, but Latinos eat very similarly :)
Great place to eat if you’re craving for that home-cooked style Filipino meal. We ordered the Lechon and Salmon Belly Sinigang. Both dishes didn’t disappoint...just how my grandma would cook them...no fusion, just that authentic Filipino taste. Serving was generous. We had to order extra rice (like most Filos do, i guess 😉). It was a quiet time of the day when we came so the service was excellent. We were very well attended to. Overall experience for this Filipino restaurant is great. Will definitely come back to try their other dishes. 👍🏼
I will never recommend this restaurant. They allow one hour to sit and enjoy the food. Less than an hour, that lady who i think is a manager, was already rushing you, every 5 minutes she comes and asks if you’re done. The pressure!! Not a peaceful place to dine in. Definitely won’t recommend this place. Go somewhere else where you can enjoy your foods.
Some of the best lechon Ive ever had. Hits that perfect golden ratio of tender meat to fatty layer to beautifully crisp skin. Have it with the garlic rice and if you can, ask for some vinegar & chilli dipping sauce. You wont go wrong.
The place is a bit hard to find when coming in for the first time. This is our go to place if we crave for some good pork Filo dishes. It’s a no frills place, garlic rice is awesome paired with crispy pork or pork skewers.Missing the condiments on the table, and my kids favourite Crispy pata (pork knuckle).Would recommend going for a quick lunch. Try their salmon soup as well.
So Ive been to this place once before, and the two guys working there were good and charged me the right price and got served what was exactly shown in the menu. Had it been the same today, I would have given this place 3 or 4 stars.Today I went back, and ordered Half Chicken and Can of Coke. Was overcharged and the lady charged me almost $30 instead of like $20 for the whole lot. I could have gotten a whole roast duck elsewhere. The food came relatively quickly, and all I got was just two pieces of chicken and rice, nothing else. Seriously dont know how I was going just eat rice and chicken only, without some pickles and not think it was a prison meal or something. I had to ask for the pickles which was pictured in the menu instead of being given it as shown in the menu. The lady lady tried to give chili sauce of the pickles initially. The taste of the chicken was alright it was tender and had a good taste, but seriously, poor service to me. Everyone else was probably served better and charged the menu prices. Shame.
The food is delicious, they are very generous with the serving and very good customer service. The place is easy to find, it could be a small place but the ambience is good. No doubt rating this place a 5 star. Will definitely recommend this place!
Small menu, the lechon is good. Good for a last minute place to eat if youre close by. Lovely little filipina women to greet you. Nice garlic rice. Very, very large soup (sinigangI reccomend for sharing!
I love it here and come here with friends and family whenever Im in the city. My favourite dish is the lechon (roast porkwith garlic rice - its the perfect combination of crispy and melt in your mouth and I love the atchara (picklethat comes on the side. Eating in surrounded by giant photos of Philippine landscapes is pretty cool too. And they have a new shop in Docklands which I can confirm is just as good. One of my favourite places in Melbourne.
Its the Lechon bro!!! But grilled chicken is good too, garlic rice is a must too 😋😍
Great place to grab a quick meal such crispy pork, charcoal grilled chicken come with rice. And the rice can be chosen either garlic rice or normal steam rice. The foods are awesome especially charcoal grilled chicken is a must!!! With a smell of herbal marinated in chicken and grilled, the taste is great!! Juicy and so tender. Housemade paw paw Pickle is also recommended good combo with chicken. The pickle is also in available for take home in a 600g. only just $8.5.Staffs are also very friendly. Will definitely come back again..Highly recommend for quick and cosy meal..
One of the crispiest pork Ive ever tasted. Really delicious meat but for the price, its a tad too little. The place is slightly hidden. Theres a korean restaurant on the main street and an alley left to it. Go in that alley and youll soon find it on the right side.Service is good and staff is friendly. There are few seats inside and when we went on Sunday for lunch, it was almost full.
Really great and authentic Filipino food! Tender meat, crispy lechon, yummy sisig... all the food we tried were very tasty. I went with a colleague who isnt a Filipino and he loved it! The owners are very lovely and friendly. Quick service too. Indeed a hidden gem in the city. Will definitely come back for more.
Best roast pork ever. Its so good. Its a hidden gem in the city. The foods are good but hardly very crowded.
Had this for takeaway. The pork was amazing but a bit too fatty, the sauce was really nice. I love the chicken skewers!Would buy again for group lunch/dinner.
Really good find! Place may be difficult to stumble into as it is in the middle of a tiny alleyway, but if youre committed to getting some lechon (pork or chicken), youll definitely find it! Great serving and great taste -- my fussy Aussie hubby loved the food so much, he was keen to go back for dinner on the same day! The pork lechon is more lechon kawali as opposed to the roasted variety, but it doesnt disappoint!
Filipino food is severely underrated. I had the roasted pork on a spit called lechon on garlic rice. It is so delicious. The mang tomas (liver garlic sauceis addictive, and the archara (pickled vegetablesbalance this meal. Ive also had the chicken, and the beef tapa which are great too.The interior is basic but cosy. Youre not here for fine dining, youre here for authentic Filipino food. The service is so friendly. Its very mom and pop.The people who know about this place love it. Because its hidden away, you might not see it on your walks through the city, but its definitely worth the adventure.Have a try because you wont be disappointed. Unless youre a vegetarian.
Had the crispy pork on garlic rice. Meat was delicious with a generous serve. Really crispy skin with tender chewy meat. Its a bit on the heavy side due to the high amount of fat so you might feel a bit heavy by the end of it.Looking forward to trying out other menu items. Place is down a lane just off Franklin St.
This Filipino shop is a hidden gem. Always loved their tender and juicy chicken, as well as their pork skewers and lechon (crispy pork belly). Make sure you have them with the garlic rice and pickles!
id you miss filipino style food. the place to visit! really love their home made gravy!
Simple, hearty Filipino grill that is bursting with flavours and so juicy. Friendly staff and prompt service.
You dont have Kare kare. Dont get me wrong you have outstanding grills and roast meats. You might wanna consider hiring more pleasing staff not just those who know the food but those who are pleasant with customers. Hiring white Australian students might cater better to the locals.
Bought a takeout portion of the Lechon with garlic rice, and a chicken skewer. The chicken was a little charred but otherwise done nicely. Tasty and juicy still. The Lechon was great! The skin was very crispy and the meat inside was still juicy. Doesnt need any sauce because it was great on its own! The garlic rice was surprisingly good as well. Will definitely be revisiting and eating in next time. Im sure itll taste better freshly prepared.
I love the place where they put the Philippine popular landmarks on the wall. Staffs were friendly and the food was good. We ordered pork skewers, grilled chicken and pork with rice. It was perfectly cooked but not dry. The sauce was very nice as well (well balance). We just came there in Melbourne for holiday and this restaurant is worth checking out.
Tried the milk fish bangus last night. Amazing.Limited experience with filo food but the lechon is crispy and not dry. The beef tapas was a tad tough but very flavoursome. The garlic rice and pickles compliment the bbq meats perfectly.
