1 The Terrace, Fremantle WA 6160, Australia, Mandurah
Large, old penitentiary providing interactive cultural exhibits on convict life, tours & a cafe.
Highly recommend ! The staff were great, good stories to share . Kids found it very entertaining. Spook factor is pretty good also:)
Great place to visit, will be going on another tour soon. Kids loved it. The staff are amazing. Fair prices in the gift shop (rare these days)
Definitely check this Heritage Listed Prison. As did 2 tours True Crime and Behind Bars both were excellent
Great tour and interesting tour.Staff were super friendly and helpful! 10 out of 10 for every member of staff we delt with.Only lost a star because we unfortunately timed our tour while the sound check for the concert was going on so detracted from the atmosphere. Not really their fault though.
Go visit it if youre a history or architectural enthusiast. Staff are passionate and helpful. Highly recommend the tours to get the most of your visit, the tours are not wheelchair friendly unfortunately. The staff are fully invested and knowledgeable. We bought tickets on the day at the start of the season. One of the tour options was cancelled but there were other themes leaving regularly.A 15min slow walk up the hill from the markets but there was plenty of car parking spaces if you drive. There is a cafe and gift shop on site.
Did 2 tours this week.one with Ian a very knowledgeable guide who took us on the convict tour. Very informative. Then Matthew took us on the behind bars tour. Very good insight into the prison in more modern times. Highly recommend this place. Also lovely cafe and plenty in the free section to check out. Great place to visit
Really interesting place. Tour guide was very informative. The conditions the convicts lived in were mind boggling. Prison was in use until early 1990s. The cells only had a bucket for a toilet right up til it closed to prisoners.Well worth a visit.
Brilliant Brilliant. Did the true crime and torch light tours. Guides were great. Entertaining and extremely knowledgeable. Would highly recommend.
Great place to take family and friends. Old monumental site of Western Australia as you take a look through the history of Fremantle Prison. Went here with a group of friends and took the torchlight tour, one of of many tours available. Our tour guide was lovely as everything was explained during the tour about the history of the prison as well as stories of some of the inmates.
Did the Torchlight tour, it was amazing and the stories were really good, they had the perfect mix between spooky and informative. Definitely recommend this tour as it is a different experience from the day ones. Fran was super nice as well and she made our tour special, we loved how committed she is with the tour.
Great experience.Has many options to suit all.Stories are fantastic and our guide was full of energy, stories knowledge and humour. We did the tunnels tour which was great value for money. Id Honestly say Probably one of the best things to do in Perth.Highly recommend to people. But if you have clostrophobia I wouldnt recommend for people
We did the true crimes tour, it was informative and went long enough. The guide was funny and knowledgeable.
A nice historical place to visit. They do have free galleries. But I think the tour charges are quite expensive
Highly recommend visiting this museum. We did the Behind Bars tour and learned so much. It was incredible walking through the prison and seeing all the areas the prisoners used and hearing stories from when it was open. Matthew was a super knowledgeable and warm guide.
Fantastic heritage site to visit when in Perth. The guided tours at Fremantle Prison was amazing. I took the “Behind Bars Tour” with my fiancée and I can say this was by far one of best experience I had in Perth. Will absolutely recommend if you are visiting Fremantle. Cheers!
Great tour guide had an excellent sense of humour and very informative
A great place to visit in Freo. Free entry with some paid tour. Would recommend to buy one of the tours to have a look inside the prison. It’s definitely gonna worth it! Staff all very friendly.
Confronting but well worth the visit. Guides are friendly and accommodating. Glad I was there only as a tourist!
If you love history and a few creepy feels.... Then go to the Fremantle Prison! This is the second time we have visited the prison and we enjoyed it just as much as the first time. The tour guide made sure the torchlight tour was both a suspenseful and comedic experience at the same time. A great place to learn some Perth history.
This was one of the best tours ive ever been on. The guide was informative and humorous. We are looking forward to doing the tunnel tour soon.
Had been before..found it harder for photography with all works going on..but that said an enjoyable tour with great guide ...i know not always possible ..but a toilet really should be available at halfway point..especially for kids and older ppl...
If you love history , then this Prison is the place to visit. I enjoyed it better than the markets. Took a basic tour for $22 and loved all the info. Thank you Jane for all the info. Was taken to the gallows and good photo opportunities for memories. Cant imagine being sentenced in the late 1800s or early 1900s. So cold inside.
Absolutely loved our tours. We did the Behind Bars tour with James and he was amazing as so much fun to tour with. Then our Tunnels Tour was outstanding and our tour guide Courtney was fantastic. I’m Perth born and bred and love the enthusiasm that the guides have for this fantastic heritage listed site. Their knowledge is amazing. Thank you so much guys. See you very soon for more amazing experiences ❤️
Did the Fremantle Prison Torchlight Tour. Highly recommend. Our guide was fantastic in educating and keeping the group engaged. Lots of interesting facts and anecdotes. There are a few pleasant surprises along. They provide each guest a torch for the journey which you get to keep as a souvenir.
A really fascinating piece of WA and Australian history from colonial to modern times. Beautifully preserved (only stopped operating as a prison in 1991and staffed by enthusiastic and friendly people with an amazing wealth of knowledge about the place. Some real characters among the tour guides. One or two should definitely be on stage.A great testament to its popularity is the amazing numbers on all the tours* Ive been on in the last three days - even at the start of a wild, wet, windy winter.* I highly recommend the three-tour deal to get a well-rounded understanding of the prison from colonial to modern times, as well as a crash course in some of the more infamous residents.Superb place. Great value.
If you love love true crime and documentaries, this is a must see place! There are 5 tours - we ended up going to 2 tours - history and being the bars tours. It was amazing. We were immersed into the unique stories of inmates, beautiful drawings displayed on cell walls, their lives behind bars. Unfortunately due to time constraint, we couldnt go to other 3 tours (each tour started at specific times and approx 1.5 hours.
Took the Behind Bars tour. Very informative. Our tour guide, Jane, was a fountain of knowledge.Theres lot of different tours so if you cant go to all of them, research which one suits your interest.
Fantastic tours from Brett & Deb. Very informative and awesome information. I would of hated to end up here if I was sent to jail in the 1980s.Well worth the visit and tours
We did the torch light tour here last week and it was absolutely fantastic. The tour guide was an absolute pro at what she does and made the whole thing so fun and interesting plus the place as a whole just has really fascinating history. All the other staff were lovely and I really just enjoyed the whole thing start to finish. Highly recommend!
Loved it, we did 2 tours ancient history and true crime.
A must go to place . Ticketed Parking available onsite..cafe, museum within the grounds at entrance..souvenirs available. The tour guide was very knowledgeable in the history of the "Behind bars tour" . I will be returning to experience the other tours available.
It was very useful in educating us about the culture and what the prisoners had faved in the past and I really loved and enjoyed it alot!
Did a fantastic tour today at Fremantle Prison with a tour guide Janine. The facility was incredible and the tour was so informative and interesting. Janine was super engaging and helpful answering all of our questions.Sarah at the front gate was also wonderful, telling us more stories of the prison and prisoners lives. Highly recommend this tour!
Had a great time we did the convict tour. Our guide was pleasant and funny.
Underground tunnel tour was absolutely amazing!! Sarah the tour guide is brilliant, great banter and made fun for everyone! Definitely recommend this tour.
Our tour guide was great? A great place to visit the history within the prison was amazing.
Did Behind the Bars Tour and then the Tunnels tour. They were both fantastic. Behind the Bars with Mannie was so informative and really gave you a feel of what it was like. The Tunnels Tour was something different. I was a little nervous with dodgy knees but no issues with the ladders and boats. Sarah, Benny and Simon were the best! So full of information and history, so supportive and also hilarious. Highly recommend.
Excellent place to visit!Very rich history and a pleasant experience with all the staff eager to teach and have fun whilst doing it! Amazing time was had!
Fantastic tour!!Wow what a great day. We came here on the spur of the moment and loved it.We were able to book a tour without pre booking which was so handy. We booked the "Behind Bars" which covered the history of the jail. Our tour guide James was amazing 👏 Such an informative and knowledgeable tour guide with a great personality. James knew how to keep us interested and his jail trivia was fascinating. Thanks James!! 😊Free parts are available for viewing by the public including the art gallery. The art is contributed by current inmates of WA.Highly recommend giving the jail a visit and doing a tour.
We had a wonderful experience staying in this unique accommodation. We had a good look at the place and learn a lot about the history of the prison. Very clean and lots of common areas to sit around and chat. Great location and easy to access to Fremantle CBD. Friendly and helpful staff, great value for money , would like to come back again.
Would definitely recommend visiting here. We did the convict tour as my son is learning about it at school. Our guide, moira, was very knowledgeable and obviously very passionate about the history of it all.
An absolutely must visit place in Freo. WAs only UNESCO world heritage site proudly showing the history of convicts and their lives. The tours are incredible!
An amazing piece of WA history, all the tours are well organised and guided with great staff. Would highly recommend getting to know a little bit of history for our state.
The torchlight tour was so scary but fun, great guide taught us the history of the prison and the stain of the behaviour happened back then. Just be careful if you have claustrophobia, it was quite dark and half of the times in a closed concrete room, but its worth it visiting.
A great visit. Our guide, Ben is amazing. Sharing his wealth of knowledge on the place, he kindly offered us to use the buckets to ease ourself. The prison holds alot of stories hidden between the walls all these years. Hopefully it is being conserved for years to come.
So much fun the prison night tour. So glad we got a whole bunch of kids on our tour as they made it so much fun. Need hearing aids now. So interesting and to think its only been closed just under 30 years. Tour guides are so young but very good at there jobs. Very good storytelling and would recommend it for all ages. The Artwork on the cells are just awesome.
Outstanding experience. All staff are incredibly knowledgeable and passionate. Highly recommend the tunnels tour, it was fantastic.#1 Attraction in Perth.
3 of us went on the torchlight tour on a Friday night. My partner and son found it interesting but I had been on the day tour a couple of years earlier so was hoping the night time tour was going to be scary. It wasnt scary at all for me so I was a bit disappointed. The guide was very good and animated and told some good stories. You get a little torch which you get to keep and there is a gift shop if you want a souvenir. Try to get there early so you can check out the other areas with interesting stuff in them and yes you can take photos and videos!
Went for another tour of the Establishment and was another really nice experience. Did the convict prison and behind bars tours both with different guides both excellent and very knowledgeable, was lucky enough to do the behind bars your by myself with the guide which was good. Can’t wait to do my first tunnel tour there and to do more tours as it’s different every time.
This is a great place to visit with a number of tour options. The Convict Prison tour was fascinating. Our guide Ian had so many fascinating stories to share. The torchlight tour with Marni was great too, but not for people who like to be surprised…. In the dark…. In a prison…. Surrounded by strangers 😜Give yourself time to view the exhibits too they are well worth a look.
