Franceschetta58 - Restaurant in Modena, Italy
While the Osteria was above budget, we cant pass up the opportunity to dine in here while in Modena. I didnt know what to expect but the experience was lovely. The place was beautifully and tastefully decorated. The staff were very professional and attentive. They are very knowledgeable about the menu and were very patient with giving my friend and I the best experience possible. So we opted for the Tradition in Evolution tasting menu with the three wine pairing. The whole experience took us around 2.5hours. As tasting menu goes, the food is just enough to tickle the senses. That said, I think I enjoyed the company more than the food. Dont get me wrong, the food was good and despite the small portions, my friend and I were quite full after the meal. Its a good "dip of the toes" into the "fine dining" experience.
This is my third time attending this restaurant and unfortunately I do think the quality has gone down over the years. We had to €55 tasting course and one of the pasta dishes was almost tasteless. The other dishes were lovely but could definitely be improved.
I was surprised just how good it was. Food was excellent and very well priced. Highly recommended. Also, I noticed a lot of reviews complaining about how slow it was. This worried me as I didn’t have much time but I shouldn’t have worried. Lunch came at a normal pace, maybe even slightly fast
Nice Restaurant and friendly staff, good food but not outstanding. The Tortellini however I liked a lot!
I was surprisingly disappointed with the lunch at Franceschetta58. Although, the service was great, the food was unfortunately subpar. We had the lunch tasting menu and added the famous tagliatelle. The starters were nice, however, once we got to the three main courses, we became overwhelmed with heavy, salty, imbalanced dishes. The repetition was two pastas and a meat course that were over salted and too heavy, especially for lunch. Overall, would not recommend for a tasting menu, however if ordering a la carte, there are a few items that will suffice.
Great alternative to try Massimo Bottura cucina if you havent made a reservation one year ago to Osteria Francescana.Friendly young staff, two degustazione menu options and great cost benefit including options for wine pairings and the best the region offers.
We went for the name to be honest. We had really high expectations. My partner and I had each of the different tasting menus. The quality was top notch. We liked about 3/4 of our dishes which is just our preferences. The wine was good. The service was friendly but a bit inattentive and our table wasn’t bussed between courses. Could be improved there. The space was beautiful.Pics of my favorite dishes.
Simply put, one of the best meals my husband and I have ever had. And we are passionate about good food. We enjoyed this lovely dinner while on our honeymoon in Italy. The staff were incredibly warm and knowledgeable, and the food was creative, inviting, and delicious. We will never forget our time at Franceschetta58. Thank you for hosting us!
We were looking forward to sharing a meal in this well renowned restaurant. The service was very good. However, I had the 5-course tasting menu and was very disappointed with the food. The burger and the prosciutto were tasty and the wine pairing was adequate, but the other courses were disappointing. I have had the chance to enjoy excellent food around the world, but this time I felt like they were trying to be different just to be different. The mix of ingredients such as the asparagus cream caramel did not cut it for me. These ingredients just dont make sense together. My spouse was also disappointed with the 7-course tasting menu. Every course featured a different kind of bitter ingredient. For instance, the cuttlefish filled with bitter greens ruined the subtle taste of the seafood. Also, the radicchio, sour cherry and beetroot plate was plain awful. She, too, thought the wine pairing was fine.
Everything perfect! We taste the really quality fish and nice dinner.
I must confess I had very high expectations when I booked this restaurant and both my partner and I were not fully convinced. I invited him over lunch for his birthday and it was good but not outstanding. Service was slow and perhaps too little for the amount of customers and time between the dishes was so long to the point we lost appetite. For being the "low-cost" sister restaurant of the worlds most famous restaurant, I expected the service would be more customer oriented. Food was beautifully decorated and delicious but I am not sure I would recommend it as top place given the amazing offering in Modena.
We managed to sneak in without a reservation at lunch time and had a thoroughly fantastic experience. We had the small tasting menu and matched wines, and could not eat another bite for the rest of the day. Truly sensational. The staff were all lovely and spoke flawless English. If you book in for lunch here make sure you go to Acetaia Marisa Barbieri to experience their story and pick up some of their incredible vinegar - it is only a short walk down the street and should only take a half hour.
Food was delightful, unfortunately the service was terrible, we waited up to 45minutes between dishes, a dinner that could have lasted 2h ended up lasting over 3h30, the staff was not very attentive in this respect either. Unfortunate, as it put a very sour note to what could have been a wonderful experience, don’t think we will be coming back.
This is the baby sister to Osteria Franchescana, with many of Massimos hits. The food references the bounty of the region and challenges your pallete a bit. We were exhausted when we arrived but enjoyed a nice, long, Italian meal nonetheless.
This was a huge treat for us, and wow was it worth it. One of the best meals I have ever had. We tried both tasting menus to experience the traditional and experimental sides of Modena and they were incredible. The tortellini was truly the tortellini of tortellini. Staff were exceptional and we had some great conversations. Cant believe we made it off the waitlist. A meal to remember.
We tried both tasting menus and they are both great. Overall, the I love modena menu wins, but the tortellini alla parmesan was the best dish. Totally worth visiting in Modena.
The a la carte main dishes we tried were not that good. The cod was not tasty and had a strange filling, and they served the "grilled" pigeon ice-cold! :-(The starters and the bread selection was very good.
Good Service. Not tasty main dish (cod). The pigeon was ice cold inside. Very disappointing. In total the tastes of the dishes were not special or very aromatic.
I had the tasting menu and it was fantastic! I added on the tortellini in Parmigiano Reggiano cream sauce, and got a 5 wine pairing for €30. The meal was long, about 3 hours, so if you are in a hurry you might be better suited asking for all of the dishes at once.Service was friendly, attentive and spoke decent English.I tried the many ages of Parmigiano Reggiano which includes 5 chunks of 30-120 month (that’s 10 years!aged Parmigiano Reggiano cheese and I’d recommend just one for the table to experience as a novelty, as anything over 36 months by itself gets very chalky and dry, in my opinion. If it’s highly aged and put into other dishes I’m sure it’s fine but eaten straight, I only could have a bite or two of each to experience the flavors and difference. The “hamburger” is amazing, but it’s more a slider in shape and size, extremely juicy because of the traditional Modena sausage and Parmigiano Reggiano blended in.A very delicious place allowing you to experience some of Massimo Bottura’s cooking at a fraction of the cost!
Incredibly nice staff, great food and they even made vegetarian versions of their set menus for us.
Fantastic restaurant! Loved how great the food was, and how it felt in a more low key but very stylish environment. What made our experience that much better was the amazing team which treated us so kindly. We had both the tasting menu and the a la carte options, everything was absolutely delicious, especially the Emilia Burger appetizer and the Tortellini del Tortellante first course! Highly suggest making a reservation.
You don’t stay here for eat a lot, but to have a great food experience (even if the bill is not affordable for all): and that’s i found. Recommended.
Exquisite food in an chic, modern setting. Definitely a must visit if in Modena.
It was such a disappointment for us. Massimo Bottura is my idol and to try his food was my first bucket list item. Osteria was fully booked when we booked our travel. So, we decided to try Franceschetta58 instead. Massimos tortellini was one the food I have been dying to try. But believe me, you can have a better tortellini in any other simple trattoria. We tried several things including tasting menu. But unfortunately, the best thing was the bread. Others were just average or below. No seasoning, nothing special. Three stars are just for the name of MB. It was just sad.
Great service, innovative cuisine, and wonderful wine pairings. We both got the tasting menu (five courses for the mister, seven for me, the glutton :and was well worth it. The seven course tasting was a bit more adventurous (smoke eel risotto is delish - who knew? ), but the five course menu also offered plenty of delights. Splurge on the wine pairing and make it a night to remember.
Let’s start with the obvious - we had a great meal. This is Massimo Bottura’s more casual digs, and as expected, it is chic, with expert service, and very tasty food. That said, we were not as blown away as we thought we would be. While everything was cooked to perfection and there were some real highlights - the famous tortellini, of course, and the divine chocolate fondant with caramel ice cream - we didn’t leave feeling like it was one of the best meals we’ve ever had. I guess our expectations were just too high considering Bottura’s reputation. I would still recommend this restaurant as an affordable alternative to those who are fans of Bottura’s cooking and looking for a night out in Modena. I’d also recommend to perhaps try the tasting menu (which we didn’tas it seemed to feature some unique dishes that aren’t on the regular menu.
What to say about this wonderful place. A perfect service, with tailor made options for children. The food, experience and people were exceptional
Modern Italian food representative of Modena. Would highly recommend anyone in Modena to give it a try.The smoked eel risotto was very enjoyable and sophisticated. The flavor of smoked eel is immediate but ephemeral, as the cream sauce is fairly light and goes easy on the cheesiness. It almost reminds of congee, especially with pickled vegetables already mixed in.The lamb belly was cooked very well, providing the best parts of belly (rind, fat, and meatwithout any hint of overbearing fattiness. However i found it to be a little too salty. The chocolate fondant’s inner chocolate sauce was so delicious, and that alone made the entire dessert amazing.
The "sister" restaurant of Osteria Francescana! This place is a real gem! Its all managed by young people and all more than capable to deliver a sensational experience. You can choose between two different tasting menus and theres also wine pairing if youd like. The food is all amazing and the products super fresh. This is a place that, with time, will become more and more popular so just take advantage of it now and visit it because you wont regret it. Complimenti ragazzi, spaccate davvero 👌
If I lived in Modena, I would probably go here often for lunch. However, we stopped in for a quick lunch on our way from Maranello to Florence. All was good - from the RSVP message they sent as a reminder to the attention of staff and dishes we had.
Everything was really good and tasty but somehow, because of the name and the reputation of Massimo, we really thought we would come out of this restaurant with life changing emotions. Instead, we felt like we had a very nice meal with little twists here and there without being completely blown away. The chittara pasta for instance , was really good and probably took a lot of work to put together but I felt like the flavour were a bit blend or not as strong as we expected it to be.We still liked the overall experience and would recommend people to check it out.
I think I share some of the other reviewers sense of having gotten my expectations insanely high for this meal. That said, my expectations were mostly met, and I very much enjoyed myself.Food - very inventive and fun, 5 stars. We had the dinner tasting menu, Ill attach photos.Service - 5 stars, very nice.Atmosphere - 5 stars, they played Beatles songs when we were there, which was lovely. Massimo popped in briefly, and I wanted to go shake his hand and say hello but I hesitated. If you see him, dont hesitate or hell leave before you know it!This is Italian-inspired cuisine, but outside of the "box" that other Italian kitchens will cook in. Worth a visit.
Great place for lunch, we got the "smart lunch menu" and was an awesome experience.
Amazing food. Smart lunch is a very very good deal
Amazing in every way.We had dinner on our first day in Modena and when back for Lunch very next day. It was that good.A Must visit , when you are in Modena .
I had an amazing experience. They have a lunch menu with 3 courses for a reasonable price. Good service, good wine selection and amazing food. Totally recommend this place!
It wasnt just memorable, It was an unforgettable meal I had in Franceschetta 58, "the little sister"/"the daughter" of the best restaurant in the world (twice!- Massimo Botturas Osteria Francescana. In a matter of fact, the quality of the food is the same - and why shouldnt it be?, and the main difference is the much lighter atmosphere - and why shouldnt it be?EXCELLENT.
Overall very nice place. Atmosphere, food are all fine. Staff is also very nice and try their best to accommodate you. The only reason I rate 4* is that main course, pork belly was a little too fatty.
I have tried their dinner. The staffs were very nice and friendly, they worth to get 5 stars for their service. For the food, maybe my expectations are too high, so I got a bit disappointed. It is still worth to have a try.Be aware that you may not able to get the last train to leave Modena after the dinner, so it is better to stay one night nearby.
Tasting menu was very good!Price was super reasonable and they had a nice wine selection. The whole vibe was informal and the staff was always helpful.
I can’t say enough great things about this place... we blocked off about 2.5 hrs for my 7 courses (and vino& my wife’s 3. It was one of the best lunches we’ve had during our time in Italy (and I didn’t have to sell a kidney). I attached the photos of the plates before their demise...semplicemente perfetto!
The pork ribs were perhaps the best I’ve ever had in my life.
Absolutely delicious meal. We couldnt get reservations at Osteria Francescana, but came here and loved every single bite. Everything in the cured meats appetizer and traditional tasting menu was perfect.
Had high expectations given it was a cousin restaurant of Osteria Francesca. Food and flavors were good but not amazing. Presentation for some of the dishes were ok. Service was great though and the restaurant was bright, homey, and casual
Amazing experience. You HAVE to book well in advance. Highlight was the tortillino and steak tartare
one of the best meals ive ever had in italy. Simple yet sophisticated; easy to understand yet so deep in enjoyment. Perfect service, not outrageous prices. Perfect perfect
Super food. Super staff. Small venue. Book in advance. Must do if your in the area.
Came here without realising it is the sister restaurant of Osteria Francescana (World #1 Restaurant& the food was incredible. We had the Orrecchiette with Burrata mozarella, truffle & anchovies (other bits in it too), the Tortellini with Parmigiano Regiano sauce & the Pork Belly with Balsamic sauce on carrot & Ginger purée. They threw in a free beautiful pea, bacon & pecorino cream starter too. For me, the Tortellini was the best pasta dish Ive had in my life, the Orricchiette was uniquely flavoured & the pork belly was incredibly soft, salty & delicious. Dessert was also something to remember! The house Cheesecake with raspberry & chocolate & the Sabbiosa with a mascarpone cream. The Sabbiosa is something truly special; the texture was light & fluffy but it was still firm to touch. The wines are also very reasonably priced.10/10 here; legitimately nothing to fault!
What an amazing restaurant! As some other comments say, service is kind of tricky because it gets easily crowded and they are understaffed, but they do their serious bet and the food surely compensates for the slightly slow service. So, they have a fixed price lunch menu, €19 for appetizer, main dish, and dessert, and it is truly a low price for the quality of the food.I had the Songino Salad for starter, which is green beans, crispy bacon, balsamic vinegar, and Parmesan cheese; a good combination of green vegetables and salty bites. For main dish I had the Pigeon; seemed simply at the beginning but turned out to be delicious and the liver sauce (like soft patewas amazing. For dessert there was no choice, just one to take, but no choice was needed as the one they had was amazing, coffee custard, chocolate cookie chunks, orange, and raspberries all mixed and fantastic
All the hype is based on truth and more. We had the tasting menu (I am only showing the dessert unfortunatelywhich consisted of 4-6 dishes for 50-70 euro. Highly recommend getting the tasting menu especially if you travelled all the way to Modena for this restaurant anyway, since you get a variety of dishes. It was a very delicious variety of seafood, vegetables, pasta and meat dishes and ofcourse dessert at the end. Service is kind although a bit slow, but I think this is because it was a "relaxed" Italian way of serving versus the rushed feeling from America. No complaints, would go again. Reservation is a must.
