Aras Ide, Main St, Ballynacragga North, Foynes, Co. Limerick, Ireland, Cill Chainnigh
Replica B314 flying boat and radio room in the original terminal building, plus a maritime museum.
Very interesting, plenty of exhibits and also great for movie fans
The museum is definitely interesting and the fact that the actress, Maureen OHara was a supporting patron of it due to her husband being a pilot is a juicy piece of trivia about the place. The airplane on site was fun to tour and to see how the rich and famous use to travel in 1940s. The small exhibit of Maureen OHaras movie trivia is a fun touch. Nice way to spend a few hours in Shannon, Ireland.
Unique airplane museum and surprisingly the birth place of the Irish coffee and frequented by Maureen O’hare back in the day worth the visit
Popped in for a gorgeous Irish coffee where I was regaled with stories of the origins of Irish coffee at Foynes using hologram technology. The Maureen O’Hara displays were beautiful. I got to see the control room and explore an authentic Yankee Clipper plane. I was honoured to purchase a fantastic polo shirt from the Gift Shop and finished the visit with a delicious lunch made by Ellen & Mags. I throughly enjoyed my visit and would recommend everyone to make the trip out to Foynes.
This Place is Great for Kids or Adults so much to See& Lern foodWas spot on and Staff very friendlyAnd did not Cost Alot.
A very interesting museum with a full size replica of a Boeing Clipper being the main attraction. As Foynes is where Irish Coffee was first served, dont miss trying one in the cafe.
Worth a visit just for the history,of how it all started and ended
My wife & I called into the cafe for tea & scones. We had tea for two. One pot one tea bag €6. My wife had a cup cake which was €2.50 & I had a scon with jam & cream which was €3.00. Total €11.50 which I think is a complete joke. Its no wonder people are going abroad. Take my advice and avoid this place.
We were on tour and enjoyed it very much it was great you could get on the plane and look around
Very interesting museum have to admit it was part of a trip we were on and at first I thought it was not of our interests but I was so glad that we went as it turned out to be very interesting and we thoroughly enjoyed it and the Irish coffee.
Everyone should visit here. The well priced shop, and warm, friendly staff and great food make this a must to visit, and I havent even been into the museum yet.
I visit foynes flying boat every time i am travelling from Roscommon to kerry I stop off for a cuppa and some cake lovely lovely place and the staff are so friendly and welcoming 10 out of 10.
Great tour of the flying boats and history. Not to mention a fantastic breakfast during Mermaid week before racing 😁
A fabulous and very well presented museum. Staff are very friendly and being attached to a coffee shop, we were able to spend a comfortable time there.
I love this place and all the dedication of the people who established it and run it. Great cafe and very good content in the museum. The old control tower is worth the drive out. A must for anyone who likes history and aviation. Also I recommend reading the book Corsairville to get an understanding of what flying boats made possible and why their era was so short
Lovely place, helpful and enthusiastic staff, lots to do and see for adults and children. Lovely cafe too.
Small maritime and flying boat museum. Fantastic recreation of the first commercial passenger flying boat you can go into and explore. Climb up to the control tower. Quite small maritime area which is being expanded.
As usual great day. Good value an excellent experience. Cafe very enjoyable reasonably priced great food and lovely staff would recommend both to anyone
The museum didnt disappoint. Kids loved the simulators and the boat. There is also viewing area overlooking the harbour, the cafe and souvenir shop. We learned lots of new information I can recommend for visiting.
Popped in for a coffee but the food on offer was so tantalisig we decided to have lunch. The staff were lovely .I would highly recommend the foynes flying boat experience.
Very interesting. Unbelieveable to see an actual flying boat in situ. More improvements in the pipeline by all accounts. Looking forward to that. Maureen OHara exhibition is very emotional. So much of her personal things on view. What a woman.
Interesting spot. Lovely visit to see inside of flying boat and Maureen OHara collection particularly. Cafe nice too.
Great experience kids loved it
a lovely day. However they are extending the museum at the moment , so entry is not through main door but in through the restraunt. The fligh simulator could do wit updating, bit disappointed with the Maureen OHara area. As I could gather not the full collection on display.
The museum seemed to be very spaced out the last floor had hardly anything in it. The woman at the desk area seemed like she was having to do the job of two people as she had to escort people in then come back and serve at the ticket and gift shop area. There was a very good hologram room but I felt like it could have been displaying more than it was. It was very interesting walking around the flying boat model this was the highlight of the museum for me.
Surprised me this place, lovely food in restaurant then the tour of the museum and seaplane, Maureen o hara tribute room and top floor view. Enjoyed it a lot. Reasonable prices too.
Excellent great replica plane and loads of information
Great to see, hear and feel the great story of flying boats and surrounding areas. Food and Irish coffee were great. Coming back for more Irish coffee.
For a small museum…there’s loads of significant historical facts shown/displayed here. Will visit again
A really enjoyable experience, museum offers very interactive displays showcasing the era of the flying boat & really provides a great insight into the important pioneers of the industry & the significance of Foynes both national & international. The last remaining Boeing 314 is a fantastic feature of the experience offering the visitor a chance to step on board a flying boat to see what it felt like, a must visit would highly recommend. The lovely cafe & food on site is also a real treat, great coffee & great customer service. Not forgetting also the home of Irish coffee!
I had a wonderful experience here with my family. My tour guid Val was super friendly and funny. She made the trip a memorable one. I will be recommending to friends and family.
Very modern and stylish Museum, it was great fun. Very clean, bright and light rooms. Great friendly staff at the cash and ticket. A great place for Kids and adulte.
Wonderful museum undergoing expansion. Is very good now will be better when complete. Part of a flying boat, many displays, information, viewpoints and coffee shop. Well worth the admission fee.
It is a nice place to visit but I was expecting a bigger place. We paid 12 euros per person and it took around 30 min to go through.
Worthwhile visit, as a pilot, I appreciate the effort into preserving this important area in aviation history. Those were brave and skilled crews flying those boats across the Atlantic! The boys enjoyed the simulator and wanted to go back every day afterwards. Cool history of Irish coffee
This was a brilliant couple of hours, adult tickets were only €8 and for that you can walk all the way around the flying boat, and visit three floors of decent exhibitions. The highlight is obviously the boat, youll almost miss the stairs to the upstairs where you can sit in the cockpit. The Maureen OHara collection has some wonderful pieces, including an actual Oscar statue, and the Foynes harbour section has some great history about the history of trade and industry in the area. Make sure you go all the way to the the fourth floor as you can go outside and use the binoculars to look out across the Shannon estuary.
Arrived at 4.40pm and was told we couldnt eat as they were closing at 5pm. Take away tea/coffee only, if we wanted food we could go up the road! Would liked to have gone into the museum.
Very interesting place and all exhibits still open during current Covid measures. Very good food in their cafe!
Small sea plane museum in town of Foynes, Co. Limerick. Carpark outside. Access through resturant/cafe & gift shop.Museum is interesting as its full of facts regarding seaplanes landing in river Shannon. You get to see a real PAM seaplane. Its very big and impressive! You can go inside, sit in passenger seats, visit cockpit & navigation room. A must for any plane enthusiasts. Young children and adults can also enjoy a flight stimulation. The main museum covers information about important locals, maps, Foynes boating & shipping memorabilia, navigation artifacts, weather reports, etc. Also little hologram video about the first Irish coffee made a served in Foynes. Due to covid restrictions Irish coffee wasnt available to purchase or enjoy!Included in ticket price is the Maureen OHara exhibition, Maureen opened the museum in 1989 & visited it every year till her death in 2015. The exhibition is a little room of a few dresses, some awards and general information regarding Maureen. All items donated by her grandson.Worth a visit if in area but only a once. Cost of 2 seniors, 1 adult and 1 child €39. Wheel accessible in main museum only.
Sadly the museum was closed due to Covid restrictions when we passed there. The drive to Ballybunion is one of the most scenic routes in Ireland.
Great experience of all the trials to cross the ocean compared to todays planes. Easy parking very friendly staff and great collection of Maureen OHara life
Beautiful place to visit in Ireland. Didnt have a clue that flying boats ever existed. They were airplanes which landed on water, in Foynes. Travellers were welcomed with irish coffee to worm their blood.
The museum also has restaurant inside where you can order varieties of food. They also sell souvenir items, warm drinks and the special Irish Coffee. Breakfast, lunch, desserts are available on the menu. Staffs are friendly and the price is okay.
Very interesting especially the part about the 2nd world war. Worth a visit.
This is a great museum, lovingly maintained and very interesting. You can wander all around the flying boat, sit anywhere you want, ask any questions that you want, etc. The Maureen OHara tribute was nice, and informative as well. Theres a small coffee shop if youd like something to eat, and a decent gift shop as well. Go up to the top level to take pics of the harbor and the town.
This is a wonderful museum with a great history that most people know nothing aboue. Its really well put together and and really easy to navigate. The people working here have a great knowledge and pride in what they do and it shows. The family ticket price of €30 is really good value. O Regans restaurant is the home of the Irish coffee so what better place to sample one on the way through the museum. The replicia plane is really well made and adds so much to the whole experience. The Maureen O Hara exhibition is really lovely and has some amazind pieces of history in it. I will definitely be back in the future and will be taking people for a great day out.
An intereating museum covering that brief period in history when flying boats were cutting edge, and crossing the Atlantic was an adventure, before WW2 interupted things and then the jet engine made the crossings mere routine.Good exhibits, plenty to see and read and you get to have an Irish coffee where the drink was invented. (We started with that so we could walk it off in the museum.)Plenty of parking just outside, and really easy to find.
Some good hands on exhibits, but also some hands off exhibits that youll need to police your children away from as the switches and dials seem tempting. Great views from the control tower and interesting insight into this short era
So glad we drove out of our way to see Foynes. Great history! We learned a lot. Dont leave without an Irish Coffee.
We saw this museum on the way to Kerry and made a mental note to visit on way back. Very glad we did as this museum is great. Even if you only look at the website it is worth it as it is full of information and youll be guaranteed to learn something you had no idea about.Cost €28 for a family of four and the tour begins with a film about flying boat travel in a 40s cinema. Worth watching and not skipping. The displays throughout the museum are interesting and well done and the odd spelling mistake makes you smile that it has been done by very enthusiastic supporters. The replica Boeing Flying Boat makes you wish you had the chance to fly on it when it was such an adventure and a stylish thing to do.If you have kids make sure they go to the kids area before heading to the replica otherwise youll miss it and our kids loved doing the flight simulator. The hologram theatre showing you how they came up with Irish Coffee is worth it though it is cold in there! You can also tour the maritime museum and has a nice lookout with free telescopes to look over the area.At the end is a lovely cafe where you can try your own Irish Coffee or buy a souvenir.
