115 Charterhouse St, Barbican, London EC1M 6AA, El Dorado
Set in a Victorian-era building, this chic vintage pub with rooms is a 2-minute walk from Smithfield Market, a 4-minute walk from Farringdon tube station and a 9-minute walk from the Barbican Arts & Conference Centre.Elegant rooms offer free Wi-Fi, plus flat-screen TVs, desks, and tea and coffeemaking facilities. One adds a patio area, plus a free-standing copper bath. The restaurant features polished Victorian decor and focuses on classic British dishes. The bar serves a selection of draught beers.
I had a Sunday Roast at the Fox & Anchor after making a reservation at another restaurant and completely mixing up my timing. They saved the day! I like the decor, all the beautiful wood, and period touches.I was super basic and got the lemon and garlic half chicken which came with all the usual suspects – roast potatoes, carrots, parsnips, cabbage, sweet potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, and gravy. I planned to share with my partner but he decided to get a burger so I was on my own. I guess chivalry really is dead 😆I persevered and it was all so good. I was really impressed with the chicken which was juicy and well seasoned. Also had a cider, not sure which, but I enjoyed it.Service was prompt but not like hovering, which is how I like it. Would definitely return for food or just a nice comfy spot for a pint.
Great experience all thanks to our waiter Tim and the rest of the crew!
Wonderful experience and lovely service by our waiter Tim, what a lovely gentleman. Made our pub trip worth our while!
What a great find! Cozy historic pub near Smithfield market tucked away from the crowds. Fantastic food, service and ambiance. Sunday roast is the best!
Nice ambience. We just booked for drinks and enjoyed a celebratory bottle of fizz!
Had a lovely sunday at the fox and Anchor nice ambiance and friendly staff ,and people Tasty lunch will visit again very soon .
Just the right place to eat some good (even veganfood and feel the cozy pub vibes. Thank you so much, we had a really nice time!
Good food but was spoken to very rudely by the barman as we walked in. Who basically shouted at me for sitting at a table that they forgot to mark as reserved. Would have walked straight back out again if we weren’t so hungry. Will not be returning
Excellent comms and service on our booking and visit to the function room. Cocktails and food were great! 10/10 Would recommend.
Great find in the city for a Sunday lunch. Lovely food and staff. We were looked after by Alex (2and service from him and the team was great.
Good local pub.Good selection of drinks, but when we were out on Thursday about half of their ales and lagers were out.Nevertheless the usual mainstream drinks were on draft.Decent selection of whiskeys.Staff are friendly and attentive.
Great breakfasts served with a pint of Guinness for the husband, who said it was as good as he’s had in Ireland. Fantastic surroundings in a proper pub. Staff really friendly and welcoming, very much enjoyed the whole experience.
We had a great night! Fantastic food and service
Perfectly good pub with friendly staff and good drinks. Food is expensive, but what you should expect in this area of London.
We stayed in one of the 6 rooms at fox & anchor. We also dined a few times during our vacation. We cannot say enough good things - great location, 5 min walk to (2different underground stations. The food was delicious. We had the fish & chips and the burger. Highly recommend both - juicy and flavorful. The French fries were a late night snack for us after a couple of tiresome days. The room was outstanding. We stayed in the market suite and it is truly a suite. Tons of space, beautiful amenities a and a private outdoor area! The bed was the only complaint. It was a little stiff for my husband. But everything else was great. Lovely snacks and fully stocked fridge each night. We took advantage of the espresso machine each morning and of course, the copper tub.The staff was very friendly and welcoming. There is a large, narrow staircase to go up, so just note your luggage will need to be carried! We loved our stay - highly recommend!
Absolute highlight of our trip! The Market Suite was fantastic! Everything we ate downstairs was amazing (lamb pie, breakfast, omg), and the drinks offered were absurd, especially with Kristoff and the gals serving. Such a lovely and attentive crew.Location is perfect, easy to get to everything. Beautiful building, great food, wonderful staff! We had a blast there. ❤️
Pop! Pop! This place is lovely! Great atmosphere, beer at 7am, a faaat full English that made my family totter back into the streets fueled to start our holiday. But seriously the food was great & the place is charming with several nice tables available downstairs & up. Definitely worth a visit.
This is NOT how a pint of Guinness should look like. The head is ridiculously big. And with a price of £6.15 it was a proper rip off. I should of course have asked for a top up, but the bar was managed by two schoolgirls and I was not my usual self.
We stayed at the Fox and Anchor for five nights during our London adventures. The staff was very kind and helpful, and they stored our bags for us when we arrived early. Our room was nicely decorated and had AC (thank goodness). Unfortunately we were on the top floor in The Barbican room for 4/5 nights, which is an awful hike with a loaded suitcase up a very narrow staircase. Our room was pretty small, and had a very strong musty odor in the bathroom, but our stay was enjoyable overall.
A great haunt right off Smithfield. They do an incredible city boy breakfast and everything in between. We stopped in at midday on a Sunday and it was quiet. During the week the outside provides a nice place to drink during the summer.Previously we had stayed the night and they also have well appointed rooms. It is not like staying at the Rookery nearby, but it is a wholly different experience and they do not try to be the same.Definitely check out the Fox for fun times, any time!
Beautiful old pub, just a quick visit and a pint of Aspall as I was off to a party, but Ill be visiting again soon, hopefully.
Awesome Sunday Roast here tonight. Whole staff was great but Evaliina in particular was a dream. Thanks for a great welcome to London!
My colleagues and I had a phenomenal Sunday Roast and our server Evaliina was outstanding! Highly recommend and will be coming back.
Daniel is always great, fantastic interaction with customers from the get go.Makes you feel at home in a great great pub near the Barbican.Ill be back!
Charlie was excellent yesterday, always up for a laugh and to make sure he feels the customers are welcome, will definitely be back to visit him and the venue. Highly recommend visiting the venue
Daniel was a true lad in getting us settled in. Great location for walking around the city, and the veggie english breakfast plate was a nice choice for plant-based folks
Whilst this is a traditional London pub, I’m afraid it’s expensive and poor value for what you get. Also, the website menu prices are not correct and are less than the prices as charged and shown on the paper menus you are given. For instance, as of today, the website shows the price for the Chicken, mushroom & leak terrine starter as £11 whereas the actual price was &£12 and the Braised Ox tail & pea croquette starter (two small croquettesis £7.50 on the website whereas the actual price is £8. The apple crumble and ice cream is also £1 more in the actual paper menu. I suspect the web menu prices are also wrong for other items.I wouldn’t mind but the food portions were rather pathetic for the price.
I was looking for a traditional pub to rest for a bit, have a nice beer and enjoy hot pub food. This looked like just that spot.Had a roast as it was Sunday ☺️Not sure I ever tasted English roast before. Chose the beef roast it was quite tasty, the meat, the sauce and the potatoes. The only thing that was not ok was the “blue cheese” croquete, as it didn’t taste like blue cheese, it not even tasted like cheese, hence the 4 star. The waiter was friendly, he even guided me through my order, and the environment is exactly what you want to find in a English pub.Lovely tables, private rooms and very comfy chairs, hope I have the opportunity to return someday ☺️It was pricey, but maybe on price for and English roast in London. They have around 15 different taps, and have common stuff like Peroni, Estrella and Guiness
The fox has been a staple for me and my team over the past year. I really have to acknowledge the staff, particularly Agne, who goes out of her way to make this place fun and lively. She’s personal, friendly and makes this place feel like home! ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️
Due to Covid, we havent been in here for a meal for 3 years. The food is still as good as ever. So lovely to sit and eat in a place with such history. Old fashioned wooden clad booths.
Lovely pub with great choice of wine and beer in Barbican. Always friendly and polite staff. Kamila was very helpful when I came with my family for dinner
Incredible place to stay we are local to London in Battersea but a weekend without kids. The St Pauls room was lovely lots of space and amazing big roll top bath big shower and really comfy beautiful bed. The staff food and all the extras included made the stay delightful and I highly recommend. Perfect location for a walk to Brick Lane and Spittlefields or the other way to Covent Garden etc.
Classic pub, super homey and amazing staff. Tim (bartenderwas awesome and made my night. Definitely recommend
We loved the original features of this pub, including the sewing machine table, and fox hole! It was cozy and comfortable. The service was attentive without being intrusive. And the food was scrummy - good menu options and nice wine selection. And good beers.
Fantastic atmosphere, feel like a step back into the past. Great service from Agne who looked after us. The sharing platter is great, delicious scotch egg and fish goujons but would have been nice to have a bit of salad or green with it.
I live at the charterhouse, a few steps away from this quaint and atmospheric venue. I use the pub regularly, reason being, the staff are always welcoming, warm and friendly. The assistant manager , Agne is totally outstanding. I Often come after Sunday Lunch with a friend who is also a resident of the Charterhouse. She makes him feel so welcome , he insists I take him. He is 94 and she always makes sure he is looked after and feels important. Well done the fox and their entire team.
We were served by a lovely lady called Agne and she was absolutely superb. Made the night and the experience very special indeed.❤️❤️❤️Thank youu!
The rooms were brilliant. Shower and bath, both clean. Bed was comfy and I got a wonderful nights sleep. However, no vague indication of how much items from the minifridge/snack stash cost, making it uncomfortable to consider taking from them, lest you get charged with a sneaky and extortionate price for the item. - A price list on the back of one of the documents you get with the room would be nice for transparency.Breakfast was a bit of a nightmare unfortunately. The waiter (or kitchendidnt actually listen to our order preferences. - Eggs done incorrectly to the point where most were left untouched, toast was barely done, black pudding was hot, but not cooked. - Waiters demeanour from reception at the bar to the table service seemed almost entirely disinterested for the entire time. - We didnt exactly feel looked after in this department, which was a shame.
Rooms were excellent, staff seemed a bit confused about having paid in advance.. Breakfast wasnt an experience Id like to do again however. Food very undercooked and staff didnt really care. Shame as the place has loads of character and as I said the rooms were great. The stairs are quite steep and narrow so Id be careful with anything other than an overnight bag.
This lovely pub, located in the hotel of the same name, has a traditional, dark wood, cosy feel to it. The bar as you first enter is narrow with limited seating, but there is an additional room at the back and a dining room upstairs. The pub still has a Smithfield Market License, and therefore is open, and can serve alcohol, to hotel residents and non-residents from 7am. They also serve an excellent Full English Breakfast.Friendly staff, great selection of real ales & craft beers; this is a fabulous pub.
Came here yesterday and I had such a great time that I decided to write my first review. Music was great, I was also told about this app called Secret DJ by one of your staff members who was very helpful and very friendly, he served me very well and is a great bartender and an even better person. Can’t remember his name but he’s a shortish guy with glasses and a beard. Food was sooo good and the pub also had a very very good selection of spirits. It was so good seeing the staff working and smiling together, that’s the works off a great team. I’m definitely going to try and come as often as possible now
Lovely pub. Great atmosphere, good drinks on offer and the food was great (I had the burger and chips). Enjoyed the company of regular patron Alan (who has the best stories and is an absolute legendand the arrival of a dog was the icing on the cake. Would like to highlight the service from the wonderful Erika and Agne who made me feel very welcome and were both very helpful. Would definitely go back again!
Excellent pub, great food, small and intimate dining room with snugs, and a good little bar. One of the best.
The rooms here are beautiful, the team are so welcoming, especially Daniel who made us feel like VIPs for being there for our wedding. Food is delicious, location is perfect.
This is an excellent pub right near The Charterhouse and Smithfield market. Its not too far from St. Pauls. Its certainly worth a visit if touring around the area. There are some fantastic pubs in the area away from the main tourists ones near St. Pauls and this is definitely on the list. We had stopped by on a pub crawl in the area and really liked the building and also the fact it was off the beaten track. I would come back for a pint or few next time Im in the area.
Weve stayed twice and wouldnt stay anywhere else in London. Rooms feel really luxurious with everything youd expect from a top end hotel - safe, mini-bar, dressing gowns, tea and coffee. Bed was really comfy, lots of hot water for the beautiful bath and shower. But best of all, really quiet even in Central London. We had the 2 nights stay, breakfast, a 3 course evening meal and free gins - an absolute bargain!! And all the staff are lovely. Cant recommend highly enough.
Nice traditional English pub. Nice staff, good food. I loved the small rooms for small groups in the back.
Amazing pub & hotel! The rooms are really comfortable and very nicely designed. The pub itself is really nice too with a great menu. We felt very welcome by the staff who did everything to accommodate our early arrival after a long flight and were very helpful throughout the visit.
This pub should be haunted, not sure by who. It is delightful, a bit dark but wonderful, wander down to the back to see the rooms there. Staff are wonderful and look after you. A special place.
I booked one night there thinking it was an hotel, and once arrived, after one moment of surprise, i really enjoyed the place: nice pub with great choices of wine and beer, the room was great and you don t hear at all the noise from the pub (was on the last floor), and the breakfast perfect. A place to go for sure!
