FourKnocks Tomb - Tourist attraction in Drogheda, Ireland
This Tomb can only be visited if you get the key beforehand. A sign will tell you where you have to go (its about a mile away). Once you unlock the iron door, you can go into the Tomb. Its best if you bring a torch as it is pitch dark in there. On the walls you then can see interesting signs and symbols which very much remind of the symbols of the Maori and Aboriginals. As with all these tombs, they are in very energy-laden areas, very quiet, very peaceful. The great thing is that the Tomb is not spoiled with a tourist centre and a huge car park. It just is there in the middle of a field.
Fun little stop to explore. It was lovely as it was not busy with tourists but you do need to get a key to go inside.
Get the key from Mrs White - youll need to leave a €20 deposit - and travel about a mile to the tomb, but what awaits you is a gorgeous neolithic tomb that gives a real impression of what it must have been like to be there in the distant past.
This is bare minimum experience as little to no funding. You need to call a local house to get the key to tomb. But its a genuine part of Irish history thats thousands of years old.Great view on top of the tomb.
Lovely views. Go on a weekday and youll likely have the place to yourself.Get the key. Directions are on a sign. But to get to the care taker head to the T junction.Take a left and the its a right in anout 100 meters (more kind of straight on reallyas the main road turns sharply to the left. Then 7th on the right. About a mile.
Hidden gem! Circle mound with incredible carvings. Larger interior than many I saw this trip. Has had some reconstruction as was originally fiber/thatch roof(?). Must get key from owner to go inside and need deposit which will be returned after key is returned. Can climb up this one, which gives some beautiful views.
It’s the most magical place in Dublin, you can see seven different counties from the top, it’s a quiet but lovely area and would totally recommend a walk there. Sometimes the door is open sometimes it’s closed
Unlike what other reviewers wrote, IT IS accessible! You only need to get the keys for the entrance door from Mr. Fintan White before 6pm, he lives just a mile from the Tomb. Dont miss it, as its extremely interesting inside. Ive been to countless Neolithic sites all over Europe and the carvings here truly stand out.
whopper spot for a sesh. feels like im the teenager in a horro movie coz jason might be lurkin around the gaff. spooky, risky but lovely im a poet btw, yup
Unfortunately we couldnt go as it is currently closed until further notice. Still giving it 5 stars though
Highly recommended. Irish culture and heritage.
A simple yet very well preserved neolithic tomb. You currently cannot go inside the tomb but the outside is freely accessible without charge. Stunning views on a sunny day.
Locked up . Keyholder about a mile awayIt was a joke
Amazing place Especially on a nice day. This should be made into a tourist attraction the only unfortunate thing at the moment you can not go inside to see the art. There is a working farm next to and around this site, and no need to enter it as there is a pathway for you to come and go. Please be respectful to the site and bring away any rubbish you may have . If you come by car,try keep you car parked well in at the side of the road as machinery can pass. I would like to thank the local caretaker for a fantastic job they do
Great spot with 360 degree view of the valleys
Over 5000 years old. Superb views to the north and south east.
Fourknocks is a Passage Chamber Tomb built about 5000 years ago. It is located 10 miles southeast of Newgrange between Ardcath in County Meath and the Naul in County Dublin. The name Fourknocks may be from the Irish Fuair Cnocs meaning Cold Hills or maybe Four Cnocs is a reference to the Four Tombs (Four Hills). There is faraway from the main road, no parking around. Very small place, unfortunately closed for public.
Second time at four knocks, its still not open.I understand that its closed because of covid but Why is it closed When Newgrange, Oldcastle court Cairns, bective and mellifluous Abbey are open? Its a piece of our heritage and its still being withheld
Without throngs of tourists you can absorb the wonderful atmosphere and respect the wonderful ancestors.
Stunning Rock Art in a 5000 year old passage tomb... Free entry, huge central chamber. Bring along a torch to get a good look. Ring the Whites who live nearby and kindly act as keyholders ... A gem.
Definitely worth your while, you need to collect keys to gain access, the keys can be collected from a house about a mile from the site.
Fantastic for a short stop off on your way through Meath. Get the key, walk to the tomb, take in the history.
Beautiful small tomb which is very quiet. Noy many tourist so a great place to spend time
Quick to visit, but so worth the visit.. Enjoyed the adventure of finding a house to get the key
Beautiful ancient part of old Ireland, r.i.p. to all who rest there x
Fourknocks (Coldhillsmegalithic monument is small and easily overlooked. It is only 10 miles or so from its bigger cousins, Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. But size doesnt matter its age is around 5000 years ago and it is beautifully decorated on the inside. Its alignment is similar to Newgrange. Well worth a visit, make sure you get the key and go inside, access instructions on site. The rock art is beautiful and up close it has a wonderful goosebumps effect, but for me you have to climb to top of mound and take in the spectacular view. The greatest view though is at dusk and watching the stars appear! If you swipe pictures you will see the view north across Fingal towards the misty mythical Cooley Mountains. The small village of Naul nearby is well worth a visit for a coffee in the Seamus Ennis centre. Note picture of inside tomb is not mine.
Loved it. The key is a mile up the road though.
Was such a cool spot.. loved the stone engraving and the fact you can just get the key and spend yer own tome there..
My favorite passage tomb, I have been there many times, on most occasions with no other people. You can enjoy this place on your own, spend there as much time as you like. Feel the energy of Fourknocks.
In one way I was loathe to leave a review, in case it turns the place into a hotspot. A private viewing of a Megalithic tomb, but more importantly a beautiful peaceful place with stunning views across County Meath and in the other direction across North County Dublin and as far as the Dublin & Wicklow mountains. I spent an undisturbed hour here just soaking it all up. ❤️
Nice little passage tomb that you can get the key for at a near by house.
Spooky and cool. Have to get the key about a km from where the tomb is. Typical narrow roads here with almost nowhere to park, which makes it worth the adventure.
This is a Passage Tomb from about 2500 to 3000 years ago. It is a pear shape interior and you can stand up once inside. It is locked a d a key is available from nearby. The path to it is smooth and level. This pre dates Tara and is well worth a visit.
Worth a visit if you are in Dublin. Its less than an hours drive from Dublin. The monument is more believed to be made between the 3000BC - 2000BC. Beautiful place to be for a small drive. Not only the tomb, but also the panoramic view is so beautiful. They key for getting inside the tomb can be obtained from a nearby house at 20 euro deposit which will be returned at the time of handing over of it.
Arrived too late to get the key. We will make sure we are there earlier next time
Definitely worth a visit to this ancient site. Key to tomb can be picked up in local house at a deposit of €20 which is refundable on return .
A true Hidden Gem in The beautiful Boyne valley. Collect the key at Whites house down the road and enter into the passage tomb. Beautiful Hyroglifics. It can be difficult to find so it might be worth hiring a local guide for the day to make the most of your time.
Very unique ancient megalithic site. This is huge. To me more fascinating than Newgrange, and access much easier. I am not sure of this being a tomb. Maybe this was a later use. We may speculate what it was originally built for. Inside it is probably easy to fit up to 100 people. There are several chambers and most have intriguing ancient art above them. We are led to believe this was a cairn like Newgrange and Knowth, but to me this is much more like a large court cairn that was either open or had a thatched covering. There is a key deposit, I think €10, and there are instruction there of where to get the key a couple of km away.
You need to arrange to get a key for the tomb from a local living nearby and get in there yourself. No guide nor staff there. The key keeper (sorry i forgot his namewas very helpful.
Grand place. The key keeper is a bit hard to find but follow the instructions on the notice board and youll find her house. €20 deposit gets you the key to the door! Imagine that! A 5000 year old passage tomb that you can let yourself into - complete with megalithic carvings and all. Only in ancient Eire.
Another stunning 5000 year old passage tomb. Everyone should see this!
Brilliant
It was well worth the mile drive to get the key to the steel door from the caretaker (directions are at the site). Private viewing of a prehistoric tomb? Incredible...and priceless.
Always a pleasure to return to see my favourite megalithic tomb, new key holder now and a deposit required
great historical & tourist attraction well worth a visit .we got a horse & carriage ride from seamus ennis centre in naul to four knocks return . we had our lunch in the lovely cafe on return to naul .a must do
Very cool if you are interested in very deep history
Finding the keys to our heritageThis place is off the N2 road near Ardcath in Co. Meath. It is close to Newgrange. It is a small 5000 year old passage grave that is really well preserved.you will need to collect a key from a neighbour for a small deposit to get in. Directions to Mr White are at the site.Inside is a cross shaped passage with 3 alcoves of carved waved stonework.this is definitely worth a trip if you have a few hours to spare and are into Irelands neolithic past.#ramblingstampcollectors
Well worth visiting if youre in the area and like megalithic tombs. This one has a concrete roof which I found a bit off putting. But the result is a spacious albeit dark space. Get the key first. Go back to the time junction, turn left and then take the first right, carry on about 1.5km and stop at the sixth house on your right. Theyll give you a key for a deposit
Quiet and secluded, beautiful views all the way to the sea
Hidden gem, great view from Mournes to Sugar Loaf. You can obtain a key to enter the megalithic tomb from a nearby resident, contact details are at the site.
