Fossil Ledges - Park and Garden in Thessalon, Canada
What an adventure to get there. But views make it worth the effort. Stunning l views and a great end destination.
Really unique place with obviously great views of the lakeshore. Recommend 4x4 with some clearance. We were fine in my Explorer Sport although expect some scratches, tons of dust and mud :This is a cool adventure if youre a brave fudgy tourist!
Great relaxing ride, to a beautiful place.
This place has a very unique shore line. Many fossils trapped in the stone shelves. Super cool to see!
Wildly rough ride, but well worth the view and ability to see so many marine fossils!
Super cool spot lots of fossils
Difficult to get there but once you are there it will be worth it !!Great view!
Lived up to all the talk. Great place
We made it in a 2020 all wheel drive equinox. The ride was slow and we would have stopped at the beaver swamps because it looked bad however a side by side stopped us and said it was only 14 inches deep. We made it. The entire drive was all like sheet rock. There is no soft bottoms or ruts. There is holes and busted up rocks, just no real ruts. It took us close to an hour to drive 6 miles. It was nice drive and would highly recommend it. The lady at the tourist info place told us she wouldnt recommend driving our equinox out to the ledges but we did. Its probably not passable just after rain.
The fossil Ledges was a great visit. There are literally fossils in every nook and cranny of the rocks here. The scenery looks like something out of a Viking movie. Very surprising to find a landscape like this in Michigan! We had to park our cars partway (my truck was in the shopand hike the 3 miles to the actual "beach". Easy hike; you just need to move over for ATVs every once in a while.
Very pretty to see!
Awesome place to visit! We took our Jeep there. Mostly gravel road but the last few miles in is definitely a good trail ride. It was easy to find a ton of fossils at the ledges. Beautiful views.
Definitely a rough road in. We made it in a Honda passport. All wheel drive but not super high clearance.
A great place to take the family, a semi lifted vehicle is needed to access the location by land. My family has also visited the ledges by boat and still had a great time. The road to the ledges parallels a beaver pond, so the water levels on the road can be raised. We were able to make it fine in a Yukon, I wouldnt suggest taking a car Ever. Tons of amazing fossils to see and a great spot to wear out kids and pets with a beautiful view of the water.
Very cool spot to explore and see fossils in the rocks. The last 2 miles are very challenging and slow going. Definitely need a vehicle with a higher clearance, but didnt need to use 4wd at all to get out there. Lots of puddles to drive through!
Beautiful shoreline and a great place to find fossil rocks
Easy trail, great place to have lunch. We stop here almost every time were on Drummond.
Tricky trail to get there. Definitely need a vehicle with clearance, but spectacular views once you get out there.
Easy to get to. Awsome to swim when water is low
This was an incredible place to visit. The water is a clear aqua blue and the fossils are amazing.
So beautiful. You walk out into the water on rock ledges and look back on the shoreline. The shore is all rock with fossils trapped inside them. Really cool.
I cant say enough awesome things, you best have a high clearance vehicle, no your Subaru wont make it. Oh beware the biting flies and mosquitoes. And I swam to Canada 🇨🇦
beautiful sight . rough roads ...was awesome
Water was down enough to walk the ledges. Simply beautiful. Exquisite. Pristine.
Awesome memory! The ride out and back was challenging 😄
We got through easily in a Toyota RAV4 front wheel drive, taking it slowly. Lovely spot and we found an amazing 7 ft rock monolith!
WOW! What a drive to get back to this awesome spot. The locals will tell you can get there in mini van, but they are wrong. You will want at least an SUV. A 4x4 is not needed but highly recommended. While walking the shore line I discovered a ~7ft tall rock stack that was great to take photos with. Can you find this fossil rock stack for your self!?
If youre on Drummond Island, and have 4wd for the wetter days, you HAVE TO SEE
Absolutely amazing! Last year water covered all the ledges! This year we walked them from one end to the other!!A must see!!!
Cool experience at the end of a off road trail.. okay, they say they are county roads, but trust me when I say, I think you want a solid 4 wheel drive off road vehicle to do it.There are fossils by the hundreds or thousands and its a great place to swim, if you like cold water. ;).It is a great experience!!!
Worth the drive. 2wd pickup works just fine for the offroad trails. Fun finds hiking East along the ledges.
I’m only giving this 4 stars because I couldn’t pass the entire trail to get there. I was very close but was stopped by a flooded trail. Both sides either had water or dense bush and trees. We took a Honda Pilot. You need a higher clearance vehicle or an ATV. Gorgeous trails and chances to see many wildlife on the trail. Grouse and deer. Usually a few random ATV or trucks sharing a smaller trail at at times. Not easy territory to navigate. Lots of rocks and Dolomite/limestone on trail. Locals are very kind in this area in general. Definitely the gem of Huron. Please leave these trails and fossils as they were when you came. Only leave footprints behind. Enjoy the Alvars on your way in. Flooded trail picture attached.
Neat stretch of rock ledges you can walk along and observe fossils embedded in the rocks.
Most of the way from the start of the island is asphalt road. Once you get to the gravel it eventually turns into uneven rock and had some moderately sized puddles from the marshes. We took our Chevy 2500 pick through it all just fine. At the final destination you can see Canada across and the Rock Ledges are pretty meat. Great time!
Went there in early April. Dont try to reach that place without a proper off-road vehicle... The journey to reach that place is almost worth more than the place itself, the landscapes are amazing, the nature is breathtaking... Superb place!
Visited on Holloween day 2020. Nothing spooky about it but very beautiful scenery. Had to break through 3/8" thick ice on most of the standing water along "road" at 10am and 38 degrees. 2" lift 2018 Silverado quad cab with stock tires and in 4x4 auto mode made it no problem. Parking area would be tight with more than 6 trucks or 8 jeeps. Most notable wild life seen was rough grouse. Great little relaxing, not too technical drive to an out of the way lunch spot with a view.
Road is rough. We only saw 3 others the entire last 5 miles. Woo.
Fossil ledges was awesome!! We drove our Polaris Ranger to this and packed a lunch and our dog.Spent an hour there taking pictures and video. Trail going in was muddy and lots of standing water due to the rain the night before. Plan ahead its rocky in some parts and water some spots were 12 inches deep, but you can do in a higher clearance vehicle I wouldnt take a car back there after a good rain. Utv, jeep ,pickups a good option....plan ahead if your going alone...going with a buddy or two would be better incase of a break down. Worth the trip!!!!!!!!
Four out of five great lakes choose Michigan for a good reason. The Fossil Ledges are stooped shelves of history hidden away on a 6 mile hike, easily pried from the water for anyone brave enough to enter the water to purloin for themselves. Its a magical experience of experimentation and observation met with raw physical skill to manufacture an exhilarating, rewarding endeavor in archeology. Id give anything to be there again.
Very cool place. Heavly wooded road to get there. Reccomend a 4x4 to get through, especially after the rain. Fun drive! The Ledges were covered when went there(water level very highbut we saw some amazing views. Worth the drive!
Tried to get there, but no success because: 1. There is no actual on-road directions, street signs or road signs to get there ( We had directions from the islands website, and they gave street names, but there are no signs on the road). 2. The road the way it is is absolutely hard to make through with large vehicles ( Trucks, ATVs, etc. Which means, you would need a off-road vehicle). Also, if you actually want to get there, make sure youre going on a day where there has been no rain in the past or current, so you can make it there ( there were a ton of standing puddles when I went. ( All of the travels there were made on a 4wd chevy truck ).
Honestly the best part is the drive, particularly at dusk. Pretty cool how far out you can walk and just how many fossils are in the rock. Enjoyed the late summer sunset!
Awesome place, literally on the edge of the world. Youll need to take a 4x4 in. We did not, and hiked the 6 mile round trip. Not bad, actually. The fossil ledges are beautiful with clear, clean water. Worth the trip, either way.
Really cool location off of the upper peninsula of Michigan on Drummond Island. Gets kinda chilly in mid November so make sure you dress warm. The off road trails are a blast but very wet this time of year. Mud holes are filled with water and if it is cold enough they will be covered in ice.
Definitely a bit of an adventure to get to and will want 4 wheel drive. The water was still pretty high when we went but it was still an awesome experience. Crazy number of rocks with fossils of all types from the ocean. Would definitely check it out if you can and will definitely make a trip back!
This is neat to see, fun to get too by off road, although ledges are under water right now.
Was definitely worth the drive. Glad we had a Jeep. Fun time.
Very cool place to check out the fossils. Not car friendly to access, will need a higher clearance vehicle.
Awesome fossils but you will need a 4WD to get back to it. Road is about 7 miles back in. 5 miles of that it 4-5" rocks, ledges, and Beaver dams. Took me 3.5 hours in my Jeep but was worth it.
Great spot to eat lunch and spot fossils in many rocks. Difficult to access without ATV, map and GPS, as trails are unmarked.
