Fort Wellington National Historic Site - Historical landmark in Brockville, Canada
Interesting place to visit. Make sure theyre open before you go. It seems kind of random.
Amazing place with very friendly staff. Kids loved it!
An amazing site, well worth the visit.
"Soldiers" at the gates very knowledgeable in the history of the fort. A self guided tour with staff in period costumes able to provide interesting information about the lives of the soldiers, their wives and children. Many very interesting artifacts.
Its a neat little fort and we enjoyed the experience. Im only giving it a 3 star rating because a lot of the site was shut down due to an insufficient amount of employees. The whole top floor of the building was blocked off and I was disappointed. I was looking forward to exploring the top floor of the fort. The employees were friendly and knowledgeable. Most of them were patient with kids. There was one woman who was making hats for the kids and she was just rotten. She was not suited for the position at all but Im guessing due to the shortage, having her there was better than losing another part of the experience.If/when they open that top floor, I will revisit and adjust my rating to reflect the whole experience. As a side note, this site is listed as one of the top 10 most haunted in Ontario. I didnt see the ghost but I wasnt onsite during the cannon demonstration. If youre into that kind, it would be cool to see the fallen soldier..
If you drive to Ottawa along the 401, here is a great stop to relax and find some history heritage. Then one hour drive to Ottawa.
Not much to see, but definitely need to pass and check this place out.
It is small nice place to visit an old field. The staff go for lunch break 12 to 1pm.
Kids really enjoyed visiting.
This is a wonderful place to bring your family and friends. Spend the day by the st. Lawrence and stroll along the bike path. The historical fort offers many activities to indulge in. They have a gift shop with all kinds of trinkets to purchase to help you remember your visit. This place is a must see when visiting the area!!
July 2022.It’s only open Thursday to Monday from 10h -16h; hence I can only glimpse from the park and outside the fence. However, the writing outside the visitor center provides a short and brief background to the fort as well as the battle of windmill which led me to read more from other sources to better understand the location story. As it seems, Prescott is where it started between the upper and lower Canada conflict and the battle of windmill ( 2 km awaywas the start the the 30 year fights which lead to confederation of Canada.
Just be aware they close noon to one for staff lunch because of staff shortage. Length of visit was Just right for our 4 year old grandson.
Staff are dressed in period clothing and knowledgeable about the history of the fort.Unfortunately due to Covid only parts of the Fort are open to the public. Lots of parking available for RVs and travel trailers.
Was very accommodating and friendly most of all the tour guide (Benhe was awesome and so good with the kids
A fun place to stop into, not necessarily a lot to see, but it is also not very expensive so it is a decent value.
Grandson had an excellent time and the Guides were great!!
Fort Wellington (1812at Prescott, Ontario, was built to support British naval operations on the St. Lawrence River. In early 1813 British troops and militia crossed the frozen river to launch a successful raid on Ogdensburg, New York.
Its a historical landmark what else can I say... besides Fort Wellington having the absolute coolest and best Defense Fence around
We even got a history lesson on the trip. Would go back for sure
Will be going back as my last visit was brief due to late arrival and they were closing everything up. But the woman that came around to talk to my wife and I gave a great historical insight into the past with what took place. Which made our experience although short a fun and educational time.
A small but interesting fort. Its good to know the history from the staff there. They are friendly and welcoming. Do check out the other attractions like the parks next to the river and family owned restaurants!
We had a amazing time learning . Also, must say that the employees that were amazing my little girl has some sensory issues with costumes and both the employees went above and beyond for her to make her feel comfortable
Fort Wellington is located on the shores of the St Lawrence river in Prescott. It is an interesting historical landmark that was built to defend our British colony from the Americans. Inside the fort you can see the barracks, the armory and they offer special tours and demonstrations in period dress so you can imagine you are living in those days. I enjoyed going there and think you would too.
Interesting fort but covid regulations slightly soured the experience. No visitor center, no exhibits, and for some reason the flags at the fort were not being flown. No one can catch covid from a flying the forts flag.On the other hand, the entry fee was $0, the site was interesting along with its history, with the caponniere being unique for Canadian forts.Worth the visit even with covid.
First we came when it was closed - off service Tuesdays and Wednesdays - so we learned their schedule (10am-4pmand next time came the right day and time. Entrance was free. This time we were lucky to visit it on a special day - when there were costumized people, who were telling us all the story about the fort and its inhabitants. Plus we had a little presentation of the rifles shooting. Our kid got an activity book at entry, and at exit he got a sort of a soldiers medallion as a prize for completing it. Overall, the place is small and normally we would pass trough it very quickly, but with all the story telling and chatting we hanged there much longer then expected. 🙂 Thank you guys, you are amazing. 👏
Fun little historic site to visit. The staff seemed really into it, so we had lots of fun asking lots of questions and learning a whole bunch about life back then.
Great staff. Nice place for a quick walk back through history.
this awesome place is frequented by 100s of families year roundthe museum is fabulous for young and oldplease hurry to finish renos so we can all.come adventure
Great site to stop at to learn about life in the 1800s. The interior of the Fort is currently closed and you can longer go inside due to Covid 19 restrictions. But the grounds are well maintained and staff are informative
Very cool historical site. We had a quick tour, the guide was very informative. Cool little place to see. During covid it was free to enter. Bower normally there is a small fee.
This is a very cute little fort, also free, would recommend
We have driven past this for quite some time and today we finally stopped in. Our guide Lianne was very friendly and knowledgeable. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour. The Fort is a very nice place to visit. We will most definitely be back after COVID when we can explore inside the forts buildings!
Nice place, historical lesson for young children, great workers, great place to bring children and great for birthdays
Fort Wellington National Historic Site is a historic military fortification located on the north shore of the St. Lawrence River at Prescott, Ontario. The military fortification was used by the British Army, and the Canadian militia for most of the 19th century, and by the militia in the 20th century, until 1923, when the property was handed over to the Dominion Parks Commission, the predecessor to Parks Canada. The fort was earlier named a National Historic Site of Canada on January 1920.Built in the midst of the War of 1812, the British commissioned the construction of the fortification in 1813 to protect the head of the Gallop Rapids in the St. Lawrence. Completed in 1814, the fort was abandoned by the British shortly after the war, although it formally remained the property of the British Board of Ordnance. The British commissioned the construction of a new fort, on top of the earthwork of the first fort in 1838, during the onset of the Rebellions of 1837–1838. Completed in 1839, the fort was used by the British Army, and the Canadian Militia. The fort was used by the British until 1863, when British units left the area, making the militia the forts sole occupant. The militia continued to use the fort until 1923, when it handed over the property to the Dominion Parks Branch, the predecessor to Parks Canada. As a National Historic Site, Fort Wellington operates as a historical open-air museum.
Nice little fort good for a family outing. Located in a great town to explore history of the st Lawrence and the war of 1812
Beautiful place.. The view is very nice and right by the river. You can see huge ships passing by.
GET THE GUIDED TOUR! it was great! Very informative
An old, wooden, grassy roof fort interesting because of the grass, his historical position towards the United States. Only a river separate USA and Canada. On the pictures, its not visible but the fort is in the shape of a star. If youre not interest by history or wooden fort, its also a nice place to make a stop on the road between Ottawa and Toronto or Montreal and Toronto.
Its a historic, visually appealing location with great sight lines of downtown Prescott. Great for kids with lots to do, such as dress up, games, and activities to do inside the blockhouse. Dressed up staff with help guide you through.
Nice place to visit. Grounds are very well taken care of. The staff and volunteers are super!! Great for anyone to learn a bit about our history. Definitely worth at least a couple visits!!
Enjoyed our visit! The guides were polite, well informed and answered all of our questions. Recommend the fort and staff for everyone. Costumes and props for all ages.Small enough to just make an afternoon of it. Admission very reasonable
History right in front of u. This fort was build in the 1600,s to fight back the American invasion. (Cant blame them)! Its like walking back in time. Check out the underground sniper barracks. Its cool in the summer heat. Think back to how many men walked down in to that chamber. The stones are still the same. You can feel and sense the action, the shooting, the death of the men who protected the country from the other side.
Celebrated Canada Day with a free tour and demonstrations. Dug up artifacts are very interesting and being able to walk amongst the barracks was great.
I took my kids to Fort Wellington with a group of home schoolers for a planned tour. We had 30 families and they put us into four groups and had all four groups do the educational tour at different spots at the same time. It is not a big fort but everything ran very smoothly. The activities were interesting and well-planned. There was a wide age range of kids from toddler to about 16 years old but they managed to make it work for all those ages. The staff were all very friendly and helpful; our guide (Emilywas knowledgeable and enthusiastic and was great with the kids.Very clean site, well-maintained (they were doing maintenance while we were there and it had very little impact on our enjoyment of the site). Our tour was 2 hours long and then we were free to go back and check out the fort on our own which we spent another half hour doing. There are kid-sized uniforms to wear in the barracks and plenty of interesting details in the rooms on the main floor of the blockhouse. As it is a small fort, I wouldnt plan to spend a long time there, especially if you are with small kids. You could do it all in under an hour. There is a bit more inside but we didnt get to it. There is also a small gift shop. The hill and lawn outside were great for a picnic.
A great little fort though my favourite part was the visitors centre and the recovered shipwreck housed there. Its definitely worth stopping into if youre near the area. Ask lots of questions! And its kind of interesting to go down the street a bit to find the Windmill where the Battle of the Windmill with Nils Von Schultz took place.
Small historic site dating back to the War of 1812. Excellent restoration to mid 19th century period with a fort guard made up of summer students. We were there to participate in their (hopefullyannual Loyalist Days event.
Lived in Prescott whole life and still amazing to see inside the fort and reanactments
Really well done exhibits and knowledgeable interpretive staff.
Interesting fort construction, sad staff lack of interaction. Wouldnt demonstrate on toys (they sellwork, and too busy visiting with each other instead of explaining the unique aspects of the rooms. Maybe they forgot what they are paid to do?Please put individual staff into key rooms/buildings to help explain key points.Missing unique xplorer tags.Only worth a stop if you are in area.
Super friendly staff very willing to interact with kids and answer questions. Relaxed atmosphere and plenty of artifacts (wooden toys, costumes, etc.to touch. The displays are informative. This was a spontaneous stop and it was worth it!
