Fort St. Joseph National Historic Site in Thessalon
Description
Privilege
Welcome to my house
We arrived pretty late as the gate closes at 5:30pm. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We got a brief introduction of the history, visited the fort, and got a map to aid us to the next sightseeing place. Google map search doesnt work well on the island.
MoreI liked the welcoming and all the nice explanations! It is an experience that I recommend. They are renting also bikes . Thank you and I wish you many visitors.
More1812 Era fort. Great view of the lake from the hill top were the fort sits. Its a ruin now, but well maintained. There is a vistors center with a small musem. The staff is quite knowable and there are often displays from that time period. When we visited they had a black smith on sight. Well worth the drive if you like Canadian history.
MoreGreat place to explore!
Beautiful ,Quiet ,and historical place. Talk to Mike hes very informative
Very nice recently redone I havent exhibit on weekends they were baking bread today on Sundays small admission fee to the Old fort ruins well worth the money
MoreThe most helpful staff!! Great program
Great historical experience one of the forts the Americans did burn down while we occupied their Fort.
MoreThis is a very nice place to visit. It hasnt been rebuilt into a big production, but rather is a preservation of ruins atop a beautiful hill overlooking the water. It gives a glimpse of what life was like in the early 1800s and interesting history of the area. I enjoy visiting here when I can.
MoreIt is magical. Staff are very helpful and informative.
Very interesting to see. My son loved all the war stuff
A little out of the way, but worth the drive, enjoyed learning the history of this fort, and friendly staff.
MoreIt was closed.
Drove down only to find out the road is gated and locked. Very disappointed.
Enjoyable time.
Great experience, very nice staff 🙂.
A very interesting and educational place to visit.
Excellent staff (helped me with a minor first aid situationand the info, ruins and trails are all well worth the drive!
MoreBeautiful Island,but not much open.
The guide was very knowledgeable and the Fort ruins were interesting. The museum was a great history lesson. The gift shop was closed the day we were there as it was a Wednesday late in the season. It was a nice 2 and a half hours.👍👍
MoreVery interesting exhibit
Staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and the history of the fort was interesting. Although the ruins are mostly just stone foundations and very little remains, the site is charming and the views overlooking the water spectacular
MoreAmazing afternoon activity. Wonderful view of Lake Huron with so much historical significance. Loved it and will definitely be back!
MoreThe wax figures and artifacts are awesome. I wish there was more of the ruins than there are, but a great place to visit and picnic
MoreBeautiful
For a history buff like me this is a must.
A little out of the way but still a hidden gem. Park nearby overlooks the water
Well done interpretive center. Good archeology, but watch out for the poison ivy. Mowed, so it sneaks underfoot at trail edges.
MoreGreat little piece of pre-canadian history!
Loved the freedom of roaming and learning on our time. Thank you for the knowledge
MoreVery interesting. We were there on Canada Day so they had free admission and extra activities. Long drive off the main road and lots of walking when you get there but it was worth learning the history of this fort!
MoreInteresting and informative. I would visit again to se what I might have missed.
So interesting!
War of 1812
Well maintained and a wonderful view into the history of the colonial times. This museum gives great care in providing credit to all people who were part of the history (from the first peoples to the British soldiers.). Beautiful site. Has direct connection to America’s independence.
MoreVery interesting bit of Canadian history
Lovely place to visit! Staff was friendly and helpful! Great info posts and wonderful photo opportunities.
MoreAn excellent slice of Canadian history right in our back yard, clean bathrooms and friendly staff
MoreFun little adventure for our young family ☺️
There is a fee for adults to enter. There are some ruins to see with a great view of the lake. Not many ruins and they are essentially the foundations. The main one featured is a chimney. Finally there is a small museum which was ok.
MoreVery cool if youre into history! Dont be afraid to ask questions of a Parks Canada guide! Its only open during the month of June and its quite a drive from sault ste Marie, but worth it if you like history and old architecture.
MoreParks Ontario . . . Visit Ft St Joe . . . National historic site . . .80 km round trip in pissing rain off Hwy 17 . . . Not open! 🤡Parks Ontario . . . Sharp as a bowling ball . . .
MoreVery interesting historical site.
Fort St. Joseph was awesome! I love history and to experience this was something I will cherish for a long time.
MoreFantastic historic site. Its really off the beaten path, but visitors are rewarded with a rich history, and excellent visitors center with a video theatre and inside exhibits, and of course the ruins. I learned that the fort was abandoned after Mackinac Island was captured.
MoreThis is a great place to learn about the history of the war of 1812 and of the events of Canadas exploration.Friendly and knowledgeable staff.Good scenic area.
MoreGreat history, beautiful scenery, awesome wildlife. An overall good outing for adults and kids alike.
MoreCharging admission to an open field with a few stone ruins doesnt seem like value. On the bright side, a spectacular view of the St Marys River.
MoreGreat stop on the road trip, fantastic staff are warm, welcoming and knowledgeable.
