This is a historic site that once held slaves, and later prisoners. Sadly, the place is now in ruins. And dare I say, that could be part of its charm in exploring a world that once was.When visiting, theres no place to buy a ticket — at least not one I came across as I visited on a Saturday. However, you should definitely get guided tour of the sprawling building complex. With two others, we paid GHS 30.00 to a local who gave us complete access to the building and a "guided tour." I say "guided tour" because you can never completely trust everything you hear as a lot could be hearsay, and some facts stretched into hyperboles. Nevertheless, getting access to explore the building, its kitchen, dungeons, and quarters could be the best part. And man, the complex is huge, with about five or more different courtyards!Plus, seeing the development of the fishing harbor in the distant could be a hallowing reminder of what was not only lost in the past, but what could be in the future.I wish you enjoy the place as much as I did.

A popular landmark in Accra and Ghana as a whole.This place can’t be taken out of Ghana’s story or history.This fort was built by the British. The town where the fort is located got the name James town because of the relationship between the fort and Town.

Run-down and controlled by touts demanding money. Accra has so many interesting sites a foreigner could visit, but most places we visited were in need some care and, more importantly, police to shoo-away the local touts demanding money. We did not feel welcome here because of what I think were phony demands to have our passports registered at the visitors center, if such a thing exists.

I kept looking at the white people and wondering how they could be ok with posing for pictures in the tiny cells their ancestors did so much evil to mine... Anyway every black person must go and experience this. How the world sees us has a lot to do with this place.

The James fort is not accessible. Its locked down. So all youll get to do here is walk down to the fishing village.

James Fort is more of a historical site in Accra - Ghana where colonial masters settled, and managed their slave trade business as they operated a prison there. The name which has been adopted by the neighbourhood giving it the name Jamestown.It fort which was Started in 1673 by the British colonial masters. Captured slaves at the time of slave trade were kept in James Fort Prison as they waited to be traded.After the era of slave trade, the James Fort prison was still used by the governments of the country as a prison until 2008.The building is now decaying and there isnt much to see there other than the nature of the building, the cells, and the wonders of sorrow as you think back and try to imagine the wait and the transit.Its good to go with family and loved ones as you learn and feel together, the sorrows of our forefathers who were victims of slavery.

Wow, what a diverse cultural environment and people with beautiful culture . That is a predominant fishing community with a very unique way of life.This people are from the Ga tribe and very good in trading.The usher fort and James fort are all located here. This is the place where one can get smoked fish, dried fish and fried fish.

Although this place holds a lot of historical significance in Ghana due to the Fort James, it has other interesting attractions.It is a well known seaside fish market where one can get fresh fish and other seafood to purchase directly from the fishermen and other fish mongers.One is able to see the many locally crafted fishing boats arriving with their catch. I come here often to buy any type of fresh sea fish while I watch the beauty of the sea itself and the interesting lifestyle of the fishing folks that is neck deep in folklore. There is a lot to learn about the history of the fishing occupation from the people. As a researcher, it is also a nice setting for research on food safety and nutrition.

The way the place has been preserved is amazing.It lets you remember past culture in the present.

Its about the oldest city in Accra and I looked forward to it. I visited there with my German friend and the people were welcoming. We had someone who offered to take us around. We saw the boats and beach and people!The area doesnt look pleasant (asides the lighthouse areabut it was great to see people live lives different from mine.The people there fish for a living. Its just a great experience. Just for the sake of visiting and history sake, I recommend you visit James Fort. I also call it Jamestown.

The government is currently renovating the grounds of James Fort a part of history will be cleared leaving the light house and maybe the bay.

Not currently a museum. Appears the roof was burnt/ recently on fire. Aggressive Hawking (selling). No enterence found to explore fort. Local individuals mentioned that due to James fort being a prison, it was left decrepit. Do not recommend visiting.

It is not properly maintained.

Great day of fun activities during the annual Charley Wortey festival. Seriously crowded, standing room only..

Fun places to walk around....see different arts all around, the beach n the Lighthouse

Its an ancient setting belonging to the then British government. There is a park there that serves as event grounds for a lot of musicians in Ghana including the biggest- Shatta Wale

This is an amazing building and there is so much history, they need funds to share it with others.

It was closed :-( with a sign saying under renovation. In fact all recommended places to visit in the James Town area that we visited on 28th december were closed or had nothing going on.

Look at the funeral how it goes !

The fort is closed and st James prison is has been transferred to another place apparently. So nothing much to see apart from fishermen houses.

Went to the CHALE WOTE festivity and loved how the place was full of people all over the world
