Museum on the site of a 19th-century army camp displaying military & Indian artifacts & photographs.
Great museum on Ft. HuachucaClean, friendly staff, informative
My family lived at Fort Huachuca when my father was stationed there, in the 1960s. My brother and I were young then. We were found playing with scorpions, with a stick. My mom freaked out; but somehow we didnt get stung. We moved on to Hanau, West Germany, and beyond, after leaving Arizona. I remember how hot it was living in the desert, but I always loved going back to the beautiful Desert Southwest! My mom lived in Tucson while in college, and loved it so much. RIP Mom <3
Interesting information on how Fort Huachuca was used and how the drones work.
Great history here on base. Nice camping area for military personnel.
Hidden Gem! REALLY NICE FACILITY!INTERSTING AND COOL!Worth dealing with the minor hassle of a Security Check to get on Base!
My children and grandchildren love this place!!!! Very informative!!!!!
Together, the three museums are quite interesting. To get to the museum you have to get a bass pass which takes approximately a half an hour for them to do a background check.
A lot of history of the fort and surrounding areas History. It wasnt quite like it was back in the 70s when I was here the first time.
I went there a few weeks ago. Very very good. Very informative too, they had really cool mannequins w/ historical uniforms. Mostly though, I really REALLY loved their gift shop. Got a bunch of stuff for my family there, a dreamcatcher for my mother, a few pieces of jewelry and statues n rocks for my wife. Very beautiful place. Lots of things to see. The lady working there was very nice too.
Its not a very big museum but lots of information. Lots of interesting history and photos.
We tried to get to this museum several times and never made it. It is on the base and to get a visitors pass it take an hour or more. Is it worth it? Dont know and dont have the excess time to wait and see.
A nice well kept clean museum about the fort huachuca and the soldiers that have been there and the Indians and then the annex right across the street had drones pretty cool and inside the museum theres a nice gift shop souvenir store with great stuff
Very nice and clean and well set up history museum of the fort and the soldiers and the annex had the drones loved the museums and theres a nice gift shop in the main one
Excellent museum. Lots of history. However, the museum needs to update the history of the Buffalo Soldiers serving with the French in WW 1. There is zero mention at the museum of the reason they did. The white American soldiers did not want to fight beside them. This is well documented history. Youve totally glanced over this. There is also no mention of the 1918 Bisbee race riot where soldiers were attacked by the Bisbee police. This is just as important as other events. Also, the amount of space dedicated to the Buffalo Soldiers is abysmal. They were a major part of the Fort, but the museum just pays them lip service.Hopefully, someone with the museum reads this and wake up. The Buffalo Soldiers deserve more than cursory attention.
Great history of the base and the Buffalo Soldiers. Soldier volunteer at the museum was knowledgeable and personable.
Nice little museum, I lived on base 2018-2019 and I didnt go till are last week there wish I had gone before
Great info on the history of this fascinating Army post. Dont miss the museums on base.
The Fort Huachuca museum is an excellent curator of the fascinating history of a particular moment of the US Army. The guide was very knowledgeable and discussed the various articles the soldiers of our past had used and worn. Anyone who is interested in history, especially military history should visit at least once.
Staff is nice, but still a very small setup. Could use more exhibits, but would require large donations/ funding
Great history of the Buffalo Soldiers and the Apache Scouts that helped them. Also of the U S Army with their many kinds of uniforms. The Army Post itself is interesting with all original buildings from the 1800s.
It was amazing! If youre a history buff, youll love it! Its small, but has so much information! The artifacts are so well put together with the information. The gift shop is amazing as well! The post cards are 0.01! I thought the lady made a mistake. I was looking and said "3 dollars? I thought the postcards were 1.00 each". Lol. I got 10 postcards and a geo rock for 3.85 cents! Tomorrow Im going back and buying 300 post cards and the rest of the Christmas cards they have. Lol. I love a sale! I cant believe I didnt visit this museum when I was stationed here. Please visit this museum if youre at Huachuca or are planning a visit; you wont regret it!
Spending summers with my Grandparents in Florida as a young child, I often heard of Fort Huachuca. So, to visit the museum was a thrill. Truly a powerful experience.
11/24/20Dont go here if you are out of state residents. We were turned away at the checkpoint gate because of it and covid. Wish the website stated that, it would have saved us alot time and trouble.
Small place but nice for those that like history.
Interesting history and accurate uniforms, visiting this museum was a great treasure.
Very good museum and worth the visit. Especially, to learn about the African American role in the West.
Very friendly, free, and up to date. This museum is not just one building but a vast complex. is hits i think 5 different buildings and each specific to each type of Military intelligence or the diverse soldiers that served through the ages.
Ok museum. Very small. Only worth a visit if youre nearby. Takes a while to get a visitor pass at entrance to the fort then you drive about a mile to museum on base.
You will have to drive up to the entrance and the guard will tell you to pull to the side & report to the visitor center. I told them I was there to see the Museum. There was maybe 2 people there during a weekday, so it was maybe a total of 15 minutes filling out the paperwork, show them your ID, take a pic and your on your way. It was an awesome experience to see the old history they preserve. This is a must see if you appreciate AZ history. God Bless our military!!
It is definitely worth the to get a pass into Ft. Huachuca in order to visit the post.A must is the Theater, films of the historic past of the fort and the present activity was quite an experience to see.Its a must see hidden treasure of Arizona.
I am a Canadian Veteran 67 years old with no criminal record staying in Green Valley AZ for 6 weeks. I have a passion for this particular military history and drove to the museum but my wife and I were labelled foreign nationalists at the gate and refused entry and not offered an escort to the museum from the gate entry point. What do we need to do to visit this museum. I will be in Green Valley next February and March 2020. Was not impressed and felt treated like a criminal. This is a public museum is it not, and I did not see stated that it was for only US citizens.I have since learned after writing this review that if a non US citizen wishes to visit the museum, contact the Sierra Vista Visitor Centre at least 3 weeks prior to your visit, to gain access to the museum.
The Military Intelligence museum is top notch. Lots of short videos and personal stories. The only trick is that you are entering an active base so you must go through the east gate, park in the small lot to the left and go inside the building for a security check.
Historical military history of the post. Some great relics and photos from the Buffalo soldier days. Beautiful location near the parade grounds and officer quarters. * Public must obtain a pass at the Damon gate prior to going on post. Military ID OK but everyone in vehicle MUST have a pass. Use the parking lot east and north of the gate and walk to the brown building to get your pass.
Took my family visiting from out of town and they loved it. Also got to see the Annex that has UAVs and more modern items in it now. Worth a visit if your family can get a base access pass.
Fascinating. Very well done. On par with the Smithsonian.
The history in S. Arizona is so much more than what you see in the media, for example, Why these forts were placed way out here. Apaches and Mexican Bandits, thats why. The property was legally purchased from Mexico and belongs to the U.S.A. Funny how some things dont seem to change.
The gift shop is wonderful. Great staff, all volunteers. Great place to buy gifts for everyone.Wish they would reopen the upstairs exhibits.. they were great.
Interesting history of the buffalo soldier and cavalry life at Ft. Huachuca. Definitely worth the visit. For those who do not already have one, visitors will need to stop at the main gate to obtain a no-cost pass to get on post.
First visit in quite some time. Disappointed. Display is well done for the Buffalo Soldier. But that is about all there is. The old theatre building once had displays on communications equip and testing missions but is now just a few drones. Second floor of main building is closed for renovation.
I started off with the uniform display which is expansive and well documented. I moved onto another building where they had a very good display of UAVs and their use through conflicts. Found the museum well maintained and lots of helpful people working there. A good place to stop if your in the area.
FYI: As of 8/17/18, the upstairs section which houses the majority of the exhibits is still under renovation. The first area (downstairs), gift shop and the theater across the street (home of the Electronics Proving Grounds exhibitsremain open. There are no indications for closure duration so please call and check the status if you wish to experience it in its entirety.
This is the second time that we visited the fort to see the Buffalo Soldier museum. The upstairs was still being remodeled. 2015 was the first, now 2018? Also, I thought it would be a lot bigger. I did get some great information that made me want to dig deeper into that history
Not a huge museum, but the exhibits were very well displayed. My father is a retired military pilot, who spent most of his career in air cavalry units, so the history of the units on display have a very real connection to my family. It doesnt take long to walk through, and there is so much history there you cant go wrong.
No interactive exhibits, but if you are into history, it is very interesting. Also, this is where they do drone training so you get the history of those, too. Note: you have to get a pass to enter the grounds so bring picture ID and allow yourself 15-30 mins to get the pass.
I really enjoyed the museum...very interesting to see the contributions of the Buffalo Soldiers to taming the west. I was quite surprised at the amount of battles between Buffalo Soldiers and Apaches in Arizona. There was also a cool section on drone development. I never realized they started working with drones back around 1958. In any event its totally worth the trip and youll get a pass that is good for visiting for a year.
A little-known but amazing museum with extensive history and displays of the Buffalo Soldiers and life in general in the harsh desolation of southeastern Arizona in the 1800s and early 1900s. Those people were tougher than beef jerky! Well worth visiting.
If you are in the area, make sure to visit this museum in Fort Huachuca. You must get a pass by entering at the Van De Mann gate. The history of Buffalo Soldiers can be found here. Many of the original barracks and other buildings are still in use. A visit to the cemetery is also recommended. Be sure to go to the Buffalo Corral to sign up for a guided sunset horseback ride!!!
Fantastic park, loved the beautiful gardens, a big thumbs up to the local Gardeners. The campground is very nice, the cave tour was very well done and informational, great activity center. Really were pleasantly surprised buy all there is to enjoy here. Will keep this on the come back list.
Great little museum showcasing Fort Huachucas history, with particular focus on the Buffalo Soldiers. The museum annex displays the bases current role as the home of the US Army Military Intelligence Corps. Fantastic visit for history and military intelligence buffs.Show up a little early. You will have to enter the visitors building, at the front gate, and apply for a pass to enter the base. Its free, but expect it to take 20-30 minutes.
A wonderful, free museum (please drop a little something in the donation boxthat is open to the public. It covers the history of the post and many people who were stationed here, and what life was like, as well as some history of the surrounding area.
