1 Queen St, Port Royal, Jamaica, New Kingston
Remains of a fort originally built in the 1650s, with a small museum & guided tours.
Good place to view our history as a Jamaican
Improved tour... more knowledgeable information, and tour guides.A marked effort to upgrade product.
The fort has an historical importance on the development of this country and its people. Reserve at least two hours for a guided visit and learn some curious facts about Jamaica and what is happening with the land around the fort.I felt like traveling to the past. Amazing!
Great history lesson. Ask for Sue, the tour guide. She is very knowledgeable and funny.
Clean cool environs with the exception of those gifts left by the strays
Had the most amazing experience at the Fort charles our Tour Guide Charmaine was wonderdul.Really would recommend this tour for every Jamaican and those plan to visit Jamaica
Good tour, guide was pretty well knowledged.
I enjoyed my tour guide. Learning about history is my favorite thing!!
Very interesting the tour guide was extremely knowledgeable
Its too expensive for locals. $1500fir a 30 mins tour is a crying shame!!
Go to Port Royal and learn a key part of history. The story of their lifestyle as pirates is very interesting.Wickedest and Richest city.
In the 1600’s Port Royal was a wealthy trading hub in the Caribbean. The purpose of my visit was to tour this historic site and learn more about Port Royals history. The tour boasts artifacts and replicas as far as the 1600’s. The tour guide, Andrew was informative and verse at Port Royal’s history. The tour was well paced over an hour with enough information that wasn’t overwhelming.
Very interesting history and wes very well told that to my guide very much appreciated
Nice place I would definitely go back. Wonderful staff, great breakfast. If you have to buy food a little bit pricey but good.
Our tour guide was impressive...with the exception of calling Jamaican Patois a dialect, which its not, as an anthropologist, this is a Creole language. Viva Jamaica 🇯🇲. The history of Port Royal is fascinating, word coming here if youre visiting Kingston.
Beware when you go there as a tourist/foreigner you will be paying more for ticket As a local you pay $10USD. Its a wonderful experince and you get a tour guide that walks you through the rich history of Jamaica.
It was just two of us with our Tour Guide Charmaine who did such a great job. She was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We went on a Tuesday, no reservation needed, and were the only persons there initially. The entrace fee was 1500 for locals and 1900 for tourists which I think was reasknable and worth the money.
Interesting history, friendly tour guides, the road into Port Royal is a little desolate and off putting.
Nice pirates history in this place!
It was a quite informative tour. It resulted in a better understanding of the lifestyle of soldiers on duty at the fort and how the physical landscape came to be what it was. A lot of the original artifacts have been replaced with replicas but there are still original materials, structures and items on site for viewing. The replica of the canon was fun to see turned on and placed in action.
Very informative tour. Recommend to history buffs
Historical place. Port Royal once known as the wicked established place on earth. Visiting gave me a feeling of nostalgia. Tour guide was phenomenal. Take your family amd friends there.
Learning about Jamaica history at Fort Charles and Port Royal was a very educated and historical experience. Our tour guide was informative, polite, and overall friendly while she showed us around the fort.
What an excellent experience! Our tour guide Dane was really informative and very kind. He really did a great job of explaining the order of events in a way that was super understandable and not overwhelming. Awesome visit! Careful in that Giddy House, though!! Damn. 😅🤦♀️
Come learn about a big part of Jamaicas history at Fort Charles. Our Tour guide was very knowledgeable and knew all the best spots to take photos with the artifacts. The Giddy house is definitely unique. See how well you can keep your balance at a 45 degree angle. Visit early in the day so that you have enough time to walk around the city.
This tour is well worth the time. Docent did a great job. Two major earthquakes destroyed much of the fort in the past, but the fort has been beautifully restored. There is a lot of information posted throughout the tour. If you are interested in the history of Jamaica, this is a must see historical site.
Informative and very kind Male guide, Dane . You cant buy the tickets with card so make sure you have enough cash.
Long time dream to visit here. Very cool historic fort, especially if you are interested in pirates.
Historic site with well preserved and documented history, excellent for school trips
Kool tour.. Well documented history. Perfect for family or school trip or stroll for knowledge
Great spot to go chill if your a fan of the ocean and loud waves
Very interesting history and its nice to visit whilst seeing other things in the area. We didnt have a guide and regretted it. I heard a little of what a guide was saying and he sounded great.
It was great they is a house that partially sunk..... if you go you will know why 😁..... the people are great too very help full and the town has great food.
Its quiet and cool. Nice people and I got to see the Giddy house that sunk during the earthquake.
Old world charm with thoughts and feelings of what may have happened within those fort walls. Easy access to the famous "Giddy House "Half sunken into the sand.
Lovely piece of history. Quite the place to learn about the once riches city in the world.
The history behind Port Charles is very rich. An earthquake took so many lives. Giddy house was my favourite!. The view was also amazing.
Beautiful preservation of that aspect of Jamaicas history. The Fort is well taken care of and gives an accurate depiction of how the English sought to protect the island. The artefacts are very interesting and its easy to identify those found in the sunken city. I loved it
A really cool bit of history. We should take better care of it.
The tour is of the remaining portion of the damaged Fort Charles. There is not much there, but there are some interesting artifacts and historical stories behind them, the cannons (the large non-heating one mainlyand the main attraction the Giddy House (which really makes you giddy). The entire property is well kept. We went in the middle of August 2018 so it was extremely hot. I advise that you take water and an umbrella with you during summer months, but at the end of the tour there is a snack shop where you can buy water and other beverages - it is staffed by a very pleasant lady. Unfortunately my family arrived just after a group of tourists, so we were basically just hangers on during the tour because while we would have preferred to have our own tour guide, we were instructed to just join the tourist group, but we were just left following the group because the guide wasnt really speaking to us. There are also a few other historical sites on the way to Fort Charles, such as the Naval Cemetery. I recommend the tour just for the knowledge and experience of it and the fact that it is affordable.
Fort Charles, otherwise referred to as Port Royal by locals, features the remnants of the first fort constructed in Port Royal between 1650 and 1660. I really enjoyed my visit there, especially my experience at the giddy house.
Pretty interesting place because of its rich history but would have been much better if wed had a tour guide
Really good tour and great history lesson!
A nice little history museum, near to a great eating spot. Needs upkeep and maintenance though.
A must see! Nice well preserved buildings. Awesome place for pics!
Historic treasure in the heart of Port Royal that has been well-preserved to this day. They charge an admission fee of $600 and $300jmd for locals & US$15 and $8 for visitors (adult & childwhich gives you access to the Fort Charles museum, battery, Giddy House, cannons and the rest of the fort. Walk-ins are welcome and you can choose to explore unguided or with a tour guide.
Fort Charles is located in the small town of Port Royal, (KingstonJamaica. The size of the fort was built under the Spanish rule and has of late undergone some natural changes, thanks to the earthquakes and natural calamities that struck the port town. It currently serves as a museum for locals and tourists alike. Even though it is not a must see location in Jamaica, it would be a nice half day tour to learn some interesting history about Jamaica. The architecture of the fort is pretty noteworthy too!
Amazing time travel into the treasure of Port Royal. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and made the learning experience fun. Admission was locals: $600 and visitors: 15usd but it was all worth it. Makes u really appreciate the history behind this little island we love.
A historic place to visit when in Jamaica. Some parts of the tour was more engaging than others. There were lots of opportunities to learn more about the Jamaican history.
Visiting this fort was definitely one of the highlights of my entire trip to Kingston. It was too hot to do the city tour so we just opted for a tour of the fort. Dont skip this! Our tour guide, Andrew, was incredibly knowledgeable and really enhanced the visit so much. He was Able to add additional information to what was listed in the two small museums and explained so much about the fort and all the disasters it befell. Andrew is from Port Royal and showed us where he used to play in the tunnels below the fort as a child. Those tunnels are now filled in showing that the place is still sinking. Giddy house is a lot of fun to try to walk in. Andrew also picked fruit from the almond tree and showed us how to eat it then break the seed to get the nut. He was terrific and earned a great tip!
