Folly Ruins - Historical place in Port Maria, Jamaica
Really underrated place - stunning ruins of a former mansion fallen to the mercy of the sea. Lots of interesting architectural sights, and a great view of monkey island and the coast from the top. Climb at your own risk though!! The place is literally falling apart. A must do if you’re in the city!
Historical experience
A piece of history still standing
Great 👍
Portland historical sites
Good
Beautiful seenry
Place was breath taking, history perched right on the side of a cliff leading to the deep blue sea. Scenery was authentically Jamaican.
A historic site in my hometown Port Antonio, Portland Jamaica. The entrance way needs to be better kept, and also better roads in Portland is long overdue our leaders need to step up. We have some of the best places in Jamaica but they are difficult to access.
Not the most pleasing environment leading up to the ruin. Littered with garbage
This place is wonderful! Its in front of a beautiful sea side view, and the atmosphere is calm. Its also close to where I live. I definitely will be visiting again soon!
Lovely view nice location quite and breathtaking
Wonderful place...Contact 1222Frames on Instagram for photos.
a small island that can be walked to at low tide is an interesting sidetrip..the view from the ruins back into the blue mountains is wonderful
Wonderful place to cool out
Unkept and deserted, has potential once it is cleaned and maintained
It’s alright... a little ghetto but definitely worth seeing while here in Port A since there’s not a lot of historical stuff.
Needs to be cleaned up so that visitors can appreciate it. Its bushy and feel like a lost world. Jamaican Govt maintains nothing... hence this - a true ruin like everything else.Dont visit this place, scary.
Very beautiful and it came with a great story
Lugar bastante especial y particular, pero muy solitario. Precaución y sentido común
Very good historical site but needs to invested in to even make an attempt to restore
Its an historical broken down building
It was a fun trip because of the people I went with but, there is literally nothing to do except look at the ruins. The history behind it is intriguing and that was enough to make us want to go see it. There is no security so I wouldnt recommend going alone and pretty much every wall is vandalised with graffiti. Good 15-minute stop on your way to other attractions in Portland though.
Awesome
I wish the Government would fix this place up...the historical value is priceless....beautiful location
Needs a guide too much history to tell
If you know anything about the Folly Great House or you dont you can come by and see it at is glory. It still stands and it over looks the beautiful Caribbean sea. If your familiar with the waters take a swim. But look out for the fishes that pass by. If the tide is low you can walk over to the Monkey Island.
The best view
Beautiful location!
Nice area by the sea , excellent to take your pictures, should have been preservers by the national heritage trust, instead a man of unsound mind resides under the lower level. The are is over grown with grass etc.
The place was cool, I like the history. The story I was told was that a man built this mansion for his wife from England but he built it out of sea sand and sea water. It began to crumble and she took it as a bad sign and refused to live there. They moved back to England and the place was abandoned. So sad!
No tour guide is present
Great area to visit
Great monumental and historical site of Portland
Beautiful photography location
Great site. Great view. The ruins have been vandalized over the years but the basics of the history is still there.
Photo by me (Folly Great House
Needs more attention from local authorities, has lots of potential for tourist activities
Beautiful historic ruins in a fabulous settng by the Caribbean.
The design looks pretty amazing, be careful if you decide to walk on the building as there are some holes on higher floors. Folly Ruins overlooks a breathtaking costal area.
The view is awesome
Old ruins of the folly house.
During My first trip to Jamaica, I was taken to this "folly". It is truly a Folly in that the lack of wisdom in building principles would lead to a "crumbling" walls..Well worth the visit at a place that that should not be overlooked.
Amazing site, do not miss it
Breathtaking ruins near the Folly Lighthouse, must see when in Portland! Take a look at this magnificent building with a variety of mixed architectural styles!
Folly Great house was a grand mansion built about a hundred years ago by an American heir. He built it in such a hurry that he so pressured the workers that they used sea sand to mix the concrete. When the lady came to Jamaica to see their would be love nest it had already started to fall apart as a result of the sea sand used in its construction. The house or rather its ruins are real. The story itself is part real and part legend. What cannot be contested is that it has fallen into ruinate and is mostly a hang out for idlers. Dont waste your time here. Go to bars and awesome beaches in the island.***
Great to visit, when i was younger this place was a playground for me. enjoy the sandy beaches and take walk to the small island close by
