Deep & winding river canyon, about 2 million years old, with a walking path & panoramic views.
Stunning, words and photos cant do it justice. Beautiful place well worth a visit.
There’s several viewpoints in this canyon, you will have to walk a bit and it does get quite windy.
Incredible. I wasnt expecting much as it wasnt in the main attractions that I found while researching, but man, one of the best suprises in the trip.It is really close from Road 1, the road there is gravel but really smooth, and you reach to a parking and have a 1 km walk around the canyon, with 3 main viewpoints during the hike.Really recommendable, even if its raining which we got, its still amazing to see.
MUST go.gorgeous place.Paths are easy to walking around.WC available.
Absolutely stunning canyon, a short walk takes you to the viewpoint at the top to see the scale of the canyon. The staff who work there are amazing, knowlegeable, friendly and helpful. Well worth a visit.
Stunning canyon, accessible by car + short stroll.Remember to bring a good jacket and winter trousers, can be quite windy.Parking is free
Note: get here early in the morning otherwise it can be crazy with bus loads of people at times.Great little hike to different views. We got here in the early hours of the morning It was so peaceful and calm you can really enjoy the views
Really nice place to visit if you’re in the area. The parking spaces are limited so people end up parking on the road as well. From the parking there are 3 viewing points and a short climb up (depending on which parking you choose). In total (including 3 viewpointsits a 20-30 min walk. The park has been closed down due to tourists climbing over the fences and killing the fauna.. also this time there were some idiots that felt the need to do so and start cursing at you if you say something about it.. please don’t be like these people and just respect the nature
Definitely one of the most impressive spots of Iceland, this canyon is really impressive. When visiting it theres an easy walking to do along the side that lead to an higher viewpoint where you can have an amazing overview. The parking is free and there are also public toilets available.
This place was pretty cool. A bit of a hike, nothing too strenuous. You can fly a drone here up and down the canyon. A couple really good vantage points along the trail. Some GREAT photos to be had at the very end.Parking is at the lot at the end of the access road and along the road. We saw so many spaces open in the lot while people were parking way up the road.. Go to the lot before parking 1/4 mile away!Bathroom facilities are ok here. Big outhouses.
This was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen.If youre visiting, be aware that it is an easily accessible popular destination and there will likely be many other people there.
Amazing canyon. Breathtaking views. You wont believe you are actually there. Filming location for season 8 episode 1 of Game of Thrones!
Awesome canyon without drone restrictions. There is a trail following the canyon nearly to the upper end, featuring various structures and waterfalls.Highly recommend the walk.
Spectacular and not very crowded (but still expect lots of people)!About a 30/40 minutes stay counting return and plenty of time to take pictures. However, if youre in a hurry, just park at the other parking, all the way up, near the Viewpoint. There you have the best views and the parking its closer. The one I used was free.
Such a wonderful place. Easy walk and beautiful views. Free parking and free washrooms. Best spots for photos are unfortunately closed.
Was a super easy trail! Imagine it would almost be doable with someone with crutches, but maybe thats a bit too steep.Either way, stunning views! Even at the beginning you get a great view of the canyon.Highly recommend parking at the bottom so you hike from the bottom to the top. Neat toilets and a seating area there as well.We unfortunately hit a bit of rain near the top. Wouldve loved to hike in the canyon itself, but understandably it was closed off.
Visited in July 2022.This is also known as "Feather River Canyon". Absolutely worth visiting. One of the more unique sites we saw on our trip around the country. I honestly cant remember the parking or bathroom situation here, but I think the bathrooms were out of service that weekend and it was a little busy so cars were parking along the road to the parking lot.It wasnt a very lengthy hike from the parking lot. We probably spent 30 min - 1 hour in total, strolling the path and enjoying the panoramic views from the several viewpoints. I am scared of heights and dont really like hiking, and I was totally fine. The viewpoints have railing and the hike is on a fairly level path.
It is halfway between Skógafoss and Skaftafell along the ring road, just before reaching the small town of Kirkjubbaejarklaustur. Nearby is the Fagrifoss waterfall.Keep in mind that the road that leads to the parking lot is dirt. This will start with a climb that will quickly split in two. In this case we will have to turn left even though the main dirt road goes to the right.
The road to the canyon is easy and doable, no F road. The canyon is just 1 km long and the path is well described. Considering also the easy access (free parking right at the start), it turns out to be a pleasant walk for any physical condition and age.The view is so breathtaking that detour from Ring Road is worth it.Note: there is a bathroom in the parking lot but it was closed in mid July.
Easy walk. Nice views. Free parking.
One of the best cliff formations in Iceland. Has a really good viewing point with some nice picknicking options down at the parking lot.
Visited May 2022.Mother natures doing to carve out a canyon. Nice. There is parking and very well maintained paths to walk about the canyon. Good place for a stroll.
Really unique canyon river feature easily accessible off highway 1. Its kind of a long uphill walk from the parking lot, but theres plenty of overlook spots along the walk if you dont want to go the whole way. Its deifntely worth if for the canyon and waterfall view at the top though.
Obviously made famous by Justin Bieber but there is good reason he went. Wow wow and wow. A special valley that you don’t want to miss. They were fixing the road but still easy to drive a camper van in. A special place in Iceland
Nice and easy hike here with scenic views. The road to parking lot is closed due to roadworks. Expect to have some extra time to park and walk to the beginning of trails.
This canyon was one of my highlights of the trip, it’s absolutely stunning. You can take a short walk up a path to a platform that looks over the canyon.Definitely a must see! It’s a pretty rough gravel road to get there right now (May 2022but we managed it in our small rental car fine.
Super gorgeous! Area is under construction though and WC/bathroom at the base of the hill and some trails is only open in “summer” (maybe June-August? wasn’t open at end of May).To get to this view, take the road that forks to the right at the top of the hill (when we went construction was going on at the top of the hill and many people were parking on the left side of the streetand it will lead you up to a small parking lot with a short 5 minute walk.
Prepare for some interesting driving to get to the parking spot right now. Think theres road improvements going on in May 2022 - rough roads, gravel, massive stones. Probably not right for a hire car, but we went for it. Parking area had 3 toilets, clean. Short hike up steep hills for some amazing views. Go for it!
A must stop along the route on Southern Iceland. An uphill hike but not so far at 1km in total. The bathroom facilities were closed on the day we visited.
Absolutely stunning canyon with gorgeous panoramic views. Not too long of a walk to get to the view points - we spent 45 mins total here. There are 3 viewpoints, the last one is the panoramic one.
A must stop! There is a little bit of walking required but well worth it going to the top. There is actually a car park on the north of it which is way easier and less walking.
Loved it! The canyon is breathtaking. Definitely hike to the last platform and enjoy every viewThe different colored waterfalls meeting eachother at the end of the canyon are spectacular. There are restrooms at the parking lot but unfortunately they are out of order.
We were lured with a 40-minute hike and as a reward being smack in the middle of a canyon. We found a cordonned off pathway that was just 1km long. Even though still beautiful it is clearly catered to a different type of tourist. Easy walkways. Walkway graveled not a pothole in sight. Everything roped off. No way to roam and get close to nature. It has become a tourist attraction. Like going to the circus to see the wild animals. The tigers and lions are majestic. But theyve clearly been domesticated. Great if you want to see something beautiful without too much effort.
Great hike to the viewpoint to see this beautiful canyon.
A must-see location, it is breathtaking! Be careful cause there were a couple spots I thought we would slip and fall into the canyon haha. There are drones allowed, and would be a sweet shot if youre experienced enough to fly between the rocks. Great stop while here in Iceland.
Impressive canyon! Hopefully it stays open for while, as long as people respect the signs and stay behind the rope and dont destroy the grass and moss.
Since it was April, the majority of the footpaths were closed. What was open was pretty muddy and slippery but well-worth the views.
Perfect place! Nice landscapes. Please respect the trail and the nature. And spend 5 mins talking with the local ranger, shes very kind and can give you many informations about Iceland
The canyon is gorgeous however like so many other natural sights it is drastically different than if visited in summer, that is NOT to say that its not worth seeing and being amazed by it in winter. The cliffs are just a reminder of how small we really are. Stay on the walkway... Its a cliff and with snow you dont know where tye soft spots are.
Definitely in the top of most beautiful places I’ve seen in all my travels - absolutely beautiful and we were lucky to go and have the whole place to ourselves. The view from the bridge is spectacular to see through the canyon, and then the 1Km walk up to the 3 different view points (all beautiful, but the 3rd ending at a spectacular standing station and waterfallwere breathtaking. We constantly had to stop and go, “WOW!” We went in January - definitely need crampons for your shoes as the path has icy/snowy buildup. You won’t be able to get to view #3 without crampons! We had a lovely park ranger there to assist us with general tips AND gave us a shoelace so I could tighten the crampon on my foot (my partner and I had to share 1 set of crampons as that’s all we had and we didn’t want to miss out on the views!)
A MUST stop along the road! Drones are allowed but be cautious!! The best spots for the drones are right in the middle of the little bridge right before the path. Drones can fly right into the canyon but be careful for signals. The hike along the canon has 3 amazing stops for pictures. Don’t fly the drone at any of the 3 spots, you’ll loose the drone! Overall an amazing stop.
Beautiful place with easier hike up along the ridge.. Most of the trail surface is paved by the "rubber carpet". It is easier to walk on it than on usual gravel bulky stony trails where the ancles suffer.. It is quite place with amazing views. During summer there is also WC.. It is possible to drive down taking potholes road and up (where the waterfall istaking F road. Personally I like it more when green during summer.. It is also yellow/brown or white during winter.. I better post also picture of infopanel because many people write it is not allowed to drone which is not true. The rule for this place is: "The use of drones is only allowed if wildlife is not disturbed. NEVER fly drones above people for safety reasons and respect for other visitors."
The parking lot was very small and the water closet was closed, but this hike was short and very sweet! There are three different view points on the short hike (almost all uphill), then a longer one that goes several kilometers. Our group did the three viewing points in about 45min (roundtrip. Its a great place to stop if you have a few minutes!
What an amazing place!Definitely not to be missed during your trip! These "canyons" are so beautiful. If you go towards the end of the small walk, youll see the three waterfall coming together to form the river going through the canyon.Totally worth it, even with a little bit of rain.
Great views of the canyon, well maintained trail, though somewhat of a pain to get to from Route 1.Focusing on the canyon itself, I cant find anything really to ding it for! It was beautiful and had multiple view points on the natural outcrops of the canyon. One nuissance is seeing clear disregard for the signage. You can see plenty from the viewpoints, but you can tell from the wear that people go out further on the outcrops.
One of the most beautiful locations in Iceland. There is a long walk up an upward hill, so be warned if you tire easily. The walk is not too bad overall and if you walk down the two side paths to the different viewing areas you will not regret walking up the hill from the car lot. The final viewing platform at the end of the trail is the greatest reward because of the view you get to experience. I enjoyed everything about this place from the colors, the Cliffside and the running water below at the bottom of the canyon.
Beautiful. Short hike and very convenient parking. Just off the ring road. Also had WCs on site. Worth the visit
Stunning! Can drive to the lower parking with 2WD vehicle and then walk up. Definitely worth the 1hr round trip walk including time to view! Drones are also allowed here.
Its a really pretty Canyon. Both times we were there was worth it. Youre not allowed to walk away from the paths and to fly drones there. The Canyon is beautiful, both in winter and spring/summer. The road can be a bit steep and the parking lot is not big. If youre near Fjaðrárgljúfur Id recommend it.
So beautiful! Highly recommend making the detour if you can. Round trip takes about 40 minutes with lots of photo ops. The trail is easy and we’ll maintained (although you can expect a bit of an incline). You do NOT need a 4x4 to get to the parking lot. There are two parking lots. One of the parking lots requires a 4x4 since it’s on an Froad. To get there you’ll turn right off the main road at some point. That road gets you a little closer to the final viewing platform. While the main road ends in a parking lot that everyone can reach. If you just stay on the main road and keep going straight, you won’t have any issues. The main road does get a bit bumpy at the very end, but it doesn’t last long. The parking lot is very obvious, you can’t miss it. There are toilets, picnic tables and trash bins at the parking lot. The trail head is clearly marked.
