Fish Hook - Fish & chips shop in Dunedin, New Zealand
Amazing Thai Food love it...mixed with the fresh fish and chips for the non Thai lovers
Such a shame, this place started off doing great fish and chips, got sold and not sure what its meant to be now 😔
Ordered 10 spring rolls & the Pork Thai Noodle Soup with a friend of mine. SO delicious, such a good portion, and a lot of meat in the soup for $12.50! This place is a hidden treasure for sure. The restaurant staff were so polite as well.
Best blue cod in Dunedin. Sat in Knox Church park across the road in the sun. Lovely.
Fish, hot dog, spring roll and pineapple ring were all great. Skinny fries were soft so dont recommend those so much- will try thick cut next time. Pad thai portion was huge- definitely value for money but flavour was a bit lacking.
A good place for Thai food despite the name. I personally enjoy the Tom yum noodle soup and the bbq pork noodle soup. Used to be $10 for lunch but now its $12.50. Still a fair value as portion size is large and the owner is an actual Thai! Tried Pad Thai a couple times but was a bit off, fried rice was good tho. Overall I would say they produce good food but consistency is still not there. Despite me always ordering the same thing out of 5 times 1 time the taste would be slightly off. However, for the price I think its justifiable and the owner is a very nice lady.
Very disappointedOrdered a meal, was told it would be a 15 minute wait. Took 40 minutes for it to be ready.Staff refused to talk to me or show sincerity about the wait.
Beautiful food I had Takeaways Tai and fish burger, awesome, recommend this one
Poilet and friendly staff, service is great. We enjoy our little notes or pictures on our takeaways.Thank you for being so positive regardless of everything that is happening..
Amazing good Thai food for Dunedin. Had good stir fry pad see yew, pad kee Mao & Thai beef noodle soup. Will be ordering again :)
Small family run restaurant. Good food & friendly staff. Great fish & chips, and Thai cuisine.
Its good that they have gluten free fish and chips, but sadly they werent great. Fish was oily and chips a bit over-done.
Ordered Pad Thai for lunch in this location. The place was clean and the personnel here was friendly. Totally disappointed with the Pad Thai noodle dish. The taste was okay, however there was nothing Pad Thai about the dish. It was a dish of plain noodles with some sauce and fried egg, and with some beansprouts on top. The beansprouts were not stir fry together with the noodles. What a disappointment. Will not recommend this place. Attached are two pictures - Pad Thai displayed as beautiful and amazing dish in a photo and reality.
Fish Hooks is an amazing place for Thai food. They have amazing option of Thai food. You can get lunch specials for $10They do have vegan/vegetarian options. Their Tom Yum soup is something to die for. Personally, it is an amazing Thai restaurant.I have not tried their fish n chips as I am a vegetarian. However from what I have gathered it is not the greatest fish and chipsThe service is amazing ! Friendly Thai staff , they go the extra mile. Highly recommended
Inedible Beef Curry. Tried 3 bits of meat all nothing but fat and gristle. The most disgusting food experience Ive ever had.Oily and greasy too. Probably 20-25% of the sauce was pure straight orange coloured oil that had seperated from the rest.Wont ever be ordering from here again.Good news is Im a vegetarian now.....
Good food quickly. Pricey for fish and chips, but nicer than your average chip shop too to make up for it. People are nice too.Chips are up there with fancy cafe chips but cheaper and more generous, so a good option if youre wanting something to feed the kids with in town.
As the name might suggest its a fish and chips place, it do sell pretty good Thai food for a pretty good price for lunch. Especially if youre a student this place offers good 10 dollar meals for lunch. The mild spiciness is too mild for me so if you want more spice go for medium at least I think. The people running the business here are Thai as well so I would say its quite authentic for Thai food.
We really like your fish and chips - freshly cooked fish and great chips. But, we tried the Thai food tonight and Im not sure if you were trying to "bland" it for kiwi tastes, but we found it very uninspiring. As the name might suggest its a fish and chips place, it do sell pretty good Thai food for a pretty good price for lunch. First time eating Thai food and it was sensational. Very tasty food, awesome staff, my family will definitely come again.
The food was good, loved the BBQ pork soup and the condiments on the table, the fish tasted fresh and wasnt very greasy, there wasnt some one always at the counter but just ring the bell and someone will come, happy as overall
Their Fish and Chips (I prefer the Blue Codis light, the chips were fine. They have several delicious sauces. I love this place.
I was here on a Saturday for an early lunch at 1:00 PM. I ordered the Thai fish cakes and the cashew nuts beef stir fry with rice. Service was fast, food quality is good for a student joint.
Expensive! Over complicated menu if all you are looking for is good old kiwi fish and chips, they didnt pull off what ever they were trying to with the battered fish, strange taste, chips too large and I think oil they were cooked in was too old as they tasted slightly burnt. No I wont go back in afraid.
Blue cod is 2 small measly piece, taste is bland. The other F&C portions are small and the tar tar sauce does not have enough flavor
The food I ordered was speedily prepared, of decent quality, and at a reasonable price. They have a good range of Thai as well as F&C options, and have tables or takeaway. Ill definitely be back!
I was trying to decide weather to go to the fish and chip shop in mornington or drive into town to the Fish Hook. So two skinny little red emporors, four tiny scollops, wo scopes of chips and $38 later, I wish that I had of stayed in mornington. Would have been half the price too. No wonder that I was the only one in there.
This restaurant has really gone down hill. When first eating here the fish and chips was absolutely great but it seems under new management the quality and quantity has gone downhill.Fish n Chips the other night was not pleasant. Soggy batter and lukewarm fries.
Was staying in Dunedin on holiday and went into Fish Hook and had a $15 fish meal with chips and salad. It was nice and fresh.Recommend this place as its really good
Absolute rip offs. High price disgusting food. Hotdogs cooked to a dry crisp. $6 of chips was a large handful. Blue cod 2 little bits $9. We asked if chicken wings had any spice in them for my girls they said no. But that wasnt true. had to purchase more food for tea elsewhere.
find this place by luck, been eat in three times in a day. The rice noddle dishes are must try. I had beef noodle, the beef balls must home made, taste so GERAT. Soup taste just like what i had in north of Thailand.
We needed some gluten free fish for one of our children so we thought wed give it a go. She loved her piece of fish which is a small miracle. On the pricey side for us, but for how much we enjoyed our fish and chips wed pay a bit more. Will visit again!
Had the Thai fish cakes and Chicken Larb. Very favoursome and tasty. The serving of the Chilcken Larb was generous and very filling. Look forward to trying Fish Hooks other dishes. Plenty of variety. Fantastic food.
Good food, not too pricey for what youre getting, they offer great cooking options available with grilled, beer batter or crumb
Fish and chip place with Dunedins best Thai food. I had a green curry, and my friend a pad thai, and both were superb.I apprecaite theres lots of bad asian food available from f&c takeaways, but this was actually very good.
Spent $80 on bluff oysters they were greasy and the fat/oil was dirty. Very very disappointing will never go there again which is a shame as it used to be so good 🤐
Quiet the night we visited. Good fish and crispy chips but the salad which was cabbage was totally boring. Licensed
Reasonably priced, good quality fish and chips, had blue cod and chips and 1/2 dozen oysters, quick and friendly
We had a delicious meal at the Fish Hook restaurant last night. The service was great. We had crumbed blue cod which was cooked perfectly, a yummy salad. The squid was tender and tasty! The chips were cooked perfectly, crispy on the outside. The price was very reasonable too. My wife had a delicious Thai fish soup which was full of flavor, perfect amount of spice. Will definitely go again !
A very average meal the soul burger was tasteless with no seasoning it could have done with a nice lemon aoli or something anything. My partner had the blue cod which was more batter than fish. Really disappointed with the whole meal the area behind the counter was cluttered and untidy 35$ for fish n chips it was well below average best part of the night was going home
Took our friend here for tea on Sunday 19th August.. Got the fish and chips and thought Id get a paua patty.. plate arrives and the paua patty was that thin my paper tissue would of been fatter.. No taste as Im sure the paua skidded threw the batter. Was given another patty which also the same as the first... so highly disappointed..
The fish and chips here are delicious and there is a large variety to choose from. We thought the portions were generous and the staff is very friendly. It wasnt busy at all when we went and we had a yummy meal here.
Best fish and chips in town. Eat in to have them at their best. Busy but reasonably quick nevertheless.
Quite small portions for the price we paid I thought we were missing some of our order, I think if they worked on cooking things right and actually giving you what you paid for this place would be 5 stars. The sole burger yummy though
Well... not bad, but not so good, specially when you have a look at the great reviews it had! Dont know if it had changed of owner, but not so friendly, chips just average, and fish as well...
Worst Fish & Chips we have ever had after waiting 3/4 of an hour the chips were stale and the fish was almost black and dried up in the middle and smelt bad when we lifted the hotdog out of the box it was so oily the skin fell off it, we couldnt actually eat any of it.I rung and complained the lady at the other end of the phone couldnt understand me.Would never go back there again "disgusting"
The batter for the blue cod is thick and some parts uncooked. Yucks, imagine eating wet flour. Fish is not fresh. The white bait patties is miserable, yet cost $7.5. Wasted our time going there.
Awesome fishnchips! We had two sole filets for 5,90 and it was delicious as well as the cumara fries. The staff is super friendly, in our opinion the best fishnchips in New Zealand!
Freshest and yummiest battered Terakihi fish Ive ever had. Highly recommend this fish n chip shop to anyone visiting Dunedin. The character and charm of the place enhanced the meal.
Some of the best fish and chips Ive had in a 2 week visit to NZ.The staff are super friendly and helpful when it comes to picking what to eat and the fish is incredibly fresh. My one complaint would be that the fish serve wasnt particularly large but one cant complain when the quality is that good.
Highly enjoyed the meal. Everything was tasty and well cooked. The people were friendly. Prices reasonable. I note that the store is under new management and theyve only been there about three months.
