First Landing Cross - Historical landmark in Virginia Beach, United States
Good customer service
Located on Fort Henry. Right next to the lighthouses. This is the place European stopped before moving on to Jamestown. Be prepared as its on a military base
Great place to relax and take in the view. Also pickup a little history. The lighthouse is a good photo prop.
Beautiful park. Actually warmer in the park than on the beach. Very different variety of plants and trees
Beautiful piece of art. Must see for those who can visit.
Im sure it is amazing if you can see it. We traveled to Virginia Beach from Ohio and this was one of our top spots that we wanted to visit. We were turned away at the gate and told that because of Covid, only military ID holders would be permitted to go in. I came back to our hotel and looked it up to see if maybe I had missed something. It was not published on the VB visitors site or the Virginia tourism site that it was closed to the public. After some digging, I did find the alert on another website for the First Landing but only after you click on a link for their "alerts". If it is going to be unavailable for regular citizens to visit, then it shouldnt be advertised as a place of interest or at the very least, noted that you must be military to visit. Very disappointed.
Inside a military base, closed to visitation due to covid. Dont lose time, if you go heavily armed men will only tell you to turn back.
Not sure if this is a real place or not. We followed Google Maps directions which lead us to Fort Story entrance. We were told by the Sentury at the guard shack that the lighthouse is closed due to inclement weather and when we asked about the cross he said "What Cross? There is no cross here." Then had us turn around and exit property.
Thanks be to God almighty for your grace.
This needs to be a tour group guide. This is on a military base. They gave us so many rules on where we could go. As a civilian youre limited where to go. I dislike being told I could be arrested and fined $800.00 per person, for being in a wrong place. Also, they need to keep up on the one walk path we can take. It was very over grown and you could see the military one better up keep. I liked the visit. It was very nice. I feel a guided tour or people around to say "dont go there" might of made this better.
Fun landmark to visit definitely reccomend.
Very cool landmark and very nice area
Saw it from a boat. Did get to see it up close.
This is a beautiful area with interesting history.
Loved being able to see historical spots.
For a history buff its a good visit, two events in one with early colonial and revolutionary war historical events. The site is basic but there are good ocean views, great ship watching (entrance to the Chesapeake), and a quiet natural beach nearby with two historic lighthouses to look at (closed when i was there but great for photos). Worth visiting if you can get on the base, easier if you have a military member with you.
Beautiful area! Weather was great and we were able to take some wonderful pictures for our holiday family pics.
Worth a stop if checking out the lighthouses, the cross is a more permanent version of the original oak cross the fashioned over 400 years ago when those blokes from England came and founded the country under God, as is the national motto now (In God We Trust). Cheers.
I didnt realize how big this place was.
Where it begins! This is on a military base and so glad it is. History needs to be protected and knowing not everyone can get there and deface it brings comfort.
Good story behind it, but very limited in what you are allowed to see
If you visit the lighthouse, dont neglect to see this historic place right across the road.
Its a beautiful place to visit. I would love to go back.
Nice quiet place to visit when we were there.
Wonderful view and a Tripp back in time to the old light house.
It was very thought-provoking, knowing I was standing where our early fathers stood, not knowing if they would live through tomorrow. It always brings new respect, when I wonder what I would have done in their place.Everyone should visit our historical sites and try to understand what they went through, their hardships and victories. It would give more meaning to being American and what a hard-bought thing it is, to be free. They risked all and many died, not for their comfort, but for ours.
Came all the way from Minnesota for the cross. If you dont know the story behind the cross being erected, I urge you to look into the history of the cross. Erected by the original settlers years before Plymouth Rock.
It was very nice, the over look is absolutely beautiful.
First Landing Site was peaceful and we saw dolphins off the coast
Wonderful history and awesome site to visit.
Quiet place of beauty
I very much liked First Landing because the walk to it was along a boardwalk ( which is in need of some repairs as there are many loose boardsThere was a lushness of greenery along the way which was lovely. When you reach the point on The First Landing you are right there on the beach facing the ocean. To stand there knowing that this is exactly where the settlers first stepped foot here. It leaves one with a feeling of euphoria.
Beautiful place, rich history. Worth the visit and check out the lighthouses
Went to see my grandson and he took us looking around where he works what a beautiful place it took my breath
If you are wanting facilities this is not the place. If you want a semi private less crowded area this is the place
Limited access to area due to being on a base but a nice area & the guide was very knowledgeable .
Had a great time
It was fantastic. You do not have to be military to enjoy this site. Must have government ID, valid drivers license, and you get on their shuttle to visit this area. We got to see dolphins playing out at sea.
My whole trip was based on coming to the lighthouse you are not able to go in the lighthouse but the driver was very nice. I wish we were at least able to be closer to the lighthouse not looking at it from a distance from a hill.
I saw dolphins! Beautiful spot but have to be military to get access
We had a great day. Very knowledgeable staff. Great visit
Great place to bring the kids and have fun at the beach. The lighthouse is simply a walk across the street. The beach is amazing for the kids, so much wildlife from horseshoe crabs, dolphins, and so forth.
Rich Im history like the rest if VA. Its a very scenic area away from the hustle of the VA beach.
Very nice memorial
History remembered. Always a great day when the kids get a histroy lesson and still call it a fun day.
National Historical Site, maintained by the NPS, amazing that what we call the United States of America primary started here and not Plymouth Rock. Check out the NPS website for more information.I absolutely adore this spot. When visiting be sure to be aware this is on a military base and that everyone must have ID, proof of car insurance, and registration. Leave the weapons and drugs at home because they will seach your car.Hours are sunrise to sunset, however that is if you are military or escorted. Otherwise hours are from 10 am to 5pm in the summer months.
Historic site thats well maintained with a awesome information placards. Great stop for any early American history buffs.
Quiet beach, dog friendly, on base so photo id is required. Good place to look for sea glass.
Im a huge nerd but come on, how cool is this!? The spot where they first landed to then establish the first permanent settlement here (over in Jamestown). Plymouth Rock can step off.
There is a boardwalk here that leads to an overlook. You can view the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel and the lighthouses from this vantage point. A great spot to take photos.
