Botanically diverse reserve offering scenic hiking trails, landscaped gardens & views of Walker Bay.
Awesome place. Pristine nature. Great hikes and safe
We had a glorious picnic !!! Everything is clean, treasured, proudly presented and functions 100%. Congratulations to Fernkloof Nature Reserve 🌿
Great Reserve for a family outing. Easy walking with breathtaking views.
I would say this is probably the closest to heaven that Ill ever get. Its as if Ive found a hidden gem, and Im afraid it will be taken away from me. Start enjoying your life and start doing these routes. I used to be overweight, and a smoker and this reserve changed it. If I could do it, then you can as well. Do yourself a favor and go out now!!
Beautiful. Free to visit. Well kept. Perfect for relaxing, a hike, taking the kids, or just viewing the flowers and variety of trees.
Beautiful trail which was decently maintained on the route we took to the three dams. not a strenious walk and can be done be people of moderate fitness. As one gets closer to the third dam, some scrambling is required. Also, some steep stairs so some care to be afforded to those more aged or with disabilities.,
Very nice nature reserve, but definitely not for MTB.There are little to no signs indicating the route.Would definitely recommend rather going to Hemel & Aarde MTB if you want to cycling. But for hiking i’m sure this reserve would be okay - just take note of poor signage
There are some nice trials to hike with the family if youre looking for something quick and easy. If youre looking to go for a nice swim, the three dams are absolutely stunning and its only a 20 minute hike from the visitors centre. 5/5.
An awesome nature reserve with great short hiking trails, amazing views and well looked after. There are great picknick spots for families with small kids too.
Beautiful! I didn’t quite figure out the route markings based on the map - but if you have a garmin watch there are great routes that you can download via the app. Well kept trails and awesome views at the top. I’m not super fit and I could manage a 10km trail run while hiking up the steep parts.
The walking trails are so picturesque! Also love the garden - it feels so magical. There is also a small nursery and a picnick area with tables and ablution blocks. You can also see a couple of small tortoises roaming around sometimes. The only thing I can recommend to do better is that the trails should be marked a bit more along the route - we got a little lost.
Stunningly beautiful views en route to and from Galpin Overnight Hut. Last 60 m were rather grueling on my tired legs but well worth the challenge. Such a peaceful, special experience. The entire Reserve & route is well maintained and marked - thank you Fernkloof Nature Reserve for affording us such an incredible experience.
World class experience...we went up to the waterfall and then to see the 3 dams...beautiful
We had too little time to explore all the routes but made a promise to come back as soon as possible
Easy hike to the waterfall and dams. Stone steps to the top with beautiful views.
Do it.Great route with multiple options and trails.2,4,5 km trails, with the option of making your own due to the multiple routes available. Kid friendly too.Best is to explore the 3 dams. For the inexperienced. It’s do-able but take your time. There is a flower garden/park that is perfect for picnics. For the experienced, it’s easy and will see you looking at trying different paths across the front sections facing hermanus or over the top of the mountain behind hermanus.
Lovely garden with plenty tortoises out and about.
Awesome place. Trails well maintained, most easy to some more challenging. Go for a stroll through fynbos to a waterfall or climb switchbacks (the Adder Ladderto cross the pass. Amazingly maintained by volunteers who weekly set out a display of flower specimens at the Visitors Centre. Spend the day.
This was my first visit and a great break from suburban Hermanus. Was a bit disappointed that walks were a bit short, but wonderful to see Waterfall so full.
Great hikes for everyone. Beautiful views and fynbos flowers and proteas had started blooming, it was gorgeous.
We been there a couple of times and last time stayed overnight in Galpin hut- great experience!
Many beautiful walks in the hills & mountains. We did the Klipspringer walk. Quite a bit of uphill but not too steep. Lots of proteas in bloom. We saw a Cape sugarbird with its long tail. The reserve has about 1640 plant species (Cape fynbosin its 18 km². (The British Isles only has about 1500 endemic plant species.)
Best routes for amazing scenery without driving too far from town. Route difficulty can be adjusted according to abilities. Some routes are dog friendly
Great place for hiking with multiple trails. Safe and easily accessible. Great views and the water reservoirs are great attractions here.
Well maintained trails in a stunning part of the world! What more can we ask for 🙂
We only visited the nursery which, though small-scale, has strong and healthy plants. The pricing of the specimens are very low for plants this strong. Each plant is properly labelled with large labels which are easy to read. The fine lady who was on duty was the icing on an excellent visit.
Many trails to choose from... Can have a lovely picnic afterwards on the lawns - depending on Covid-19 Lockdown Restrictions
Really tranquil, beautiful and clean. Easy walking routes. There are many routes and different lengths
Very nice nature reserve for hiking and having picnics with the family and friends. Big green lawns with plenty of shade. There is several different hiking trials in the beautiful mountains of Hermanus. A couple of which that leads to a dam that is great for swimming and cooling down after a nice hike. There is also bathrooms available that is usually kept in neat and clean.
Wonderful place for a good hike, though you need to be fit and able to fully enjoy it!
Breathtakingly beautiful... So well kept. Was an amazing experience with stunning views all around...
Good for any type of hiker. Youll find easy to advance routes.
A lovely walk in the hills, lots of routes and time allocations.
There are several hiking trails available at the Fernkloof Nature Reserve with the route to the Assegaaibos waterfall being the most popular and arguably the most beautiful. The route is fairly easy and as the vegetation changes from small fynbos to being surrounded by the forest. At the waterfall you just cant help but be mesmerized by the natural beauty. After reaching the waterfall, which was in full force after the recent rains, we decided to take the Lemoenkop route which gave us a great view of Hermanus. Overall the paths were very well maintained and vary in difficulty. If you are a nature lover and find yourself in Hermanus, this reserve is a must visit!
Fernkloof is 5 mins away from central Hermanus. The nature reserve has multiple hiking trails, some circular. The Lamoenkop trail is easy, with great views. What to pack; water, sunblock, snacks and swimwear - as there are dams that can be used. The trails feel safe.
I took the Threedams route right up to the dam. About an hour easy, a walking stick might help as the last 50 metres is a bit rocky, but anyone can do it! Breathtaking views and Fynbos is spectacular!
Wonderful hiking trails. Take the red one to see a beautiful hidden waterfall. But you should have appropriate hiking shoes :-)
One of the best trails i walk this year and i only posted some photos
Beautiful nature and a range of hiking routes to select from! For all adventurers. And also the option to stay over in the Galpin hut.
Nice walks and also great views when you walk up the hills.
Beautiful nature reserve, the so called "red" hiking trail was a great experience walking past Kanonkop and overlooking hermanus. The trails are for the young and old, exercise or just relaxing walks. Very beautiful.
Best hiking trails in the Overstrand! 🤩Pet friendly! You can go mountain biking. 🚵🏻♀️There’s a dam as well, for when the trail gets too hot. 🏊🏻♂️
absolutely amazing nature reserve. You must visit when in Hermanus. Easy and less easy hiking trails with good views over Walker Bay. The yearly Flower Show gives you deep impression about the wonderful and rich CAPE FLORAL KINGDOM, the Fynbos plants
Nice walk up the three dams valley. Park at the entrance by the tall gum trees, and the path is clear to the first dam. After this the path becomes narrow and more of a scramble. Careful footing required in places and a small rock climb between the upper two dams. Not much to see at the top of the third dam apart from a small pool and waterfall. Head over the first dam and around the corner to get to a small hidden cove.
Beautiful place to go for a hike.. lovely plants and the occasional tortoise or a fox.. beautiful views.. well maintained paths. Excellent staff who explain everything very well.
Great hiking trails, well maintained, clearly marked, spectacular views
An great place for hiking and trail running adventures, take enough water as it can get extremely hot between the mountains where the wind dont go
This place is such a hidden gem. I was pleased to find a trail guide on duty at the entrance who explained the hiking routes depicted on the motorway at the start of the trails. He was friendly and ready to answer any questions about the trails or the reserve in general. The routes were clearly marked all the way and were always visible. I never felt threatened or worried that I would get lost. The views are amazing all the the way and the landscape keeps changing to keep the hike interesting. The waterfall is beautiful and not too far from the starting point.
Beautiful Nature reserve and great trails to hike. Well maintained and will come back again. The watetfall not so great when we visited because of the dry spell in Western Cape. Great picnic spot lots of space for kids...and entry is free or make a donation.
Well worth a stop on your way to Hermanus! If you are short on time, there is a quick hike to a beautiful waterfall. Keep a look out for mountain leopard footprints!
