Feraklos Castle - Castle in Rodos, Greece
A deserted ruin. There is a path leading up to it but its not maintained.Views over Charaki and surroundings are nice.
Perched above Heraki and worth the steep climb to see. Great views of the surrounding countryside and sea.
Great view but it is quite scary to go up and down. Stairs have never been renewed and it could get slippery. Only go up with good shoes. Slippers is asking for an accident. Also saw some snakes up top so be careful.
Cool castle with great views. Worth the steep climb up, sensible shoes recommended. Don’t miss the caves at the bottom of the steps
Loved the small tunnel at the beginning of our climb, the stunning view from the top and the location overall.
Difficult to climb, but stunning view from the top :Highly recommended, just bring some water with you 😃😃
This is much better in real life than the photos make out. Lovely (if not slippery from all the loose stoneswalk up to it, nice walk around the perimeter with great views north and south of the beaches, and whilst there isnt a great deal of the buildings left, its still a great adventure. Look out for the old tunnels next to the path up to the site as well
Beautiful old castle to visit. It seems like its not maintained anymore, so it gives you that authentic abandoned castle vibe. Going here you feel like youre really exploring something. The views are also stunning. Also when we visited, there was nearly no one else to be found here.At first we were a bit put off to go here due to reviewers saying it was dangerous going up there. Luckily we didnt listen to those, as it was very doable and not at all a heavy or dangerous climb. Just dont stand on edges or loose rocks and youll be fine.
Good place, but not so easy to climb high. Quite rocky path. Theres amazing view from the top, especially on Charaki bay, so if you are around, in 1 hour you can get full sight. Main castle is quite damaged.
You can skip it. The view is nice, but the ruins itself are not worth the visit. I mean, if youre bored from the beaches and have enough time, go for it, but there are definitely more significant places to visit on Rhodos.
Pretty nice looking old castle. The castle is destroyed but it didnt take the atmosphere out from this place.
Time has stopped here. Vegetation is all around the place but view will inspire you to visit every corner of it
Nice view on the top. Can be challenging to climb for some, however we managed to climb with 5 year old. There is a cave and ruins on top.
Feraklos Castle dominates the headland between Haraki & Agathi beaches. We saw it from the quiet seaside town of Haraki and for some unknown reason (mad dogs and English men, etc etcfelt compelled to visit it on foot There is a small parking area at the side of the road but from then on its a steep hike up a rugged track which does involve clambering over some jagged and slippery rocks. Thankfully, there are a couple of trees along the way to catch your breath and seek shade. Wearing a hat and trainers or similar footwear is advisable.Once at the top the views are breathtaking. We marvelled at the torquise blue of the sea: just stunning. The area between the remaining parts of the castle wall is covered in fragments of old ceramics (please do not remove themand with a little imagination visitors can image how life here must have been back in Byzantine times. After a careful decent (why did we leave the water in the car?you can either drive over the headland to Agathi beach or head back to Haraki for a well deserved frappé.
Amazing views on the Haraki village and Agathi beach.
One of the best places I ever visit...the energy of the castle is really nice...and the cave is really good;worth it ;)
Huge castle ruins, wear proper shoes to climb up. There is small cave in bottom on castle, check it out.
Its ok if you enjoy a bit of climbing, there are run down stairs from southern side of the hill, would go there just for the coastal views.
Debilitated structure. Difficult to reach for people with mobility issues.Historic buildings not restored
I love ruined places. There is no information tables there (google info if you are interested). Hard to find entrance (from north side, there is kind of stairs). Found tunnels under it. Wear good shoes, it is not safe there. You on your own there.
Such nice place !!!! Could be similar to Lindos
The size of a small village, this expansive castle, although in ruins, is well worth visiting and will fire the furtive mind with questions as to its history
Cool castle, crumbling, it doesnt seem like it will last long. Note that, this is (a free andnot a monitored site and does have some rather craggy climbing at points, so if you are not surefooted, or perhaps suffer from vertigo, perhaps its not for you. Also consider running or climbing shoes, as sandals/flip flops may not be the best idea. If you get hurt, dont expect much help. So perhaps pass also if you have really small kids...
I love castles, saw this one on the hire car map and thought Id try to find it... Great climb up through the cave... Then reached the top... It is a ruin, so not much structure remains, but the climb is worth it if only for the view of of Chakiri Bay.
Beautiful view from the top. And I love old castle ruins. Also, very quiet. Not a well known point of interest I guess. Free entrance and a good climb up.
If youre able to make it up there, you can find amazing views. Haraki, Agathi beach and the mountains. On a clear day you could even spot Lindos. The ruins are more spectacular from the outside, but the views from up there are still worthed entering the ruins
Amazing and magic place. Great view.
Cool ruins with nice views and goats everywhere, but not taken cared of at all, meaning it can be dangerous and hard to reach. Explore at your own account.
This is one of the most ancient castle Ruins of Rhodes with a very big history. There are tunnels all the way from the top of the castle to the sea. It was used from the locals to protect themselves from the Pirates and the Turks. While there visit Alia Luxury Suites for a supper dinner at one of their restaurants.
This seem to be a forgotten gem in the area. Well worth a visit to enjoy the view. Not much left of the castle itself and be sure to bring proper shoes and good physic. This is not a climb for anyone as the road is filled with rocks, unprotected sides and other hazards.
It is amazing to visit such an ancient place, to touch centuries aged stones and imagine historical events had gone here
Beautiful views from the top. A lot of ruins but is a nice way up for hikers! No light on the top so make sure you go before sunset.
The ruins of old castle from XII century, later rebuilt by the Hospitaliers. Left unused after their gave up to Turkish army around 1528.Now its a stone desert burnt by the sun. Available by narrow path without an inch of shadow. Awesome view to the sea and Lindos Bay and Lindos Acropolis.
A roadtrip to Lindos should include his this old fortress, not because the remainings themselves are stunning to look at, or because the beaches around are magnificent. But this will be a trip away from all the main tourist attractions and will most likely leave you in a relaxed state of mind after making the quite easy walk up the hill and enjoying the stunning scenery. The golden beach nearby will give you a good day of fun for the kids as they can walk a good distance into the water and still be able to reach the bottom. Also the restaurant on the beach is not overly overpriced for its location. We walked up to the fortress with two kids, 8 and 10 years old, and I think even younger ones can do it. But beware as its quite hot.
Old castle very difficult to climb to the top. But on the top you have a nice view through the sea and the coast.
There might not be too much of it left but what theres is is worth seeing. Fantastic atmosphere, amazing views and we were the only ones. Just be warned its a bit of a steep climb up
The keeper of the place are basically a family of goats, and, in spring, innumerable bees with plenty of flowers they visit. The view is amazing, the ruins of the castle are instead more significant from below at night when lightened with choreographyc yellow lamps than in daylight. The place would need at least a bit of maintenance of the pathwalk, which sometimes you have to guess more than walk (or maybe not, if you like to be one of the few visitors who well earned the right to enter the site with the hard climb needed), but, mostly, a sign with some hints of the history of the castle IMHO.
An amazing view from the top, you can see all the way to Lindos. We walked up with a 5 and an 8 year old so not that hard. There was the most lovely display of wild spring flowers at the top.
Climbed to the top where the views are worth it. Quite a treacherous climb though! Would not do it when it is wet or windy. Just a ruin at the top.
A free attraction thats well worth the ankle twisting climb up. We did it in flip flops, but more sensible footwear is a good idea. Stunning views in every direction, and the little fishing village below is a great place to get refreshed after your adventure.
15 minute climb to top.Worth every stride.
Nice view. Beautiful castle ruin, not very popular which is great because you dont have to wade among people.
Ruins of a castle with access both from Haraki and Agathi Beaches. The access is not easy, but with sneakers its ok. Views from the top of the castle are amazing, especially the one of Agathi beach. Definitely worth the climb.
The place is a ruin, but also is telling the story of what it was once upon a time, the Ancient Greece. The view is cutting the breath away and the place is so quiet that the only thing you can hear is the sea and your breath and maybe some goats. The interesting thing which you wont find to the other castles from Rhodes is the tunnels, from downside of the castle, not very deep, just perfect to explore and make your heart beat a little bit faster. Take a ride, and if you get hungry Haraki village have the best fryed kalamari I ever tried until now.
Shhh dont tell anyone this place is here, you might have to share it with someone other than goats and birds.... 15 minute walk from the nearest bus stop. Watch out for goat poop and thorn plants.
The walk up and down is loose in places so good footwear is advised but the view from up there is stunning.
A deserted ruin on a hill above Heraki Beach. Its a steep path in places and requires a few minutes of scrambling across rocks. But the views from the top are well worth the effort.
Astonishing views from this ruined templar castle. You can still see some plaster on some of the internal building walls. Very atmospheric and tranquil, well worth the climb.
Just EPIC place... Its full of history, just a little walk to climb on the path (there are two path for 2 accessand once on the top the view is astonishing !!!Look for the bunker under the mountain, I added a place for one of the entrance!
The fortress was originally built in theByzantine era. It was captured by the Knights Hospitaller on 20 September 1306, being their first possession on the island that would become their base. By 1408 it was in ruins, and was repaired under the Grand MastersGiovanni Battista Orsini (1467–76and Pierre dAubusson (1476–1503as a stronghold to protect the area, and particularly watch over the anchorages at the Charaki and Agia Agathi beaches nearby.[1] After 1470, the Hospitallers abandoned all other fortifications on the island except for Feraklos, nearbyLindos, and the city of Rhodes, which in turn were further strengthened. A decree of 1474 prescribed that the inhabitants of the villages of Malona, Salia, Katagros, Zinodotou, and Kaminari were to find refuge un the Feraklos Castle in case of danger.[1]
