Fell Locomotive Museum - Museum in Upper Hutt, New Zealand
A excellent museum on the Fell locomotives used in the on the Streep hillsides.
Pretty cool to see the history surrounding the Rimutaka Incline and the Fell Engines.
Great visit to see the history of the trains used and the line itself
Very interesting exhibition and enthusiastic knowledgeable guides.
Well worth a visit not expensive
Life size exhibits of both fell engine and a brake / guards van on display allowing you to see how the extra braking as well as the extra wheels that grip the centre rail. Loco 199 served on the Rimatuka Incline from 1878 until the line closed in 1955 when the tunnel deviation was opened. Many displays to illustrate the working life and equipment of this unique line in the world. Also many stories describing the social history both from the railwaymen as well as their women folk who lived alongside this railway. How to manage your washing on the line to avoid locomotive smoke! Or preparing to defend her children when Japanese prisoners of war were taken over the line to the POW Camp in Featherston.Well worth its admission for entry.
Well, I had my arm twisted to visit this place today (I had no intention of going), and it ended up really interesting. The guy who showed us arounds enthusiasm was infectious, and I learned a lot. Congratulations to all the people who put it together. That guy Fell was a genius.
Great museum wish I could have stayed longer very cool solution to steep hills
Great history of how trains got over the rimutaka hill before the tunnel was built, 15 minute movie is well worth watching. A very rare steam engine.
great little museum... well worth a 30 minute look around
Very friendly staff who was happy to show us around and explain stuff. Also a great movie anout the fell locomotives. Would reccomend for people interested in trains
Great place to visit and to see and talk about the history of the engine and local area.
Really interesting museum, great value and really recommend a visit!
SHUT!! We travelling around, looking for sight seeing attractions (from way up north), but its shut all week. Very disappointed.
Great little museum very interesting Worth going to see
Clean, tidy and well maintained. Staff are super friendly and very knowledgeable. If you have any questions they are more than happy to answer them. Definitely worth the visit.
Interesting piece of innovation history. Friendly chap (John OReillyon reception happily took groups through and talked about what was involved with running Fell engine over the Remutaka Incline.
Must do if your in Featherstone. Passionate staff do a great job of explaining the Fell engines design and use.
Pretty cool place to stop and have a wander around. - didnt particularly like being followed around by the gentleman there, was nice to be told about the history of everything but we felt rushed , particularly as we had a toddler with us. Id go back, but hope to be left to walk around ourselves 😊
We visited the museum to kill a bit of time but actually really enjoyed the experience and got a lot out of it. They werent actually officially open as we were there on a Friday and the normal opening days are Saturdays and Sundays, so it was wonderful for them to open up to is and a couple of other small groups as well.A really interesting place chocka full of history and uniqueness, the film was fascinating and the photographic study was really incredible too.Glad I had a warm jacket on as it was freezing inside and from the looks of it would swelter in summer.Worth a stop and look around if you have the time, a lot of effort, history and knowledge to be gained by exploring the Fell Engine Museum.
This place is wonderful. Really interesting displays on the history of the fell engine railway line in use in NZ. The best part was the extremely knowledgeable guide. The actual fell engine and braking railway carriage, and the historic film footage and other artefacts made our visit here a real highlight of our Wairarapa holiday.
Kids loved seeing the Hero of the Hill! So much great history
Comprehensive displays and information. Really gives insight into not just the locomotives, but the people/community who ran them.
You get a mini guided tour to begin with. The train itself is in fantastic condition for demonstration.
So many things to see! The friendly staff put on the 1940 movie, which is great. Heaps of memorabilia, and the Fell locomotive and break car are in great condition. Well worth a visit.
Exactly the kind of place that you should stumble across in small, slightly off the beaten track towns everywhere. Esoteric, one topic museum thats so niche it needs a less broad term to describe it, hugely interesting, really well laid out with loads of great things and enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff. Brilliant. Pretend you havent read this review and just wander in randomly.
I have a train obsessed little boy and he loved the place. Very interesting for adult too.
Quite a surprising place. I was expecting just a locomotive, but the guided talk and innovative displays made for a very interesting and educational afternoon.
Such a cool wee museum! Really friendly staff, lovingly restored engine, and so much history! Well worth a visit!
Great informative little museum a must for any railway fan
Amazing piece of history absolutely unique to New Zealand. Beautifully restored artifacts including a whole locomotive, fantastic models and an audio visual presentation of what the incline was like. Its really awesome.
Really interesting place, spent a couple of hours there, very helpful staff. Great videos of the Fell engine period and construction of the new 1955 Remutaka tunnel.
Great place to catch up on the history of rail over the Remutaka rangers from Upper Hutt to Cross Creek then onto Featherston.
Wealth of knowledge here thats well displayed. The original film, not available anywhere else, is a great intoduction to what the Fell locos did so dont miss it. History of the line is well preserved.
Great wee museum in a friendly environment. My 6year old enjoyed short movie with me and loves cap we purchased
This is a "must visit". Really, really interesting for all ages and especially for all those kids out there who love trains. A great look back to the early days of the Wairarapa. Family of four $13.
A wonderful knowledge of locomotive history in Wellington.
Little museum with massive well laid out information!. We were lucky and received a guided tour. Highly recommend a visit:)
Spent much longer here than intended! I especially enjoyed the vignettes of the individuals and families who were associated with the making and early years of the Rimutaka railway.
Very informative. I never even knew Fell engines existed. I definitely recommend that you visit this museum before doing the Remutaka Rail Trail
A magnet for tourists, the Fell Museum is nestle centre of the Twin Messines Township. The Information gives a Comprehensive Layout of Historical Of Photos and Hardware..Esp the Engine
Very interesting. Interactive and informative. Though i am not a train enthusiast I was fascinated by it all
The history preserved in here is fantastic and the short video well worth watching. Wonderful that someone had the vision to ensure the wheels still turn on request.
Great place for a history lesson. Would recommend a stop. It was very cool
Such a great expose of Wairarapa history. Get in there and check it out. Worth every cent and every minute
Small museum, but well worth a look. The movie ~15mins was amazing and well worth the visit.
Well worth a 40 minute stop. Start with the excellent 20-minute documentary and then browse the galleries and the historic train. Little kids with an interest in trains will love this museum. Adults will find it interesting. Older kids may be a bit bored by the old-fashioned presentation of history and technology.
Highly recommended to stop in and visit $6 an adult, the train is impressive. Cold water is for sale and they have a shop with all things relating to trains. Staff are fantastic, thanks to the volunteers who run this place. You rock
Its a wonderful museum, a must visit for all visitors, see the film in the museum on the Fell Engine. To think this old now restored Fell Engine sat in the Childrens Playground for years, until they realised its value, beautifully restored in the Museum. I bought a lovely postcard on trademe the other month of this very train, and donated it to the Museum, they didnt have one like it, so was pleased its gone to a good home, it was in colour as well, the Fell Engine coming up the tracks, could have been around Siberia area of Rimutaka Incline (Remutaka as the old/new spelling is!)Dont leave town until you have seen the museums!!!
Very interesting museum. Takes you back to a different era and really brings home the importance and challenges of the folks who worked and kept these Fell Engines going over the range. Once you drive from Featherston to Wellington, you will get a new sense of awe for the machines and crews that traversed the range on the rail line.
