Calle Luperón 2, Santo Domingo 11604, Dominican Republic, Monte Plata
This concrete memorial honoring Christopher Columbus projects cross-shaped light beams into the sky.
Great historical place to visit about all international cultures. No charge to enter and the employees take great care of the facility. Please acknowledge your gratitude they work very hard.
If you are interested in history, its worth a brief stop. We stopped after a visit to 3 Ojos Park (definitely check that out). The Faro is free to enter, and has many exhibits from countries around the world.
Spectacular structure, supposedly housing the remains of Chrisptopher Columbus. The also have the Pope Mobile in which they utilized during a visit on display. There is a nice view of the city from the top of the stairs.
The place is nice visit but it is worn looking.
This structure is interesting. There’s no electricity inside the building so it is difficult to see the exhibits. One of the pope mobiles is located outside. This attraction is located in an area with higher crime so take care.
Beautiful place with lots of history. But from the outside the place looks abandoned. The government needs to do a better job at keeping this type of places looking their best.
Huge monument and nice view to the west side of Santo Domingo
This place is colossal. Bits of history from each of the countries from the western world, plus a few others.Despite Columbus’s reputation, this lighthouse Is absolutely beautiful and a must see for anyone visiting Santo Domingo. It’s completely free and could take a few hours to go through the exhibits thoroughly and learn about the Americas. Make sure to take your time and take plenty of photos!
Beautiful museum with a lot of history. We visited during the work week and there was no wait. Do some reading about this area beforehand if you can.
This is definitely worth a visit because its an impressive structure and theres an interesting museum inside. Lots of opportunities for good pictures and its free entry.
Place is a landmark, well maintained and free. People are really friendly. How to get to it is a different case due to the traffic rules (no traffic lights for examplebut it has nothing to do with the place. Overall I would recommend a visit.
The architecture is impressive. Walk around to the right of the structure for the entrance. Exit to your right before reaching the entrance. Come dressed in black for a spectacular photo at the grey monument
Loved it, you need a good couple hours to see all the detail. But absolutely beautiful, would recommend it.
Very impressive memorial building for Columbus. It also serves as an exhibition of the world. Entrance was free of charge and I could take photos everywhere. Only a 10 minute taxi ride from the zona colonial. Its wise ta ask the taxi to wait for you, because not a lot of taxis wait there.
"Faro a Colón" Columbus lighthouse, is a mausoleum monument on the Mirador del Este National Park. It is a tribute to the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus in honor to his contribution to the European exploration and consolidation of the Americas.
Not an informative museum. It is an intriguing space but at the end of the day I would not recommend going. If you do go, limit it to a 10-minute stopover for a few pictures.
Columbus put Christian crosses on every land that he discovered, so the pathway to the steps up to the Lighthouse has lots of crosses.
A striking monument viewed from afar, but very strange and somewhat outdated once in it.I’d say worth a visit (it’s freeif you’ve got 15 minutes to waste and are in that area, but don’t make the trip just for its sake.
This monument is HUGE and so full of history! The hallways are like a history/cultural museum of different countries in the world, pretty space; you can rent for photoshoots for about $80, getting a permission with the dates before paying in their office (in the monument)
Very interesting exhibits representative of most countries. Oddly, the US and Canada exhibits have very little, perhaps representing the change in attitude towards Sr Columbus. But its worth a visit. There is the Popemobile used by Pope J-P II.
What a fantastic structure!. Amazing architecture!
This is a very intriguing, difficult to rate monument. Italian born and sailed out to the New world under the Spanish flag, neither of these countries ever had such architecture. If I was put here not knowing where I am, Id guess Im in ex USSR or some ex eastern block country. So, I wonder whose idea was to build this brutal massive concrete structure ??!!But, this strong contrast with everything else you see in DR (as well in all Caribbeanand the importance of Columbus discovery makes you visit it.Faro a Colon lies in the eastern part of SD, across the Ozama river in a huge park. Its around 10 min drive from Zona Colonial, and theres a pretty big parking lot. Heavy police presence, felt safe - do NOT come after sunset as its not safe as police told us (nor theres anything you can do).The edifice is in a shape of a huge cross, enormous in size, like a 7,8 stores bldg high. Entry is free. Beneath the center of the cross is a big Columbus grave monument with his remains as they say (although everybody knows it is in Seville Cathedral), while above it is a crown symbolizing the lighthouse. On the shorter Cross arm are few Chapels with some paintings, while on the longer Cross arm is a total confusion of several interconnected rooms with displays and pics from Japan, China, EU, South America,....really didnt find a clue why theyre there (explanations are mostly in Spanish). In my opinion the authorities could find a much better (and way less expensiveway to honor Columbus - I doubt hed like this as well.TIP: Combine your visit here with the 3 eyes National park, which is only 5 min drive from here (for the lighthouse you need around 30 min for a visit).
Good. A part of history. Interesting guide needed. Why not every room is open?
I may be missing something, but someone please tell me what is the point of this place? Its basically just an ugly hulk celebrating the colonisation and exploitation of Spanish colonies opened up by Christopher Columbus. I get that presidents may like a flagship project for prosperity however I didnt see anything of benefit about this place in terms of either aesthetics, views, interest, spirit, rationale.....looks like some overbearing spaceship landed from Battlestar Galactica.
Beautiful place to visit regardless of your religion standpoint. If you love history, just go inside and they have some amazing historical artifacts from all around the world.
Columbus Lighthouse is a fundamental building in Santo Domingo with an unusual architectural design. Its lights, as local guides assure, shine for tens of kilometers.
Very interesting place to visit. Massive structure, as of Dec 2021 it seems like it is under renovation but it is open with FREE admission
Great place, lots of history
Beautifully made structure with a rich and unique history
Beautiful place full of historic. Christopher Columbus ashes rest in here as Santo Domingo is the first city of the new world. Santo Domingo is a beautiful country full of history and el faro a colon is a place to visit whenever you visit the country.
Faro a Colon is a great historic place to visit in Santo Domingo!
Was not very impressed by it. The building is not well maintained. We were able to go inside only for a few minutes because of COVID restrictions. Would not recommend drive here on purpose, only in a pair with Los Tres Ojos, which is nearby.
The most amazing place to see in Dominican Republic. The faro its really amazing and very very big. Unfortunately I go there at covid 19 period and the museum inside is closed.
Beautiful placeIts not clear whether you can go in by yourself or not.I saw people inside and I asked one of the security person. Spanish is my mother tongue so no language barrier. Still she couldnt understand why I wanted to go inside and visit it.She escorted me from one entrance to another, and felt weird. So quick photos and left. No chance of going around or paying attention to details.Still this is a stunning place.
Going back soon and hope is open. Theyre close do to the pandemic. But the outside is gorgeous
The largest lighthouse, museum I have ever seen. Amazing!!
Faro a Colón is one of the unique structures on Santo Domingo, as from exploring new continent all the country exploring summarize on the related walls of per country.Latin America countries donate too much money to build this huge cross building and dedicated to soul of Christoph Colombus. Definelty, this lands expolrered by some Arabian explorers many years ago, however, didnt declare to world, so stayed as secret exploring or these informations were stolen by European explorers to shown own explorings. On my opinion, Latin countries had to have other building to observe slave trades how many Africans killed on these new lands. Everyone suppose these buildings created by Colombus hands. Many black slaves killed on new lands. Too sad for white Europeans.
Excellent place to visit when you are in Santo Domingo, nice building to the memory of the great Christopher Columbus, with interesting museum on the inside. It is not too fare from city center
It is a great place to visit. I never thought that I would be standing in front of Cristobal Colons remains
Coming without knowing what exactly to expect, I found Columbus Lighthouse a fun place to spend a couple of hours. This is where Columbus remains are at but the main exhibition in the building is about lots of other places in the world, from Latin America to European Union to China. The building itself is majestic and architecturally impressive.
Its a nice place; the collections are varied and stunning. It has some nice presentations!
This is the most beautiful place in the Americas. if you havent been there you will love it this is a must-see. Go to Santo domingo, Christopher Columbus remains perfect place for history.
Faro Colon its a monument located in east zone of Santo Domingo in honor of Cristobal Colon. This monuments its huge and beautiful very visited at day light but not at night.
Looks boring from the outside but the history it provides is just amazing. Well worth visiting. Make sure to get a guided tour.
As soon as we saw this driving past in a taxi, we knew we had to check it out. We almost didn’t get the time to, but I’m so glad we did. Amazing and memorable museum and historical site. I learned more about the world in this place than I ever thought I would.
Must see place. Nobody knows to the end if here lays C.C. One is known for sure: thats most huge monument Ive ever seen. J.P.II involvement is here also including one of the papa mobiles in post assasination version. Good advice is not to wander far away from monument from security reasons.
The biggest monument infrastructure in the Dominican Republic, it contains permanent exhibition of The Americas discovery, the remains of Christopher Columbuss, lot of his belongings, personal diaries, navigation diaries and lot of historically valuable documents and items from various expedition, the indigenous and foreigners explorers culture.
A nice place to get deeper into the history and to see different cultures in one place. Different presentations of Latin America and Europe, and Asia give you a chance to travel the world in one place within 15 minutes)
The landmark and building is very cool including the center piece. However, Its not in a great part of the city, the electricity was off (which a lot of the times it is off in the neighborhoods), and I didnt get the theme of random world culture clothing, and trinkets. Still interesting to see. Its great when it lights up at night. The architecture is very cool. Its sad they had to tear up a whole bunch of homes to build it. The grounds are very large around it (but not well-kept). This marked the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus arriving to the Island Hispanola.
Huge building. We didn t went inside because it was a little bit expensive. Nothing special.
