Faro - Bar in Hobart, Australia
I’m not use to do bad reviews but I’m truly disappointed by our experience at FARO. The service was absolutely terrible, the food was average and the bill overpriced. The only great things were the location and the musicians, but definitely not worthy to pay that amount money for see a nice room or band playing. I would not go back or suggest it to others.
It was an unreal experience after our MONA trip. Dinner and a show…Carried on our amazing experience from the rest of the day. Jason our waiter was so accomodating and very friendly. Will be back!
Sensational experience, really unique.
It was an amazing dining experience. One of the best I have tried. The spectacular outside views, the modern interior styles, the delicious set menu, the accompanying drinks and the live entertainment all come together in a perfect harmony. The staff were lovely.
Sorry to say we were disappointed with the service. Our waiter was inattentive and disinterested in us. The location and room itself are stunning, the art experience was fun, and the food was definitely interesting and yummy, but this doesn’t mean you can ignore your guests. Our entrees arrived after our mains. I had to actively flag someone down twice to order something extra from the menu and to request another drink because no one was paying attention to what we needed aka very poor service. The following day we ate a spectacular meal in Hobart city with great service for the same price. Mona need to pick up their act if they want to compete.
Amazing location and very unique dining experience. Lovely band and dancers. The service was good. The food was delicious but in small portions.
This was so disappointing... I have been here about a year ago and it was a fantastic experience of art, music and fine food but this time round was a completely different story. The restaurant was very quiet and awkward. The staff seemed bored and like they had nothing to do. The food was so average and overpriced there are much better places to go in Hobart that showcase fine food and excellent service. There was a man standing in the corner playing the double base that was nearly comical and completely out of place. Overall the vibe was awkward. People kept coming in, sitting down and then leaving after 5/10 minutes. Wouldnt go back.
Beautiful architecture, interiors and views to admire. If youre looking to book because youre expecting a fine dining restaurant for dinner, thats fine but drop all previous experiences and expectations based on those previous experiences at the door.Pay close attention to your surroundings and be open to all the fun experiences and performances on offer (not sure if performances are offered aside from dinner).Service staff are friendly but they dont seem to have a sommelier. Wine list is kept simple and very, local, I.e. their very own estate on the grounds. Which can be good or bad depending on your preferences. Having said that they have some good cocktails.
Omg this place, never experienced anything like it. Honestly was so impressed from the moment i walked in. Before entering The actual restaurant we were taken through some amazing art installations which were breathtaking. I’ve never eaten at a place where food was so consistently good one after the other. The performance was extremely interesting and a great intermission between dishes. No complaints, fully recommended trying this place.
One of the most interesting and unique dining experiences I have ever had. From the drink, to the set menu all the way through to the dining entertainment that was funny, quirky and provided a sensory experience. I loved this place. The entrance to the restaurant on its own is an amazing experience and this definitely is worth the cost and should be on your list for a trip to Hobart.
What an amazing experience! It was totally worth the price in terms of the ambience, the entertainment and the food. Would highly recommend adding this to your MONA trip.
Best dining experience I have had in a very long time. Highly reccomend!
A really great overall experience. Although the food wasn’t always top notch, most of the time it was pretty tasty and the drinks were good. The show and the experience is what makes it a great time. The performers are awesome and really put on a fun show and the extra art experiences you can add on are well worth it (just made sure you book in early enough or you’ll have to go last after dinner). Walking into and out of the restaurant is great as you get to walk through part of Mona.
A delicious and truly entertaining experience. Yeah, it’s expensive but it’s awesome: delicious food, great wine and performers that give their all. I’d do it again: can I come again tomorrow?
In brief: inconsistent; overpriced; incompetent; disjointed; unwelcome; inattentative; esoteric; argumentative; misleading; incohesive; restrictive...After enjoying the sunset platform, we were denied access to Faros as late lunchers were yet to exit at 5PM. A casual redirection to the bar area turned out to be poor advice as service had just finished for the day (leaving a 1h gap for folks to sit idle I suppose). A welcome interruption by the bar manager let us know that we would now be allowed entry down the hill. We enjoyed the works upon entry and were guided to a couched area rather than our already-set table. The space never fails to impress and raises ones expectations to dizzying heights for the food and service to come; but, these were very far from met. A change of bar staff turned a delicious, spicy and volatile cocktail into a chilled strawberry cordial; the abrasive reaction from our server when asked for a redo was unexpected but set the tone for the night. Much like the "music", the evening was a discordant melody of food, service and performance. The wine list was extremely limited; between the lack of trust in cocktail making and undesirable bottles, there was not even the option to lean into the evening with some volatile assistance. With a final argument with our delightful server about the correct use of "and" or "or" on a menu we couldnt escape soon enough. One final mistake on the bill rounded out the evening; we wont be back.Thank you to the manager for their time and compensation. It was welcome but too late to rescue the night.
Wonderful experience - more than just a restaurant. Attended for the degustation with matched wines. We were given complimentary drinks while we waited for our dining session to start (as we were a bit early for our session). The food was amazing and delicious, with a lot of variety in flavours and experience. The music was more than background music, it was a whole performance, especially when our waiter broke into song on his violin in one of the songs. This restaurant augmented our MONA experience, will attend again.
What an amazing place. The foods were amazing. The experience was riveting. The site is over the top. Such a spectacular night out. Include the James Tyrrell add ons to make your night some more exceptional.
I had such a lovely experience here. The food was lovely, really interesting and so beautifully presented. The waiter was so nice and accommodating. The performer were so talented and you can tell they put a lot of pride and emotion into their work. This is a great way to spend a few hours in MONA. I would definitely go again and would be interested to see what the next theme and menu is!
Simply delightful. First class service and food. Great entertainment. Highly recommend booking and sharing the experience with loved ones or friends.
I think Faro is confused ... Or maybe thats how it leaves its clientele. Is it a top class restaurant? We certainly didnt think so. We thought the food and wine list was basic and uninspired and for the price and hype, we expected a lot more.Is it a cabaret? Maybe .. but again the performers didnt quite hit the mark...So, Mona is fantastic...but the next time we go, we will give Faro a miss.
Did the five-course lunch today which is currently El Culto de Espanã. Great experience all round, desserts were a particular highlight!
What an absolute disappointment! Birthday dinner for 4 of us at $350 per person was not worth the money. Our waiter was good, Spanish food complicated but ok, were told we would be getting a sommelier and museum release wines which I don’t believe we got. Also were told no more wine was available by one waiter and Margheritas were poured out of a can because the barman had finished at 9pm.Don’t waste your money.
5 course degustation with matching wines was flawless. Spanish dancers matched the passion on display. A perfect end to our day at the wonderful MONA
Beyond a bargain! Incredible Spanish degustation menu with matching wines. Spanish music, dancers and performers as well as the James Tyrell art experiences. Would have paid double the amount for half the experience!
Best lunch ever! The performers for the theme Tokyo Punk we’re incredible! All the servers were lovely and the food and cocktails were delicious. Would definitely recommend as a first stop in Hobart. Enjoyed it more than MONA itself
Degustation menu with matching wines is fantastic value. We sat through a 3 hour culinary epic that entertained both our palettes as well as our senses with the brilliant food and energetic performance. Tokyo Punk is an unforgettable experience. Simply Epic!
Stunning venue for a nice meal and drink. The decor is truly beautiful, as is the view! This is a must visit if you get a chance. 😍
Excellent experience! The food was exceptional, the paired wines were perfect, the service was good as well. I can’t fault that side of things. Only let down, and just a tip for any other diners with dietary requirements, make sure you mention it at the restaurant because despite adding the note to my booking and emailing 48hrs before to double-check they had that information, the waiter and kitchen apparently didn’t get the message. They were able to alter the this for me on the day, but caused our courses to come out quite slow.
Do yourself a favour, dont read any further than this review get on and book here for lunchThe food, the drinks, the entertainers, the service makes it all worth it.The price reflects it all its well worth the money and Id be happy to come back agian. The food was ample and paired with the alcoholic bevvies it all worked perctly. Highly reccomend. Best meal we had in Tasmania 🧡
My partner and I did the “Rockstar Afternoon” package that seemed pricey at the time of booking, but my god, what you get for your money - it is worth it!We were greeted by a very friendly guy on the ferry who made sure our drinks were always topped up and was very fun and chatty, I had the best absinthe cocktail at the VOID bar I’ve ever tasted, and the 6 course dinner, wine, cocktails, and James Turrell art, and live Japanese Punk music/performance art at the Faro Restaurant - just wow. Flavours I’ve never tasted paired with art I’ve always wanted to see in person. The dream.Felix and Jay did a great job chatting to us about the food and the art and made our dinner experience even better. We can’t wait to come back!
My partner and I came here for lunch to conclude our day at MONA. We opted for the $70pp three course menu, and had high hopes to be blown away by the food. Unfortunately, while it was nice, it just didnt compare to other finer dining restaurants around Hobart, particularly for the price. The band was fun and entertaining and the setting is nice, but it seemed to lack atmosphere somewhat and ultimately we werent blown away.
Extraordinary experience. The surprise band kept us entertained during the whole lunch.Lunch itself was phenomenal. We got a few different plates and shared all of them.Fav: Gang of 4 and Black Pool
A total culinary and theatrical experience. We went for good food, which there was, but we didnt expect the amazing and engaging performance by the house band. All types of instruments and styles, it was just a great environment overall with both the food and performances coming together beautifully. Make sure you book far in advance! Note: we had an 8 and 2 year old with us who both enjoyed the performance but if you bring children, make sure you bring plenty of things to distract them since the food service runs about 2+ hours.
Menu selection was amazing. Different and unusual choices. Beautifully presented and extremely tasty.
Had to do Faro by night and by day! Amazing place to enjoy dinner and also lunch! So theatrical but I won’t give anymore away! So cool to be in the museum at night too. Delicious food and great beverages! A very special place to dine. Book early to avoid disappointment
The weirdest, yet most unique & amazing dining experience weve had. Top class food, professional service & impressive setting. The entertainment experience was an added bonus. Would definitely recommend as a must do when in Hobart, however be prepared for something different.
The menu did not disappoint with each dish having a unique mix of flavours which were overall quite well conceived. The Day of the Dead main was a show stopper, and terroir as an entre was simply divine with all the ingredients elevated by the local Tasmanian White Truffle.Honestly, the best - yet unexpected - part of the experience was the band. It was Jazz, but it wasnt. It was prepared, but seemingly ad libbed. Incredibly impressive and quirky.
What an amazing experience it is dining at Faro! The experience begins by walking down an entry corridor of light. This is just the start of the art meets food/restaurant experience. The food could not be more inventive, basically being pieces of art in themselves. We had the Gang of Four, followed by the Terroir, Mount Blanc and the Day of the Dead. All of theses meals were inventive and looked amazing, however the Gang of Four and the Mount Blanc were both unbeatably good.Or friend had the F Art Lets Eat, which he said was amazing as well. The restaurant has an interesting set of wines from the Moorilla Estate and beers from Moo Brew. It also has another couple of art exhibits which are well worth paying to see.
Dining at Faro was arguably the best dining experience I had in my life. In addition to that, you also get access to MONA if you have a booking to Faro! I was given a welcome drink (which was a triple sec and ginger), and the food was extremely tasty and a decent amount. The live band also made the atmosphere of the place really nice. They put on such a good performance.I ordered the Coastal Sphere, which is an assortment of seafood (abalone, kingfish, and tunaas well as sushi rice! I have never tasted sushi rice as good as the one they serve in Faro. If I could order just the sushi rice on its own, I would! The value of their 4-course meal is worth it, Id say. I also tried the Black Pool, which is a squid ink rice congee, but its not as much of a congee as I thought itd be! The Black Pool was really, really tasty. Id highly reccomend it. The other food I had was tasty as well, but I feel like those two were the star of the show.Besides that, I also went to the Turrell artworks (which are exclusive to Faro diners, and are an additional feeand I do not regret spending money on them. Out of the two however, I enjoyed the "Event Horizon" more! It was a very unique experience. If I was to go back to Faro, I think I would like to try their 4-course meal and go for the Event Horizon artwork again! I will definitely go back to Faro. (Definitely not soon, but someday!Phew! This is the longest review Ive ever written so far, and Faro deserves it!
Dining in Faro was an amazing experience, from the moment you walk down the blue light corridor to a room with amazing view. It would have been even better if more tables were arranged closer to the windows. The food was delicious and the sphere experience was both unusual and stimulating. The service needs more polishing and some waiters need to be more attentive.
The setting is beautiful, the food exquisite. Live entertainment is very good. The only let down was the service. While we saw some excellent service, we had to ask for information on the set menu, the waiter seemed confused with our order (we only ordered two set menus for the two of usand we had to mention it twice. When the food arrived we had no explanation of the beautiful dishes put on the table. When I asked a waitress what one of the dishes was, she somewhat assertively pointed to each of the four entrees on the plate listing the main ingredient, seeming unhappy to do so. Also when a nearby table finished before us, the dirty dishes and glasses were not cleared away. Overall a lovely lunch experience but service needs more training to complement the food and setting.
Amazing experience with the Mona team. Great afternoon treat. Service was 5 star, food almost there too.
View and food amazing, do the vision experience inside the big sphere - it’s the most unusual thing (not if you have light migraines), book a seat next to the glass windows. Really nice experience, some of the alternative staff are a little entitled, food is exceptional, great wine selection, beautiful decor. Doing the museum beforehand is a nice option.
Lovely little break after walking around the gallery for hours. Treated ourselves to a little fine dining - did not disappoint!! View is amazing and the food is absolutely breathtaking!! Cocktails were divine, and dessert - wow... incredible!! Would highly recommend if you dont mind splurging on a fancy meal, but if youre on a budget, steer clear of this place because it is not for you. I extend a further recommendation to try the pumpkin risotto - never tasted anything like it!
From the beautiful landscape vineyards to the designed buildings laid out throughout the property, you are left in awe at every turn. Speechless and trying to take everything in at the same time trying to find the restaurant and this was just the beginning of our night.I do recommend you book as it is an exclusive and busy restaurant. It was slightly difficult finding the location of the restaurant. Once we parked our car in carpark 1, we actually got lost and walked around the property for about 20mins. Which I didnt mind as there was so many intriguing art displays and structures around which distracted you from the time....lol....I ended up having to call the reception and be guided to the entrance of the restaurant.FYI.... Faro restaurant is located below the cube like structure which has oddly placed glass panels and a gorgeously designed metal and glass bridge.Once you arrive at the entry glass doors you are greeted by the host. She already knew my name as i called a few minutes prior for the directions. She was lovely. She guided us into the lift and commenced to inform us of the venue. We went down a level and once the lift doors open we were astounded by the grand structural entry foyer. No words can adequately describe how you feel once this sensory experience commences. It has to be lived to understand its impact and humbling interpretation. Its "Mind blowing!".The hostess then lead us through to the hallway which enters into the restaurant, and once again we were left speechless. This visual and sensory installation was out of this world. And again "Mind Blowing!!"After a few pictures and videos we entered the famous Faro restaurant. With floor to ceiling glass panels which invite the exterior elements to its interior restaurant. It takes your breath away. Once we sat down our waitress went through the menu and ask if we had any dietary requirements. She was friendly, knowledgeable and great with the recommendations. Now to the food. The best way to describe it would be...sensational fine dining. Every dish was rich in flavour and texture, with delicate fragrant notes and incredibly visually appetizing. The servings are small portions, which i think is best as you are able to sample a range of their menu. And I cant forget to mention their cocktails, they are the best Ive had in Hobart. Highly recommend the Black Margarita. Remember this place is fine dining and with that comes a hefty price tag. But i was more than happy to hand over my credit card for such an unforgettable experience. This place is where all your 5 senses will be indulged.
Delicious food, from the entree, small plates and the larger plates. Great art and great food.
Make sure you book James Turrell’s art experiences when you go, they’re amazing. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️The food was really good, the wallaby and lamb delicious, would have loved to see some Tasmanian varieties on the cheese board.
4.6. This was a terrific experience from many angles. It is hard to know where to begin. The restaurant is located at one of the far ends of the Mona facility. In typical Mona fashion it is hard to find but it’s worth persevering. The restaurant space is utterly beautiful. There are extraordinary views on offer from here and the area is superbly and tastefully appointed. None of our party of five could fault the food. In fact, we were inspired by it in many respects. My chargrilled Bass Strait octopus, green gazpacho, almond mayonnaise, guindilla pepper, mint was a triumph. It is best dish I’ve had anywhere for months. I’m worried that describing it further here won’t do it justice. I’ll just say it was a real treat for the eyes and every part of it provided delight. My colleagues felt similarly about their meals. I was too absorbed in mine to pay theirs close attention. I went for a cheese platter after mains and they went for desserts. My cheese platter was wonderful. Sizeable with beautiful soft, hard and blue cheeses and other lovely elements including tiny figs. My colleagues’ desserts went down well too. No one could fault them, especially the delectable pavlova. The presentation of the food here is adorable. Every dish provided visual pleasure to the table. Each were almost art works in themselves. Other small but critical things matter here too. The table was topped with beautiful marble. The cutlery was stylish too. So were the napkins, plates and glasses. The attention to detail and quality here throughout is very plain.I’d give the restaurant a flat score of 5 going by the matters detailed above and the general efficiency of the staff. You could not fault those matters. The location and ambiance of the restaurant is excellent and matched only by the beauty and deliciousness of the food. These things are outstanding. Our only caveat arises because of our principal server on the day. I must call it as it was. She was singularly disdainful and arrogant from the moment we entered the restaurant. We know not why. She effortlessly managed to appall five affable and easily pleased people in a short single sitting. I haven’t had many unhappier service experiences in my time. It was the talk of our table. We were made to feel like nuisances merely for ordering and every interaction with the server seemed to provide another opportunity for her to look down her nose at us. It was just the one person. The other couple of staff members we dealt with were fine.Several hours later, I was over the bad staff experience and only added a small discount on the top mark for the restaurant. If you’re coming to Mona don’t miss this dining experience. It is truly exceptional.
Great food, amazing in fact , price is reasonably priced for what you get. Service is great and the venue what can I say very stylish second to none. See you again hopefully I try something new and as amazing as last time.
Great menu and variety. Fantastic views and service. Great atmosphere. The servings were very generous, value fo money was good.
