Farmers' Market - Market in Funchal, Portugal
You can try many exotic fruits, but be careful: the sellers are very pushy and want to sell the goods. I quickly got rid of 30€ for a few fruits.
Go to this Mercado dos Lavradores (Farmers Marketand find:- salespeople with whom you can try to bargain the prices as prices are really high in this market because is so touristic;- multiple types of fruits (passion fruit, tropical fruits, albacore, dragon fruit)
Lovely place, if self catering able to try fruit and veg good selection of fish, when boats have been out. Able to buy most of trinkets prezzies for hone but shop around and nay find it cheaper, as well as fruit and veg. Everythings under one roof
Visited this market during our holiday in Funchal. If you are staying in a self catering appartement then this market is definitely worth a visit.
Very colorful items especially fruit and spices. Nicely decorated and bit crowded. When it comes to the prices..ridicules! The prices are for tourists who just pay whatever merchant asks.
Smaller than expected market with quite expensive prices. Second floor is a bit cheaper (monstera fruit €19/kg vs €29/kg downstairs..). Vendors are pushy but overall nice to walk around and have a look. For mangoes etc better to buy by the street where it’s only €3-4/kg.
Fabulous choice of fruit vegetables and fish. Otherwise very touristy stuff on the other stalls. Very reasonably priced cafe with a pleasant seating area on the upper floor. Have to accept that the market area is always crowded. Toilets here are well kept.
More like a touristic attraction nowadays but still a nice place to visit. Tons of fruits of all kind and some very specific ones native to the island. Recommendle.
Authentic tourist trap. Its a shame this place became a money rip-off from tourists. Not even locals can go and buy their groceries from the "farmers market" be cause it is too expensive. There is indeed a big selection of fruits and vegetables which look very good but the prices are crazy and they sell you different products than what you tasted there. The banana-pineapple fruit that we bought one week ago still isnt eatable and it was around 10€.
Very nice to look at, but the prices for the tropical fruits are very expensive. Just looking at it is really very nice, but buying fruit is not so much.
We were scammed. The fruit we got to taste was really nice, tasted very sweet, perfectly ripe. The fruit we bought was just really bad quality and expensive. In hindsight, we think the sample had sugar added to it.Only look, dont buy. Not a real farmers market but a tourist scam.
Loved the wide variety of fresh produce (specially fruit, veggies and fish!and the busy-market vibes. Full with tourists but also locals.
Small market with exotic fruits and some other touristic shops. Very interesting as Ive never seen a lot of the crossed fruits before. Its nice to look at but very overpriced. We bought a dragon fruit and 2 mangosteens, they were either unripe or rotten. Would not recomend buying anything there but if you have a chance, some venders give you samples to try. Also there is a fish market right next to it.
Lovely market to get fresh fruit, flowers souvenirs. Lots of the traders let you try the fruit before you buy which is great. Also you can see the fish market and see what has been brought in that morning and purchase fresh straight off the boat.
Avoid. The fruit seller started with an agressive sales pitch. We wanted to buy 1 custard apple, 1 passion fruit and 1 dragon fruit, but when we were about to pay they said the three fruits cost 26 Euros. This guy is a scammer, do not buy anything from him.
The market is full of fruits and flowers which Ive never seen in my life before. The flowers and plants seeds are sold by the women in traditional dresses.I saw a lot of tourists there.Except the fruits, flowers, souvenirs, coffee and wine shop there is the fish market downstairs. Plenty of regional, fresh fish. The market is located in the city centre.
One of Madeira attractions. Wonderful place to buy fruits and souvenirs. Fruits on the ground floor are more expensive
The place looks nice if you want to take some photos, but DO NOT buy fruit or vegetables here. I was told by a local that this is the place where vendors scam tourists and sell them overpriced products. You can find reasonable priced fruits/veggies in smaller shops and supermarkets in Funchal
The farmers market looks quite nice. All the exotic colors and smells are amazing. However, the salespeople are very pushy, they sell you stuff you don’t even want for astronomical prices. It’s pretty much a tourist trap.
Fascinating market in the old town largely selling fruit but also some fabric and souvenirs. Nearby but not in the same building is the fish market. Fruit here is expensive but very different and the local stall holders are knowledgeable and happy to tell you all about their produce.
Fun little farmers market and fish market they even sell seeds and seedlings. You can try their unique fruits. Good to see when visiting Madeira
Always worth a visit. Lots of local fruit & veg not readily seen in the UK. We always buy lots of herbs to take back to the UK.
It is a very diverse place, lots of wares, food, fruit, fish, and stuff made of cork and leather, like bags, hats, etc. However, the friendliness of the salespeople varies greatly. As a person that likes looking at my own tempo, some of them are very pushy. Thus, the only things I bought were from a nice woman that really took her time to tell me about her items, and made me feel like a worthy customer, not like a source of quick income.
I really expected a big market full of products and stands. But its quite small and the stands are all selling the same overpriced fruits all over again. Some look quite bad and seem to be on their last day of shelf life or even past it.
Interesting place to visit on Madeira. A lot of exotic fruit’s.
Not a good experience. This little market looks nice however it is absolutely a trap for tourists. Prices are expensive and vendors keep chasing you all the way… it is nice to go there if you pass by but I don’t recommend it. You’ll find local and typical markets in Ponta Delgada or Porto Muniz.
Worth a visit to see this market place even if only to wander around and browse the various fruit, fish and flower stalls. Souvenirs, leather goods and clothing etc can be purchased here too. Tourist info office on 2nd floor.
Interesting place to visit. All kinds of fruit and veg, local leather and Ccork goods, fish market interesting (but not for the faint-hearted).
A beautiful place to buy all type of fruits, food, flowers, fish and coffee.
Lots of fruit available. You can buy seafood only in the morning. Too pushy sellers which makes shopping annoying and annoying. The market is mainly intended for tourists. The residents do not shop there. The same fruit can be bought in shops for half the price. The same assortment at every other stand. You can take a look, but in my opinion the place is overrated and has nothing to do with a market La Boqueira in Barcelona
I was not impressed with the harassing/ aggressive nature of these fruit sellers. I appreciate that they’re trying to make business but it did make me feel very touristy. We finally gave in to have some fruit from one of the stalls upstairs.Having lived in Asia for 25 years I know how fresh fruit can/should be at a reasonable price. I should have been more picky to check the fruit I was given myself. But I could see it was overly ripe to the point when it was mushy. For €35 euros I certainly feel very ripped off. I could get fresh dragon fruits from Thailand for a fraction of the price..Warning also for those who get nauseated the smell of fish. Not the best spot as the market with fish has an overpowering smell. The only nice bit was the plant section.
Very nice farmer’s market but do not buy fruits and veg between Monday to Thursday as it is not fresh and overpriced compared to street vendors.
Lovely place. Stallholders keen to share their knowledge and offer tastes of their produce. Purchased a string of chillies to bring home. Well worth a visit and numerous coffee/snack bars there too.
Great market mostly with fruit and vegetable and souvenirs. Also one section with fish.
Beautiful building, worth it to visit it and have a look around! But some of the shop workers are a bit pushy and it can get uncomfortable. Also very pricey
Beautiful market hall which offers a great variety of fruits, vegetables , nuts and souvenirs. In view of this touristic place in the centre of the old city prices of course are a bit higher than elsewhere. At the top floor there is a nice Cafe and Bar.
The place looks nice, but the vendors chasing after you waving their banana-pineapple hybrid trying to convince you in different languages to taste it are really annoying. Some of them from the second floor got very rude once I declined and started to shoo me away.
The place is very nice... excepting for the robbery prices! We paid 17 euros for 4 pieces of fruit. Very delicious and exotic - but with not fair prices (u can find the same fruit for a waaaaaay less price/kg like in the second floor of the same marketor in some super markets.Nice to see, though
DO NOT BUY FROM THIS STAND! GUY SPEAKS GOOD ENGLISH BUT LOOK CAREFULLY AT THE PRICES. Charged us €12 for a date with a walnut in it and €6 for a mango you can buy in a supermarket. Other traders are expensive but worth buying some of the exotic fruit. This guy lets the entire market down I’m afraid!
You can check the fruits and fish here. But I would definitely not recommend buying it. Its typical tourist trap, and you will pay a lot, especially for the fruit. Its better to buy it in some smaller shops in the city :)
For our short, one week stay in Funchal, Farmers Market was the place where we got (not for free, of coursefresh exotic fruits. In combination with famous Madeira wine, it was so tastfull. I can only recommend to visit, to speak with the locals, to make a choise and to buy what ever you want - vegetables, fruits, fresh fish or cheese and etc.
Very unique and lively place. Enjoyed looking at exotic fruits and all the people and action going on in the market, must must visit if you are in Funchal just to have this experience and maybe buy 1-2 hybrid madeira fruits. Prices seemed a bit high but also bough some never seen fruits in lifetime. One of must visit places.
Typically nice island market with a big offer about fish, vegetables, fruits and flowers. Around the inner market, you will find little bars and bistros to refresh yourself with a little coffee, wine, beer or cake.
Beautiful, the fresh produce, some of the attendants dress in customes, the colorfully everything was an amazing place to go, we bought some delicious nuts and some of the fresh produce the flavors are so yummy.
Mercado dos Lavradores tourist market of vegetables and fruits. You can try the strangest varieties of passion fruit and «monstera deliciosa»On Friday and Saturday there is a real farmers market, where you can buy everything at reasonable prices.
There are some wonderful stalls. The spices and peppers are phenomenal. There are fruits that I have never seen before, pineapple banana and others. There is a huge selection of plants and flowers
The market is really colourful and vibrant. But it is overpriced and you can get the same things for half price. Just look around before buying. The art on the walls is pretty and the atmosphere worthy.
Must see when youre visiting Madiera. Beautiful displays of fruits and vegetables. All very fresh...Lots of cafés just to have a light bite or coffee
Nice market with lots of things to see. Pretty crowded but not so much that you cant move around anymore. Most impressive for us was the many different crossbred fruits.
A very special place to visit, though always very busy. My favourite section though is the fish market below where you can see all manner of fish being brought in and sorted. Here you can get a close up view of the popular Madeiran fish - the Black scabbard. Huge and certainly very ugly, it is a bottom feeder which is not eaten in many places. A mild tasting fish which is often prepared in Madeira with bananas, grown on the island, but if youre lucky you can find a restaurant which cooks it with passion fruit.
