Street of Balkan buildings with traditional crafts demos, plus historical water mills.
Nice open air museum which shows Bulgarian customs and craftsmanship. Nearly all buildings are open and have English explanations. There is a restaurant out and inside the museum. The entrance fee was very ok with 5Leva per person, even outside it said 10Leva.You can see craftsmanship and buy the produced items. The complex itself is not extremely huge. We were done in one hour.It was perfect to walk in the warm autumn days through the village.
The Google maps took us to a wrong entrance, but is ok, the place is amazing, you can understand how the village works a hundred years ago. There is a restaurante also.
Amazing way to travel back in time, see live village "technology" in perfect harmony with nature. The village is skillfully brought to life by the various craftsmen who are working under your eyes.Restaurants, coffee, authentic souvenirs, nature, all in one place for a couple of idyllic hours.
It’s a beautiful and unique place with lots of stuff to see,i highly recommend it even if you don’t really like museums since the place has something to offer for everyone ,it’s a perfect place for a picnic too and the tickets are really cheap too so it’s budget friendly
A beautiful place to visit, full of history and recreations of old Bulgarian workshops and houses. Its a very relaxing place to walk through and lots to discover for adults and children, theres a restaurant on site and another one off site just opposite the car park so plenty of choice. The paths are cobbles or stone so wheelchair access may be difficult. The buildings all have descriptions of their usage and in English as well. Entrance fee on this occasion was 15 Lev for a family ticket (2 adults and 1 childunder 3 appear to be free and 10 Lev per adult, the prices appear to be split between summer and winter so its a little cheeper from October to April but we found it excellent value at summer prices.
Very well maintained village. Nice beautifull representation of thé craftwork. The video-presentations in English were perfect. Only minus-point: you need to have cash money with you. Only 1 exhibitor has an electronic payment device.
.The Etar Village a famous ethnographic village in Bulgaria, founded on the 7th of September 1964. The complex is situated at 8 km South of Gabrovo on the way to Stara Zegora and at 205 km from Sofia. Very famous in Bulgaria, it was for me a very nice discovery. Presents a unique collection of the old-times water-driven machinery in Bulgaria. The most important thing about the collection is that all objects are in action as it used to be the past. The only collection of primitive, water-powered facilities in Bulgaria – laundry mills, flour mills, a fulling mill, a grinding wheel, etc. – are located in this nice complex. Super place.
Nicely done, but a bit limiting as an experience.Someone is building a massive hotel overlooking the park + right next to it there is an abandoned hotel project. You can see that the municipality is approving projects for their friends who want to do a deal.
Very nice village and park ,contains many houses represents many traditional professions with an traditional artitechtutes and houses of bulgaria.some built 250 years ago.You can buy some wooden stuff with reasonable prices cheaper than in Sofia. Some food and drinks available to eat and drink.Restaurant opposite to entrance but close at 6 pm.Roads are made of stones like old traditional roads which is beautiful but not suitable for wheelchairs.Entrance fee 6 leva
A beatiful place to visit
It was a nice experience! You can study a lot about the life before. In addition, you can enjoy yourself with a variety of homemade sweets from the shop there🥰
This is an Amazing place ti visit. Full of shops with hand made crafts. Delicious food 😋 very beautiful 😍 also relaxing.
I absolutely loved this little village outdoor museum! Its in pristine condition with functional mechanics, open shops, and places to just sit and enjoy. Food and sweets available as well! I could spend a whole day here enjoying good weather. Highly recommend making a trip out and give yourself time to appreciate all the buildings and displays, as well as snacks!
Unique atmosphere that lets you immerse back in the days. Parking facilities are definitely underdeveloped, so get there early. At weekends may be overcrowded, but yet a must see!
Overcrowded, expensive, almost nothing works. It was an amazing place just few years back. Its interesting to see how people in our past lived but dont go on weekends
Very nice exhibition of cultural heritage of Bulgaria. We liked also practical shows of crafts. Entrance fee was 5 lei per adult. Very good turkosh coffee inside of one of buildings.
It is a great place to know more about bulgarian behaviours trough the ages.
Incredible place! The history, the feeling of going back in time, the people working there... thank you!!! We spoke with almost everybody working there and they all were amazing, gifted people!
So cute place to wonder around with family and small kids. Has pretty bakeries and cafes inside. The restaurant in the entrance had a very small variety of foods tho, do not expect to get full.
Excellent place to visit in order to get a sense of a genuine Bulgarian Spirit!
Spent a fantastic few hours here today. Parked in the lot next door and then spent all morning wandering through the complex, looking at the different buildings and crafts. Theres a wonderful bakery where we bought delicious banitsa, and a confectioners selling all manner of lovely treats including the Gabrovo chocolate, Pestil (dried plumswhich was yummy! The restaurant looked good too, although we didnt eat there. A family ticket cost 9lv - very reasonable indeed!
A nice and unique place to get an impression how life was back in the days. Some handcraft stores and a good restaurant with typical bulgarian dishes. Always a good stay when you are around.
It is a must visit historic spot in Bulgaria that keeps the old craftsmanship spirit alive. Great and delicious traditional food served at the restaurant by the entrance.
Toilets are a challenge, but place is fantastic. Bulgarian and English translations.
My favorite stop in all of Bulgaria, Ive been there twice now and they do an amazing job of keeping it up. Sad to see the carriage maker retired, his shop was amazing.
Pros:-very nice place-it’s a must to visit-really good pastry and sweets in the village-very well organized and cleanCons:-I think it was nicer if it were a little bigger
Peaceful tourist village full of crafts. Best ever apple strudle from bakery. Ok for a break from the journey.
Gorgeous place. Fair entry price. The nature and buildings create a great atmosphere. When we were there we even saw the mill working.
Beautiful architecture and cultural heritage of Bulgaria 🇧🇬.
ETAR - ARCHITECTURAL AND ETHNOGRAPHIC COMPLEX- A beautiful village in Gabrovo, BULGARIA, that became popular because of its open air Museum that exhibit the tradition, culture and lifestyle of the people in Gabrovo during the early 19th Century . Inside this compound is like its own village displaying lots of types of houses for the visitors to see and experience the architectural designs they built before , the materials used for building are also exhibited here. The village is well situated surrounded by greeny hillside. A good place to walk around. There are some inhabitants demonstrating how they worked in the past decade and display the products they made during the day for sale to earn a living....you can see the old transportation facilities they used before, and the old method where they get their water supply. Foods typical from this area can also be tasted. In short, their are lots to see. Its really worth to visit this place!
This is an amazing historical place. All the craftsman could be seen working as they did in the 1700. Place I love coming back to every time I visit Gabrovo. It is worth it.
Amazing place which brings you back lively in centuries. Friendly stuff ready to explain everything. Beautiful even in a rainy season. The coffee made on hot sand was very tasty. In side some pumpkin jam or walnuts pie is recommended.
M’y favorite place in Bulgaria. Is keeping the spirit of many Bulgarian traditions. You can taste even very tasty traditional food and drinks.
Park is okay, but you cannot pay with any credit card, only cash. We asked whether they accept euros in cash, but they dont. Also very hard to communicate as nobody speaks English. Most may directions and descriptions only available in Bulgarian language.
Weve bought tasty sweets and some special bread. The kids have grabbed some handmade toys and weve chosen a knife and an wooden plate for our home and for a gift. Apart from the old traditional architecture we also saw a nice art exhibition.
This place is amazing. The staff is polite and welcoming. There is a lot to see. The entrance price is great- 2lv for students and 5lv for adults. The cafeteria was amazing as well. The parking was overcrowded and we were told to park in front of other parked cars.
This a great idea to create an open museum of the Bulgarian culture and crafts from the past. It takes back in the time and you can feel the spirit. Another great idea is to create this game, that makes you search answers for the different crafts. It makes you not only an indifferent observer, but hungry to find out new things. Its a place worth to visit and its close to Gabrovo.
The place to come if you want to feel out what a Bulgarian village might have looked like, some imagination required to see through the tourist paraphernalia.
I remember this ethnographic museum from my childhood and my memories from that time are good. Now, however, things have changed, most of the craft shops do not work, and some other shops sell products that are not produced in the traditional way ... Of course, there are craft shops that have preserved the traditions.
Amazing museum full of charming houses where you can find a lot about the life of the Bulgarians in the 19th century.Make sure to check all of the shops and little museums on the second floor of the houses.
Wonderful and unique place for a long walk and delving into the moors, culture and crafts of Bulgarian life in 19th century. Excellently kept. One can see and experience how tapestry, leather, silver and other typical of the revival times goods were produced. There are workshops with several generations craftsmen working there. A lot and of the instruments are triggered by water. One can buy handmade unique items, but mostly take a deep breath, enjoy the splendid views and listen to nature.
Fantastic place, a must visit if you’re in the region :the entry cost is 5 lev(Bulgarian currencyaround $3 USDGreat example of Bulgarian culture and craftsmanship as well as architectureYou can have a delicious coffee or yummy pastry or you can buy handmade souvenirs to support the local business .
You cannot miss this place if youre traveling through Bulgaria. One of the most majestic places to observe the real Bulgaria from the past. A lot of working craftmanships, machines and poeople wearing oryginal clothes. Because of the location its not extremely crowded that makes it even more worth to stay.
A must-visit place for anyone interested in Bulgarian culture and history. Proximity to other places of interest like Gabrovo, Dryanovo and Tryavna further make it more appealing. You will be able to buy plenty of hand-made souvenirs and have the chance to taste local delicacies.
Great place to visit . Lots to see and to interact with. Definitely top 3 of all Bulgarian attractions. Only downside was the toilets . There were not sitting toilets and no toilet paper.
Its just a lovely place! You have to see it so you can feel it. Pieceful, beautiful, clean. They are taking good care for the place. Such a bulgarian place, where the spirits of the past are alive.
Fascinating place.Parking was busy but we managed to find a space, worth noting that cards are not taken I side the museum. We ate a nice meal at the restaurant before exploring the diverse museum. Plenty to see and was fairly busy. Worth a visit when in Bulgaria.
Amazing location and very well presented. We enjoyed our visit here, even in the rain. Lovely collection of historic architecture and water powered machinery. The traditional sweet shop and coffee shop were definitely highlights and was a wonderful guided tour of the artefacts museum. Excellent photo opportunities and beautiful scenery.
A must visit place when you’re around the corner! We reached there during weekday, thus only few visitors/tourists. It’s great not only to see the great view but also to see the old ways of how local used to live and produced their own food, utensils and equipment to make a living. Amazing place!!!!
"Etar" was more beautiful than I expected! Although full with tourists it wasnt crowded! We took some great photos and enjoyed the walk. We saw beautiful and professional craftsmanship! There is a shop where you can buy souvenirs, and another where you can get local banitsa and other delicious foods, delights etc.I would recommend you spare at least an hour to explore the Etar!
