Es Mercat - Restaurant in Montevideo, Uruguay
Our favorite restaurant in Montevideo. Such nice people, great food prepared with excellence, and generous portions.
Oh boy, one of the best restaurants in Montevideo. While in town do yourself a favor and go have dinner at Es Mercat. Amazing!!!
Octopus was decent. (No English.)
Yum yum and yum! AmaIng fish menu which is such a treat! Fish empanadas, croquettes and the shrimps… all so good! Highly recommend also for the chill and positive vibe!
Different then outside view, pretty good food, nice service.
Splendid food; we had a terrific paella, good wine, and all at very reasonable cost. The strolling guitarist was a special touch. Highly recommended!
Very good seafood, not the everyday seafood dish, a bit more special
Good restaurant with very nice see food and great ambience. There is some room for improvement in the organisation and the service, especially the welcoming, the serve timing and the general attention.
On a quiet corner near the port sits this little gem of a place. A colonial house with rustic brick walls and matching decor invites you inside with tango, milonga or jazz playing suave in the background. I was only the second table of the night, so no one stressed out and attention was good even from the half open kitchen where one of the lads cooking threw in his recommendations. The bread was top notch Italian country style and went down a treat with the cream cheese or olive oil. Ordered a bottle of Gimenez Mendez Sauvignon Blanc on the owners recommendation to go with my small cod (abadejowith grilled veggies, all fresh and perfectly cooked and seasoned. Attention really friendly too. Scratching my head why only 5 of 13 tables were occupied at quarter to ten on a Saturday evening, the bill didn’t bring the answer as I was only set back 1.690 Uruguayan pesos (USD 38when heading back to my hotel. It would be a mistake not to go even if you only have a few days in town.
The merluza negra, from Patagonia, was simply exquisite. It was, perhaps, the finest fish Ive ever eaten.
Had merluzza negra. Antarctic toothfish here for the first time here and was amazing. I will be bringing family back here to try a different dish it was so good. Great recommendation from the staff!
This. The service I got in this place, the amount of free food, smiles and laughs, was the best I ever experienced in te world. Then, the food. Deliciously cooked fish fillet and meat, and amazing vegetarian food too.
The Merluza Negra was one of my favorite pieces of fish I have ever eaten. Pictures don’t do it justice and fail to capture scale as it is a large portion fit for sharing, or if you’d like to get lost in heavenly fish bliss completely on your own, it is what I did easily and didn’t even bother wanting to eat anything else for the night. Tasted my husband’s Cordero Confitado, cooked in dark beer for hours, which was extremely flavorful and rich, but for the beautiful summer night I was over the moon with the sea bass. Even as I was disappointingly sick and afraid I would be unable to fully appreciate the experience, it was already exceptional. Service was lovely and helpful in assisting us with wines. Even as the last to be seated for the night, service was no less attentive to us than the rest of the room that has been finishing up their plates. I would definitely come back! I would travel back to Montevideo just to have this fish again!
Quite exceptional service, food, ambiance...the whole package! Dont miss this!
Excellent place if you want to eat fish. 🐟Logistics (for example: waiting timescould have been better.
Its neat that you get to pick your order from the board which I assume is changed daily. Also its it a great location for after lunch exploration. Was good, but taking into consideration the $50 meal for the two items pictured, Im not sure how often Id return.[For more reviews visit my Instagram @dannybooboo0]
I think the words to describe my meal do not make justice... Só what i Will say is... One of the best fishes i ever had um my life! Go and find out for yourself... Ask for the black hake! A note to the chef... YOU ROCK!
Excellent food. Fish was prepared with competence. Order half portions, even if youre a larger group, seriously. Two of us basically split 4 half portions of various items. Everything was fantastic, though I wish theyd been more liberal with salt as well as acid (lemon). Great place, Id gladly visit again next time Im in town!
My favorite restaurant in Montevideo. Order the pulp a la gallaga and then the lamb. These guys are sooooo great
Really good food and wine. Usually the cheapest wine are the best there. You can try everything, you will not be disappointed. Sworfish was particularly good and huge portions. it will be good. Really friendly and helpful waiters
The lamb (corderois the best I’ve ever had. Fell off the bone. Everything we ordered was perfect. Staff was very helpful and friendly even with my broken Spanish.
What a great experience we had here. The food was spectacular and the owner is awesome! Thank you for making us feel like we were at home.
Everything we ordered (6 peoplewas amazing, especially the starters we shared, the swordfish and the octopus. Also the Service was great, they do whatever they can to welcome you in the best way possible. I strongly recommend this place.
Fantastic food, nice vibe and lovely owners / staff. We were in Montevideo for three days and it was so good we went there for dinner twice as we doubted wed find anything better.
Not clean, too expensive for food quality. Food it’s ok but not that good as allegedly was. Cups were pretty dirty, same as the restaurant itself. The staff is great and very attentive
Great restaurant near the market in Montevideo. The seafood is amazing in general, the black hake and the octopus were expensive bute VERY good!
Amazing food and amazing service. Very recommended
Phenomenal black hake and octopus. Terrific service coupled with a nice, friendly chef, what else can you ask for?
Wonderful lunch. Seating was tight so we had the opportunity to chat with locals. Make a reservation ahead as this is a popular place. We lunched on a Sunday when many other restaurants were closed.
Excellent restaurant, warm service, one of the best fish I ever had in South America!
Absolutely delicious food. We asked the waitress to recommend a fish dish for us and we were not disappointed. The fish was the most delicious we have ever had and the portions were huge. One whole fish split for two people with a side of garden salad. The atmosphere is very hip and relaxing. It was our best meal in Montevideo!
Best casual dining restaurant in Montevideo. We had octopus which is their signature and black hake, then molten lava and dulce de leche cake for dessert. All was delicious. Waiter speaks Good English. Will definitely go back!
Incredible pulpo and merluza negra! The poached pear with blue cheese ice cream was amazing as well. Small, intimate restaurant with kind staff.
Really delicious food. Expensive though. We had the octopus (which was incredibly delicious and a big piece of octopus, but the center was a little flavorless). I know that a big piece for f octopus tentacle is impressive, but if you butterflies it grill it, it would get more grill flavor and be tastier. We also had camarones al ajillo which were delicious. Menu is on a chalkboard that the waitress sets on a chair for your viewing. Seemed gimmicky.
Excellent food and service. Speak multiple languages. Relaxed atmosphere. Across from wine experience so you can start and even end your evening there with excellent meal at Es Mercat in between
Excellent food and service. Wait staff speak English. We had black hake and lamb meatballs. Fantastic.
Stumbled in to get out of the rain...what luck! As we were seated we spied a table nearby that had ordered the paella and seemed to be enjoyed it immensely. They were and we did. Service was attentive (and forgiving of my stumbling, bumbling Spanish), space is eclectic and fun, highly recommend.
This is, hands down, my favorite restaurant in all my travels. Upon the recommendation of the Guru’Guay, we asked the chef for his recommendations. We got the best meal we have ever had: yellowtail ceviche, Black Sea bass, grilled octopus, and coffee ice cream cake. Every dish was divine!
Awesome! Great selection of seafood, amazing and cozy atmosphere, great service and absolutely delicious meals. $800 per person aprox, including shared entrée, main dish and service!
Omg chose restaurant based on reviews and it was amazing. Very deceiving from outside but the inside experience amazing - the people - the food - start to finish the best- I would give it 10 stars if possible!
I LOVE this place. Absolutely my favorite place to take visitors because I know they will love it. Great food, great wine, great service, great ambience! The food in Uruguay, in general, is tasteless. Having said that, the first time I went here, about 6 months ago, I was absolutely amazingly surprised. Not only does the food have flavor, but it is always one of the best dishes Ive ever had. So far my spouse and I have had the lamb, the black sea bass, and I believe the Corbina. As well as they created a salad just the way we like.Never a disappointment!!! Highly recommend. The owners are amazing!
I am on a long trip through South America. The meal I had at Es Mercat was by far the best I have had on my journey. The sea bass was superb. Entrana was to die for. Excellent wine selection. Great restaurant staff. Extremely pleasant experience
Absolutely delicious seafood: ordered the baby squid, black sea bass, and corvina. All of them were great. Steak was ok but its a seafood place so go wild on the fish! Price is at around 800 pesos/ 27 usd per dish but portion is huge. Lots of locals in a cozy setting. Definitely must try!
Best beef cheeks Ive ever tasted even though its a seafood restaurant predominantly. The chef had to take our order as, being ignorant Australianos, our Spanish is muy Mal. He made great suggestions for wine and food.
Hidden gem! Amazing, fresh, best meal in Montevideo. Cash only, come prepared and have your mind blown.
This is one of my favorite restaurants near the Mercado. The space is very eclectic, the music is always interesting and theres always a little gaggle of regulars at the bar. It feels like Edith Piaf could turn around on a bar stool and start singing. The menu is always interesting and the food very fresh. Bring pesos because they dont accept credit cards.
Goodness through simplicity. Food, atmosphere, music - everything was presented simply and it was fantastic. The sea bass came highly recommended by the waiter and indeed it was the best I have had. Slightly charred skin and exterior blends very well with the sweetness of the flesh.
Great food, music, atmosphere and friendly staff. Open lunch and dinner (check though). Highly recommended!
Excellent food prepared with great enthusiasm. The chef/owner is a generous, fun person who loves people and food.
Great place. I had pulpo and we took a nice wine, and had a great meal. Recommended
