Equestrian Statue (King Rama V) in Bangkok

I always love to come here to respect King Rama V as today his memorial day. Many people come for respect, he has done for many things for Thailand.

It was believed that Chulalongkorn had desired for an equestrian statue since he was a young King. In the 13 June 1874 edition of The Illustrated London News, it was reported that a silver equestrian statue of Chulalongkorn was cast by an English metallurgist of the Messrs. Hunt and Roskell by Chulalongkorns commission. However, there are no other source or evidence that mentioned of this fact.During Chulalongkorns second Grand Tour of Europe in 1907, he visited the Palace of Versailles in France and made a remark that he was impressed by the Equestrian Statue of King Louis XIV and thought that if an equestrian statue of him were to be erected at a plaza between Ratchadamnoen Avenue and the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall, it would be majestic which were similar to other modern nations in Europe.However, there are also argument that Chulalongkorn rather made a remark about the statue of Italian King Victor Emmanuel II in Milan, Italy that it was "very beautiful". This is supported by the fact that Chulalongkorn had expressed his interest and fascination in the sculpture and metallurgy of Italy since his first Grand Tour of Europe in 1897.His remark was later made known to Crown Prince Vajiravudh, the regent of Siam at that time, and after consultation with his ministers, they proposed that in commemoration of Chulalongkorns 40th anniversary of his accession to the throne in 1908, an equestrian statue were to be erected by public donation.After Chulalongkorns approval, Prince Charoonsak Kridakara, Siamese ambassador to France, was assigned to find a suitable foundry for the sculpture. He recommended Susse Frères, a well-known foundry company located in Paris, France because it was satisfactory in terms of reputation, price and experience.Two French prominent metallurgist, Clovis-Edmond Masson and Georges Saulo, were in charge of such work. On 22 August 1907, Chulalongkorn went to the Susse Frères foundry and mounted on a horse statue to be modeled. The statue was initially modeled after an equestrian statue of the Spanish King Alfonso XIII, whose statue had just been cast by Susse Frères in 1906. However, since Alfonso XIII was a tall and slender man, the statue had to be adjusted to the body of Chulalongkorn. The statue was complete and then shipped to Siam, reaching the port in Bangkok on 11 November 1908, which coincided with Rajamangalabhisek Royal Ceremony which commemorated Chulalongkorns 40th anniversary of his accession to the throne, the longest-reigning monarch in Siamese history.The budget for the statue was estimated to be around 200,000 baht but the money donated from the public exceeded the expected amount to around 1,200,000 baht. The excess of such amount was offered to Chulalongkorn for future public use upon his discretion. However, before deciding what the money should be spent on, Chulalongkorn died on 23 October 1910. His successor, Vajiravudh, later used such money to build Chulalongkorn University in his honor.

Big statue of one of late Thai kings standing directly in front of beautiful Coronation Hall. Plenty of locals come to pay respects to their late king. The area is well maintained and special events are often held here. It is located just around the comer from the Marble Temple. Lots of traffic around.

This is the place who can go at night for praying reslect to The King Rama V. Moreover, at this place at night it is an a good place to walk around, good open-air area, make you fresh and reeneegized.

Great historical place. Easy to get here by taxi.

Very large square with the statue in front of a beautiful Palace, the only bad thing is that there are no trees nor shadow around.

A big statue of Rama V, who is the most beloved King of all Thais. Through smart and wise decision making and diplomacy, he kept foreign powers from taking control of the country. He was learned, well-traveled and not only a worldly, but also a spiritual leader. Make sure to visit him at least once, because Thailand today would be very different without him.

Good scenery during night

Its extremely pretty at night with all the lights. If you are in bkk in december, night detours around this area is another great choice. "drive around this area, from here to Wat Phra Kaew is nice at night in december"

Great Symbol and landmark worth the stop and take some photos. It is located just around the coner from the Marble Temple.Especially when this place had festival organized by government it was so awesome place to visit here and take photos !!!💖

We eere lucky to see big festival while we visited that place

Since its near the Palace you will most likely go here to see an event. If the royal family will visit you will see people in traditional Thai clothing and with a bit of luck you will also see the royals.... but in this case be prepared to sit on the ground... Check the event calendar and plan your visit accordingly.

I was there for a fair. Not sure what its like when the prmeople leave. Surrounding buildings are beautiful. Great photo ops there

Although this statue is in Bangkok, the style was influenced by the Europeans. Pretty great location. You can take a picture of both the statue and the palace behind. Highly recommended. Fun fact, the leftover money from building this statue was used to establish Thailands first westernized university--Chulalongkorn University.

We went to an event called Love and Warmth at Winters End, which hold at the area. At the event we were allowed to take as many (of our ownpictures as we liked. There were many food stalls and shops decorated in traditional Thai style and many volunteers cleaning and helping at the event. People were super helpful and kind to each other. We had so much fun there. It was a wonderful family time.

I never expected to see the Miss Universe contest going on while I was there!

Wonderful place to visit either early in the morning, dusk, or later at night. Very quiet and peaceful at night with people praying and Dusit Throne Hall in the background.

This monument is very important to Northern Thai people, but is not really a tourist attraction. The monument consists of a statue of Rama V, and an altar, where local Thais make offerings. It is on a major road intersection, and can be viewed in passing, which is probably all it requires from a tourist perspective.

I dont know if I would have come here only for the statue and the remote glance of the throne hall. But there was an exhibit in honour of Rama V and that made it well wort the visit. It gave a good view of what he did for the country and also paid respect to Rama IX and Rama X. There are also some geocaches near by.

The place is decorated with colorful flowers and there is a royal fair ongoing where you can find and buy our traditional arts and food.

I came here because of festival, there were free suttle provided by organizer, there is nothing to see here except flowers and monument from far

This place is old historical. The King Rama 5 monument situated here. For period of March 2018 have an Oon-I-Ruk event. People are wearing Thai dress.

The monument is historic. The views of the old parliament are beautiful. We went to the King’s event in February. The area was well decorated with flowers. The weather was nice in the morning.

Now Bangkok organize a classic Thai life style in old time period.People dress in Thai national costume. You can rent Thai dress in a resionable price of 250 THB. There are many food and dessert stalls selling classic Thai food style.This event will be around 1 month from now until 11 March 2018.

Nice place to see the old culture of Thailand. Always quiet and calm. We can go and all for King RAMA Vs blessings as he was a very successful King who did a lot for his country.

King Rama V Monument 、。。The King Rama V Equestrian Monument was the first monument dedicated to a Thai king 、 。。The monument shows King Rama V astride a magnificent stallion riding high on a pedestal 、。。素晴らしい 、。。
