Equator Marker - Historical landmark in Mwingi, Kenya
Stunning location, but, needs upgrading. Better parking is needed.
It is a good place with some tourists and a good curio shop
This is just on the road.anyone can stop n take a Pic.
The mystery of Northern and Southern hemisphere
Roadside marker with a locals demonstrating coriolis effect for a small fee. Curio stalls are located nearby offering the usual tourist artefacts. No public bathrooms available.
A tranquil sensational place to be
Very cool and nice place to be
The sun was beautifully warm. It was nice being there. Took pics for keepsake, obviously.
Worth visit...No much rush there...You can have shopping 🛍 there
Not much there just a few stalls and a man doing the water going anticlockwise. But good experience to know you have stood on the equator. Oh you can have certificate to prove it for 600 shillings
Such an amazing feeling!. 😁 I’ve been hearing about the equator since my childhood during geography lessons. I must say I actually feel good and fulfilled standing on the 0.0 point where the latitude and Longitude. Following an experiment from an expert. #Kenya.
Amazing stop over at the Equator onto our safaris Adventures discovery and exploring the Mount Kenya tourism circuit.. follow us on this amazing journeys of discovery magical destinations Kenya 🇰🇪🏔️🌲
Its a small stop just as you enter Nanyuki town. You can see where the equator passes, take photos and get souvenirs from the nearby curio shops. Stopping just to see is free, dont let anyone swindle you. Kaa rada 😂
Cool spot to reach with a nice market next to it, just be aware that the people will constantly try to sell you stuff.
I like the market have every kinds of food and greens fresh vegetable
A historical landmark in Nanyuki, its a good place for taking photographs.
When crossing equator for the first time, take a Kodak moment in front of the board and watch the simple, but impressing demonstration of the coriolis effect.
This is a major latitude in the world at 0 degrees… but the Nanyuki marker is kinda dull with little to admire about. The curio shops by the marker are old, however old is gold, walk in your best crafts!
It was a pleasure to make it to the Equator after a good, long, 3-hour drive. We took some family photos. There is a photographer there if you want to take professional photos. Im guessing its an extra charge..There are some pots of water on the floor, with the theory that if you have a stick in water and you cross over the Equator, it changes clockwise.Be mindful not to touch the containers as the owner of them charges 300ks to tell you the theory behind it.
Really nothing remarkable about the marker other than idlers trying to make money out of some uninteresting demonstration.
Its really amazing.. Learning lots of things about the equator; the forces that affect the northern and southern hemisphere. Great curio shops with beautiful Africa artifacts.
Nice place as weather is good and area is very visible.. but having seen markers in other countries.. I find this to be a very boring trial.. no information.. the artistry is bland most likely by an underpaid bureaucrat who cut a deal for something basic... If I had a chance I would put up a meaningful artifact and include education about the equator.. persons who live there and what curious things happen and are unique for the area.. I would have a basic paid for place for pictures and inscriptions at a small fee.. General more needs to be done
Nice view
It was so cool standing at the equator without seeing it. You only know how to read and can’t see the unseen. Nice cold air squashing on your face while taking selfie’s nothing to forget. Visit one day.
There isnt really much to see at the equator point. However, it provides a good opportunity to take nice photos and a great correlation to the lessons learnt in school in geography subject. There is ample space for parking and shops selling souvenirs nearby. The most amazing thing is having locals within who demonstrate the equator experience. i am glad you learnt a thing about it to explain to children
The guides makes your experience worthwhile. And the vendors nearby sell great merchandise
Nanyuki Equator marker has really transformed. The first photo was taken by my dad back in 2004 (my two sisters from far left , my cousin and I others in 2021)
We had a good brief stop. A friendly local man gave us a demonstration of the water draining in opposite rotations on either side of the equator. We had the children give him a modest tip, however we declined the several relatively low-pressure invitations to visit the gift shops there. We were on a sidewalk somewhat near the traffic and you do need to watch your step near the marker. It was a good stop along the way. If this is your only equator crossing point, definitely stop!
A very cool and serene place to have a photo taken from.
Good view of the equitor line
A must stop when passing by Nanyuki. Just stop here Take photos on this amazing landmark which is free and nobody will ask you. You Can also pay something small to the experiment guys to show you an experiment to prove indeed that is the equator point. There are also washrooms to help yourself and authentic Kenyan curio shops to buy a few souvenirs on your journey (although beware of hiked prices, Bargain as much as you can)
Always exciting to come across such a place! Reminded me of childhood geography classes :)Plus theres several curio shops. If you bargain well, you can get stuff at an affordable price
For the lovers of maasai showls and paints this is your place whenever you visit nanyuki dont forget to stop by and get one
What an awesome experience! You won’t feel or see anything but to think that you are standing on the equator of the earth 🌍, that’s another thing. The water drain experiment on the northern and Southern Hemisphere aka Coriolis force/effect is mind blowing 🤯Oh and you can get a ‘certificate’ to show for it !
The best place to be,taking photos and sharing with friends was the best thing..
ideal. indicator | nice spot to stop and take photos as you cross btwn the south & north hemispheres
This was just an exciting thing to do. To be able to take a photo at the Equator of Nanyuki Kenya..
Had thought it was a magical place to see but nothing more than an equator signboard! The curio shops around are affordable and got myself a makuti hat suitable for a vacation in the Coast. Could be a last resort to get a game drive or hiking hat if headed to Samburu National Reserve or Mt. Kenya.
First time here...Simply awesome😅
Its the freaking Equator. We can do better about this place though. Other countries make beautiful parks in the equator area. Google Ecuador Equator park
Its an experience going here. As soon as you enter, you get harassed by almost all the shop owners. Be warned....they see white people as money pits and try to overcharge you massively. You need to be strong willed to spend time here. Some of the shop owners get very rude if you dont go to their shop and are extremely pushy. However.... I really enjoy coming here. I have built up a good relationship with several of the nice shop owners and have a laugh and joke with them. I always take new people there for the experience.
The Equator Marker is just a chilled out place where youll just pass as you head to Nanyuki town for photos and souvenir shopping at the curio shops located beside the road. There are some locals who perform some stuff with a few little sticks, bowls and water to prove to the doubting Thomas exactly thats where the equator passes. The locals have constructed some little shades to relax as well. Had a good time though despite the rain.
Always a nice spot to stop over while road tripping in Laikipia county. At this point you get to learn about the equator
Equator passes through this point. There is a sign board & concrete plate showing that & also altitude. If you are near this area (Close to Nanyuki townyou must visit it.
Make sure you stop here anytime you visit Nanyuki town. Carry a good camera phone and share the moments...
Remember the coriolis effect in physics? Right. This is best explained and practically done at the Nanyuki Equator by tour guides, using sticks and water.
Youll see water in a tumber turning clockwise and anticlockwise on crossing the equator line on the both sides!!
Nice place to visit while traveling to Nanyuki. The matchstick practically shows the reality. The curios have variety of gift items you can buy as souvenirs.Loved it
Beautiful site to showcase the centre of the earth. There are cultural shops around and guides ready to answer your questions.
It is just meaingful to visit there, nothing much. You can try the water experiment with some payments. There are some masai markets which are very expensive.
