American comfort classics with a Southern twist presented in a renovated firehouse from 1912.
It is an "okay" option among many in downtown Los Angeles. It was one of the only places that was open so I could have a glass of wine and a snack after the Great Western Food Show. The wings were overpriced and mediocre. The sauce bottled as opposed to being made in house. The ranch dressing was the worst I think I have ever had. The wine was okay, although the actual glasses were horrible. The pour was not generous, which is not the issue. It just is not a functional wine glass. I pray that they do not use these glasses for the Opus One that is listed......😅😂🤣
What I liked: The food was tasty.. everything was cooked just right. Live music is a nice touch and creates a fun atmosphere, even on a Sunday afternoon in DTLA. A lot of historic charm here, solid wood, high ceilings, etc. What I disliked: Our server(skept forgetting about us, even though we one of only three tables filled at the time. They were friendly and seemed apologetic after forgetting to bring us water, then forgetting about the drinks we ordered, but it still took away from the experience.I think I’ll try this place again, since it was probably just a bad day.
Best mimosas on a Sunday! The staff are really friendly, warm and welcoming. Definitely my go-to for a smart cocktail during the week, also!
Service was great. Limited menu but the meatloaf was outstanding. They have also added a few items back on the menu.
Really good cool historic place.Good drinks and really good food 👌😎
Great relaxed family friendly American bar food with prompt service. All in an old fire station in downtown LA.
Great service, very tasty meal cooked fresh and really nice setting. Very worth the visit. Very enjoyable time.
Unfortunately this restaurant has seen better days; management is cutting corners, and needs to do seriously better. No tablecloths revealed shabby tables. Glasses weren’t sparkling, overall just not clean. One staff member was clearly subbing in and meant well but wasn’t competent. The food was poor at best. ‘Broccolini’ turned out to be undercooked broccoli florets, over-seasoned with almost raw garlic. Fries were cold. Grilled salmon was over-cooked and dry. Not acceptable at $30/plate. My companion’s spare ribs were re-heated but not quite hot. Just really unappetizing. I’m giving an extra star because the staff were trying to make it a good experience but yuck, probably never going there again.
Great atmosphere. Delicious food. Wonderful service. My companion had the Meatloaf and I had the Cobb Salad. I will come back!
The meal was excellent. The breakfast buffet is not huge but enough to suit a variety of tastes - good value for money. Dinner was also very good, but you must have a reservation. The service was great. Highly recommend this place.
Food was delicious but the service was horrible. Sadly, I wont back.
The friendliest bunch of people you ever want to meet. Clean atmosphere. The food was cooked & seasoned to perfection!
Loved the server and service. Came close to closing the food was good. Hoped for more seafood options. Yes, should have checked in advance.
Mussels were surprisingly on par with classic french. Get extra bread to soak up that delicious sauce.
After 55 degree refused to let us downstairs because a party was expected and it would be too crowded (despite their sign outside saying otherwise), we came here. Second time here and I enjoyed it very much. Now that I refuse to return to 55 Im glad we have other wine bar options not far away.
Its fine. Not sure Ill be a regular. I like that the bartender poured me a choice of 2 when they didnt have what I wanted. Very nice touch. Still, $14 or $12 for my 2 choices isnt much of an option. Lovely spot, good crowd.
I went to this place for the first time and absolutely loved it! Cozy, fresh food and great service. You may have to wait for a little while to be seated, but its worth it!
Amazing breakfast! I am choose Pats Hash, and my wife take California Omelet, its was delicious and tasty!
$50 for 4 Sam Adams beers AND we got automatically charged an 18% gratuity so our bill was $100 for lunch for 2. We both got the cheapest thing on the menu too, food was just okay.. feels like I got robbed.
This was a nice find. Staying downtown for a trade show, was looking for some dinner. This restaurant was a nice mix of full bar and great dinner selections. Our meals were very tasty and well presented. Thanks!
The food is incredible, and the fries are done perfectly! I absolutely loved the music they had playing outside: late 70s disco. Great atmosphere, great food, great service (shout out to Jahmani, the best server). Overall, a great place!
The meatloaf is really good and their fries are crispy and great. The space is simply and elegantly done. I happened to come on a slow night which really allowed me to soak in the atmosphere and appreciate the space. A friend had the chicken soup, which smelled amazing and it was really good. The steak sandwich is delish. Five stars! Highly recommended
I have be to Engine Co 28 in past and unfortunately is was not as good as it has been. I ordered the Lobster Fetacinne and the pasta was not done and there were maybe 4 small pieces of overdone Lobster. Not sure how you charge $30 for a plate of pasta noodles. The other dishes were ok but not nearly the quality it has been in past.
This place has stepped up their game and has really delicious food and stunning service. I highly recommend to take a break and enjoy this city stop for lunch. Covid safe outdoor eating is available and everyone wears masks which I really appreciate. Best of it all, they are affordable too. Check them out!
The food was pretty good service was excellent odd that it was nobody else in the place. Few other customers outside on the patio but thats about it generally it wasnt that busy. I love the look of the old engine company
Never coming here again, the hostess acted like they had a big party inside and would not seat us due to a large party of 50 being hosted inside. It turns out it was not true at all, I guess our money is not good here.
The short rib fettuccine was delicious and my husband enjoyed the meatloaf 😋😋 the blackberry smash was tasty also
Love the atmosphere and the great variety of dishes. Very great chefs 10/10 definitely recommend. Not too expensive for fine dining :)
Great bar in the financial district of DTLA. Close to shopping and other venues. Friendly staff, good drinks, and now that theyve partnered with centrobbq great food.
Awesome pub restaurant. Good food and good beer!
Four of us went for dinner at Engine Co No 28, and while the food was very good, the atmosphere and service were sub-par. I would give the food 3 1/2 stars, but I would not go back due to our experience. Since they are on COVID restrictions we knew we would be dining on the sidewalk. It was fine - we had heaters and were comfortable. What we did not expect was a salsa band playing at decibels so loud we were unable to converse with each other, even when we were yelling. Our server couldnt hear us, and the hostess refused to do anything about the music volume. We literally had sore throats from yelling and trying to have a converstation. After about an hour they finally turned down the volume some, but it was too late - it had ruined our experience. Service started out fine, but declined after the main entree. We waited 20 minutes for desserts, and then at least 15 for the bill. We were seated at 7:00 pm and had to leave at 8:20 to get to our next event, but after repeated requests for the check and to cash out, we were scrambling to get out at 8:30. Since they prioritized the wishes of the band over their patrons, we will not be back.
Came here on a Friday night for a girls night out and it was fabulous! Beautiful scenery, beautiful ambiance, the menu was beautifully curated (at an amazing price), in the middle of downtown, with the beautiful skyscrapers, great customer service, our waiter, Luis, made our night even more beautifully present, but the cherry of the night was the beautiful live jazz music playing for the two of us. Definitely a place to bring a beautiful date to! Thank you!
3/2/21 I had just arrived in L.A. and was looking for a last-minute place to sit down and have dinner. The city is still banned from indoor dining so the options were limited at the time. Without reservations, I was immediately seated at one of the sidewalk tables, with heat lamps. The host was a warm, friendly guy and made me feel welcomed and was willing to do whatever he could to make the dinning experience enjoyable. They are working from a partial menu but still had a good variety of selections to choose from appetisers to the main course. I ordered the chicken which I did not have to wait long for and was delicious. They also had a healthy list of beer selections, even though I was good with a few bottles of Modelos.Given the very limted availability of fine-dining establishments during the COVID lockdown, Engine Co No 28 was a great find, very reasonably priced and a very pleasant atmosphere to enjoy a meal outside of the hotel room, while in LA.
We came to engine company 28 when out door dining finally opened up (todayit was great. Out door seating was totally CDC compliant. They sat us away from others and the heaters kept us nice and warm. The food was great was great as always and our server JULIO made the experience outstanding. He. Gave us great customer service and kept checking on us to ensure our needs were met. You should come. It was nice to get out of the house.
So I had visited this place in January. Since the last time I had gone apparently they hired a new chef, who completely changed the menu and got rid of all the delicious comfort food that they were known for. They had some of the best Mac and cheese around and they got rid of it. They dont really have any comfort food on their menu at all anymore. Unless you considered quinoa a comfort food which I dont!! I was really disappointed and I probably wont go back just because the menu was so different.the service still remains good the parking is always a little bit difficult but its downtown so... During covid they have after seating but its very limited, and its literally on the street.
I absolutely love this place. Ive been here twice already and cant wait to go back. The hummus is delicious. I cant get enough of the borek and the specialty drinks sneak up on you. Definitely give this place a shot if youre looking for a reasonably priced dinner- its great for groups.
I never write reviews, but felt like I had to on this one. Walked in not knowing it was the same gentlemen Ive been buying the best bread in the area at the farmers market on Sundays from. The cafe is impeccably clean, and food is amazing. It is very reasonably priced for the quality of food. And I cant tell you how refreshing it is to walk into a place where the people that run it really care about what they do. Everything is made with love and it shows.
Great place to treat yourself to a good meal. Interesting decor in a nice restaurant.
I had a great meal here. Portions were generous and the service was great. Best chicken parm Ive had in quite some time.
Not impressed. Waited a while to get a table even at 1345. Every staff cant wait to get off work.Cream of asparagus is good.
My ex and I came here for lunch on my birthday. The waiter was very helpful and even though I usually prefer a New York strip, he suggested the Filet Mignon. It was great, and had a wonderful mushroom sauce. We loved the martinis and the cheesecake was exceptional. I wasn’t blown away by the Brussels sprouts, but they were still quite good. I also loved the historical aspects of dining in a once-working fire station.
OMG what a cute place. The floors are original brick flooring. They even have the pole they slid down when the bells would ring. They also have some firemen hats and jackets toi can put on and take a few pics. The staff was very polite and knowledgeable of the history of the building. The food assortment was very wide. So many things that seemed really good, but I could only eat one meal. I ordered the chicken parmesan. It was delicious! Very delicious!!!Overall, this was a very good place and I was glad I got to experience it. Not only ianthenfood good, but it is in a very historical building.
Stopped in for Sunday brunch, waitress seemed new but did a great job. Food was amazing. Everyone in our party was happy. Super convenient to Dash transit. We were tourists so tried on the fire coats and hats and got some fun pics too.
Lemon meringue pie!!! Its super delicious. Great texture, and the touch of caramel is a sweet and unexpected flavor. We had 15 people in our team and 10 of us ordered the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and spinach. The gravy was really good. And, spinach was sooo tender and flavorful. The best meatloaf Ive had from any restaurant. The staff took good care of our group. Thank you!
Came here for dinner on a Wednesday night - they do half off on any bottle of wine (not badand had the buffalo chicken salad and crab cakes. Both were good and portion for the salad was large - absolutely plenty for someone with jetlag.Place is an old fire house and atmosphere looked ok - reminds me of a steak house.Wasnt many people there when we arrive and left.Would recommend
Found this place by chance as looking for somewhere to eat near where we was staying. So a lovely atmosphere inside and so chilled. Loved our booth with the light and could feel the history there. Our server Chad was lovely and so helpful.I had the meatloaf and the hubs had truffle fried chicken. Both amazing and one of the best dinners weve eaten on our Honeymoon so far (2 weeks in).We had to have one of the desserts, hard choice but went for the Lemon Meringue and it was so delicious, couldnt fault it.Drinks were lovely also.Overall we had a fantastic time here and the costs were reasonable (after Vegas and San Francisco and our home town London). Thanks
Popped in for a quick bite before a bourbon tasting and instantly fell in love with the history of this early 1900s fire station. One only has to sit at the bar and look up to see the holes where once firefighters would not only slide down poles but also throw down bales of hay to feed the horses that would pull a wagon load of water. More fascinating still is the wall length map secreted behind the mirror facade with electric light bulbs that would illuminate the coordinates of the fires location.
This place is a hidden gem. I love the crab cake appetizer and the steak sandwich. The building is an old fire station from the early days of downtown Los Angeles. You can still see some of the original features. The customer service is very friendly and quick to offer suggestions on the menu. Its definitely a nice charming business casual restaurant that Id always recommend.
A unique experience. This is a real fire station, built in 1912. There are remnants of its past here: A poll, the original windows & front entrance. There are some photos on the walls and an info sheet at the bar. There is also a donated firefighters jacket and helmets that youre welcome to pick up and look at.Food was great. They have New York steak, linquini with shrimp, meatloaf, ribs, even gumbo. I had the gumbo and it was excellent. I also had some sort of spicy magarita which was small but excellent! I should have had another. For dessert we had creme brulee and lemon merangue lie. Both were sooo good!Service was pleasant. Atmosphere was very cool. Good diverse selection of customers too. Oh and the ceiling is beautifully restored. :-)
Happy hour from about 6 to 10pm daily.Happy hour menu is very readable for the area.It was my first time here and the bartender was very helpful.Got a refresher and ribs.Originally came here to check out the happy hour and Mac and cheese. This building also has a great history.
