El Matador - Restaurant in Raton, United States
Raton doesnt have many options but El Matador has been a consistently good spot for food for a looong time
The food excellant along with the service. My favorite place to eat in raton el matador. No complaints the food is freshly made and the atmosphere is great.
Delicious green chile hamburgers... And huge!
Very delicious recommend it to anyone the only drawback is they close at 1pm on Sunday and closed Monday and Tuesday
Delicious. Love the green chili and cheese enchiladas. Yum
Worst Food weve had in a long time. I was able to take two or three bites of the posole and my husband choked down two Tacos with no seasoning before we gave up and went to McDonalds.
The food was amazing and our waitress was SO kind and nice.
I try to be fair and give everyone a chance. My son and I like to experience the local cuisine when we pass through any town. So, we gave El Matador a shot. We left very disappointed. The food was horrible. Restaurant was disheveled and bathrooms dirty. Customer service was adequate, though not overly friendly. My taco fell apart as I picked it up from the plate the first time. Like, literally crumbled. The rice looked and tasted awful. The enchiladas were decent, but lacked taste. Im sorry, but I would not eat here again. Just awful. Not recommended.
Stopped on our way through and had the best Green chili burgers! Friendly service and great food at reasonable prices. We made sure we timed our return trip to have lunch here to enjoy this gem a second time!
This place is OK. I was hoping to find some really good Mexican food in Raton. The restaurant with the best reviews in Raton was in a gas station and I didnt feel up to doing that, so thats how I found El Matador. The green chile is good and the sopapillas were delicious. I was disappointed in the salsa because while they claimed everything is homemade, the salsa was clearly just Pace Picante sauce.
This place was recommended to me bye a young lady from sugarite canyon State Park. The food was delicious I would definitely eat there again.
Stop by, thinking I was getting Mexican food, so wrong!!! It was the most horrible food I have ever tried in my life!!! I think it is the closest you can get to jail food, and what sucks, it is that I had to pay for it!! Avoid it!!
Green chili burgers evertime we come into town, the best! Only topped by moms. We love it!
Not Sysco-ized so give the home cooking a try. House made chili, red and green, tortillas, beans, rice, sopapillas, everything. Remember what fresh cooking, instead of re-warming, is like.Only 3 minutes extra driving to pass by the fast food joints to and from the highway. Well worth a try.
I hadnt ate there in a while and an OLDIE but GOODY waitress Rosa brought back memories it was great eats but I was unable to get a dozen tortillas but I survived
Warm welcome and delicious food. Had the mushroom burger with green chile. The chile could be a little hotter but, awesome food and service.
Such good food. Try the chili cheese fries with red and green chili
I like the El Matadors food however, it is quite expensive. The service is good. It is the only good Mexican restaurant in Raton.
I was able to get a two egg breakfast with four stips of bacon (nicely fried btw!), four pieces of toast, hasbrowns and a cup of coffee w/ a large glass of water for less than $10.00! The ladies that were working are super nice! Its not a very large restraunt, just a small and homie little mom and pop place but it was a wonderful experience and I will most definitely be stopping there again the next time I travel to New Mexico!
Food is usually good. Too many flies flying around. Could not eat in peace.
Food is tasty but fatty. Great service and its local!
Don’t waste your time. Beef is bland and white color, they don’t have quaso, chips are store bought nacho chips and they serve Store bought salsa. Facility is filthy and needs a health inspection. Waitress was very nice tho.people that are leaving good reviews have to family or work there.
A great local diner in Raton. Both the red and green chillis are delicious.
Great salsa just wish they would ship it that good and the food was great to
Food absolutely great! Awesome service. Prices reasonable. Highly recommend El Matador in Raton, New Mexico!
I stopped here on my way back from Denver to OKC. Usually lil hole in the wall restaurants such as this have the best food. WRONG!!!! Not this one, the place is filthy, the Guac had no taste and the Beef enchaladas was terrible. Fortunately, the manager did not make me bay for I only took 1 bite. Here I was in New Mexico at a Mexican Restaurant and it was the worst food ever.!!!!
Stopped here for lunch. The place I would normally eat at was not open. Ordered the beef enchilada plate. The food had no taste, like nothing was seasoned. Could not eat the rice and beans, no taste and no texture. The beef in the enchiladas was cooked with no sauce or seasoning. The red chili has no flavor or heat. Same with the salsa. I will not eat here again, nor can I recommend it. The local people seem to eat here, mainly older clientele.
I have been coming to this place since I was about 17. I have never had a better sopapilla or salsa. I am actually really surprised there are bad reviews on the salsa and that it is thought to be store bought, they make it in house. I agree the chips are nothing special but I drive down to Trinidad every few months and always come by here for the sopapillas and take a bunch of salsa back to Colorado Springs.
good food but the main course type meals are a bit pricey but all in all food I had was delicious lower the prices and they would compete with all other restaurants here in raton
Visiting from Las Cruces. Just happened to see it on the main road and didnt want fast food. Never heard of or seen it before. Loved the French toast. My friend loved his open face Mexican burger.. Id eat here again. Only reason its a 4 out of 5 is the main dishes are a little too expensive .Friendly wait staff
Very disappointed were hungry service to slow and horrible taste that Not can call mexican food and expensive for that kind of food Not recommended
If you have a chance to stop... Please do... The food is homemade deliciousness.... If you have to chose between Trinidad food and Raton food, I highly suggest you chose Raton El Matador.... Best service and food in northern n.m. and southern Colorado area....
Cant even give this place a 1 star rating. Stopped in to try local authentic New Mexican food and was extremely disappointed with every dish ordered by my family of 4. Food was bland, corn tortillas tasted stale, chips were store brought and salsa tasted like pace picante out of a jar. I cant recall a time of ever going into a restaurant and being so extremely disappointed. The customer service was great and people were friendly but if you are going for lunch or dinner at this place, you will be disappointed.
It was ok. My husband took two bites.. Hint: chips and salsa are the chips you find at 7-11 nachos and the salsa comes in a little plastic cup. Food was not bad on taste. Sopapillias were delicious and huge!!
Wait staff was fair but the cook on duty then I was there should find work in another field like ditch digging. Last time I had such tasteless enchiladas it took the entire cook staff of a high school. It is saying something this low was reached by a small restaurant cook.
Delicious New Mexican food at a great price; always great service. Renovations would, however, be welcome.
No margaritas, thats the first problem. Also, the rice wasnt your normal Mexican rice, more of a bland Spanish rice, so if thats what youre into, then there you go. Fair warning, additional portions of the store-bought chips and salsa cost extra. Finally, there were flies everywhere in the restaurant.
Staff was friendly. The green chile burger was delicious. I wouldnt recommend the posole. It is not at all the traditional stew. It is quite literally white hominy topped with their chile sauce. Quite a surprise when we were served the dish. $7 for a can of white corn. The chips were definitely store bought.
Ate here today. Cheese enchiladas were good. Beans had no flavor and wasnt a fan of the red Spanish rice. Staff was friendly. Wont eat here again though.
Nasty soup. Salsa, chips, and sopipillas were good. Posole was terrible. Tasted like a heated can of corn with pork and green chilies sprinkeled on it.
the food was delicious I enjoyed myself all the way from Denver Colorado
Not the best chili in the world but its pretty ok. The wait staff is nice but slow. The com can only cook 1 ticket at a time. So dont be in a hurry to eat! Really slow!!
Drove through there on the way back home to texas just to try one of their hatch green chili recipes. It was delicious, everything I had hoped for. Anyone driving through there needs to drop by and try their food.
What!! You Do not carry real lemons for my water! Wow! Service was ok, food was ok, but it was better than another Mexican restaurant I ate at in Raton, rice and beans, dont get me started!!! But still lacked better service, better food taste, better umph from inside, Try the burgers, pretty good
Greatest food you will ever eat amazing red and green Chile and the green Chile burger is to die for I highly recommend eating here
The food is really good and the servers are very nice. Its a nice place.
Definitely not the prettiest place but the fantastic food and the staff make up for it in spades.
Forks were dirty, both mine and my childs, over priced, ask for red sauce got green, which was very hot, no chilli Renos
Service sucked. Waited forever to get someone to come and take out order. And then had to wait even longer just to get our food. Which wasnt all that great. Ive had better quesadillas from a fast food restaurant before. Asked for some to go boxes which we never got the lady decided to bring stuff to everyone else but us. I had to basically yell just to get our check. And when the waiters decides to bring it to us. She asked if we wanted some to go boxes. Told her not now and she decided to laugh like it was funny. Staff was rude. I will not be going back again.
Service and food sucked. Fries were soggy, burger was dry, it took me forever to even be recognized at my table and when I wanted a refill on water they flat out ignored me
