El Fogón - Uruguayan restaurant in Montevideo, Uruguay
Top class restaurant, great service, great food. A little bit pricey though.
Wonderful place. The meat was good, the service was good and the atmosphere was outstanding in a little outdated fashion, but very charming. There are some tourists coming by but most are locals visiting. It is a little more expensive then other similar restaurants but they are open on a Monday.
The waiter just didnt seem interested in attending us, we waited for a long time. Not many people in the restaurant, perhaps not a great place for foreigners.Eventually we just left
Absolutely a must go. Excellent quality and service. Bread is homemade and delicious.
El Fogón is cozy downtown Montevideo restaurant where you rub shoulders with locals who come here to eat Sunday lunch. In one week, restaurant will celebrate 60th anniversary!! We did not have reservation and had to wait a bit - it was Sunday late afternoon and place was packed.Food is simple but delicious, our choice was baby beef & beef tenderloin, large salad and bottle of El Fogon tinto. We had tiramisu & apple pie for desert and espresso was the best we had in Montevideo.Service was excellent, despite restaurant being fully booked. July 10th is Father’s Day in Uruguay so I got a present🙂a bottle of wine from the house!I had a small mishap that fortunately ended well. When it was time to pay I could not find my wallet. I had spare credit card but my primary credit card and some other documents along with some cash were in the lost wallet. I was trying to remember where was the last time I used it and concluded I must have lost it on our way to the restaurant. However as last resort I asked our waiter Walter if someone perhaps found a wallet in the restaurant. Walter went to the bar and sure thing, someone found it lying on the ground and gave it to restaurant staff for safekeeping, I had lost it on my way to the restroom. Needless to say everything was there. I was understandably very happy and thankful but Walter explained this is normal for Uruguay, it is a small country, people are proud, honest and kind and will always help.I don’t know if and when we will be back in Uruguay, but if we do, we will definitely eat in El Fogon and we hope to see Walter again!Walter, te debo un gran favor. Muchas Gracias!
Enjoyed the ambience, attentive service, and wonderful flavors. We had chorizo, provolone queso with roquefort, baby beef, and sole parmesan. All very good.
Really disappointing. As a single guest I got a table at a corner with a lot of waiter traffic. I had the Menu Classico and the asado and chichulines were tough, no matambre. The riñones were excellent, the chorizo dry. I didn’t have wine (included 7in the pricebut water, no desert but asked for a potato instead and was charged extra for those. A rip-off.
Very good place for BBQ
The food was okay, the waiter rolled his eyes when my wife ordered pasta. Fully old School grill. Nice enough that we’re not going to be rushing back
Great food! recommended 🙂
All the way from SudAfrica, muy Bueno! Despite the lackof Spanish we were very welcomed and felt part of the familia! A worth while visit!
Place is kind of beautiful and very well located. Food is just Okay. Service is slow... Overall, if youre in downtown and want to grab some food it could be a option.
Excellent food and attention. Absolutely recommendable.
The best meat I had in all south America - and I have been in a lot of meat places. Really good meat! And it was nice to have a bit of vegetables on the side.
Great food, very generous portions!!!You better be hungry. I suggest you split one main course between 2 people, it is a lot , a lot of food! 😅😃. Tried the Asado de tira with green salad and wine by the glass (Local Tannatand the next day I tried the baby beef with baked sweet potato and regular potato with blue cheese.Their service is really good, staff are very welcoming and attentive to requests.I highly recommend it and would come back if I am back in Montevideo.PS: prices can be a little high but the quality is worth it.
Meat was dry. Price was good but qualitiy was just dezent
The “Olive Garden” of Montevideo. Very good service and menu variety but just bland, especially at the price. We could have had two great nights at Los Lenos for the price of our meals.
Excellent meats, cooked to the point. I recommend coming here instead of the Mercado del Puerto where prices are higher due to the high tourist activity. At El Fogón they offer Uruguayan beef and its worth every peso.
I expected more. The meat wasn’t as tasty as I thought Uruguayan beef would be. The house wine was regrettable. Service, however, was among the best I found in a short trip to Montevideo —which isn’t saying much, really.
If you are in Montevideo you must go there! Very kind stuff and everything perfect..
This little restaurant is worth the trip. The service reminds me of NYC and the food was fantastic. From steak to lamb to their kabobs the food was excellent. Great wine and desserts.Enjoy a late dinner and sit and relax with people who won’t disappoint your evening!
Nice place. Good service, big portions
We went to this restaurant as part of a tour. They serve the three courses plates with 3 options each onetime choose (entrance, main dish and desertwe order the steak and and grill chicken. The meet was to juicy and tasty as well as the chicken. For beverages be prepare because simple soda costo you like 5 dollars and a cup of wine 7-8 dollars.
The steak is so good. It is flavored well and it is cooked perfectly (I asked for medium rare). The price is reasonable and the service is great. I ate here more than once!!I ate at the port market and it was awful. Eat here instead. If you go to Uruguay. I wasn’t a real fan of the liver or the sausages at fogón though.
We had already decided to eat there when our hotel suddenly recommended the place after we checked in. The food is great (especially the steak!), the staff are quite helpful and friendly, and they even have menus in English. Keep up the good work!…
The place itself is lovely, great ambiance and the food is delicious! The staff does their best with crowds and for the most part they are on point with everything.
People make too much of this place honestly. The food is good, the prices are only a little higher than similar places in the area. But it makes itself out to be fancier than the food warrants. There much more fun, modern, and interesting places.
Great place to eat with family, also the waiter was really kind and funny. Overall it was a very great place to eat, everything was on point food, service and atmosphere.
Good food..nice place..
The meats were a bit tough and not cooked as ordered. The piccana was one of the worst weve had. We had to send back both plates and watched other tables do the same. They even delivered the wrong plate of food to us, one person had already taken a piece of meat off to their plate and the waiter took the meat off their dirty plate to go deliver it to the rightful owner. There were several dirty glasses, we had to go through 4 to get a clean one free of fingerprints or smudges. The flavor was just OK, not great. Napkins were also dirty. It didnt meet the expectations and was way overpriced for what it was.
If you want to have a fantastic time on a- one-day-trip at Uruguay this is the place to go The customer service from all waitresses is simply spectacular and food even more. Great time, great food. Great place and country! Love Uruguay!
This place is excellent. After a disappointing experience at the port market it was a pure joy. Baby beef was succulent served with yummy potatoes, pancetta and grilled red pepper. I didn’t think it was too expensive but not cheap as well. The service was very good!
A cozy and romantically lit restaurant not far from the buquebus terminal and in a bustling neighborhood. Parking is free for customers in a parking garage you pass just before the restaurant.I ordered the "tourista" that includes your choice of appetizer, main dish and dessert. I ordered the vegetable soup, which was delicious, it was so good I forgot to take a picture, but it was full of zucchini, carrots, peas and squash with bits of onion and hints of garlic in a rich, flavorful broth, served with toasted croutons on the side. I also had juicy and tender grilled chicken thigh and boiled potatoes. For dessert I had the fruit salad, which was light, fresh, and not weighed down with heavy syrup but a light orange juice to keep colors bright and flavors fresh. My husband ordered a pasta with grilled chicken, which he devoured and declared delicious and quite filling. My oldest ordered carne with steamed vegetables, and said the beef was his favorite, youngest got beef also, but I cannot remember which, he had fries and rice on the side and enjoyed his plate also.Food was great, but what made this memorable was the service, Javier was outstanding asking us about our time in Montevideo and making great suggestions. The best was when he noticed my youngest was wearing a jacket with a Superman symbol and said "Aha, I have someone for you to meet." A few moments later he reappeared with a young man who bore a striking resemblance to Clark Kent. We all laughed and the other waiter "Clark" was kind enough to play along and pose for a photo with "kid superman".What a fun memory!
Great steakhouse. Great service. The selection of wine is impressive. Our meals there are always good. I have no hesitation in recommending this steakhouse.
Really good food at reasonable prices
Very delicious food, friendly. Not expensive.
TLDR; avoid.Pasta came after less than 10 minutes. And was overcooked. Which only leaves one conclusion: it was pre-(over)-cooked and then heated in the microwave. Ridiculous considering the price. The pasta had also been cooked in unsalted water. Whoever made this didnt learn about osmosis in cooking school. The ‘pesto’ sauce consisted of bits of parsley and burned walnuts. The grated cheese I couldnt identify but it wasnt anything close to parmesan for sure.My partner had ravioli in sauce so saturated with butter, she could only finish less than a quarter of the portion. Oh –, the ravioli were overcooked too. They forgot the salad which came late enough to serve as the ‘dessert’.One star extra because our waiter was extremely nice.
There is a variety of cuts, but there seems to be only one point for the meat well done. Also the staff is very slow and don’t pay much attention to the customer. It’s a pitty this place could do way better.
Highly recommend, very good meat!!
Great food and huge portions. Traditional Uruguayan grill. Very nice service but you better speak Spanish. Definitely recommend for a nice dinner with family or a date. Wide choice of food and drinks.
Long overdue review. I came here in 2016 for dinner and Ive been craving the steak I had here. Service and food was exceptional. As a Spanish and English speaker, they were able to service in both languages. Gracias!
Great ambiance and delicious food. We had the rack of lamb which was perfectly done and flavored.
This is a nice steak house just don’t expect what you are use to in Argentina. Service very Pleasant and good, has nice atmosphere. Steaks were ok but over cooked. We were part of a large tour group so I felt things were rushed, so I wonder if the food would be better and more cooked to order if you were there as a regular customer.
I give this 5 stars mostly because weve always had really good service here and the "lomo", or tenderloin, has always been the way I asked. I tell them Im Estadounidense and I want it "Humido", basically medium rare. Otherwise theyll cook it the typical uruguayan style where the meat is killed twice, aka, way way over cooked.
Yeah many Uruguayans says that is the best restaurant in Montevideo, its expensive tho for what you get.Service isnt amazing as in other places nearby (still better than Buenos Airesbut it was OK.I got the waiter recommendation from the menu, a steak was good but not what you can expect in this area of the world, famous for that. What gives them the 5 stars is the wine of the house, its great.
we had lunch today at this restaurant. the staff was very friendly and the location near to the hotel. the food was very tasty. i recommend going to the restaurant for lunch or dinner. the staff can understand some english, so yo ucan be safe to describe if you have any allergies.
Stopped there for a dinner before a theater performance. Very average place. I had mussels Provençal and a rack of lamb. Mussels way too salty. Almost impossible to eat. Rack of lamb is not really an American steak house type of rack, but rather half of a rack (at best cut in chops that are grilled. Lamb was under seasoned. Not a good meal for the price. The waiter was nice. I will not return there. Disappointment...
Nice place . Good foods. Excellent service.
From my point of view, its one of these overrated places. Quite expensive and also too much posh. When it comes to food... They do it well, although you can get a better experience of a real "churrasco" in Mercado Del Puerto.
The restaurant is one the main street and easy to locate.Seating arrangements are nice and restaurant waiters are nice and polite. They have menu in Spanish but on request they presented in English as well.Serving is quick, and good options to meal and drinks are available. I visited same on Sunday afternoon and found to have descent crowd while a part of city looks still asleep.
