El Axolote - Mexican restaurant in San Juan, Puerto Rico
Delicious cocktails and very good food. Funky fun atmosphere that was quite cozy. Loved the art on the walls and a wall of plants at the front. We sat inside, the outdoor patio was closed. Great service even though we dont speak Spanish, our server was very helpful.
Excellent Mexican spot away from busy neighborhoods. Great ambiance!
Sooooo gooood. Get the tacos, you won’t regret it. Make sure to add some lime juice on top and a little hot sauce for the full flavor.
Tacos were on point. The michilada was exceptional. Great service.
10/10 best Mexican food we’ve ever had. Friendly staff. Drinks were good! Only thing was the rice was a little dry. Everything else was great!
Honestly the best Mexican food I have ever had, and it’s found here in PR. The Al Pastor tacos and Birria is a MUST
Autentic and tasty mexican food. Service is great. I think this is the best mexican food i have tried in Puerto Rico. The staff was nice, the bar has a lot of exotic drinks, plus a good variety of beers.
Very tasty chicken flauton. It tasted like a burrito, but it was crunchy and the fillings were outside the burrito.
Nice ambiance...good appetizers..tacos were a lil too spicy for me 🔥😝
Good taco spot. Very fun and cool spot too.Service was friendly as well!Really enjoyed my tacos and drink
Awesome and nice place. I went for some quesa birrias, oh man that plate was delicious. I ordered for pickup and the presentation of the food was very good.
Food, Drinks, and service, all excellent.A great place to go instead that 100%hp when you realize that 100% HP actually is the actitud of the restaurant near by, hijos de...
Great place, small perfect for a lunch and go type of place. Great selection of drinks and tacos.
I would say its the most authentic Mexican Restaurant I’ve tasted so far in PR. Very nice ambiance, music volume & natural lighting.Art filled walls make entertain your eye while waiting for your order.Lot’s of artisan Tequila options, local and IPA beers also on the menu.Food was great, pique was great and the prices are good.Parking is an Issue on Cerra St. but there are parking lots near, so enjoy the art filled streets and grafitti walls while you walk.Note to the owner: Gracias por buscarme a entregar mi cartera!🙏🏼
This place is something else!! Beautiful chill vibes, great food and the best Michelada I’ve ever had
Impressive cooking!Axolotle is a Mexican restaurant run by a Puerto Rican chef. Moses, the chef was serving us our dishes for the day. If youre Mexican then you should definitely try the quesabirria and tamale de mole. These two dishes were suggested by Moses and we trusted him and boy was our intuition correct. The tamal de mole was our appetizer. You can immediately tell that the corn for the masa was made in house because it has the same natural taste from back home in Mexico. The mole was sweet. My sister was not a fan of sweet mole but she said an exception was made for this because it was not super sweet and packed a lot of flavor! Moses said that he had learned how to cook tamales in Los Angeles a few years ago. Then we had the quesabirria. Duuuuude. It was so good. I was homesick during my visit in Puerto Rico but the quesabirria brought me back home and revitalized my spirit to keep traveling and exploring Puerto Rico! The cheese was melted in the center and fried along the tortilla rim. The consome was on point! The birria had the classic flavor and had the familiar deep red hue. This dish is served with two salsa cups, green and red. My preference was the green because again, Moses has captured and mastered the flavor. The drinks were so natural and refreshing. We got pineapple and tamarind juice. You can tell that they were freshly made in house. Be careful, the menu might advertise out of season fruits that might not be available upon your arrival.10/10 would recommend!
Great selection of Mezcals and Tequilas
On our first day in PR we decided to have dinner here and it was really good. The inside is small but they have a nice little outdoor seating area. For the appetizer we had queso with chorizo and ceviche. The queso with chorizo (8/10was really thick, almost like dough and there were large slices of chorizo. Surprisingly, I actually really enjoyed it. It was my first time trying ceviche (5/10and it was pretty tasty, a little vinegary. We got a variety of things but I got the chicken tinga tacos (10/10and although they were different from what Im used to, they were really good. Im from NC and the chicken tinga that Im used to has a sauce that is more like tomato paste consistency. Their chicken tingas sauce had a much thinner consistency for the sauce but the same flavorful taste that Im used to. Service was fast and friendly. I would recommend it if youre looking for something to eat in this area!
Nice and friendly place with outdoor patio, waiter recommended me to try birria and it was spot on!Took some friends there a few days later, they made calls to Mexico to share their fascination.Definitely recommend if you’re in the neighborhood.
The service was very good, the food plenty and the outdoor balcony very cozy
The employees are very nice, courteous and knowledgeable about their menu. Our server was Carla, she went the extra mile to make us feel comfortable and made sure we had everything we needed. Drinks are very well executed like, the mixologist really knows what she is foing. Food was average and did not pair with the quality of the drinks. The ambient, music, lighting is appealing and the decor eclectic. All the chairs and tables are different and comfortable. All and all it was a good experience and will come back not for the food but for the whole package. Congratulations to the employees, they make this place shine.
Gem.of a find this place.Initially passed it in a taxi to some place else, but found my way back there, as I liked the look of the outside garden.Full of plants.Mexican food and I was not disappointed. It was delicious.Good service
A gem of a find.Passed in a taxi and thought that place looks nice.So found my way back there. Was not disappointed.Service was great. Food was delicious. Authentic Mexican.Lovely garden area to dine.Relaxed atmosphere.
Super fantastic Mexican in PR. Just need a little more salsa and spice. I highly recommend and would definitely come back.
Juicy tacos, the tenga ones had just the right amount of kick
Decent portion sizes for the price. A bit too much cheese on the mushroom taco. It’s almost a mini quesadilla. Also they charged me $2.50 foe what I think was a small glass of tap water. Maybe they mistakenly charged me for bottled water 🤷🏼♂️
Cute little warm place. The food is delicious. We ordered the guacamole, fried cheese and cochinita pibil tacos. We also ordered margaritas which were watery but still pretty good. They are currently understaffed which explains why we had to constantly try to get attention from the staff, apart from the place looking a bit dirty.
Yesterday was the 2nd time Ive been their. The 1st time the food and the service was good, but this 2nd time the food was very good but the service was not at all good. There was to many issues with the waiter and we did not enjoy our dinner.
They have an amazing dessert, fried cheesecake! The place just has a great vibe and the people are great!
Service needs to improve. You dont feel a sense of urgency with the staff and our server seemed confused and inexperienced. We were left at the door waiting to clean our table which the server totally forgot about us. Tacos had good flavor but they only used one tortilla which made them crumble and difficult to eat. And prices were somewhat high for the place
Incredible meal and experience. Moses was a professional through and through. Fantastic recommendations and service. The tequila choices are phonomenal and the food is delicious.
Terrible experience after being seated on the empty restaurant it was only us and one more table I was told to get up and leave because the kitchen staff was getting ready to leave.Since they kicked us from the place we were politetly leaving as we walked out the other staff wanted to served us after they saw our disgusted faces.I grew up in this neighborhood and neither my family or I have any personal issues with anyone check your camara so you can see for yourselfI HAVE NO NEED MY FAMILY also have businesses and we know how to communicate and treat peopleWHAT A NICE FIRST EXPERIENCE NEVER COMING BACK AGAIN. STAFF TRULY RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL, SPECIFICALLY THAT CLOSING TIME WAS SUPPOSED TO BE 10:30 PM AND WE ARRIVED AT 9:25PM
Authentic Mexican food, we will definitely be back!!!
Environment, food, and service: spectacular. Full of amusing art pieces and authentic food. Everything was incredible and there’s no reason for you to not visit this amazing restaurant! (Preferably you visit on a not so busy day because of limited parking)
After showing my vax and Id cards, I was seated. I scanned the QR and looked at the menu for 5 min. After making my choice I was ready. There was 3 women employees talking and laughing with the bartender. I waited 5 min and still was not greeted even though two of the girls looked at me several time. After a few more minutes, a male server past me and didnt look at me. He went outside instead. I looked over at the bar again and one of the girls was looking at me again. I guess she was too busy having fun to come over and take the order. At least someone could say We will be right with you and I would have been fine. But being unacknowledged, even though three workers already looked right at me and made eye contact is not a good thing. I got up and left. Im not wasting my money on this place, and neither should anyone else. Its also overpriced. $18 for 3 tacos? Give me a break.
Great authentic Mexican restaurant with delicious vegetarian options. The mushroom and fish tacos were the best weve had anywhere! Great outdoor and indoor seating options.
A very simple but beautiful places to go and enjoy the food! bring your families and friends and enjoy one of the most closest Mexican experiences you can find in Puerto Rico!
Stopped in here for a drink and a quick bite. The service was excellent and the place has some lovely art all over the walls. The spicy margaritas con are great and the champioñes were delicious!
Beautiful authentic food, blue corn tortillas are fresh and the taco of the day (pork bellywas a transcendent experience to say the least. Dont get me started on the drinks. Definitely will go back
Just had the carnitas tacos and a couple bottles of Medalla. Excellent service, flavor, and atmosphere. Definitely my favorite pit-stop when touring the Calle Cerra street art.
Its located in a area that has gotten a facelift as of the last few years and its still a work in progress. The restaurant is beautifully decorated with a young, modern vibe. The food was very good, loved the queso fundido which you can order with chorizo or mushrooms but I had by itself and was outstanding. I had the Tinga tacos $12 which had three of them with rice and refrito and were very good also, a bit spicy which I love. The Margaritas a bit on the expensive side $9 but worth it, very good and with a good amount of alcohol. Its a modern style Mexican restaurant with good food and vibe a bit on the expensive side.
Bloody Mary with Mezcal is a must try! So good here! Cocktails and food are on point. Ask if they have the off menu birria tacos!
Best mexican outside of Mexico. Very good food and cocktails!
The food taste is very good and nicely presented. The place has comfortable spacing between tables for a local restaurant. Drinks are very good, too! I ordered tacos al pastor($14with a few margaritas and I consider them one of the best, really al pastor taste, tacos Ive had in years...! Parking is private just steps across the street for $5.00. Worth the visit for a nice, cozy meal with friend(sif you are around.
Excellent atmosphere and delicious food. The Guacamole is fresh and is an very large portion and Tostadas are amazing. Service is a little slow but is very relaxing. Also the menu is only in Spanish do recommend Google Translation App to help you order.
Good food, nice atmosphere with outdoor seating. Had the guyanaba agua fresca, and tinga tostada (picturedwhich was excellently prepared. This is located in the hood so that detracts from the experience a bit.
Very authentic Mexican restaurant with great selection of tacos. Try the "lengua", "nopales" and "chicharrones en salsa verde" ones. The horchata is pretty good as well.
Excellent authentic Mexican food. Great tequila varieties.
Super tasty food. A really nice spot that is open quite a bit longer than most places. The staff is extremely nice and accommodating! The ambiance is really nice as well.I hope to come back when I’m in San Juan again.
Amazing tacos, rice and beans! While on vacation we ate at this local spot and loved it!
