El Asador - Seafood restaurant in San Juan, Puerto Rico
El Asador in San Juan
Description
Privilege
The food was amazing and service matched! We will definitely be back when we return to the island....stay safe!
MoreCame at 2 PM, it was empty and only one waitress for the whole place. Nice set up. She was nice. Expensive and not the the best quality. Had mofongo and pasta.Coconut flan not good. Guava flan was better. A lot of room for improvement .
MoreThe Morongo was made from plantain. That was good. The accompanying salad that was laid out of the very same plate was good. What wasnt that great was the Carne fritas. It was dry and tough. Over cooked to the core. Not a fan. The linguine with shrimp, Mahi Mahi, and red snapper were all delicious. But the fried pork was not that great.
MoreCool looking place. The server was very nice, but after dropping off food, she didnt check on us once. Steak was not good and overcooked. Mofongo was too dry and lacked flavor. Grilled chicken was good. Overall, disappointed. Bummer.
MoreLovely food an Great cocktails. Fairly slow service and slight communication difficulties but overall great experience
MoreFood was DELICIOUS!! We came at a really good time because people were lined up for a long time outside. I suggest making a reservation. We didnt, but noticed everyone after us would have benefited from having one.The restaurant is beautiful. The only reason I didnt give it a 5, is the amount of time it took to finally get our check. I understand that PR is known for taking their time, but we were ready to go 30-40 min before we could secure our check.
MoreI was so upset with the experience because my fiancé and I had walked by this place two days in a row excited to try it. We finally got a chance to go and it was not a good experience. We got two taco appetizers, a bottle of water, and a Coke Zero coming to $45 not including tip. The tacos were cold, the tortillas fell apart when you grabbed it, and the server only came by to take our order never checking on us again. In addition, there’s only two tacos to an order so if you’re going to charge $15 you should probably have more and/or advertise there’s only two. You can absolutely find better food and service for far cheeper if you keep walking a couple of feet which is exactly what we did.
MoreGreat location in Old San Juan, very nice restaurant, very good service, love their Mojitos, the Lobste Risotto and house Ceviche.
MoreHad a pina colada and 2 tiny fish tacos ok at best. In Mexico they are $1 my bill was $30. So a $15 drink and 2 $7.50 tacos. Not even close to worth it. Service was good.
MoreBeautiful atmosphere. Bad food. Calamari looked and tasted like it came from the frozen food section of a super market. Salmon was dry and the Grouper bland. It just felt like they didnt put much effort into the food.
MoreThe food was very disappointing. Neither of us finished our plates. For the quality of food too price was too much. I can say that the atmosphere was nice which is why we were so disappointed
MoreGreat food. Shrimp linguine with butter was amazing. But the mushroom risotto took the spotlight. You have to try! The place is very nice and quaint. The breeze was perfect after the hot afternoon walk.
MorePiña Colada was the highlight of the meal.Mofongo was decent, but could have been better. Food was tasty, just not quite what I’d expect in terms of value.Price / value : -1 starService: -0.5 star
MoreThe atmosphere here is AMAZING. The architecture of the building is INSANE. it’s absolutely lovely. If you love good food and a building that’s literally a work of art, GO HERE. You can sit in a courtyard, by a window open to an adorable alleyway—it’s amazing. I could look at the architecture all day. It’s heartbreakingly lovely. I didn’t get enough pictures because it’s busy. But HIGHLY RECOMMEND.
MoreI cannot recommend the risotto enough!!! 😍😍😍😍😍 Absolutely delicious! Skip the linguini though, the garlic sauce was tasteless and the white sauce was very watery and also not very tasty, had to add a lot of salt and pepper. GET THE RISOTTO YOU WONT REGRET IT!!!! ❤️
MoreIt is a great venue and the staff are very nice! We had good service and enjoyed our time. However, the food was sub-par for what is expected for the price. They weren’t bad by any means, but just not anything special than what you will find in a fast food kiosks!
MoreAfter 6 trips to San Juan this is our favorite seafood restaurant. Amazing sangria and the whole snapper with garlic sauce was amazing.
MoreHere, chewy orzo pasta drowned in canned Alfredo sauce masquerades as “mushroom risotto.” Fish tacos are some warmed ceviche and a few wilted lettuce leafs thrown on top of store-bought corn tortillas that disintegrate before they reach your mouth. The bean salad was literally drained canned beans tossed with garlic from a jar (not freshwith some raw onions on top. Canned pineapple juice. If I wanted lunch out of a can, I would’ve gone to the supermarket and it would’ve been considerably cheaper. I feel cheated. I am giving 2 stars only because the space itself is lovely and the waiter was prompt and took off the offending items (most of our mealfrom the check. Spare yourself a bad meal, and go across the street to La Madre.
MoreThe food was good at El Asador. I had mofongo with carne frita and calamari, and a mojito. It was fresh and tasty. Unfortunately the service was not great, and the food was very expensive. You can find comparable meals at other restaurants in Old San Juan for less than half of the price here.
MoreFood is good and their mojitos will knock you out. But yeesh, their mofongo is pricey, even for OSJ. Lots of reviews are praising the value, which is crazy to me. If you’re a pasty-white tourist like me and you just got to OSJ, do yourself a favor — do a little more wandering, and you can find great mofongo for a lot less.Let’s all do our best to patronize restaurants that don’t prey on tourists, or at the very least, prey on them a little less brazenly.
MoreWe started with the fried calamari as an appetizer. I had the Seafood Mofongo, wife had the grilled mahi mahi with lemon, and of course a delicious coconut flan for dessert. This was our second trip to this restaurant during our visit to Puerto Rico. The food was delicious, the price is quite reasonable for the quality, and the ambience is just awesome. We dig the old world vibe with the decor and the smooth jazz playing in the background. Our waitstaff was excellent as well. If we ever come back to Old San Juan, you can bet we will return to El Asador!!!
MoreFood took over an hour to arrive. Seafood Risotto tasted good but hardly a couple of shrimps in it - nothing else. Seafood soup was some broth with shrimp added into it. Pork chops were hard to chew and were served without a steak knife and pretty much inedible. Fish tacos fell apart even before they made it from the plate into the mouth. We ate at 8 different places in 5 days and all other restaurants were amazing; this one set the bar down to pathetic! Waiter was very unapologetic as if he was expecting our disappointment. A Sad, very sad place. If you want consistent quality great food, eat at La Madre!!
MoreBartender was great, but prices were inflated beyond the value. Lunch cost $100 and we ate better food with larger portions pretty much our entire stay in Puerto Rico.I’d skip this one unless you’re in a pinch.
MoreDo NOT eat here. I was a solo diner, after I ordered and got something that wasn’t even resembling to a seafood risotto (rather, it was pasta with some unknown fish and sharp shells inside), they promptly ignored me after they had few group of people coming in. I had to call them and draw their attention to the “risotto” and the unpleasant shells, but, they just said the shells were normal so I asked for my check to leave that place ASAP. It turned out, that risotto “aperitivo” version and a bottle of water was about $$20 (the little bottle of water was $$ 3.50). After protesting, they make me pay only for the risotto that I didn’t have. STAY AWAY from this place.
MoreThe ceviche was mediocre, the service was horrible, the drinks undrinkable. The entres were poor: they gave me orzo pasta but they called it risotto, my husband got the seafood linguini with 3 shrimp and a sprinkle of other unknown fish. The tab was over $100. In hindsight we should have paid the bill after the first sip and the first bite and gone somewhere else for dinner.
MoreLiterally every single dish was delicious we had ten people and each got something different and there wasnt an "okay" meal on the table they all set our sense alight and made our night.
MoreSo, the food was amazing! Me and my family loved our food. I had the salmon filet and I enjoyed it very much. However, the service was horrendous. I was here for and hour and a half waiting for our food. The waiter said five more minutes about fifteen times. Overall, good experience! Would recommend!
MoreFood is solid if a bit saucy. I had the grilled grouper in garlic oil with mushroom risotto. Very nice but wish the sauce was a bit less. Wife had the mahi mahi in mango sauce. It was over cooked and we didn’t like it. Kids had the linguini with shrimp - good but again saucy. Service was good. Wine list was non existent.
MoreWe ate there 2 nights of our 5. The food is amazing. The atmosphere is fantastic. Charlie and Abel were excellent hosts/servers. We will always go when in town. Thank you El Asador! Ceviche/tostones and Calamari/tartar saucepictured
MoreLoved it. Very romantic, excellent food and service. Would certainly come back. Our server had very good recommendations for local beaches too.
MoreExcellent place for food and drink. Mojitos were made well, perfect with no sweetener. Mofongo is delicious. The ambiance and simple decor is quite a pleasure. Definitely a beautiful place
MoreThe mojitos and ceviche were delicious. Service was friendly and attentive. Will definitely come back!
MorePoor customer service. They make you feel very uncomfortable if you’re an African American. They took over an hour to bring out the main course. When I inquired about the food they had nothing to say about the wait or when it will be out. I do not recommend this restaurant and will not return. They need to learn to treat everyone equal because all money is green.
MoreIf you want some good value for what you pay for, and an incredible ambiance - seriously the entire restaurant is absolutely beautiful, it feels like youre in Athens - and then you best come here for any seafood cravings. The catch of the day is gigantic and cooked to perfection, the risotto only needs a couple ingredients because they are all so high quality, and the ceviche is unlike anything Ive ever had. I was blown away.
MoreI have traveled all around the world, and let me tell you- this place has the best shrimp risotto I have ever had in my life. Great atmosphere, it has that old world feel. Service was good.
MoreGreat food, beautiful Spanish inspired decor, friendly and attentive staff. The Seafood Mofongo was delicious! It would help to offer more sauce on the side, or serve the dish in a bowl like plate that allows for more sauce, can you tell how much I liked the sauce? Also, they accept reservations! The wait time to get a table at the popular spots in Old San Juan can be 1h+... so go to El Asador! We left full and happy.insta: @yanoush_katoush
MoreThe food was really good! We had a great time at the wedding rehearsal dinner ❤
MoreThis place is so delicious! I ate every bite! The service was great and the atmosphere was very upscale and romantic. We wanted a nice romantic evening out and everything was perfect. The pina coladas were the smoothest I had all of our trip.
MoreGreat atmosphere, food and service. If you are in PR you should come here. Centuries ago the place was a monastery. I tried churrasco, mushroom risotto, mashed yuca and sweet potato, atun filet, french fries and fried plantains "amarillo or maduro". We ordered bottles of white wine. Jorge Rentas was the best!
MoreNice location and our waitress was extremely nice. Food was okay but not worth $100.00 total.
MoreNeed a new kitchen staff. Profit margins are probably pretty good, considering the corners cut. First the good: service friendly and professional with good attention. The appetizer shrimp risotto was on point, done right. The main courses not so much. The grouper was cooked well but the mango sauce was sickly sweet without a savory counterbalance and probably from a can. The fries were crisp and tasty. The mahi mahi was dry, overly fishy tasting. Probably not fresh and overcooked. The creole sauce was flavorless and likely from a can. Sad. The rice and beans werent offensive but also not inspired. Restaurant space is large clean and dramatic in appearance, it is really too bad that the food doesnt carry its weight. I sense that a cost cutting MBA had too much input into the food.
MoreFood is delicious. Steak was tender and juicy. Staff was courteous and attentive.
MoreAmazing food, we were very lucky to find this gem. I highly recommend the mahi mahi with the mushroom risotto and enjoy it with Mojito. You cant go wrong with this combination.
MoreI had a mofongo fried meat. Good but a little dry... could be better with a light gravy on the side. Very nice place, maybe a little too expensive. No water on the table.
MoreAmazing food, and even more amazing atmosphere. The seafood risotto was more seafood than risotto (and that is meant in the best possible way!), and the risotto itself was flawless. The umbrellas were a seemingly nice touch, until a brief, late afternoon shower. Then they became a brilliant forethought! The mofongo with meat was spot on, but the grouper with garlic sauce was the showstopper. And to cap off such a memorable dinner with a stunning creme brulee was more than I could have hoped for. All in all, an amazing way to start a Puerto Rican vacation!
MoreA beautifully maintained place. It used to be a monastery; you can feel the history when you walk in. Waiter was attentive and kind. The Ceviche and fried calamari appetizers were delicious, as well as the Mojito my friend ordered. Definitely check it out if you’re around old San Juan!
MoreOur first place in San Juan! And 100% satisfaction. Ceviche! Risotto with shrimps 😍. Out of this world. Yum and the atmosphere and service- everything was great!
MoreService is nice, food are decent. Linguine and risotto are very cheesey, great for cheese lovers. Fried calimary is a bit dry.
MoreThis place is AWESOME!!!!! A jewel on Old San Juan. My steak was done perfectly and the shrimp were simply delicious. I went on a Saturday night and it wasnt crowded. Im glad because we got right in. Our server was great with his recommendations. Definately on my lists to come back to.
MoreSimple and off to the side but a great find! Mojitos were perfect! Bartender was so nice and polite! Mushroom Risotto was delicious and the vibe over all very relaxing! Cannot wait to come back for a complete meal!!
